We have reinvestigated a transmission line NMR probe first published by Lowe and co-workers in 1970s [Rev. Sci. Instrum. 45 (1974) 631; 48 (1977) 268] numerically and experimentally. The probe is expected to be ultra-broadband, thus might enable new types of solid-state NMR experiments. The NMR probe consists of a coil and capacitors which are connected to the coil at regular intervals. The circuit is the same as a cascaded LC low-pass filter, except there are nonzero mutual inductances between different coil sections. We evaluated the mutual inductances by Neumann's formula and calculated the electrical characteristics of the probe as a function of a carrier frequency. We found that they were almost the same as those of a cascaded LC low-pass filter, when the inductance L of a section was estimated from the inductance of the whole coil divided by the number of the sections, and if C was set to the capacitance in a section. For example, the characteristic impedance of a transmission line coil is given by Z=(L/C)(1/2). We also calculated the magnitude and the distribution of RF magnetic field inside the probe. The magnitude of RF field decreases when the carrier frequency is increased because the phase delay between neighboring sections is proportional to the carrier frequency. For cylindrical coils, the RF field is proportional to (pinu/2nu(d))(1/2)exp(-nu/nu(d)), where the decay frequency nu(d) is determined by the dimensions of the coil. The observed carrier frequency thus must be much smaller than the decay frequency. This condition restricts the size of transmission line coils. We made a cylindrical coil for a 1H NMR probe operating below 400 MHz. It had a diameter 2.3mm and a pitch 1.2mm. Five capacitors of 6pF were connected at every three turns. The RF field strength was 40 and 60 kHz at the input RF power 100 W by a calculation and by experiments, respectively. The calculations showed that the RF field inhomogeneity along the coil axis was caused by a standing wave of current, which arose from the reflections at the coil ends. The calculation showed that the homogeneity could be improved by decreasing the pitch near the both ends and making their impedance close to that at the center.  相似文献

We present an open volume, high isolation, RF system suitable for pulsed NMR and EPR spectrometers with reduced dead time. It comprises a set of three RF surface coils disposed with mutually parallel RF fields and a double-channel receiver (RX). Theoretical and experimental results obtained with a prototype operating at about 100 MHz are reported. Each surface RF coil (diameter 5.5 cm) was tuned to f0 = 100.00 ± 0.01 MHz when isolated. Because of the mutual coupling and the geometry of the RF coils, only two resonances at f1 = 97.94 MHz and f2 = 101.85 MHz were observed. We show they are associated with two different RF field spatial distributions. In continuous mode (CW) operation the isolation between the TX coil and one of the RX coils (single-channel) was about −10 dB. By setting the double-channel RF assembly in subtraction mode the isolation values at f1 or f2 could be optimised to about −75 dB. Following a TX RF pulse (5 μs duration) an exponential decay with time constant of about 600 ns was observed. The isolation with single-channel RX coil was about −11 dB and it increased to about −47 dB with the double-channel RX in subtraction mode. Similar results were obtained with the RF pulse frequency selected to f2 and also with shorter (500 ns) RF pulses. The above geometrical parameters and operating frequency of the RF assembly were selected as a model for potential applications in solid state NMR and in free radical EPR spectroscopy and imaging.  相似文献

Sample heating induced by radio frequency (RF) irradiation presents a significant challenge to solid state NMR experiments in proteins and other biological systems, causing the sample to dehydrate which may result in distorted spectra and a damaged sample. In this work we describe a large volume, low-E (19)F-(1)H solid state NMR probe, which we developed for the 2D (19)F CPMG studies of dilute membrane proteins in a static and electrically lossy environment at 600MHz field. In (19)FCPMG and related multi-pulse (19)F-(1)H experiments the sample is heated by the conservative electric fields E produced in the sample coil at both (19)F and (1)H frequencies. Instead of using a traditional sample solenoid, our low-E (19)F-(1)H probe utilizes two orthogonal loop-gap resonators in order to minimize the conservative electric fields responsible for sample heating. Absence of the wavelength effects in loop-gap resonators results in homogeneous RF fields and enables the study of large sample volumes, an important feature for the dilute protein preparations. The orthogonal resonators also provide intrinsic isolation between the (19)F and (1)H channels, which is another major challenge for the (19)F-(1)H circuits where Larmor frequencies are only 6% apart. We detail steps to reduce (19)F background signals from the probe, which included careful choice of capacitor lubricants and manufacture of custom non-fluorinated coaxial cables. Application of the probe for two-dimensional (19)F CPMG spectroscopy in oriented lipid membranes is demonstrated with Flufenamic acid (FFA), a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug.  相似文献

