We report the first measurement of the parity-violating single-spin asymmetries for midrapidity decay positrons and electrons from W+ and W- boson production in longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s] = 500 GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The measured asymmetries, A(L)(W+) = -0.27 ± 0.10(stat.) ± 0.02(syst.) ± 0.03(norm.) and A(L)(W-) = 0.14 ± 0.19(stat.) ± 0.02(syst.) ± 0.01(norm.), are consistent with theory predictions, which are large and of opposite sign. These predictions are based on polarized quark and antiquark distribution functions constrained by polarized deep-inelastic scattering measurements.  相似文献

The A N DY project at RHIC was proposed to measure the analyzing power for Drell-Yan production. Test runs took place during polarized proton operations of RHIC in 2011 and 2012 with a model of the A N DY apparatus in place. In total, an integrated luminosity of 9 pb?1 with beam polarization of 50% was sampled. The primary detector components were a hadron calorimeter (HCal) that spanned the pseudorapidity interval 2.4 < η < 4.0 and a small electromagnetic calorimeter (ECal). Basic goals for A N DY test running were to establish the impact of a third interaction region on RHIC performance and to demonstrate HCal calibration. Energy scale of HCal was established using neutral pion reconstruction and checked with hadronic response. In addition, data with a trigger based on HCal energy sum were taken to study jet events. First measurements of analyzing power in the forward jet production are reported.  相似文献

The production of W± bosons in longitudinally polarized proton + proton collisions at RHIC is a unique way to study the flavor-dependent spin structure of the proton, since at leading order it couples directly and exclusively to specific quark flavor pairings: $u + \bar d \to W^ +$ and $\bar u + d \to W^ -$ . Measurement of the longitudinal single-spin asymmetry of the electron decay daughters in W production is sensitive to the polarizations of the quarks involved. Results from the first proton-proton collisions at √r = 500 GeV in 2009 are presented, along with a discussion of the forward-rapidity tracking upgrade.  相似文献

We measure the cross section and the difference in rapidities between photons and charged leptons for inclusive W(→lν) + γ production in eγ and μγ final states. Using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.2 fb(-1) collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, the measured cross section times branching fraction for the process pp → Wγ + X → lνγ + X and the distribution of the charge-signed photon-lepton rapidity difference are found to be in agreement with the standard model. These results provide the most stringent limits on anomalous WWγ couplings for data from hadron colliders: -0.4<Δκ(γ)<0.4 and -0.08<λ(γ)<0.07 at the 95% C.L.  相似文献

Measurements of the total and differential cross sections dσ/dp(T)(B) and dσ/dy(B) for B(+) mesons produced in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=7 TeV are presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.8 pb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment operating at the LHC. The exclusive decay B(+)→J/ψK(+), with J/ψ→μ(+)μ(-), is used to detect B(+) mesons and to measure the production cross section as a function of p(T)(B) and y(B). The total cross section for p(T)(B)>5 GeV and |y(B)|<2.4 is measured to be 28.1±2.4±2.0±3.1 μb, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the last is from the luminosity measurement.  相似文献

This review summarises the main results on the production of single vector bosons in the Standard Model, both inclusively and in association with light- and heavy-flavour jets, at the Large Hadron Collider in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of \(7\,{\mathrm {\ TeV}}\) . The general purpose detectors at this collider, ATLAS and CMS, each recorded an integrated luminosity of \({\approx } 40\,\mathrm{pb^{-1}}\) and \(5\,\mathrm{fb^{-1}}\) in the years 2010 and 2011, respectively. The corresponding data offer the unique possibility to precisely study the properties of the production of heavy vector bosons in a new energy regime. The accurate understanding of the Standard Model is not only crucial for searches of unknown particles and phenomena but also to test predictions of perturbative Quantum-Chromodynamics calculations and for precision measurements of observables in the electroweak sector. Results from a variety of measurements in which single \(W\)  or \(Z\)  bosons are identified are reviewed. Special emphasis in this review is given to interpretations of the experimental results in the context of state-of-the-art predictions.  相似文献

The contribution of B meson decays to nonphotonic electrons, which are mainly produced by the semileptonic decays of heavy-flavor mesons, in p + p collisions at √s=200 GeV has been measured using azimuthal correlations between nonphotonic electrons and hadrons. The extracted B decay contribution is approximately 50% at a transverse momentum of pT≥5 GeV/c. These measurements constrain the nuclear modification factor for electrons from B and D meson decays. The result indicates that B meson production in heavy ion collisions is also suppressed at high pT.  相似文献

