The distance graph G(D) has the set of integers as vertices and two vertices are adjacent in G(D) if their difference is contained in the set DZ. A conjecture of Zhu states that if the chromatic number of G(D) achieves its maximum value |D|+1 then the graph has a triangle. The conjecture is proven to be true if |D|?3. We prove that the chromatic number of a distance graph with D={a,b,c,d} is five only if either D={1,2,3,4k} or D={a,b,a+b,b-a}. This confirms a stronger version of Zhu's conjecture for |D|=4, namely, if the chromatic number achieves its maximum value then the graph contains K4.  相似文献

It is well known that the graph invariant, ‘the Merrifield-Simmons index’ is important one in structural chemistry. The connected acyclic graphs with maximal and minimal Merrifield-Simmons indices are determined by Prodinger and Tichy [H. Prodinger, R.F. Tichy, Fibonacci numbers of graphs, Fibonacci Quart. 20 (1982) 16-21]. The sharp upper and lower bounds for the Merrifield-Simmons indices of unicyclic graphs are characterized by Pedersen and Vestergaard [A.S. Pedersen, P.D. Vestergaard, The number of independent sets in unicyclic graphs, Discrete Appl. Math. 152 (2005) 246-256]. The sharp upper bound for the Merrifield-Simmons index of bicyclic graphs is obtained by Deng, Chen and Zhang [H. Deng, S. Chen, J. Zhang, The Merrifield-Simmons index in (n,n+1)-graphs, J. Math. Chem. 43 (1) (2008) 75-91]. The sharp lower bound for the Merrifield-Simmons index of bicyclic graphs is determined by Jing and Li [W. Jing, S. Li, The number of independent sets in bicyclic graphs, Ars Combin, 2008 (in press)]. In this paper, we will consider the tricyclic graph, i.e., a connected graph with cyclomatic number 3. Let C be the class of triangle-free graphs with maximum degree four. A lower bound for the number of edges in a graph of C is derived in terms of its order p and independence β. Also a characterization of certain minimum independence graphs in C is provided. Let r(k) be the smallest integer such that every graph in C with at least r(k) vertices has independence at least k. The values of r(k) for all k may be derived from our main theorem and 413 obtained as the best possible lower bound for the independence ratio βp of graphs in C.  相似文献

A fullerene graph is a cubic 3-connected plane graph with (exactly 12) pentagonal faces and hexagonal faces. Let Fn be a fullerene graph with n vertices. A set of mutually disjoint hexagons of Fn is a sextet pattern if Fn has a perfect matching which alternates on and off every hexagon in . The maximum cardinality of sextet patterns of Fn is the Clar number of Fn. It was shown that the Clar number is no more than . Many fullerenes with experimental evidence attain the upper bound, for instance, C60 and C70. In this paper, we characterize extremal fullerene graphs whose Clar numbers equal . By the characterization, we show that there are precisely 18 fullerene graphs with 60 vertices, including C60, achieving the maximum Clar number 8 and we construct all these extremal fullerene graphs.  相似文献

The interval number of a graph G, denoted i(G), is the least positive integer t such that G is the intersection graph of sets, each of which is the union of t compact real intervals. It is known that every planar graph has interval number at most 3 and that this result is best possible. We investigate the maximum value of the interval number for graphs with higher genus and show that the maximum value of the interval number of graphs with genus g is between ?√g? and 3 + ?√3g?. 1000多年前,英国著名学者Alcuin曾提出过一个古老的渡河问题,即狼、羊和卷心菜的渡河问题.最近,Prisner和Csorba等人把这一问题推广到任意的"冲突图"G=(V,E)上,考虑了一类情况更一般的运输计划问题.现在监管者欲运输V中的所有"物品/点"渡河,这里V的两个点邻接当且仅当这两个点为冲突点.冲突点是指不能在无人监管的情况下留在一起的点.特别地,Alcuin渡河问题可转化成"冲突路"P_3上是否存在可行运输方案问题.图G的Alcuin数是指图G具有可行运输方案(即把V的点代表的"物品"全部运到河对岸)时船的最小容量.最大度为5且覆盖数至少为5的图和最大度Δ(G)≤4且覆盖数不小于Δ(G)-1的图的Alcuin数已经被确定.本文给出最大度为4且覆盖数不超过2和最大度为5且覆盖数不超过4的图的Alcuin数.至此,最大度不超过5的图的Alcuin数被完全确定.  相似文献

A k-colouring(not necessarily proper) of vertices of a graph is called acyclic, if for every pair of distinct colours i and j the subgraph induced by the edges whose endpoints have colours i and j is acyclic. We consider acyclic k-colourings such that each colour class induces a graph with a given(hereditary) property. In particular, we consider acyclic k-colourings in which each colour class induces a graph with maximum degree at most t, which are referred to as acyclic t-improper k-colourings. The acyclic t-improper chromatic number of a graph G is the smallest k for which there exists an acyclic t-improper k-colouring of G. We focus on acyclic colourings of graphs with maximum degree 4. We prove that 3 is an upper bound for the acyclic 3-improper chromatic number of this class of graphs. We also provide a non-trivial family of graphs with maximum degree4 whose acyclic 3-improper chromatic number is at most 2, namely, the graphs with maximum average degree at most 3. Finally, we prove that any graph G with Δ(G) 4 can be acyclically coloured with 4 colours in such a way that each colour class induces an acyclic graph with maximum degree at most 3.  相似文献

Let G be a planar graph with maximum degree 4. It is known that G is 8-totally choosable. It has been recently proved that if G has girth g?6, then G is 5-totally choosable.