The design, construction, and performance of a cross-coil double-resonance probe for solid-state NMR experiments on lossy biological samples at high magnetic fields are described. The outer coil is a Modified Alderman–Grant Coil (MAGC) tuned to the 1H frequency. The inner coil consists of a multi-turn solenoid coil that produces a B1 field orthogonal to that of the outer coil. This results in a compact nested cross-coil pair with the inner solenoid coil tuned to the low frequency detection channel. This design has several advantages over multiple-tuned solenoid coil probes, since RF heating from the 1H channel is substantially reduced, it can be tuned for samples with a wide range of dielectric constants, and the simplified circuit design and high inductance inner coil provides excellent sensitivity. The utility of this probe is demonstrated on two electrically lossy samples of membrane proteins in phospholipid bilayers (bicelles) that are particularly difficult for conventional NMR probes. The 72-residue polypeptide embedding the transmembrane helices 3 and 4 of the Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) (residues 194–241) requires a high salt concentration in order to be successfully reconstituted in phospholipid bicelles. A second application is to paramagnetic relaxation enhancement applied to the membrane-bound form of Pf1 coat protein in phospholipid bicelles where the resistance to sample heating enables high duty cycle solid-state NMR experiments to be performed.  相似文献

While magnetic resonance images essentially contain a map of the both circularly polarized components of the RF transverse magnetic fields (B(1) field), the thermal heat and electromagnetic power deposition is generated by the associated electric fields. Measurement of electric field distributions/intensities across a sample yields an indirect indication of possible cause of heating within the sample and potentially enables the detection of "hot spots," which can be present within inhomogeneous radiofrequency (RF) fields, such as the case with magnetic resonance imaging at high field strength. As a result, establishing a valid technique for direct measurements of the electric field and its correlation, obtained using computational electromagnetics, is essential in assessing (1) the safety of the RF coil designs and (2) the validity of the calculations. In this work, a probe was built and used to measure the transverse electric field (E(1) field) distributions within an empty 8 T (tuned to 340 MHz) RF head coil and within a saline water phantom loaded in the same coil. The measured E(1) field distributions were favorably compared to the distributions obtained utilizing a finite difference time domain in-house package.  相似文献

A versatile, detection-only probe design is presented that can be adapted to any existing NMR or MRI probe with the purpose of making the remote detection concept generally applicable. Remote detection suggests freeing the NMR experiment from the confinement of using the same radio frequency (RF) coil and magnetic field for both information encoding and signal detection. Information is stored during the encoding step onto a fluid sensor medium whose magnetization is later measured in a different location. The choice of an RF probe and magnetic field for encoding can be made based solely on the size and characteristics of the sample and the desired information quality without considering detection sensitivity, as this aspect is dealt with by a separate detector. While early experiments required building probes that included two resonant circuits, one for encoding and one for detection, a modular approach with a detection-only probe as presented here can be used along with any existing NMR probe of choice for encoding. The design of two different detection-only probes is presented, one with a saddle coil for milliliter-sized detection volumes, and the other one with a microsolenoid coil for sub-microliter fluid quantities. As example applications, we present time-of-flight (TOF) tracing of hyperpolarized (129)Xe spins in a gas mixture through coiled tubing using the microsolenoid coil detector and TOF flow imaging through a nested glass container where the gas flow changes its direction twice between inlet and outlet using the saddle coil detector.  相似文献

Purpose

TRASE (Transmit Array Spatial Encoding) MRI uses RF transmit phase gradients instead of B0 field gradients for k-space traversal and high-resolution MR image formation. Transmit coil performance is a key determinant of TRASE image quality. The purpose of this work is to design an optimized RF transmit phase gradient array for spatial encoding in a transverse direction (x- or y- axis) for a 0.2 T vertical B0 field MRI system, using a single transmitter channel. This requires the generation of two transmit B1 RF fields with uniform amplitude and positive and negative linear phase gradients respectively over the imaging volume.

Materials and Methods

A two-element array consisting of a double Maxwell-type coil and a Helmholtz-type coil was designed using 3D field simulations. The phase gradient polarity is set by the relative phase of the RF signals driving the simultaneously energized elements.

Results

Field mapping and 1D TRASE imaging experiments confirmed that the constructed coil produced the fields and operated as designed. A substantially larger imaging volume relative to that obtainable from a non-optimized Maxwell-Helmholtz design was achieved.