The longitudinal spin transfer D LL of Λ and $\bar \Lambda$ hyperons is expected to be sensitive to the helicity distribution function of strange (anti-)quarks, and to the polarized fragmentation functions. We report new results on D LL , extracted from √s = 200 GeV polarized pp collisions recorded at the STAR detector during the 2009 RHIC run. These new results cover mid-rapidity |η| < 1.2, with extended p T up to 6 GeV/c.  相似文献

Fermilab experiment E735 located at the CO intersection region of the $\sqrt s = 1.8$ TeV $p\bar p$ collider analysed over 900 Φ→K + K ? events. Measured were the transverse momentum spectrum, the correlation between the average transverse momentum <pt> and the charged particle multiphcityN c , as well as the probability of Φ production per charged track,N Φ /N c , versusN c . We have also made an estinate of the total inclusive cross section for Φ mesons, $\sigma (p\bar p \to \phi X) = 7.3 \pm 2.2 mb$ .  相似文献

We report a study of the invariant mass distribution of jet pairs produced in association with a W boson using data collected with the CDF detector which correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.3 fb(-1). The observed distribution has an excess in the 120-160 GeV/c(2) mass range which is not described by current theoretical predictions within the statistical and systematic uncertainties. In this Letter, we report studies of the properties of this excess.  相似文献

We present an analysis of minimum bias events from proton-proton collisions at \(\sqrt s = 7GeV\) in the CERN ISR. We remove the effects of both the leading protons and compare theB=0 mesonic residue of the events to the hadronic events of similar energy produced ine + e ? collisions. This comparison is presented in terms of the standard jet-type analyses involving quantities such as sphericity and aplanarity. We find significant differences between these data and the data frome + e ? annihilations. The data of this experiment are consistent with the predictions of a longitudinal phase space model.  相似文献

This Letter presents a measurement of the W+ W- production cross section in sqrt(s) = 7 TeV pp collisions by the ATLAS experiment, using 34 pb(-1) of integrated luminosity produced by the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Selecting events with two isolated leptons, each either an electron or a muon, 8 candidate events are observed with an expected background of 1.7 ± 0.6 events. The measured cross section is 41(-16)(+20)(stat) ± 5(syst)±1(lumi) pb, which is consistent with the standard model prediction of 44 ± 3 pb calculated at next-to-leading order in QCD.  相似文献

Inclusive π0 and η production at large transverse momentum were studied in both p̄p and pp interactions at √s = 24.3 GeV. The experiment was performed using an internal molecular hydrogen gas jet target in the CERN SPS collider. No significant differences between production in p̄p and pp were observed in the transverse momentum range 2.5 < PT < 5.1 GeV/c.  相似文献

The angular distributions of muons from Υ(1S,2S,3S) → μ+ μ- decays are measured using data from pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.96 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.7 fb(-1) and collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. This analysis is the first to report the full angular distributions as functions of transverse momentum p(T) for Υ mesons in both the Collins-Soper and s-channel helicity frames. This is also the first measurement of the spin alignment of Υ(3S) mesons. Within the kinematic range of Υ rapidity |y|<0.6 and p(T) up to 40 GeV/c, the angular distributions are found to be nearly isotropic.  相似文献

We search for the standard model Higgs boson produced with a Z boson in 4.1 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron. In events consistent with the decay of the Higgs boson to a bottom-quark pair and the Z boson to electrons or muons, we set 95% credibility level upper limits on the ZH production cross section multiplied by the H → bb branching ratio. Improved analysis methods enhance signal sensitivity by 20% relative to previous searches. At a Higgs boson mass of 115 GeV/c2 we set a limit of 5.9 times the standard model cross section.  相似文献

The cross section for the production of Z boson pairs is measured using the data collected by the L3 detector at LEP in 1999 in e+e collisions at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 192 GeV up to 202 GeV. Events in all the visible final states are selected, measuring the cross section of this process. The special case of final states containing b quarks is also investigated. All results are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions.  相似文献

We report the transverse momentum (p T ) distributions for identified charged pions, protons and anti-protons using events triggered by high deposit energy in the Barrel Electro-Magnetic Calorimeter (BEMC) from p+p collisions at  GeV. The spectra are measured around mid-rapidity (|y|<0.5) over the range of 3<p T <15 GeV/c with particle identification (PID) by the relativistic ionization energy loss (rdE/dx) in the Time Projection Chamber (TPC) of the Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR). The charged pion, proton and anti-proton spectra at high p T are compared with published results from minimum bias triggered events and the Next-Leading-Order perturbative quantum chromodynamic (NLO pQCD) calculations (DSS, KKP and AKK 2008). In addition, we present the particle ratios of π /π +, , p/π + and in p+p collisions.  相似文献
