Excitation modes in the range 2/5>or=nu>or=1/3 of the fractional quantum Hall regime are observed by resonant inelastic light scattering. Spectra of spin-reversed excitations suggest a structure of lowest spin-split Landau levels of composite fermions that is similar to that of electrons. Spin-flip energies determined from spectra reveal significant composite fermion interactions. The filling factor dependence of mode energies displays an abrupt change in the middle of the range when there is partial population of a composite fermion level.  相似文献

In the framework of a recently developed model of interacting composite fermions, we calculate the energy of different solid and Laughlin-type liquid phases of spin-polarized composite fermions. The liquid phases have a lower energy than the competing solids around the electronic filling factors nu = 4/11,6/17, and 4/19 and may thus be responsible for the fractional quantum Hall effect at nu = 4/11. The alternation between solid and liquid phases when varying the magnetic field may lead to reentrance phenomena in analogy with the observed reentrant integral quantum Hall effect.  相似文献

Most states of the fractional quantum Hall effect may be interpreted in terms of an integral quantum Hall effect of weakly-interacting quasiparticles (composite fermions). The recently discovered state does not belong to these states because its formation is due to the residual interactions between composite fermions, which become relevant when the composite-fermion levels are only partially filled. We have derived a model of interacting composite fermions, which reveals the self-similarity of the fractional quantum Hall effect and which allows for a systematic study of higher generations of composite fermions. Here, we derive the form of the interaction potential between these hierarchical composite fermions and provide some stability criteria for such states.  相似文献

Most of the fractions observed to date belong to the sequences nu=n/(2pn+/-1) and nu=1-n/(2pn+/-1), n and p integers, understood as the familiar integral quantum Hall effect of composite fermions. These sequences fail to accommodate, however, many fractions such as nu=4/11 and 5/13, discovered recently in ultrahigh mobility samples at very low temperatures. We show that these "next generation" fractional quantum Hall states are accurately described as the fractional quantum Hall effect of composite fermions.  相似文献

A theory is developed for the paired even-denominator fractional quantum Hall states in the lowest Landau level. We show that electrons bind to quantized vortices to form composite fermions, interacting through an exact instantaneous interaction that favors chiral p-wave pairing. There are two canonically dual pairing gap functions related by the bosonic Laughlin wave function (Jastrow factor) due to the correlation holes. We find that the ground state is the Moore-Read Pfaffian in the long-wavelength limit for weak Coulomb interactions, a new Pfaffian with an oscillatory pairing function for intermediate interactions, and a Read-Rezayi composite Fermi liquid beyond a critical interaction strength. Our findings are consistent with recent experimental observations of the 1/2 and 1/4 fractional quantum Hall effects in asymmetric wide quantum wells.  相似文献

We have experimentally studied the fractional quantum Hall effect in SiGe/Si/SiGe quantum wells in relatively weak magnetic fields, where the Coulomb interaction between electrons exceeds the cyclotron splitting by a factor of a few XX. Minima of the longitudinal resistance have been observed corresponding to the quantum Hall effect of composite fermions with quantum numbers p = 1, 2, 3, and 4. Minima with p = 3 disappear in magnetic fields below 7 T, which may be a consequence of the intersection or even merging of the quantum levels of the composite fermions with different orientations of the pseudo-spin, i.e., those belonging to different valleys. We have also observed minima of the longitudinal resistance at filling factors ν = 4/5 and 4/11, which may be due to the formation of the second generation of the composite fermions.  相似文献

The model of fermions in a magnetic field interacting via a purely three-body repulsive interaction has attracted interest because it produces, in the limit of short range interaction, the Pfaffian state with non-Abelian excitations. We show that this is part of a rich phase diagram containing a host of fractional quantum Hall states, a composite fermion Fermi sea, and a pairing transition. This is entirely unexpected, because the appearance of composite fermions and fractional quantum Hall effect is ordinarily thought to be a result of strong two-body repulsion. Recent breakthroughs in ultracold atoms have facilitated the realization of such a system, where this physics can be tested.  相似文献

Resonant inelastic light scattering experiments access the low lying excitations of electron liquids in the fractional quantum Hall regime in the range 2/5≥ν≥1/3. Modes associated with changes in the charge and spin degrees of freedom are measured. Spectra of spin reversed excitations at filling factor ν?1/3 and at ν?2/5 identify a structure of lowest spin-split Landau levels of composite fermions (CFs) that is similar to that of electrons. Observations of spin wave excitations enable determinations of energies required to reverse spin. The spin reversal energies obtained from the spectra illustrate the significant residual interactions of composite fermions. At ν=1/3 energies of spin reversal modes are larger but relatively close to spin conserving excitations that are linked to activated transport. Predictions of composite fermion theory are in good quantitative agreement with experimental results.  相似文献