Conclusion

The Maxwell (sine)–Helmholtz (cosine) approach has proven successful for a horizontal phase gradient coil. A similar approach may be useful for other phase-gradient coil designs.  相似文献

Radiation damping arises from the field induced in the receiver coil by large bulk magnetization and tends to selectively drive this magnetization back to equilibrium much faster than relaxation processes. The demand for increased sensitivity in mass-limited samples has led to the development of microcoil NMR probes that are capable of obtaining high quality NMR spectra with small sample volumes (nL-microL). Microcoil probes are optimized to increase sensitivity by increasing either the sample-to-coil ratio (filling factor) of the probe or quality factor of the detection coil. Though radiation damping effects have been studied in standard NMR probes, these effects have not been measured in the microcoil probes. Here a systematic evaluation of radiation damping effects in a microcoil NMR probe is presented and the results are compared with similar measurements in conventional large volume samples. These results show that radiation-damping effects in microcoil probe is much more pronounced than in 5 mm probes, and that it is critically important to optimize NMR experiments to minimize these effects. As microcoil probes provide better control of the bulk magnetization, with good RF and B0 inhomogeneity, in addition to negligible dipolar field effects due to nearly spherical sample volumes, these probes can be used exclusively to study the complex behavior of radiation damping.  相似文献

A complete RF coil system, as has been previously defined, is capable of generating any steady-state RF field, at the MR frequency, that is compatible with Maxwell's equations. A coil system is complete if it is capable of generating all basis vector fields in the multipole expansion of the electromagnetic fields. A complete coil system has the potential to reach the ultimate intrinsic signal-to-noise as an MRI receiver coil. It also offers maximum flexibility in tailoring the spatial RF field distribution as an excitation coil. Here, computer simulations have been performed on array coils employing composite coil elements, assuming the current loops are small and can be approximated by magnetic dipoles. We demonstrate that a coil array can be configured to approximate a truncated complete array coil and to generate the basis magnetic vector fields up to certain orders in the multipole expansion of the electromagnetic fields.  相似文献

High spatial resolution NMR imaging techniques have been developed recently to measure the spatial inhomogeneity of a polymer coating film. However, the substrates of the polymer coatings for such experiments are generally required to be non-metallic, because metals can interact with static magnetic fields B(0) and RF fields B(1) giving rise to artifacts in NMR images. In this paper we present a systematic study on the effects of metallic substrates on 1D profiles obtained by high resolution NMR imaging. The off-resonance effect is discussed in detail in terms of the excitation profile of the RF pulses. We quantitatively show how the NMR signal intensities change with frequency offset at different RF pulse lengths. The complete NMR profiles were simulated using a Finite Element Analysis method by fully considering the inhomogeneities in both B(1) and B(0). The excellent agreement between the calculated and measured NMR profiles on both metallic and non-metallic substrates indicates that the experimental NMR profiles can be reproduced very well by numerical simulations. The metallic substrates can disturb the RF field of the coil by eddy current effect and therefore change the NMR profiles. To quantitatively interpret the NMR profile of a polymer layer on a metallic substrate, the profile has to be divided by the profile of a reference on the same metallic substrate located at the same distance from the coil.  相似文献

Four different coil designs for use with MAS in triple-resonance multi-nuclear experiments at high fields are compared, using a combination of finite element analysis (FEA) software and NMR experiments, with respect to RF field strength per unit power and relative sample heating, as governed by mean E/B(1) within the sample region. A commercial FEA package, Microwave Studio 5.1 by Computer Simulation Technology (CST) is shown to obtain remarkably accurate agreement with the experiments in Q(L), L, B, E, and mode frequencies in all cases. A simplified treatment of RF heating in NMR MAS samples is derived and shown to agree with the NMR experimental results within about 10% for two representative stator designs. The coil types studied include: (1) a variable-pitch solenoid outside a ceramic coilform, (2) a conventional solenoid very closely spaced to the MAS rotor, (3) a scroll coil, and (4) a segmented saddle cross coil (XC) for (1)H with an additional solenoid over it for the two lower-frequency channels. The XC/solenoid is shown to offer substantial advantages in reduced decoupler heating, improved S/N, and improved compatibility with multinuclear tuning and high-power decoupling. This seems largely because the division of labor between two orthogonal coils allows them each, and their associated circuitry, to be separately optimized for their respective regimes.  相似文献

We show that the spin dynamics of any pulse sequence with off-resonant pulses is identical to that of a modified sequence with on-resonant pulses, including relaxation and diffusion effects. This equivalence applies to pulse sequences with arbitrary offset frequency deltaomega(0) which may exceed the RF field strength omega(1). Using this approach, we examine steady-state free precession (SSFP) in grossly inhomogeneous fields. We show explicitly that the magnitude of the magnetization for each mode at an offset frequency deltaomega(0) is equal to that for SSFP with on-resonance pulses of rescaled amplitude, with the same dependence on relaxation times and diffusion coefficient. The rescaling depends on offset frequency and RF field strength. The theoretical results have been tested experimentally and excellent agreement is found.  相似文献

