A new gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) system was designed and evaluated which we have named 'Supersonic GC/MS'. It is based on a modification of a commercially available GC/MS system to include a supersonic molecular beam (SMB) MS interface. In this system the standard electron ionization (EI) ion source was replaced with a fly-through EI ion source mounted in the path of the SMB. A hyperthermal surface ionization (HSI) ion source combined with a 90 degrees ion mirror (for the EI-produced ions) was also added, and placed inside the quadrupole mass analyzer in place of its original EI ion source. The 'Supersonic GC/MS' system requires 18 cm added bench space plus the addition of an air-cooled 60 L/s diffusion pump and a 537 L/min rotary pump. The system is user friendly since all the gas flow rates, heated zones, sampling and data analysis are performed the same way as the original system and are computer-controlled via the original software. Similar EI sensitivity was obtained as with the original system for hexachlorobenzene and octafluoronaphthalene, while improved EI detection limits were demonstrated for methyl stearate and eicosane due to the significant enhancement of their molecular ion abundances. A GC/MS detection limit of 500 ag for pyrene was demonstrated using HSI. Good supersonic expansion cooling was achieved with large alkanes, despite the use of a rotary pump at the nozzle chamber instead of a diffusion pump. High temperature GC/MS analysis was demonstrated for large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) including ovalene and decacyclene (ten rings). Library searches with EI mass spectra are demonstrated, and it is explained why the enhancement of the molecular ion actually improves the library search in most cases. The analysis of large phthalate esters is also described, and the improvement obtained is shown to originate from their enhanced molecular and high mass fragment ions.  相似文献

Spectroscopy Laboratory, The Dow Chemical Company, Midland, Michigan, USA In December 1955 or thereabouts, the authors coupled a homemade gas chromatograph to a research time-of-flight mass spectrometer constructed by W. C. Wiley, I. H. McLaren, and D. B. Harrington. This unique gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) instrument generated mass spectra at a lo-kHz rate for display on an oscilloscope; eluted gas chromate graphic components, such as methanol, acetone, benzene, toluene, and carbon tetrachloride, could be visually identified immediately from the oscilloscope display. Many years of further research and development in many laboratories worldwide were necessary, however, to make continuous on-line GC/MS the uniquely valuable analytical tool that it is today.  相似文献

Negative-ion counting techniques for gas chromatography—electron-impact ionization quadrupole mass spectrometry (g.c.—m.s.) are described. Signal-to-noise performance is good and data acquisition is fast. Digital processing of the negative ion signals is done with an ion-counting device and data acquisition with a multi-channel analyzer. The negative-ion mass spectra from g.c.—m.s. measurements are shown for a mixture of tetrachloro-methane, 1,2,2-trichloroethane and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane.  相似文献

The incorporation of stable isotopes improves the assessment of glucose metabolism and, with some researchers using two tracers, (2)H-glucose assessed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and (13)C-glucose by gas chromatography/combustion/isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC/C/IRMS), a common derivative for both is advantageous. The most commonly used derivatives for GC/MS are inappropriate for GC/C/IRMS as additional functional groups dilute the label. We therefore considered the suitability of six derivatives for both GC/MS and GC/C/IRMS. Glucose alkylboronates were prepared by adding the appropriate alkylboronic acid (butyl- or methylboronic acid) in pyridine to desiccated glucose. The derivatisation was completed by reacting this with either (a) acetic anhydride or trifluoroacetic anhydride (acetate derivatives) or (b) bis(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide BSTFA (TMS derivatives). All six derivatives were assessed using GC/MS and (13)C GC/C/IRMS.Neither TMS derivative exhibited any signal intensity in the molecular ion, although a M-15 ion showed good agreement between experimental and theoretical data and, whilst still low in intensity, could be suitable for isotope work. Similarly, none of the acetate derivatives showed any intensity at the molecular ion although three key fragmentation series were identified. The most attractive sequence, initiated by the loss of 1,2 cyclic boronate, resulted in the main fragment ion of interest, m/z 240, corresponding to the fluorinated methylboronate derivate. Minimal carbon and hydrogen atoms are added to this derivative making it an excellent choice for stable isotope work, while proving suitable for analysis by both GC/MS and GC/C/IRMS.  相似文献

