Phase states of an isotropic non-Heisenberg magnet with a magnetic ion spin of 3/2 on a triangular lattice are studied. It is shown that both dipole (ferro- and antiferromagnetic) and tensor (nematic and antinematic) phases can be implemented in the system. A phase diagram of the model under is constructed.  相似文献

It is shown that zero point quantum fluctuations completely lift the accidental continuous degeneracy that is found in mean field analysis of quantum spin nematic phases of hyperfine spin-2 cold atoms. The result is two distinct ground states which have higher symmetries: a uniaxial spin nematic and a biaxial spin nematic with dihedral symmetry Dih4. There is a novel first-order quantum phase transition between the two phases as atomic scattering lengths are varied. We find that the ground state of 87Rb atoms should be a uniaxial spin nematic. We note that the energy barrier between the phases could be observable in dynamical experiments.  相似文献

Motivated by recent experiments on material Ba3NiSb2O9, we propose two novel spin liquid phases (A and B) for spin-1 systems on a triangular lattice. At the mean field level, both spin liquid phases have gapless fermionic spinon excitations with quadratic band touching; thus, in both phases the spin susceptibility and γ=C(v)/T saturate to a constant at zero temperature, which are consistent with the experimental results on Ba3NiSb2O9. On the lattice scale, these spin liquid phases have Sp(4)~SO(5) gauge fluctuation, while in the long wavelength limit this Sp(4) gauge symmetry is broken down to U(1)×Z(2) in the type A spin liquid phase, and broken down to Z(4) in the type B phase. We also demonstrate that the A phase is the parent state of the ferroquadrupole state, nematic state, and the noncollinear spin density wave state.  相似文献

We show that Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions can substantially modify the phase diagram of spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladders in a magnetic field provided they compete with exchange. For nonfrustrated ladders, they induce a local magnetization along the DM vector that turns the gapless intermediate phase into an Ising phase with broken translational symmetry, while for frustrated ladders, they extend the Ising order of the half-integer plateau to the surrounding gapless phases of the purely Heisenberg case. Implications for experimental ladder and dimer systems are discussed.  相似文献

An effective spin-orbit coupling can be generated in a cold atom system by engineering atom-light interactions. In this Letter we study spin-1/2 and spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, and find that the condensate wave function will develop nontrivial structures. From numerical simulation we have identified two different phases. In one phase the ground state is a single plane wave, and often we find the system splits into domains and an array of vortices plays the role of a domain wall. In this phase, time-reversal symmetry is broken. In the other phase the condensate wave function is a standing wave, and it forms a spin stripe. The transition between them is driven by interactions between bosons. We also provide an analytical understanding of these results and determine the transition point between the two phases.  相似文献

The magnetic state of a system of particles with a “large” spin of 3/2 in the presence of isotropic exchange interaction in the system has been studied on the basis of a derived spin Hamiltonian. It has been shown that, at a positive contribution of the exchange interaction, an unstable nematic state appears and transforms to a stable ferromagnetic state (with an average spin of 3/2). The excitation spectrum in the ferromagnetic state is a triply degenerate Goldstone-type gapless magnon mode. At a negative sign of the exchange contribution, an antinematic state is stable with respect to a transition to a ferromagnetic state, which is forbidden. In this case, the antinematic always occurs in the state of a phase transition to an unstable antiferromagnetic state, the excitation spectrum of which is characterized by a single nondegenerate Goldstone mode.  相似文献

We present a 2D NMR investigation of the gapped spin-1/2 compound Cu2(C5H10N2D2)2Cl4. Our measurements reveal the presence of a magnetic field-induced transverse staggered magnetization (TSM) which persists well below and above the field-induced 3D long-range magnetically ordered (FIMO) phase. The symmetry of this TSM is different from that of the TSM induced by the order parameter of the FIMO phase. Its origin, field dependence, and symmetry can be explained by an intradimer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, as shown by DMRG calculations on a spin-1/2 ladder. This leads us to predict that the transition into the FIMO phase is not in the BEC universality class.  相似文献

