The development of green nanocomposites based on biopolymers and bio-based nanofillers has attracted over the recent years the attention of academic and industrial research. Indeed, these nanocomposites could replace some oil-derived polymers and thus helping to overcome environmental problems. In this regard, PLA as matrix and polysaccharide nanocrystals as fillers are the most promising components to obtain high-performance green bio-nanocomposites suitable for different applications, particularly for packaging and biomedical applications. Indeed, at present, due to its processability, mechanical and biological properties, as well as its commercial availability, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) possesses one of the highest potentials among biopolymers whereas polysaccharide nanocrystals can be considered the most promising bio-based reinforcements due to their availability, renewability, versatility, biodegradability and high aspect ratio. Aim of this review is to give an overview on the preparation routes and main properties of PLA/polysaccharide nanocomposites highlighting the main differences among the three main polysaccharide nanocrystals, i.e. cellulose, chitin, and starch.  相似文献

Lignin is a biopolymer and one of the main constituents of woody plants where it plays the role of lining agent and is comparable in this respect to cement in steel reinforced concrete. Polymer nanocomposites containing biopolymers such as cellulose, lignin, starch, proteins, etc. are the object of recent numerous studies and are known also as bio-nanocomposites. This paper deals with lignin use in various polymer nanocomposites. It presents the preparation and uses of nanolignin as a filler and lignin uses as a matrix or a matrix component in polymer nanocomposites.  相似文献

Cellulose/iron oxide hybrids were prepared by the controlled hydrolysis of FeC2O4 in the presence of vegetable and bacterial cellulose fibres as substrates. By varying the relative amount of FeC2O4 and NaOH, either hematite or magnetic iron oxides were grown at the cellulose fibres surfaces. This chemical strategy was used for the production of a number of materials, whose coloristic properties associated to their reinforcement role allowed their use as new hybrid pigments for thermoplastic starch (TPS) based products. The TPS reinforced materials were characterized by several techniques in order to evaluate: the morphology and the compatibility between the matrix and the fillers; the mechanical reinforcement effect of the cellulose/iron oxide pigments on TPS and the coloristic properties of the composites. All materials showed good dispersion and strong adhesion for the cellulose/iron oxide nanocomposites in the TPS matrix thus resulting in improved mechanical properties.  相似文献

The objective of this work is the use of cellulose fibers extracted from coir fibers as Janus nanocylinders to suppress the phase retraction and coalescence in poly(lactic) acid/polypropylene bio-blend polymers via prompting the selective localization of cellulose fibers at the interface using chemical modification. The untreated and modified cellulose fibers extracted from coir fibers using a silane molecule (tetraethoxysilane) were used as reinforcement and as Janus nanocylinder at two weight contents (2.5 wt% and 5 wt%) to manipulate the morphology of the bio-blends. Their bio-composites with PLA-PP matrix were prepared via melt compounding (at PLA/PP: 50/50). The treatment effect on component interaction and the bio-composites properties have been studied via Scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and differential calorimetry analysis. The mechanical and rheological properties of nanocomposites were similarly assessed. Young's modulus and tensile strength of PLA-PP nanocomposites reinforced by silanized cellulose fibers show a great enhancement as compared to a neat matrix. In particular, there was a gain of 18.5% in Young's modulus and 11.21% in tensile strength for silanized cellulose fiber-based bio-blend composites at 5 wt%. From the rheological point of view, it was found that the silanized cellulose fibers in PLA-PP at both fibers loading enhances the adhesion between both polymers leading to tuning their morphology from sea-island to the continuous structures with the appearance of PLA microfibrillar inside of bio-composites. This change was reflected in the relaxation of the chain mobility of the bio-blend composites.

