Large‐eddy simulation (LES) and Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes simulation (RANS) with different turbulence models (including the standard k?ε, the standard k?ω, the shear stress transport k?ω (SST k?ω), and Spalart–Allmaras (S–A) turbulence models) have been employed to compute the turbulent flow of a two‐dimensional turbulent boundary layer over an unswept bump. The predictions of the simulations were compared with available experimental measurements in the literature. The comparisons of the LES and the SST k?ω model including the mean flow and turbulence stresses are in satisfied agreements with the available measurements. Although the flow experiences a strong adverse pressure gradient along the rear surface, the boundary layer is unique in that intermittent detachment occurring near the wall. The numerical results indicate that the boundary layer is not followed by mean‐flow separation or incipient separation as shown from the numerical results. The resolved turbulent shear stress is in a reasonable agreement with the experimental data, though the computational result of LES shows that its peak is overpredicted near the trailing edge of the bump, while the other used turbulence models, except the standard k?ε, underpredicts it. Analysis of the numerical results from LES confirms the experimental data, in which the existence of internal layers over the bump surface upstream of the summit and along the downstream flat plate. It also demonstrates that the quasi‐step increase in skin friction is due to perturbations in pressure gradient. The surface curvature enhances the near‐wall shear production of turbulent stresses, and is responsible for the formation of the internal layers. The aim of the present work is to examine the response and prediction capability of LES with the dynamic eddy viscosity model as a sub‐grid scale to the complex turbulence structure with the presence of streamline curvature generated by a bumpy surface. Aiming to reduce the computational costs with focus on the mean behavior of the non‐equilibrium turbulent boundary layer of flow over the bump surface, the present investigation also explains the best capability of one of the used RANS turbulence models to capture the driving mechanism for the surprisingly rapid return to equilibrium over the trailing flat plate found in the measurements. The main bottle neck for using large eddy simulations (LES) at high Reynolds number is the requirement of very fine meshes near walls. Hybrid LES-Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) was invented to get rid of this limitation. In this method, unsteady RANS (URANS) is used near walls and away from walls LES is used. The matching between URANS and LES takes place in the inner log-region. In the present paper, a method to improve standard LES-RANS is evaluated. The improvement consists of adding instantaneous turbulent fluctuations (forcing conditions) at the matching plane in order to provide the equations in the LES region with relevant turbulent structures. The fluctuations are taken from a DNS of a generic boundary layer. Simulations of fully developed channel flow and plane asymmetric diffuser flow are presented. Hybrid LES-RANS is used both with and without forcing conditions.  相似文献

In the case of turbine combustors operating with liquid fuel the combustion process is governed by the liquid fuel atomization and its dispersion in the combustion chamber. By highly unsteady flow field conditions the transient interaction between the liquid and the gaseous phase is of interest, because it results in a temporal variation of air–fuel ratio which leads to a fluctuating temperature distribution. The objective of this research was the investigation of transient flow field phenomena (e.g. large coherent structures) on droplet dynamics and dispersion of an isothermal flow (of inert water droplets) as a necessary first step towards a full analysis of spray combustion in real-life devices. The advanced injector system for lean jet engine combustors PERM (Partial Evaporated Rapid Mixing) was applied, generating a dilute polydispersed spray in a swirled flow field. Experiments were performed using Phase Doppler Anemometry (PDA) and a patternator to determine the droplet polydispersity, concentration maps, and velocity profiles in the flow. An important finding is the effect of large-scale coherent structures due mainly to the precessing of the vortex core (PVC) of the swirling air jet on the particle dispersion patterns. The experimental results then serve as reference data to assess the accuracy of the Eulerian–Lagrangian computations using a Large Eddy Simulation (LES), a Unsteady Reynolds-Average Navier–Stokes Simulation (URANS) and two simplified (steady-state) simulations. There, a simplified droplet injection model was used and the required boundary conditions of injected droplet sizes were obtained from measurements. Important transient effects of deterministic droplet separation observed during experiments, could be perfectly replicated with this injection model. It is convincingly shown, through extensive computations, that the resolution of instantaneous vortical structures is indeed crucial; hence the LES, or a reasonably-well resolved URANS are preferred over the steady-state solutions with additional, stochastic-type, turbulent dispersion models.  相似文献