The pressure requirements for chemical ionization g.c./F.t.m.s. which restrict mass resolution and accuracy are overcome through use of a pulsed valve that provides momentary reagent gas pressures. For alternate electron impact (EI)/chemical ionization (c.i.) g.c./F.t.m.s., similar resolution for both e.i. and c.i. data is demonstrated. The efficiency of chemical ionization with the pulsed valve is similar to static high pressure c.i. measurements of several model compounds. Results from the analysis of peppermint oil and a fuel additive illustrate the potential information available from a single g.c./F.t.m.s. experiment.  相似文献

trans Isomers of naturally occurring cis-unsaturated fatty acids are produced when liquid vegetable oils or marine oils are partially hydrogenated to produce margarine, shortenings, and other hardened-fat products. Isomeric trans fatty acids are also formed in the intestinal tract of ruminants, and they appear in small amounts in dairy products and ruminant meat. Currently, satisfactory analyses for the fatty acid profiles of fats containing trans fatty acids are obtained by gas chromatography (GC) using capillary columns coated with highly polar cyanosilicone stationary phases. In capillary GC methods, the key limitation has been the incomplete separation of trans-monoenoic acid isomers from their cis isomers; however, recent reports have demonstrated that improvements in separation are attainable with the use of 100 m columns. In these columns, there is very little overlap of cis and trans isomers. More accurate trans fatty acid analyses can be obtained by coupling GC with either silver-nitrate thin-layer chromatography or silver-nitrate liquid chromatography.  相似文献

Low- and high-molecular mass thermal decomposition products of five polyquinones with different linking aromatic structures have been analyzed by pyrolysis–gas chromatography and by direct (in-source) pyrolysis–field ionization mass spectrometry. The quantity of carboxyl groups present in the polymer is obtained by the amounts of carbon dioxide found by pyrolysis–gas chromatography. Assuming a radical thermal decomposition mechanism the distribution of ketoacidic and quinonoid segments along the macromolecular ladder could be estimated from the high-molecular mass products measured by pyrolysis–field ionization mass spectrometry. A random distribution of the two different segments was found for polyquinones with biphenylene and dibenzofuran subunits, while a structure built up of blocks of two or more identical segments was obtained for polyquinones with dibenzothiophene and diphenylmethane subunits. At the same time the anomalous structural moieties in the polyquinone ladders are also clarified with the help of the identification of the unexpected pyroysis products. Oxidated and bis-dibenzothiophene and bis-diphenylmethane subunits were found. The observed temperature dependence for the appearances of the thermal degradation products indicates that condensation and elimination reactions are taking place under the described pyrolysis conditions. Condensation in the ketoacidic segments forming new quinonoid segments proved to be important in the polymer which was a 100% poly(ketoacid), but negligible in the polyquinones containing ketoacidic segments up to 60%.  相似文献

Fatty acid amides are a class of compounds with newly discovered biological activity. The ion trap mass spectrometric characteristics of silylated fatty acid amides were examined. Silylation of primary fatty acid amides is required prior to gas chromatography owing to thermal instability of the underivatized compound. The trimethylsilylated amides do not yield a molecular ion under normal electron ionization conditions (70 eV). With methane as a chemical ionization gas, the [M+H]+ ion appears. The [M+H]+ ion also appears when the helium buffer gas pressure is increased in the ion trap. There are three fragments other than the [M+H]+ peak that are predominant in the ion trap mass spectra of these compounds. Two of the fragments have been reported previously, namely the m/z 59 and the [M-71]+ fragments. The fragment of m/z 72 was identified and is the result of a rearrangement. Isotopic labeling was used to confirm fragment identity and the composition of the rearrangement products. Fragmentation patterns were affected by the amide chain length and concentration.  相似文献

The explosive triacetone triperoxide (TATP) has been analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and sub-nanogram detection limits are reported by ammonia positive ion chemical ionization (PICI), electron ionization (EI) and methane negative ion chemical ionization (NICI). Analysis by methane PICI and ammonia NICI gave detection limits in the low nanogram range. Analyses were carried out on (linear) quadrupole and ion trap instruments. Analysis of TATP by PICI using ammonia reagent gas is the preferred analytical method, producing low limits of detection as well as an abundant (greater than 60% of base peak) diagnostic adduct ion at m/z 240 corresponding to [TATP + NH4]+. Isolation of the [TATP + NH4]+ ion with subsequent collision-induced dissociation (CID) produces extremely low abundance product ions at m/z values greater than 60, and the m/z 223 ion corresponding to [TATP + H]+ was not observed. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the B88LYP/DVZP level indicate that dissociation of the complex to form NH4+ and TATP occurs at energies lower than peroxide bond dissociation, while protonation of TATP leads to cleavage of the ring structure. These results provide a method for pico-gram detection levels of TATP using commercial instrumentation commonly available in forensic laboratories. As a point of comparison, a detection limit of 15 ng was obtained by flame ionization detection.  相似文献