The finite RF power available on carbon channel in proton–carbon correlation experiments leads to non-uniform cross peak intensity response across carbon chemical shift range. Several classes of broadband pulses are available that alleviate this problem. Adiabatic pulses provide an excellent magnetization inversion over a large bandwidth, and very recently, novel phase-modulated pulses have been proposed that perform 90° and 180° magnetization rotations with good offset tolerance. Here, we present a study how these broadband pulses (adiabatic and phase-modulated) can improve quantitative application of the heteronuclear single quantum coherence (HSQC) experiment on high magnetic field strength NMR spectrometers. Theoretical and experimental examinations of the quantitative, offset-compensated, CPMG-adjusted HSQC (Q-OCCAHSQC) experiment are presented. The proposed experiment offers a formidable improvement to the offset performance; 13C offset-dependent standard deviation of the peak intensity was below 6% in range of ±20 kHz. This covers the carbon chemical shift range of 150 ppm, which contains the protonated carbons excluding the aldehydes, for 22.3 T NMR magnets. A demonstration of the quantitative analysis of a fasting blood plasma sample obtained from a healthy volunteer is given.  相似文献

A prototype NMR probe for long RF pulse has been constructed. Its main elements are two coils mounted in the concentric position. The first bigger coil is wound around a glass dewar tube and the second smaller coil is placed inside the dewar. These two coils are thermally isolated by the dewar. A long and strong RF pulse is applied to the bigger coil. The smaller detection coil inside the dewar contains a sample and to this coil a short RF pulse is applied. The two coils are independently tuned and electrically isolated. During the operation of the strong RF pulse the smaller coil has a high resistance to ground (very low Q factor) and does not absorb energy from the bigger coil. During the operation of the short on-resonance RF pulse the bigger coil is detuned to a higher frequency, but the resonance circuit with the small coil is in the electrical resonance. The NMR probe may be used in off-resonance experiments in which long and strong RF pulses are applied to the bigger coil and thereby the problem of the sample overheating is avoided.

The amplitudes of gradient-echoes produced using static field gradients are sensitive to diffusion of tissue water during the echo evolution time. Gradient-echoes have been used to produce MR images in which image intensity is proportional to the self-diffusion coefficient of water. However, such measurements are subject to error due to the presence of background magnetic field gradients caused by variations in local magnetic susceptibility. These local gradients add to the applied gradients. The use of radiofrequency (RF) gradients to produce gradient-echoes may avoid this problem. The RF magnetic field is orthogonal to the offset field produced by local magnetic susceptibility gradients. Thus, the effect of the local gradients on RF gradient-echo amplitude is small if the RF field is strong enough to minimize resonance offset effects. The effects of susceptibility gradients can be further reduced by storing magnetization longitudinally during the echo evolution period. A water phantom was used to evaluate the effects of background gradients on the amplitudes of RF gradient-echoes. A surface coil was used to produce an RF gradient of between 1.3 and 1.6 gauss/cm. Gradient-echoes were detected with and without a 0.16 gauss/cm static magnetic field gradient applied along the same direction as the RF gradient. The background static field gradient had no significant effect on the decay of RF gradient-echo amplitude as a function of echo evolution time. In contrast, the effect of the background gradient on echoes produced using a 1.6 gauss/cm static field gradient is calculated to be significant. This analysis suggests that RF gradient-echoes can produce MR images in which signal intensity is a function of the self-diffusion coefficient of water, but is not significantly affected by background gradients.  相似文献

The RF electric field penetration and the power deposition into planar-type inductively coupled plasmas in low-pressure discharges have been studied by means of a self-consistent model which consists of Maxwell equations combined with the kinetic equation of electrons. The Maxwell equations are solved based on the expansion of the Fourier--Bessel series for determining the RF electric field. Numerical results show the influence of a non-Maxwellian electron energy distribution on the RF electric field penetration and the power deposition for different coil currents. Moreover, the two-dimensional spatial profiles of RF electric field and power density are also shown for different numbers of RF coil turns.  相似文献

The combined use of two unconventional NMR diffusometry techniques permits measurements of the self-diffusion coefficient of fluids confined in porous media in the time range from 100 microseconds to seconds. The fringe field stimulated echo technique (FFStE) exploits the strong steady gradient in the fringe field of a superconducting magnet. Using a standard 9.4 T (400 MHz) wide-bore magnet, for example, the gradient is 22 T/m at 375 MHz proton resonance and reaches 60 T/m at 200 MHz. Extremely short diffusion times can be probed on this basis. The magnetization grid rotating frame imaging technique (MAGROFI) is based on gradients of the radio frequency (RF) field. The RF gradients not necessarily need be constant since the data are acquired with spatial resolution along the RF gradient direction. MAGROFI is also well suited for unilateral NMR applications where all fields are intrinsically inhomogeneous. The RF gradients reached depend largely on the RF coil diameter and geometry. Using a conic shape, a value of at least 0.3 T/m can be reached which is suitable for long-time diffusion measurements. Both techniques do not require any special hardware and can be implemented on standard high RF power NMR spectrometers. As an application, the influence of the tortuosity increasing with the diffusion time is examined in a saturated porous silica glass.  相似文献