Large eddy simulation (LES) is a viable and powerful tool to analyse unsteady three-dimensional turbulent flows. In this article, the method of LES is used to compute a plane turbulent supersonic boundary layer subjected to different pressure gradients. The pressure gradients are generated by allowing the flow to pass in the vicinity of an expansion–compression ramp (inclined backward-facing step with leeward-face angle of 25°) for an upstream Mach number of 2.9. The inflow boundary condition is the main problem for all turbulent wall-bounded flows. An approach to solve this problem is to extract instantaneous velocities, temperature and density data from an auxiliary simulation (inflow generator). To generate an appropriate realistic inflow condition to the inflow generator itself the rescaling technique for compressible flows is used. In this method, Morkovin's hypothesis, in which the total temperature fluctuations are neglected compared with the static temperature fluctuations, is applied to rescale and generate the temperature profile at inlet. This technique was successfully developed and applied by the present author for an LES of subsonic three-dimensional boundary layer of a smooth curved ramp. The present LES results are compared with the available experimental data as well as numerical data. The positive impact of the rescaling formulation of the temperature is proven by the convincing agreement of the obtained results with the experimental data compared with published numerical work and sheds light on the quality of the developed compressible inflow generator.  相似文献

Generalized Lattice Boltzmann equation (GLBE) was used for computation of turbulent channel flow for which large eddy simulation (LES) was employed as a turbulence model. The subgrid‐scale turbulence effects were simulated through a shear‐improved Smagorinsky model (SISM), which is capable of predicting turbulent near wall region accurately without any wall function. Computations were done for a relatively coarse grid with shear Reynolds number of 180 in a parallelized code. Good numerical stability was observed for this computational framework. The results of mean velocity distribution across the channel showed good correspondence with direct numerical simulation (DNS) data. Negligible discrepancies were observed between the present computations and those reported from DNS for the computed turbulent statistics. Three‐dimensional instantaneous vorticity contours showed complex vortical structures that appeared in such flow geometries. It was concluded that such a framework is capable of predicting accurate results for turbulent channel flow without adding significant complications and the computational cost to the standard Smagorinsky model. In this work, a hybrid numerical approach to predict the vibrational responses of planar structures excited by a turbulent boundary layer is presented. The approach combines an uncorrelated wall plane wave technique with the finite element method. The wall pressure field induced by a turbulent boundary layer is obtained as a set of uncorrelated wall pressure plane waves. The amplitude of these plane waves are determined from the cross spectrum density function of the wall pressure field given either by empirical models from literature or from experimental data. The response of the planar structure subject to a turbulent boundary layer excitation is then obtained from an ensemble average of the different realizations. The numerical technique is computationally efficient as it rapidly converges using a small number of realizations. To demonstrate the method, the vibrational responses of two panels with simply supported or clamped boundary conditions and excited by a turbulent flow are considered. In the case study comprising a plate with simply supported boundary conditions, an analytical solution is employed for verification of the method. For both cases studies, numerical results from the hybrid approach are compared with experimental data measured in two different anechoic wind tunnels.  相似文献

An efficient hybrid uncorrelated wall plane waves–boundary element method (UWPW-BEM) technique is proposed to predict the flow-induced noise from a structure in low Mach number turbulent flow. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are used to estimate the turbulent boundary layer parameters such as convective velocity, boundary layer thickness, and wall shear stress over the surface of the structure. The spectrum of the wall pressure fluctuations is evaluated from the turbulent boundary layer parameters and by using semi-empirical models from literature. The wall pressure field underneath the turbulent boundary layer is synthesized by realizations of uncorrelated wall plane waves (UWPW). An acoustic BEM solver is then employed to compute the acoustic pressure scattered by the structure from the synthesized wall pressure field. Finally, the acoustic response of the structure in turbulent flow is obtained as an ensemble average of the acoustic pressures due to all realizations of uncorrelated plane waves. To demonstrate the hybrid UWPW-BEM approach, the self-noise generated by a flat plate in turbulent flow with Reynolds number based on chord Rec = 4.9 × 105 is predicted. The results are compared with those obtained from a large eddy simulation (LES)-BEM technique as well as with experimental data from literature.  相似文献

