In this paper an analysis has been made to study heat and mass transfer in two-dimensional stagnation-point flow of an incompressible viscous fluid over a stretching vertical sheet in the presence of buoyancy force and thermal radiation. The similarity solution is used to transform the problem under consideration into a boundary value problem of nonlinear coupled ordinary differential equations containing Prandtl number, Schmidt number and Sherwood number which are solved numerically with appropriate boundary conditions for various values of the dimensionless parameters. Comparison of the present numerical results are found to be in excellent with the earlier published results under limiting cases. The effects of various physical parameters on the boundary layer velocity, temperature and concentration profiles are discussed in detail for both the cases of assisting and opposing flows. The computed values of the skin friction coefficient, local Nusselt number and Sherwood number are discussed for various values of physical parameters. The tabulated results show that the effect of radiation is to increase skin friction coefficient, local Nusselt number and Sherwood number.  相似文献

A boundary layer analysis is performed to study the influence of thermal radiation and buoyancy force on two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic flow of an incompressible viscous and electrically conducting fluid over a vertical stretching sheet embedded in a porous medium in the presence of inertia effect. The governing system of partial differential equations is first transformed into system of ordinary differential equations using self-similarity transformation. A special form for magnetic field is chosen to obtain the similarity solution. The transformed boundary layer equations are solved numerically for some important values of the physical parameters. The present results are compared with the previously published papers and the results are found to be in excellent agreement. The important features of the flow, heat and mass transfer characteristics for different values of thermal radiation, porous permeability, magnetic field and buoyancy parameters are analyzed and discussed. The effects of various physical parameters on the skin friction coefficient, local Nusselt number and local Sherwood number are also presented. It is found that increase in the value of thermal radiation parameter R 1 increases the skin friction coefficient and Sherwood number whereas reverse trend is seen for the local Nusselt number.  相似文献

An analysis is performed to study the effects of the chemical reaction and heat generation or absorption on a steady mixed convection boundary layer flow over a vertical stretching sheet with nonuniform slot mass transfer. The governing boundary layer equations with boundary conditions are transformed into the dimensionless form by a group of nonsimilar transformations. Nonsimilar solutions are obtained numerically by solving the coupled nonlinear partial differential equations using the quasi-linearization technique combined with an implicit finite difference scheme. The numerical computations are carried out for different values of dimensionless parameters to display the distributions of the velocity, temperature, concentration, local skin friction coefficient, local Nusselt number, and local Sherwood number. The results obtained indicate that the local Nusselt and Sherwood numbers increase with nonuniform slot suction, but nonuniform slot injection produces the opposite effect. The local Nusselt number decreases with heat generation and increases with heat absorption.  相似文献

An analysis is made for the steady mixed convection boundary layer flow near the two-dimensional stagnation-point flow of an incompressible viscous fluid over a stretching vertical sheet in its own plane. The stretching velocity and the surface temperature are assumed to vary linearly with the distance from the stagnation-point. Two equal and opposite forces are impulsively applied along the x-axis so that the wall is stretched, keeping the origin fixed in a viscous fluid of constant ambient temperature. The transformed ordinary differential equations are solved numerically for some values of the parameters involved using a very efficient numerical scheme known as the Keller-box method. The features of the flow and heat transfer characteristics are analyzed and discussed in detail. Both cases of assisting and opposing flows are considered. It is observed that, for assisting flow, both the skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number increase as the buoyancy parameter increases, while only the local Nusselt number increases but the skin friction coefficient decreases as the Prandtl number increases. For opposing flow, both the skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number decrease as the buoyancy parameter increases, but both increase as Pr increases. Comparison with known results is excellent.  相似文献