Cellulose acetate membranes have been used in many applications; of particular interest are reverse osmosis systems, and as a neutral matrix for incorporation of different polymers (e.g., conducting polymers), inorganic ions (e.g., lanthanides) and organic (e.g., pharmaceutical) compounds. The properties of the new polymers derived from cellulose acetate or blends depend on those of cellulose acetate. This work presents an attempt to find links between thermodynamic and kinetic properties of cellulose acetate membranes in equilibrium with water. Water diffusion coefficients in cellulose acetate membranes are reported, measured with a simple water permeation technique. The comparison of these values with the percentage of water uptake and polymer thickness leads to interesting conclusions related with different polymer properties.  相似文献

Nanotechnology provides useful insights into the behavioural properties of materials from the nanoscale point of view, enabling researchers to develop new materials that were previously inconceivable. Cellulose is an ideal candidate for nanomaterial for nanotechnology because of its nanofibrillar structure, abundance, renewability, biodegradability and eco-friendly nature. Nanocrystalline cellulose materials have become the focus many studies related to these materials and their applications. This review summarises the current knowledge on the field of nanomaterials, focussing mainly on the rheological behaviour of polymer nanocomposites embedded with nanocrystalline cellulose. This review will enable better understanding of the use of nanocrystalline cellulose for the development and applications of cellulose nanocrystal-based nanocomposites.  相似文献

Conjugated polymers gain growing importance as conductive materials in industrial applications in various fields of electronic devices. Cellulose with its extraordinary supramolecular structure and material properties can help to awake the possibilities for conducting polymers in interplay of the two materials. The ability of additional derivatization, the stiff and oriented molecular structure and the inherent strength, stability and film-forming properties give cellulose a complementary role to the brittle conjugated polymers, cellulose imparting the features of a stable and robust carrier component. To go forward this way, making a composite out of cellulose and conducting polymers is a prerequisite. Different strategies to form composite materials of non-derivatized cellulose and conductive organic polymers were tested. Significant differences between various mixing strategies as well as between the conducting polymers polyaniline (PAni), polypyrrole (PPy), and polythiophen (PTh) were observed. In situ synthesis of the conducting polymers in cellulose solutions and microcellulose dispersions as well as blending of pre-synthesized conducting polymers in these cellulose systems were tested. Unexpectedly, not homogenous mixtures showed best results in respect to film formation and conductivity, but composites formed by heterogeneous mixtures of the conducting polymers within a cellulose gel. Best results were obtained with finely dispersed PAni. The results support development studies towards circuitry and photo-current systems based on cellulose carriers.  相似文献

The combination of biopolymer science and technology with surface engineering of paper-based cellulosic materials has a lot of potential in stepping forward to a sustainable future. Various biopolymers such as oxidized starch, carboxymethyl cellulose, and polylatic acid have been commercially used to engineer paper surface. The paper-based cellulosic products are widely used for printing/writing and packaging applications. However, the production of these products are currently dependent mainly upon the use of petroleum-based materials including synthetic pigment coating latexes and barrier coating materials. The major challenges associated with some biopolymers are their relatively high costs and unsatisfactory performances. Continuing efforts are being made to enable the increased and value-added use of various biopolymers in paper surface engineering. These polymers can be based on cellulose, hemicelluloses, chitosan, alginate, protein, polylactic acid, and polyhydroxyalkanoate. The biopolymer-engineered paper products can be tailored for use as substitutes for various non-renewable materials including plastics and metals as well. Future development in the area of biopolymers for paper surface engineering is likely to lead to new possibilities and breakthroughs, paving the way for a substantially sustainable and green future.  相似文献

Recently, biocomposites have emerged as materials of great interest to the scientists and industry around the globe. Among various polymers, polylactic acid (PLA) is a popular matrix material with high potential for advanced applications. Various particulate materials and nanoparticles have been used as the filler in PLA based matrix. One of the extensively studied filler is cellulose. However, cellulose fibres, due to their hydrophilic nature, are difficult to blend with a hydrophobic polymer matrix. This leads to agglomeration and creates voids, reducing the mechanical strength of the resulting composite. Moreover, the role of the various forms of pure cellulose and its particle shape factors has not been analyzed in most of the current literature. Therefore, in this work, materials of various shapes and shape factors were selected as fillers for the production of polymer composites using Polylactic acid as a matrix to fill this knowledge gap. In particular, pure cellulose fibres (three types with different elongation coefficient) and two mineral nanocomponents: precipitated calcium carbonate and montmorillonite were used. The composites were prepared by a melt blending process using two different levels of fillers: 5% and 30%. Then, the analysis of their thermomechanical and physico-chemical properties was carried out. The obtained results were presented graphically and discussed in terms of their shape and degree of filling.  相似文献

