Let E be the total space of a locally trivial torus bundle over a surface Σg of genus g > 1. Using Seiberg–Witten theory and spectral sequences, we prove that E carries a symplectic structure if and only if the homology class of the fiber [T2] is nonzero in H2(E, ). Assume is a connected, compact 6-dimensional symplectic manifold equipped with a semi-free Hamiltonian circle action, such that the fixed point set consists of isolated points or compact orientable surfaces. We restrict attention to the case . We give a complete list of the possible manifolds, and determine their equivariant cohomology rings and equivariant Chern classes. Some of these manifolds are classified up to diffeomorphism. We also show the existence for a few cases.

The aim of this paper is to study compact 5-manifolds which admit fixed point free circle actions. The first result implies that the torsion in the second homology and the second Stiefel-Whitney class have to satisfy strong restrictions. We then show that for simply connected 5-manifolds these restrictions are necessary and sufficient.  相似文献

Let be a connected, compact 6-dimensional symplectic manifold equipped with a semi-free Hamiltonian action such that the fixed point set consists of isolated points or surfaces. Assume dim . In an earlier paper, we defined a certain invariant of such spaces which consists of fixed point data and twist type, and we divided the possible values of these invariants into six ``types'. In this paper, we construct such manifolds with these ``types'. As a consequence, we have a precise list of the values of these invariants.

Let N be a closed irreducible 3-manifold and assume N   is not a graph manifold. We improve for all but finitely many S1S1-bundles M over N   the adjunction inequality for the minimal complexity of embedded surfaces. This allows us to completely determine the minimal complexity of embedded surfaces in all but finitely many S1S1-bundles over a large class of 3-manifolds.  相似文献

We introduce an invariant for nonsingular quadratic forms that take values in a Galois Ring of characteristic 4. This notion extends the invariant in Z8 for Z4-valued quadratic forms defined by Brown [E.H. Brown, Generalizations of the Kervaire invariant, Ann. of Math. (2) 95 (2) (1972) 368–383] and studied by Wood [J.A. Wood, Witt's extension theorem for mod four valued quadratic forms, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 336 (1) (1993) 445–461]. It is defined in the associated Galois Ring of characteristic 8. Nonsingular quadratic forms are characterized by their invariant and the type of the associated bilinear form (alternating or not).  相似文献

We investigate classical and quantum Hamiltonian reductions of free geodesic systems of complete Riemannian manifolds. We describe the reduced systems under the assumption that the underlying compact symmetry group acts in a polar manner in the sense that there exist regularly embedded, closed, connected submanifolds intersecting all orbits orthogonally in the configuration space. It is shown under certain conditions that a uniform algebra on the unit sphere S in C 2 that is invariant under the action of the 2-torus must be C(S). Contrasting with this, an example is presented showing that the statement becomes false when 2 is replaced by n > 2. It is also shown that C(M) is the only uniform algebra on a smooth manifold M that is invariant under a transitive Lie group action on its maximal ideal space. The results presented answer a question raised by Ronald Douglas in connection with a conjecture of William Arveson.  相似文献

The space of Riemannian metrics ${\mathfrak{Met}}MThe space of Riemannian metrics on an oriented compact manifold M of dimension n = 4k − 2 is endowed with a canonical presymplectic structure and a moment map [cf. Ferreiro Pérez and Mu?oz Masqué, Preprint (arXiv: math.DG/0507075)]. The fiber is characterized as the space of solutions to a differential equation. In dimension 2, the symplectic reduction of is analyzed and the construction presented here is compared with that introduced in Donaldson (Fields Medallists’ Lectures, 1997) and Fujiki (Sugaku Expositions 5(2):173–191, 1992). The construction of the depth of a countable symbolic system, which was studied earlier by the author for actions of the group , is generalized to the case of an arbitrary finitely generated Abelian group action. A new property, which is called the uniformity of the depth, is studied. The depth, which takes values in the set of at most countable ordinals, is a topological invariant of countable symbolic systems. In the paper we describe the set of possible values of the depth invariant and the method of constructing dynamical systems with an arbitrary admissible depth. This paper is concerned with the algebraic aspects of the classification of pseudofree, locally linear group actions on a simply connected 4-manifold, particularly with the splitting and stability properties of the associated Hermitian intersection module and its isometry group. Our main result is the proof of stability of the equivariant intersection form for a large class of pseudofree actions. We also prove a topological rigidity theorem stating that two locally linear, pseudofree actions on a closed, oriented, simply connected 4-manifold, with the equivariant intersection forms indefinite and of rank at least 3 at each irreducible character, are topologically conjugate by an orientation preserving homeomorphism if and only if their oriented local representations at the corresponding fixed points are linearly equivalent.Partially supported by the N.S.F.  相似文献

We show that, on an oriented Riemannian 4-manifold, existence of a non-zero parallel spinor with respect to a spin structure implies that the underlying smooth manifold admits a Kähler structure. A similar but weaker condition is obtained for the 4-manifold to admit a symplectic structure. We also show that the structure in which the non-zero parallel spinor lives is equivalent to the canonical spin structure associated to the Kähler structure.

Flexible paraboloidal shells, as key components, are increasingly utilized in antennas, reflectors, optical systems, aerospace structures, etc. To explore precise shape and vibration control of the paraboloidal membrane shells, this study focuses on analysis of microscopic control actions of segmented actuator patches laminated on the surface of a free paraboloidal membrane shell. Governing equations of the membrane shell system and modal control forces of distributed actuator patches are presented first, and followed by the analysis of dominating micro-control actions based on various natural modes, actuator locations and geometrical parameters. Finally, according to the parametric analysis, simulation data reveal main factors significantly influencing active control behavior on smart free-floating paraboloidal membrane shell systems, thus providing design guidelines to achieve optimal control of paraboloidal shell systems.  相似文献

In this paper a closing lemma for nonsingular endomorphisms equivariant under free actions of finite-groups is proved. Hence a recurrent trajectory, as well as all of its symmetric conjugates, of a nonsingular endomorphism equivariant under a free action of a finite group can be closed up simultaneously by an arbitrarily small equivariant perturbation.