The effect of melting heat transfer on the two dimensional boundary layer flow of a micropolar fluid near a stagnation point embedded in a porous medium in the presence of internal heat generation/absorption is investigated. The governing non-linear partial differential equations describing the problem are reduced to a system of non-linear ordinary differential equations using similarity transformations solved numerically using the Chebyshev spectral method. Numerical results for velocity, angular velocity and temperature profiles are shown graphically and discussed for different values of the inverse Darcy number, the heat generation/absorption parameter, and the melting parameter. The effects of the pertinent parameters on the local skin-friction coefficient, the wall couple stress, and the local Nusselt number are tabulated and discussed. The results show that the inverse Darcy number has the effect of enhancing both velocity and temperature and suppressing angular velocity. It is also found that the local skin-friction coefficient decreases, while the local Nusselt number increases as the melting parameter increases.  相似文献

The effect of non-linear convection in a laminar three-dimensional Oldroyd-B fluid flow is addressed. The heat transfer phenomenon is explored by considering the non-linear thermal radiation and heat generation/absorption. The boundary layer assumptions are taken into account to govern the mathematical model of the flow analysis. Some suitable similarity variables are introduced to transform the partial differential equations into ordinary differential systems. The Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg fourth-and fifth-order techniques with the shooting method are used to obtain the solutions of the dimensionless velocities and temperature. The effects of various physical parameters on the fluid velocities and temperature are plotted and examined. A comparison with the exact and homotopy perturbation solutions is made for the viscous fluid case, and an excellent match is noted. The numerical values of the wall shear stresses and the heat transfer rate at the wall are tabulated and investigated. The enhancement in the values of the Deborah number shows a reverse behavior on the liquid velocities. The results show that the temperature and the thermal boundary layer are reduced when the nonlinear convection parameter increases. The values of the Nusselt number are higher in the non-linear radiation situation than those in the linear radiation situation.  相似文献

The present study addresses the three-dimensional flow of an Oldroyd-B fluid over a stretching surface with convective boundary conditions. The problem formulation is presented using the conservation laws of mass, momentum, and energy. The solutions to the dimensionless problems are computed. The convergence of series solutions by the homotopy analysis method (HAM) is discussed graphically and numerically. The graphs are plotted for various parameters of the temperature profile. The series solutions are verified by providing a comparison in a limiting case. The numerical values of the local Nusselt number are analyzed.  相似文献

The steady laminar boundary layer flow and heat transfer past a stretching sheet arre considered. Upper‐convected Maxwell (UCM) fluid is treated as a rheological model. The resulting nonlinear differential system is solved by homotopy analysis method (HAM). The influence of melting parameter (M), Prandtl number (Pr), Deborah number (β) and stretching ratio (A = a/c) on the velocity and temperature profiles is thoroughly examined. It is noticed that fields are effected appreciably with the variation of parameters. Furthermore, it is seen that the local Nusselt number is a decreasing function of melting parameter. Heat and fluid flow characteristics of blood flow in multi-stenosis arteries in the presence of magnetic field is considered. A mathematical model of the multi-stenosis inside the arteries is introduced. A finite difference scheme is used to solve the governing equations in terms of vorticity-stream function along with their boundary conditions. The effect of magnetic field and the degree of stenosis on wall shear stress and Nusselt number is investigated. It was found that magnetic field modifies the flow patterns and increases the heat transfer rate. The severity of the stenosis affects the wall shear stress characteristics significantly. The magnetic field torque will increase the thermal boundary layer thickness and the temperature gradient in the streaming blood, and hence increasing the local Nusselt number  相似文献

An analysis is performed to study the flow and heat transfer characteristics of laminar mixed convection boundary layer flows from inclined (including horizontal and vertical) surfaces embedded in a saturated porous medium with constant aiding external flows and uniform surface temperature. Both the streamwise and normal components of the buoyancy forces are retained in the momentum equations. Nondimensionalization of the boundary layer equations results in the following three governing parameter: (1)Gr/Re, the ratio of the Grashof number to the Reynolds number; (2)Pe x =Re x Pr, the Peclet number; (3) φ, the angle of inclination from the horizontal. The resulting nonsimilar equations are solved by an efficient implicit finite-difference scheme. Numerical results are presented for flows with different values ofGr/Re in the range of 0 to 50, over a wide range of the Peclet numbersPe x, and various values of φ ranging from 0 to 90 degrees. It is found that the local surface heat transfer rate increases with increasing the local Peclet number. In addition, as the plate is tilted from the horizontal to the vertical orientation, the local Nusselt number increases for a given Peclet number and the effect of the buoyancy force on the surface heat transfer rate increases.  相似文献