Using bosonization approach, we derive an effective low-energy theory for XXZ-symmetric spin-1/2 zigzag ladders and discuss its phase diagram by a variational approach. A spin nematic phase emerges in a wide part of the phase diagram, either critical or massive. Possible crossovers between the spontaneously dimerized and spin nematic phases are discussed, and the topological excitations in all phases identified.Received: 14 August 2004, Published online: 29 June 2004PACS: 75.10.Pq Spin chain models - 75.40.-s Critical-point effects, specific heats, short-range order - 75.30.Gw Magnetic anisotropy - 71.10.Pm Fermions in reduced dimensions (anyons, composite fermions, Luttinger liquid, etc.)  相似文献

We present the first results on the low-frequency dynamical and transport properties of random antiferromagnetic spin chains at low temperature (T). We obtain the momentum and frequency dependent dynamic structure factor in the random singlet (RS) phases of both spin-1/2 and spin-1 chains, as well as in the random dimer phase of spin-1/2 chains. We also show that the RS phases are unusual "spin-metals" with divergent low-frequency conductivity at T = 0, and follow the spin conductivity through "metal-insulator" transitions tuned by the strength of dimerization or Ising anisotropy in the spin-1/2 case and by the strength of disorder in the spin-1 case.  相似文献

Novel competing orders are found in spin-3/2 cold atomic systems in one-dimensional optical traps and lattices. In particular, the quartetting phase, a four-fermion counterpart of Cooper pairing, exists in a large portion of the phase diagram. The transition between the quartetting and singlet Cooper pairing phases is controlled by an Ising symmetry breaking in one of the spin channels. The singlet Cooper pairing phase also survives in the purely repulsive interaction regime. In addition, various charge and bond ordered phases are identified at commensurate fillings in lattice systems.  相似文献

Using a functional renormalization group approach we study the zero temperature phase diagram of two-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures of ultracold atoms in optical lattices, in the limit when the velocity of bosonic condensate fluctuations is much larger than the Fermi velocity. For spin-1/2 fermions we obtain a phase diagram, which shows a competition of pairing phases of various orbital symmetry (s, p, and d) and antiferromagnetic order. We determine the value of the gaps of various phases close to half filling, and identify subdominant orders as well as short-range fluctuations from the renormalization group flow. For spinless fermions we find that p-wave pairing dominates the phase diagram.  相似文献

We discuss the symmetry properties and the macroscopic behavior of a nematic liquid crystal phase with D2d symmetry. Such a phase is a prime candidate for nematic phases made from banana-shaped molecules where the usual quadrupolar order coexists with octupolar (tetrahedratic) order. The resulting nematic phase is nonpolar. While this phase could resemble the classic D ∞h nematic in the polarizing microscope, it has many static as well as reversible and irreversible properties unknown to nonpolar nematics without octupolar order. In particular, there is a linear gradient term in the free energy that selects parity leading to ambidextrously helical ground states when the molecules are achiral. In addition, there are static and irreversible coupling terms of a type only met otherwise in macroscopically chiral liquid crystals, e.g. the ambidextrous analogues of Lehmann-type effects known from cholesteric liquid crystals. We also discuss the role of hydrodynamic rotations about the nematic director. For example, we show how strong external fields could alter the D2d symmetry, and describe the non-hydrodynamic aspects of the dynamics, if the two order structures, the nematic and the tetrahedratic one, rotate relative to each other. Finally, we discuss certain nonlinear aspects of the dynamics related to the non-commutativity of three-dimensional finite rotations as well as other structural nonlinear hydrodynamic effects.  相似文献

Smectic-C elastomers can be prepared by cross-linking, e.g., liquid crystal polymers, in the smectic-A phase followed by a cooling through the smectic-A to smectic-C phase transition. This transition from D(infinityh) to C(2h) symmetry spontaneously breaks rotational symmetry in the smectic plane as does the transition from a smectic-A to a biaxial smectic phase with D(2h) symmetry. We study these transitions and the emergent elasticity of the smectic-C and biaxial phases in three related models and show that these phases exhibit soft elasticity analogous to that of nematic elastomers.  相似文献