The experimentally observed filling factors of the fractional quantum Hall effect can be described in terms of the composite fermion wave function of the Jastrow-Slater form [0pt] fully projected into the lowest Landau level. The Slater determinant of the above composite fermion wave function represents the filled Landau levels of composite fermions evaluated at the corresponding reduced magnetic field. For a system of fermions studied in the thermodynamic limit, we prove that in the even-denominator-filled state limit (when the number of filled Landau levels of composite fermions becomes infinite), the above composite fermion wave function exactly transforms into the Rezayi-Read Fermi-sea-like wave function [0pt] constructed by attaching 2m flux quanta to the Slater determinant of two-dimensional free fermions at the density corresponding to that filling. We study the composite fermion wave function and its evolution into the Fermi-sea-like wave function for a range of filling factors very close to the even-denominator-filled state. The sequence of prominent fractional quantum Hall states up to ν=5/11 around ν=1/2 in a high-mobility two-dimensional electron system confined at oxide heterointerface (ZnO) is analyzed in terms of the composite fermion model. The temperature dependence of R(xx) oscillations around ν=1/2 yields an estimation of the composite fermion effective mass, which increases linearly with the magnetic field. This mass is of similar value to an enhanced electron effective mass, which in itself arises from strong electron interaction. The energy gaps of fractional states and the temperature dependence of R(xx) at ν=1/2 point to large residual interactions between composite fermions.  相似文献

We study theoretically resonant tunneling of composite fermions through their quasibound states around a fractional quantum Hall island, and find a rich set of possible transitions of the island state as a function of the magnetic field or the backgate voltage. These have possible relevance to a recent experimental study, and reveal many subtleties involved in deducing fractional braiding statistics.  相似文献

It is well known that the nu = 2/5 state is unpolarized at zero Zeeman energy, while it is fully polarized at large Zeeman energies. A novel state with a charge/spin density wave order for composite fermions is proposed to exist at intermediate values of the Zeeman coupling for nu = 2/5. This state has half the maximum possible polarization, and can be extended to other incompressible fractions. A Hartree-Fock calculation based on the new approach for all fractional quantum Hall states developed by R. Shankar and the author is used to demonstrate the stability of this state to single-particle excitations and to compute gaps. A very recent experiment shows direct evidence for this state.  相似文献

It is demonstrated that Jain’s rule for determining fractions in the quantum Hall effect can be obtained without recourse to the phenomenological concept of composite fermions. The possibility of existence is considered for topologically nontrivial many-electron wave functions, whose group classification gives an indication of special values of electron density in the ground states separated by a gap from excited energies.  相似文献

We consider a class of interaction terms that describes correlated tunneling of composite fermions between effective Landau levels. Despite being generic and of similar strength to that of the usual density-density couplings, these terms are not included in the accepted theory of the edges of fractional quantum Hall systems. Here we show that they may lead to an instability of the edge towards a new reconstructed state with additional channels, and thereby demonstrate the incompleteness of the traditional edge theory.  相似文献

We report on our theoretical investigations that point to the possibility of a fractional quantum Hall effect with partial spin polarization at nu = 3/8. The physics of the incompressible state proposed here involves p-wave pairing of composite fermions in the spin reversed sector. The temperature and magnetic field regimes for the realization of this state are estimated.  相似文献

It is demonstrated that an understanding of the 5/2 fractional quantum Hall effect can be achieved within the composite fermion theory without appealing to the Pfaffian wave function. The residual interaction between composite fermions plays a crucial role in establishing incompressibility at this filling factor. This approach has the advantage of being amenable to systematic perturbative improvements, and produces ground as well as excited states. It, however, does not relate to non-Abelian statistics in any obvious manner.  相似文献

The activation gap Delta of the fractional quantum Hall states at constant fillings nu=2/3 and 2/5 has been measured as a function of the perpendicular magnetic field B. A linear dependence of Delta on B is observed while approaching the spin-polarization transition. This feature allows a direct measurement of the g factor of composite fermions which appears to be heavily renormalized by interactions and strongly sensitive to the electronic filling factor.  相似文献

The flux periodicity of thermodynamic properties of an annulus in the fractional quantum Hall state with a constriction is considered. It is found that -periodicity is obtained due to transfer of fractionally charged particles or composite fermions between the edges of the annulus, respectively. The result for the finite magnitude of the persistent current across a very strong constriction is presented, as obtained with an extension of Wen’s edge state theory.  相似文献