The paper discusses the statistical steady heat and momentum transfer problem in the inlet section of the plastic tubes. The modified two equation k–ɛ turbulent model utilizing variability of turbulent Prandtl number, Prt, was used for the analysis. Considering the thermophysical anisotropy of the tube material, a balance of local temperatures and local heat fluxes on the boundary between the fluid and the tube wall was assumed (conjugate heat transfer problem). The thermal boundary condition on the external surface of the tube (temperature) measured in the experiment was taken into account. The boundary problem described was solved by the control volume method. The values of the parameters of Pr and Re obtained from the experiments were included in the numerical calculations. Based on the results obtained, profiles of mean fluid temperatures, local Nusselt numbers on the internal and external surface of the tube, and profiles of temperatures on the internal surface of the tube and inside of the tube wall were determined. The analysis shows that changes in Prtand turbulence intensity, Tu, influence the local values of Nusselt numbers, and it also shows that the results for the local Nusselt numbers inside the tube obtained from numerical calculations are of great accuracy in comparison with results published in the available literature. Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) bioconvection of an incompressible electrically conducting nanofluid near a vertical wavy surface saturated porous medium containing both nanoparticle and gyrotactic microorganisms is investigated. The nanofluid is represented by a model that includes both Brownian motion and thermophoresis effects. A suitable set of non-dimensional variables are used to transform the governing boundary layer equations into a dimensionless form. The resulting nonlinear system is mapped to the vertical flat plate domain, and a non-similar solution is used to the obtained equations. The obtained non-similar system is then solved numerically using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. The influence of various physical parameters on the local Nusselt number, the local Sherwood number, the local density number of the motile microorganisms, the dimensionless velocity, the dimensionless temperature, and the rescaled density of motile microorganisms is studied. It is found that the local Nusselt number, the local Sherwood number, and the local density number of the motile microorganisms decrease by increasing either the Grashof number or the magnetic field parameter.  相似文献

The unsteady mixed convection flow of an incompressible laminar electrically conducting fluid over an impulsively stretched permeable vertical surface in an unbounded quiescent fluid in the presence of a transverse magnetic field has been investigated. At the same time, the surface temperature is suddenly increased from the surrounding fluid temperature or a constant heat flux is suddenly imposed on the surface. The problem is formulated in such a way that for small time it is governed by Rayleigh type of equation and for large time by Crane type of equation. The non-linear coupled parabolic partial differential equations governing the unsteady mixed convection flow under boundary layer approximations have been solved analytically by using the homotopy analysis method as well as numerically by an implicit finite difference scheme. The local skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number are found to decrease rapidly with time in a small time interval and they tend to steady-state values for t*≥5. They also increase with the buoyancy force and suction, but decrease with injection rate. The local skin friction coefficient increases with the magnetic field, but the local Nusselt number decreases. There is a smooth transition from the unsteady state to the steady state.  相似文献

The boundary layer flow of a viscoelastic fluid of the second-grade type over a rigid continuous plate moving through an otherwise quiescent fluid with constant velocity U is studied. Assuming the flow to be laminar and two-dimensional, local similarity solution is found with fluid's elasticity and plate's withdrawal speed as the main variables. Results are presented for velocity profiles, boundary layer thickness, wall skin friction coefficient and fluid entrainment in terms of the local Deborah number. A marked formation of boundary layer is predicted, even at low Reynolds numbers, provided the Deborah number is sufficiently large. The boundary layer thickness and the wall skin friction coefficient are found to scale with fluid's elasticity—both decreasing the higher the fluid's elasticity. The amount of fluid entrained is also predicted to decrease whenever a fluid exhibits elastic behavior.  相似文献