The objectives of this study are to investigate a thermal field in a turbulent boundary layer with suddenly changing wall thermal conditions by means of direct numerical simulation (DNS), and to evaluate predictions of a turbulence model in such a thermal field, in which DNS of spatially developing boundary layers with heat transfer can be conducted using the generation of turbulent inflow data as a method. In this study, two types of wall thermal condition are investigated using DNS and predicted by large eddy simulation (LES) and Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equation simulation (RANS). In the first case, the velocity boundary layer only develops in the entrance of simulation, and the flat plate is heated from the halfway point, i.e., the adiabatic wall condition is adopted in the entrance, and the entrance region of thermal field in turbulence is simulated. Then, the thermal boundary layer develops along a constant temperature wall followed by adiabatic wall. In the second case, velocity and thermal boundary layers simultaneously develop, and the wall thermal condition is changed from a constant temperature to an adiabatic wall in the downstream region. DNS results clearly show the statistics and structure of turbulent heat transfer in a constant temperature wall followed by an adiabatic wall. In the first case, the entrance region of thermal field in turbulence can be also observed. Thus, both the development and the entrance regions in thermal fields can be explored, and the effects upstream of the thermal field on the adiabatic region are investigated. On the other hand, evaluations of predictions by LES and RANS are conducted using DNS results. The predictions of both LES and RANS almost agree with the DNS results in both cases, but the predicted temperature variances near the wall by RANS give different results as compared with DNS. This is because the dissipation rate of temperature variance is difficult to predict by the present RANS, which is found by the evaluation using DNS results.  相似文献

In the present study, both LES and unsteady RANS computations are presented, for turbulent natural convection of air inside differentially-heated rectangular tilted cavities using a finite volume code (Code_Saturne), for an aspect ratio of H/L?=?28.6 and Rayleigh number of 0.86×106. Attention is focused on two angles of inclination: 15° to the horizontal with hot lower and cold upper wall, the 15° unstable case, and the mirror image of this case where the angle is the same but with a hot upper and cold lower wall, the 15° stable case. In accordance with recent experimental data, the LES computations for both the stable and unstable tilted cavities returned three-dimensional time-averaged flow fields. In the case of the unstably stratified enclosure, the flow is highly unsteady with coherent turbulent structures in the core of the enclosure. Time-averaged temperature, velocity and resolved turbulence intensities resulting from LES computations show close agreement to measured data. Subsequent comparisons of different URANS schemes with LES are used in order to explore to what extent these models are able to reproduce the large-scale unsteady flow structures. All URANS schemes have been found to be able to reproduce the 3-D unsteady flow features present in the 15° unstable cavity. However, the low-Reynolds-number model tested, as well as requiring a high resolution near-wall grid, also needed a finer grid in the core region than the high-Reynolds-number models, thus making it computationally very expensive. Flow within the 15° stable cavity also shows some 3-D features, although it is significantly less unsteady, and the URANS models tested here have been less successful in reproducing this flow pattern. The overall heat transfer is presented here for both differentially heated enclosures.  相似文献

We describe large-eddy simulations (LES) of the flat-plate turbulent boundary layer in the presence of an adverse pressure gradient. The stretched-vortex subgrid-scale model is used in the domain of the flow coupled to a wall model that explicitly accounts for the presence of a finite pressure gradient. The LES are designed to match recent experiments conducted at the University of Melbourne wind tunnel where a plate section with zero pressure gradient is followed by section with constant adverse pressure gradient. First, LES are described at Reynolds numbers based on the local free-stream velocity and the local momentum thickness in the range 6560–13,900 chosen to match the experimental conditions. This is followed by a discussion of further LES at Reynolds numbers at approximately 10 times and 100 times these values, which are well out of range of present day direct numerical simulation and wall-resolved LES. For the lower Reynolds number runs, mean velocity profiles, one-point turbulent statistics of the velocity fluctuations, skin friction and the Clauser and acceleration parameters along the streamwise, adverse pressure-gradient domain are compared to the experimental measurements. For the full range of LES, the relationship of the skin-friction coefficient, in the form of the ratio of the local free-stream velocity to the local friction velocity, to both Reynolds number and the Clauser parameter is explored. At large Reynolds numbers, a region of collapse is found that is well described by a simple log-like empirical relationship over two orders of magnitude. This is expected to be useful for constant adverse-pressure gradient flows. It is concluded that the present adverse pressure gradient boundary layers are far from an equilibrium state.  相似文献

在湍流数值模拟方法中,大涡模拟方法可以提供丰富的大涡旋信息,已逐渐成为复杂湍流问题数值研究的重要方法。而大涡模拟中,最重要的一环是尽量准确地构建能反映流场物理本质特征的亚格子应力模型。基于该思想,将一种新型的大涡模拟亚格子应力模型-Vreman亚格子应力模型用于高雷诺数三维后台阶流动的求解,计算结果与实验结果进行对比分析结果较吻合,验证了该模型的可靠性。这是对该模型用于无任何均匀流动方向的高雷诺数复杂湍流非定常流动的首次检验,计算结果优于基于传统的Smagorinsky涡粘性的动态亚格子模型。  相似文献