There is a resurgence of interest in composite materials incorporating cellulose as fibrous reinforcement in semicrystalline melt-processed polymers. Potential natural cellulose sources range from flax and ramie fibres down to whiskers and nanocrystals isolated from bacteria. It has long been known that the crystallization of matrix polymers such as polypropylene may be preferentially nucleated by Cellulose I surfaces, leading to a “transcrystalline” layer around the fiber. In this note, a transcrystalline layer at the edge of films cast from cellulose nanocrystal suspensions is demonstrated, and preferential nucleation of polypropylene on nanocrystals deposited on a glass surface is also observed.  相似文献

Recently, considerable interest has been focused on developing greener and biodegradable materials due to growing environmental concerns. Owing to their low cost, biodegradability, and good mechanical properties, plant fibers have substituted synthetic fibers in the preparation of composites. However, the poor interfacial adhesion due to the hydrophilic nature and high-water absorption limits the use of plant fibers as a reinforcing agent in polymer matrices. The hydrophilic nature of the plant fibers can be overcome by chemical treatments. Cellulose the most abundant natural polymer obtained from sources such as plants, wood, and bacteria has gained wider attention these days. Different methods, such as mechanical, chemical, and chemical treatments in combination with mechanical treatments, have been adopted by researchers for the extraction of cellulose from plants, bacteria, algae, etc. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) have been extracted and used for different applications such as food packaging, water purification, drug delivery, and in composites. In this review, updated information on the methods of isolation of nanocellulose, classification, characterization, and application of nanocellulose has been highlighted. The characteristics and the current status of cellulose-based fiber-reinforced polymer composites in the industry have also been discussed in detail.  相似文献

Polymer nanocomposites represent a class of materials that have assumed great importance in recent years and are the focus of extensive research. Unlike plastomer nanocomposites, the elastomer nanocomposites are in the stage of infancy in respect to their applications.

In general, in polymer composites, the matrix and the filler are bonded to each other by weak intermolecular forces and covalent bonding are rarely involved. If the filler could be dispersed in the polymer matrix at the nanometre level and is able to interact with the matrix by chemical bonding, nanocomposites with significant properties improvement are obtained. These improvements can include mechanical properties (module, strength, etc.), thermal resistance, decrease in gas permeability (barrier), flammability, etc.

This paper is a review of the property improvements of different elastomers using nanofillers like silicates, carbon black, metallic powders, cellulose crystals, mixture of nanofillers, etc, with the intention of obtaining elastomer nanocomposites.  相似文献

Nanocelluloses: a new family of nature-based materials   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Cellulose fibrils with widths in the nanometer range are nature-based materials with unique and potentially useful features. Most importantly, these novel nanocelluloses open up the strongly expanding fields of sustainable materials and nanocomposites, as well as medical and life-science devices, to the natural polymer cellulose. The nanodimensions of the structural elements result in a high surface area and hence the powerful interaction of these celluloses with surrounding species, such as water, organic and polymeric compounds, nanoparticles, and living cells. This Review assembles the current knowledge on the isolation of microfibrillated cellulose from wood and its application in nanocomposites; the preparation of nanocrystalline cellulose and its use as a reinforcing agent; and the biofabrication of bacterial nanocellulose, as well as its evaluation as a biomaterial for medical implants.  相似文献

