We characterize theoretically and experimentally the degradation of polarization entanglement in a fiber-optic entanglement distribution system where one of the optical fibers is exposed to the effects of polarization mode dispersion (PMD). We show gradual reduction of entanglement with increasing PMD and find that the highest PMD tolerance is achieved when the bandwidth of the pump used to generate the entangled photons in a χ((3)) process is approximately half the bandwidth of the quantum channels.  相似文献

We study the dependence on fiber birefringence of the bit-error rate (BER) caused by amplifier noise in a linear optical fiber telecommunication system. We show that the probability-distribution function of the BER obtained by averaging over many realizations of birefringent disorder has an extended tail that corresponds to anomalously large values of BER. We specifically discuss the dependence of the tail on such details of pulse detection at the fiber output as setting the clock and filtering procedures.  相似文献

In this paper the so-called sudden death effect of entanglement is investigated in a quantum model. The results show that one can expect the resurrection of the original entanglement to occur in a periodic way following each sudden death event. The length of the time interval for the zero entanglement depends not only on the degree of entanglement of the initial state but also on the initial state.  相似文献

When a composite quantum state interacts with its surroundings, both quantum coherence of individual particles and quantum entanglement will decay. We have shown that under vacuum noise, i.e., during spontaneous emission, two-qubit entanglement may terminate abruptly in a finite time [T. Yu, J.H. Eberly, Phys. Rev. Lett. 93 (2004) 140404], a phenomenon termed entanglement sudden death (ESD). An open issue is the behavior of mixed-state entanglement under the influence of classical noise. In this paper we investigate entanglement sudden death as it arises from the influence of classical phase noise on two qubits that are initially entangled but have no further mutual interaction.  相似文献

We demonstrate full characterization of femtosecond pulse distortion induced by all-order polarization mode dispersion (PMD) at selected polarization states via second-harmonic generation (SHG) frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG) measurements at an average power of under 28 nW. By applying the inverse of the measured spectral phase via a programmable pulse shaper, we compress the distorted pulses from more than 3 ps to nearly bandwidth-limited durations of less than 500 fs. Our results show that SHG FROG measurements performed by using fiber-pigtailed aperiodically poled lithium niobate waveguides can serve as a robust and sensitive tool for characterization of PMD-induced spectral phase.  相似文献

Analytical expressions are presented for Manakov solitons perturbed by polarization mode dispersion (PMD). Comparison is made with computer simulations. Dispersion-managed solitons are also studied. It is concluded that at high bit rates solitons are superior to linear return-to-zero propagation with regard to PMD.  相似文献

<正>The entanglement dynamics involving the so-called entanglement sudden death of atoms in two-photon Tavis-Cummings model is investigated.Various initial conditions that may have influences on the entanglement evolution of atoms,especially on the appearance of atomic entanglement sudden death,are studied. The appearance of entanglement sudden death is sensitive to the initial conditions of the whole system, i.e.,the concrete type of atomic initial state,the photon number in the cavity field,and the dipole-dipole interaction between atoms.It is shown that the strong dipole-dipole interaction between atoms can weaken the atomic entanglement sudden death.  相似文献

Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is one of the effects which limit bit rates in optical communications systems. The statistics of PMD is complicated because it is multi-dimensional, however, many useful results have been obtained. Much work has been done, but the subject is not yet closed, as witnessed by the existence of this conference. In this talk I will review the way some statistical equations are treated. I will briefly discuss the methods of Ito and Lax, and their application to the PMD problem.  相似文献

We describe how to calculate the Jones matrix transfer function of a fiber if its principal states of polarization and its differential group delay as functions of frequency are known. Using two counterexamples related to second-order polarization mode dispersion (PMD), we also show that a previous method used for the same purpose induces overestimation of second-order PMD effects by a factor of 2. Our new method is used to solve the problem for both counterexamples.  相似文献

We derive an analytical expression for the expected root-mean-square (rms) pulse broadening with considering the combined effects of all-order polarization mode dispersion (PMD), group velocity dispersion (GVD) and frequency chirp. It is shown that two commonly used first-order PMD compensators lose their efficiency quickly with chirp parameter increasing if GVD is ignored. When GVD is added, prechirp technique is helpful for the enhancement of PMD tolerance for both uncompensated case and first-order compensators when GVD and PMD coefficient satisfy some special relationship.  相似文献

We investigate the entanglement dynamics of a system composed of two non-interacting qubits,A and B.A third qubit,C,only has the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya(DM)spin-orbit interaction with qubit B.We find that the DM interaction can induce the entanglement sudden death(ESD)of the system qubits A and B,andproperly mixing the initial state of the system and adjusting the state of qubit C are two effective methods of controlling ESD.  相似文献

The effect of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) on Manakov solitons and dispersion managed solitons is treated analytically and by numerical simulation. In the analytic approach the internal motion of the Manakov soliton is represented as a damped harmonic oscillator. The PMD functions as a white noise source driving the oscillations. It is shown that the solitons can withstand PMD up to a certain instability threshold for which an analytic expression is obtained. This threshold is also evaluated for dispersion managed solitons. Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in fibre seriously limits the high-capacity optical fibre communication system. The measurement of PMD was realized by three methods — wavelength scanning method, modified OTDR method and modified York S-38 dispersion meter method. Different types of fibres have been measured using the above three methods and the results have been found to be consistent. Finally, we also found that the measured results of longer non-polarization-maintaining fibre satisfied the Maxwellian probability density function and the results of polarization maintaining fibre were derived. We investigate the entanglement dynamics of two initially entangled qubits interacting independently with two uncorrelated reservoirs beyond the Markovian approximation. Quite different from the Markovian reservoirs [C.E. López, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 101 (2008) 080503], we find that entanglement sudden birth (ESB) of the two reservoirs occurs without certain symmetry with respect to the entanglement sudden death (ESD) of the two qubits. A phenomenological interpretation of entanglement revival is also given.  相似文献

We study the entanglement dynamics of two cavities interacting with independent reservoirs. Expectedly, as the cavity entanglement is depleted, it is transferred to the reservoir degrees of freedom. We find also that when the cavity entanglement suddenly disappears, the reservoir entanglement suddenly and necessarily appears. Surprisingly, we show that this entanglement sudden birth can manifest before, simultaneously, or even after entanglement sudden death. Finally, we present an explanatory study of other entanglement partitions and of higher dimensional systems.  相似文献

We characterize the joint two-time statistics of the polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) vector. Good agreement with experimental PMD measurements taken on an installed system is achieved. The derivation of the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the Manakov-PMD equation is reviewed. It is shown that the usual scalar nonlinear Schrödinger equation can be derived from the Manakov-PMD equation when polarization mode dispersion is negligible and the signal is initially in a single polarization state as a function of time. Applications of the Manakov-PMD equation to studies of the interaction of the Kerr nonlinearity with polarization mode dispersion are then discussed.  相似文献

通过对微分群时延差(DGD)统计特性和偏振模色散(PMD)矢量自相关函数的数值模拟,分析比较了目前常用的三种PMD模拟器的性能. 结果表明:在DGD分布方面,由DGD发生器构成的模拟器,一个DGD发生器就可与实际光纤PMD的统计特性相符合,而由保偏光纤和可旋转的连接器构成的模拟器则至少需要15段. 在自相关函数方面,基于保偏光纤的模拟器取决于各段光纤的延时量,而基于DGD发生器的模拟器在中心频带外的自相关值很平稳,可视为常数. 关键词: 光纤通信 偏振模色散 偏振模色散模拟器 自相关函数  相似文献