The performance of implicit large eddy simulation (ILES) of a supersonic flat-plate turbulent boundary layer flow by weighted compact nonlinear scheme (WCNS) has been investigated. In view of features of WCNS and ILES, it was expected that ILES by WCNS could be an efficient approach to perform LES of supersonic turbulent flows. The flowfield calculated by WCNS was of lower turbulent intensity compared with an explicit LES data obtained by a numerical scheme of the same order of accuracy on a computational grid of similar resolution. It was concluded that the numerical dissipation inherent in WCNS is so large that applying WCNS to ILES of this flowfield is inefficient compared with explicit LES.  相似文献

This paper describes a combined experimental and numerical study of scalar transport in spatially developing, two-stream, turbulent mixing layers with velocity ratios of approximately 2:1. The experimental mixing layer was created by an S-shaped splitter plate mounted in a wind tunnel, and the concentration field was realized by releasing incense smoke into the high-speed side boundary layer above the splitter plate. Simultaneous measurements of the velocity and concentration fields were performed. A 12-sensor hot-wire probe was used to measure the velocity field and its gradients, while the concentration field was recorded with digital photographs of the laser-illuminated smoke. In parallel, a large-eddy simulation (LES) of the spatially developing mixing layer was carried out. Auxiliary turbulent boundary layer LES were used to provide high quality inflow boundary conditions for the velocity and concentration fields. By synchronizing the velocity and concentration measurements, concentration fluxes were also determined. Octant analysis based on the sign combinations of the velocity and concentration fuctuations was performed on the flux data to investigate the scalar transport processes. It was found that octants compatible with mean gradient transport of the scalar contribute most to the scalar fluxes. Conditional planar averages of scalar and momentum fluxes were obtained to determine their spatial distribution with respect to the organized roller and rib vortices of the mixing layer, and distinct patterns were observed. The simulation provided additional insight about the flow and scalar flux distribution topology. This topology was found to be partially compatible with simple models of roller and rib vortices that transport the scalar in a mean gradient sense.  相似文献

The paper describes the validation of a newly developed very LES (VLES) method for the simulation of turbulent separated flow. The new VLES method is a unified simulation approach that can change seamlessly from Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes to DNS depending on the numerical resolution. Four complex test cases are selected to validate the performance of the new method, that is, the flow past a square cylinder at Re = 3000 confined in a channel (with a blockage ratio of 20%), the turbulent flow over a circular cylinder at Re = 3900 as well as Re = 140,000, and a turbulent backward‐facing step flow with a thick incoming boundary layer at Re = 40,000. The simulation results are compared with available experimental, LES, and detached eddy simulation‐type results. The new VLES model performs well overall, and the predictions are satisfactory compared with previous experimental and numerical results. It is observed that the new VLES method is quite efficient for the turbulent flow simulations; that is, good predictions can be obtained using a quite coarse mesh compared with the previous LES method. Discussions of the implementation of the present VLES modeling are also conducted on the basis of the simulations of turbulent channel flow up to high Reynolds number of Reτ = 4000. The efficiency of the present VLES modeling is also observed in the channel flow simulation. From a practical point of view, this new method has considerable potential for more complex turbulent flow simulations at relative high Reynolds numbers. In computations involving heat transfer in turbulent flow past bodies it is necessary to assume turbulent Prandtl number distribution across the boundary layer. A review and comparison of results obtained by different authors are given, e.g., in [1–5]. Unfortunately, the existing data are so contradictory that, at present, it does not appear to be possible to establish reliably a function that determines turbulent Prandtl number distribution across the boundary layer. The absence of sufficiently reliable and general results on the distribution of turbulent Prandtl number led to the result that in the majority of studies conducted in earlier years its value was assumed a constant and either close to or equal to one. The effect of turbulent Prandtl number on the intensity of heat transfer from a flat plate is numerically investigated in the present paper. The thermal, turbulent boundary layer equation is integrated for this purpose at different values of turbulent Prandtl number and results are compared with experimental data. Results from [6], where the thermal boundary layer was numerically integrated with Prt=1 and compared with experimental data, were used for comparison in the present paper. Towards a Unified Turbulence Simulation Approach for Wall-Bounded Flows   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes/Large-Eddy Simulation (RANS/LES) methodology has received considerable attention in recent years, especially in its application to wall-bounded flows at high-Reynolds numbers. In the conventional zonal hybrid approach, eddy-viscosity-type RANS and subgrid scale models are applied in the RANS and LES zones, respectively. In contrast, the non-zonal hybrid approach uses only a generalized turbulence model, which provides a unified simulation approach that spans the continuous spectrum of modeling/simulation schemes from RANS to LES. A particular realization of the non-zonal approach, known as partially resolved numerical simulation (PRNS), uses a generalized turbulence model obtained from a rescaling of a conventional RANS model through the introduction of a resolution control function F R , where F R is used to characterize the degree of modeling required to represent the unresolved scales of turbulent motion. A new generalized functional form for F R in PRNS is proposed in this study, and its performance is compared with unsteady RANS (URANS) and LES computations for attached and separated wall-bounded turbulent flows. It is demonstrated that PRNS behaves similarly to LES, but outperforms URANS in general.  相似文献