Natural fiber is well‐known reinforcement filler in polymer‐matrix composites. Composite components like organic polymers and natural fibers are natural fire conductors as the natural fiber consists of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, and hence are as highly flammable as wood. Natural fiber reinforced composite materials are progressively being used in a variety of applications where their fire response is a hazardous consideration, for example, in the automotive (transportation) and building‐construction industries. As a result, an awareness of their performance or response during a fire and the use of conventional fire retardants are of great importance, as they are subject to thermal decomposition when exposed to intensive high heat or fire sources. In this review paper, fire flammability is the main concern for cellulosic and non‐cellulosic fiber‐reinforced polymer composites, especially epoxy composites. This paper reviews the literature on the recent developments in flammability studies concerning polymers, epoxy polymers, cellulosic‐fibers, and non‐cellulosic fiber‐reinforced epoxy bio‐composites. The prime objective of this review is to expand the reach of “fire retardants for polymer materials and composites” to the science community, including physicists, chemists, and engineers in order to broaden the range of their applications. Microfibrillated cellulose and new nanocomposite materials: a review   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:2
Due to their abundance, high strength and stiffness, low weight and biodegradability, nano-scale cellulose fiber materials (e.g., microfibrillated cellulose and bacterial cellulose) serve as promising candidates for bio-nanocomposite production. Such new high-value materials are the subject of continuing research and are commercially interesting in terms of new products from the pulp and paper industry and the agricultural sector. Cellulose nanofibers can be extracted from various plant sources and, although the mechanical separation of plant fibers into smaller elementary constituents has typically required high energy input, chemical and/or enzymatic fiber pre-treatments have been developed to overcome this problem. A challenge associated with using nanocellulose in composites is the lack of compatibility with hydrophobic polymers and various chemical modification methods have been explored in order to address this hurdle. This review summarizes progress in nanocellulose preparation with a particular focus on microfibrillated cellulose and also discusses recent developments in bio-nanocomposite fabrication based on nanocellulose.  相似文献

Microcrystalline cellulose-filled polypropylene (PP) composites and cellulose nanofiber-filled composites were prepared by melt blending. The compounded material was used to evaluate dispersion of cellulose fillers in the polypropylene matrix. Thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and mechanical testing were conducted on composites blended multiple times and the results were compared with single batch melt blended composites. The residual mass, tensile strength, and coefficient of variance values were used to evaluate dispersion of the microcrystalline cellulose fillers in the PP matrix. The potential of using TG to evaluate cellulose nanofiber-filled thermoplastic polymers was also investigated and it was found that the value and variability of residual mass after TG measurements can be a criterion for describing filler dispersion. A probabilistic approach is presented to evaluate the residual mass and tensile strength distribution, and the correlation between those two properties. Both the multiple melt blending and single batch composites manufactured with increased blending times showed improved filler dispersion in terms of variation and reliability of mechanical properties. The relationship between cellulose nanofiber loading and residual mass was in good agreement with the rule of mixtures. In this article, the authors propose to use a novel method for dispersion evaluation of natural fillers in a polymer matrix using TG residual mass analysis. This method can be used along with other techniques such as scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) for filler dispersion evaluation in thermoplastic composites.  相似文献

Nanocomposites of polyamides with cellulose whiskers are difficult to obtain by conventional processing of extrusion and injection molding because of the low thermal stability of the cellulosic nanostructures and the relatively high processing temperature of polyamides, which is higher than the temperature of thermal degradation of cellulose whiskers. Thus, in this study cellulose whiskers were coated with polyamide 6 (PA6) in order to increase their thermal stability and prevent the formation of agglomerates. This coating on cellulose whiskers allows their application to obtain nanocomposites with polyamides, whose processing temperatures are relatively high, around 250 °C. Cellulose whiskers (CWs) were obtained from cotton fibers by acid hydrolysis. The freeze-dried CWs were coated with PA6 by dispersing them in formic acid; PA6 was solubilized in this suspension. The cellulose-coated whiskers (CCWs) were characterized by X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry (TG), scanning electron microscopy (SEM-FEG) and infrared spectroscopy. SEM-FEG and TG results showed that the PA6 coating on CWs prevented high agglomeration of dried CWs and promoted an increase in their thermal stability from 180 to 280 °C, allowing the use of CCWs to obtain nanocomposites with PA6 using conventional processing routes, such as extrusion and injection molding, at appropriate processing temperatures. In this way, 1 wt% CCWs was used to prepare nanocomposites with PA6. The PA6 + 1CW nanocomposites were compared to neat PA6 without CWs. The samples were characterized by tensile tests and DSC, and the results showed that the PA6 coating on CWs was effective in raising the thermal stability of CWs, improving the dispersion of CWs in the matrix of PA6, resulting in a 45 % increase in the elastic modulus of the nanocomposite with only 1 wt% of coated cellulose whiskers in comparison to neat PA6.  相似文献