We present newly developed isotope abundance analysis (IAA) methods and software which are used to derive elemental formula information from experimental mass spectral data of molecular ion isotopomeric abundances. The software, using a novel method, can also be used to automatically confirm or reject NIST library search results, thereby significantly improving the confidence level in sample identifications. In the case of IAA confirmation of the NIST library results, sample identification is unambiguous, since the confirmation is achieved by two independent sets of data and analytical methods. In the case of a rejection, such as when the molecule is not included in the library's databases, the IAA software independently provides a list of elemental formulae with declining order of matching to the isotopomeric experimental data, in a similar way to accurate mass measurements with costly instruments. IAA is ideally applicable to gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) (and liquid chromatography/electron ionization mass spectrometry (LC/EI-MS)) with a supersonic molecular beam (SMB) since it requires a trustworthy and highly abundant true molecular ion that is unique to the SMB-MS systems, plus the absence of self chemical ionization and vacuum background noise, again unique features of GC/SMB-MS. The various features of the IAA methods and software are described, their performance is demonstrated with the analysis of experimental GC-SMB-MS data and the IAA concept is compared with accurate mass alternatives. The combination of IAA and GC/SMB-MS is believed to be superior to accurate mass GC/MS in view of the general availability of trustworthy molecular ions for an extended range of compounds.  相似文献

A procedure to analyze ethyl carbamate (EC) by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry was optimized and validated. Deuterated EC (d5-EC) was added to the samples as an internal standard followed by extraction with polystyrene crosslinked polystyrene cartridges using minimal volumes of ethyl acetate. The EC response was measured in selective ion monitoring (SIM) mode and found to be linear in the range between the limit of quantitation (10 micro/L) and 1000 microg/L. EC recoveries varied from 92 to 112%, with the average value of 100 +/- 8%. The procedure compared well (r2 = 0.9970) with the existing AOAC Official Method with the added benefits of minimal solvent usage and reduced matrix interferences.  相似文献

Proteinaceous organic materials used as ancient painting media were investigated by capillary gas chromatography (GC) and capillary gas chromatography — mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Medieval wall paintings made by the tempera technique were considered and their binding media were studied by the characterization of their main chemical components. The basic methodology is based on the determination of amino acids in samples of paint layers after hydrolysis and derivatization and on the comparison with reference proteinaceous materials. Multivariate chemometric techniques were used to facilitate the recognition of the protein source from chromatographic data. To characterize the binders further, a method was developed for the determination of fatty acids, present as minor components, by GC/MS. The use of fused-silica capillary columns coated with selected stationary phases allowed the separation of amino acid and fatty acid derivatives in a single analytical run.  相似文献

The photostability of guaiazulene (1,4-dimethyl-7-isopropylazulene; GA), a natural azulenic compound used in cosmetic and health-care products, as well as in pharmaceutical preparations, was investigated in solution (methanol, ethanol, acetonitrile), by different techniques: gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and high-performance liquid chromatography combined with atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry and UV detection (LC/APCI-MS and HPLC/UV). A solar simulator (xenon-arc lamp) was used as UV-A radiation source. The study involved: monitoring compound decomposition, identifying products of photodegradation (PPs), assessing the role of oxygen and evaluating the kinetics of the process. Minor PPs are volatile compounds and were characterized by GC/MS, while oligomeric polyoxygenated compounds, tentatively characterized on the basis of MS and MS/MS spectra, were found to be the main photoproducts. The photodegradation was found to be enhanced by the presence of oxygen; nevertheless, determination of the singlet oxygen quantum yield for GA gave a lower value than that for the reference standard Rose Bengal. The obtained results and the developed stability-indicating methods (GC/MS and LC/MS) are of interest for stability studies and/or quality control purposes of GA as raw material or cosmetic products.  相似文献

Several ancient Mayan vessels from the Kislak Collection of the US Library of Congress were examined for the presence of alkaloids. One of them, a codex‐style flask, bears a text that appears to read yo‐'OTOT‐ti 'u‐MAY, spelling y‐otoot 'u‐may 'the home of its/his/her tobacco'. Samples extracted from this Late Classic period (600 to 900 AD) container were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) methods. Nicotine was identified as the major component of the extracts. LC/MS analyses also yielded signals due to nicotine mono‐oxides. The identities of the compounds were determined by comparison of the chromatographic and/or mass spectral characteristics with those from standards and literature data. High‐resolution high mass accuracy tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) spectra of protonated nicotine and nicotine mono‐oxides were measured to verify and to correct previous product ion assignments. These analyses provided positive evidence for nicotine from a Mayan vessel, indicating it as a likely holder of tobacco leafs. The result of this investigation is the first physical evidence of tobacco from a Mayan container, and only the second example where the vessel content recorded in a Mayan hieroglyphic text has been confirmed directly by chromatography/mass spectrometry trace analysis.