The present paper evaluates a method for improving standard LES-RANS. The improvement consists of adding instantaneous turbulent fluctuations (forcing conditions) at the matching plane between the LES and URANS regions in order to trigger the equations to resolve turbulence. The turbulent fluctuations are taken from synthesized homogeneous turbulence assuming a modified von Kármán spectrum. Both isotropic and non-isotropic fluctuations are evaluated. The new approach is applied to fully developed channel flow and it is shown that the imposed fluctuations considerably improve the predictions. It is found that increasing the prescribed turbulent length scale of the synthesized turbulence provides excellent agreement with the classical log-law.  相似文献

This paper first presents the turbulent heat transfer phenomenon of the boundary layer over a 2-dimensional hill using the direct numerical simulation (DNS). DNS results reveal turbulent heat transfer phenomena in the boundary layer over a 2-dimensional hill affected by the flow acceleration and the concave wall at the foreface of a hill, the convex wall at the top of the hill, and the flow deceleration, separation, and reattachment and the concave wall at the back of the hill. The prediction of turbulent heat transfer, the turbulence models of LES and HLR should be assessed in such heat transfer because these models have seldom been evaluated in the complex turbulent heat transfer. Therefore, this paper also presents evaluations of predictions of LES and HLR in the complicated turbulent heat transfer which is the boundary layer with heat transfer over a 2-dimensional hill. Consequently, this paper obviously shows the detailed turbulent heat transfer phenomena of a boundary layer over a 2-dimensional hill via DNS, and the evaluation results of prediction accuracy of LES and HLR for the heat transfer. LES and HLR give good prediction in comparison with DNS results, but the predicted reattachment and separation points are slightly different from DNS.  相似文献

In this study, the effect of heat transfer on the compressible turbulent shear layer and shockwave interaction in a scramjet has been investigated. To this end, highly resolved Large Eddy Simulations (LES) are performed to explore the effect of wall thermal conditions on the behavior of a reattaching free shear layer interacting with an oblique shock in compressible turbulent flows. Various wall-to-recovery temperature ratios are considered, and results are compared to the adiabatic wall. It is found that the wall temperature affects the reattachment location and the shock behavior in the interaction region. Furthermore, fluctuating heat flux exhibits a strong intermittent behavior with severe heat transfer compared to the mean, characterized by scattered spots. The distribution of the Stanton number shows a strong heat transfer and complex pattern within the interaction, with the maximum thermal (heat transfer rates) and dynamic loads (root-mean-square wall pressure) found for the case of the cold wall. The analysis of LES data reveals that the thermal boundary condition can significantly impact the wall pressure fluctuations level. The primary mechanism for changes in the flow unsteadiness due to the wall thermal condition is linked to the reattaching shear layer, which agrees with the compressible turbulent boundary layer theory.  相似文献

In this paper, a three-dimensional filter-matrix lattice Boltzmann (FMLB) model based on large eddy simulation (LES) was verified for simulating wall-bounded turbulent flows. The Vreman subgrid-scale model was employed in the present FMLB–LES framework, which had been proved to be capable of predicting turbulent near-wall region accurately. The fully developed turbulent channel flows were performed at a friction Reynolds number Reτ of 180. The turbulence statistics computed from the present FMLB–LES simulations, including mean stream velocity profile, Reynolds stress profile and root-mean-square velocity fluctuations greed well with the LES results of multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) LB model, and some discrepancies in comparison with those direct numerical simulation (DNS) data of Kim et al. was also observed due to the relatively low grid resolution. Moreover, to investigate the influence of grid resolution on the present LES simulation, a DNS simulation on a finer gird was also implemented by present FMLB–D3Q19 model. Comparisons of detailed computed various turbulence statistics with available benchmark data of DNS showed quite well agreement.  相似文献