We study superfluid and Mott insulator phases of cold spin-1 Bose atoms with antiferromagnetic interactions in an optical lattice, including a usual polar condensate phase, a condensate of singlet pairs, a crystal spin nematic phase, and a spin singlet crystal phase. We suggest a possibility of exotic fractionalized phases of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates and discuss them in the language of Z2 lattice gauge theory.  相似文献

It is well known that spin nematic phases can appear in either frustrated magnets or in those described by Hamiltonians with large exotic non-Heisenberg terms like biquadratic exchange. We show in the present study that non-frustrated spin-1 1D, 2D, and 3D antiferromagnets with single-ion easy-axis anisotropy can show nematic phases in strong magnetic field. For 1D case we support our analytical results by numerical ones.  相似文献

Motivated by the recent discovery of broken fourfold symmetry in the hidden order phase of URu2Si2 [R. Okazaki et al., Science 331, 439 (2011)], we examine a scenario of a spin nematic state as a possible candidate of the hidden order phase. We demonstrate that the scenario naturally explains most of experimental observations, and furthermore, reproduces successfully the temperature dependence of the spin anisotropy detected by the above-mentioned experiment in a semiquantitative way. This result provides strong evidence for the realization of the spin nematic order.  相似文献

The ground state spin-wave excitations and thermodynamic properties of two types of ferrimagnetic chains are investigated: the alternating spin-1/2 spin-5/2 chain and a similar chain with a spin-1/2 pendant attached to the spin-5/2 site. Results for magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and specific heat are obtained through the finite-temperature Lanczos method with the aim of describing the available experimental data, as well as comparison with theoretical results from the semiclassical approximation and the low-temperature susceptibility expansion derived from Takahashi's modified spin-wave theory. In particular, we study in detail the temperature versus magnetic field phase diagram of the spin-1/2 spin-5/2 chain, in which several low-temperature quantum phases are identified: the Luttinger liquid phase, the ferrimagnetic plateau and the fully polarized phase, and the respective quantum critical points and crossover lines.  相似文献

We introduce an exactly solvable SU(2)-invariant spin-1/2 model with exotic spin excitations. With time reversal symmetry (TRS), the ground state is a spin liquid with gapless or gapped spin-1 but fermionic excitations. When TRS is broken, the resulting spin liquid exhibits deconfined vortex excitations which carry spin-1/2 and obey non-Abelian statistics. We show that this SU(2) invariant non-Abelian spin liquid exhibits the spin quantum Hall effect with quantized spin Hall conductivity σ(xy)(s)=?/2π, and that the spin response is effectively described by the SO(3) level-1 Chern-Simons theory at low energy. We further propose that a SU(2) level-2 Chern-Simons theory is the effective field theory describing the topological structure of the non-Abelian SU(2) invariant spin liquid.  相似文献

We examine the dynamic phase transitions and the dynamic compensation temperatures, within a mean-field approach, in the mixed spin-3/2 and spin-5/2 Ising system with a crystal-field interaction under a time-varying magnetic field on a hexagonal lattice by using Glauber-type stochastic dynamics. The model system consists of two interpenetrating sublattices with σ=3/2 and S=5/2. The Hamiltonian model includes intersublattice, intrasublattice, and crystal-field interactions. The intersublattice interaction is considered antiferromagnetic and to be a simple but interesting model of a ferrimagnetic system. We employ the Glauber transition rates to construct the mean-field dynamic equations, and we solve these equations in order to find the phases in the system. We also investigate the thermal behavior of the dynamic sublattice magnetizations and the dynamic total magnetization to obtain the dynamic phase transition points and compensation temperatures as well as to characterize the nature (continuous and discontinuous) of transitions. We also calculate the dynamic phase diagrams including the compensation temperatures in five different planes. According to the values of Hamiltonian parameters, five different fundamental phases, three different mixed phases, and six different types of compensation behaviors in the Néel classification nomenclature exist in the system.  相似文献