The flow of a FENE-fluid through a 4:1:4 constriction in a tube is computed by a split Lagrangian–Eulerian finite element method. In steady flow it is found that the upstream vortex grows with increasing Deborah number, while the down-stream vortex diminishes and disappears. The steady pressure drop decreases with Deborah number unless the finite extensibility L is quite small. Starting from rest at high Deborah number, the upstream vortex grows in two stages, each with their own time scales. A simple model of this growth is proposed.  相似文献

The boundary layer flow of a nanofluid past a stretching/shrinking sheet with hydrodynamic and thermal slip boundary conditions is studied. Numerical solutions to the governing equations are obtained using a shooting method. The results are found for the skin friction coefficient, the local Nusselt number, and the local Sherwood number as well as the velocity, temperature, and concentration profiles for some values of the velocity slip parameter, thermal slip parameter, stretching/shrinking parameter, thermophoresis parameter, and Brownian motion parameter. The results show that the local Nusselt number, which represents the heat transfer rate, is lower for higher values of thermal slip parameter, thermophoresis parameter, and Brownian motion parameter.  相似文献

The influence of thermal radiation on the flow and heat transfer within Newtonian liquid film over an unsteady stretching sheet with and without thermocapillarity is examined. The governing non‐linear partial differential equations describing the problem are reduced to a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations using similarity transformation, which is solved numerically for different values of the thermal radiation parameter and the thermocapillarity parameter. The results show that the dimensionless velocity, the film thickness and the local Nusselt number increase as the thermocapillarity parameter increases, while the free surface temperature decreases with increasing the thermocapillarity parameter. Also, both the dimensionless temperature and the free surface temperature increase and the local Nusselt number decreases as the thermal radiation parameter increases. The flow and heat transfer in enclosures with conducting multiple partitions and side walls were numerically analyzed. Side walls were kept at isothermal conditions, while top and bottom walls were insulated. Employing control volume approach, a computer program based on SIMPLE algorithm was developed. Computations were carried out to investigate the effects of Rayleigh number, number of partitions and cavity aspect ratios on the heat transfer rate. The mean Nusselt numbers were calculated from computed temperature fields. It was observed that, the mean Nusselt number decreases with increasing partition number. It is inversely proportional to (1+N) for N≤4. For all partition numbers, the mean Nusselt number increases with increasing Rayleigh number. On the other hand, the cavity aspect ratio does not affect the mean Nusselt number to a considerable extent for considered aspect ratios in this study.  相似文献

The radiation effect on the mixed convection flow of an optically dense viscous fluid adjacent to an isothermal cone embedded in a saturated porous medium with Rosseland diffusion approximation is numerically investigated. The entire regime of the mixed convection is included, as the mixed convection parameter of χ varies from 0 (pure free convection) to 1 (pure forced convection). The transformed nonlinear system of equations is solved by using an implicit finite difference method. Numerical results are given for the dimensionless temperature profiles and the local Nusselt number for various values of the mixed convection parameter χ, the cone angle parameter m, the radiation-conduction parameter R d and the surface temperature parameter H. The local Nusselt number decreases initially, reaches a minimum in the intermediate value of χ and then increases gradually. It is apparent that increasing the cone angle parameter m enhances the local Nusselt number. The local Nusselt number is significantly increased for the large values of the radiation-conduction parameter R d and the surface temperature parameter H, i.e., radiation effect becomes pronounced. The viscous dissipation and heat transfer in the Darcy-Forchheimer flow by a rotating disk are examined. The partial slip conditions are invoked. The optimal series solutions are computed via the optimal homotopic analysis method(OHAM). The thermophoresis and Brownian motions are studied. The Darcy-Forchheimer relation characterizes the porous space. The roles of influential variables on the physical quantities are graphically examined. A reduction in the local Nusselt number is observed through thermophoresis and thermal slip parameters. The local Sherwood number depicts an increasing trend for the higher Brownian motion and concentration slip parameters.  相似文献
