New computer modelling of light scattering and its propagation through liquid crystal has been presented using T-matrix method in the structural phase transition regions. Numerical aspects of light scattering process, which are based on numerically solving Maxwell's equations, were calculated for some nematic liquid crystals. Firstly, we described in detail T-matrix method for computing light scattering from nematic liquid crystals and presented results of benchmark computations for the considered model. We reported results of extensive calculations for polydisperse, randomly oriented rod-like multilayered systems (nematic liquid crystals). Our results are associated with light scattering by ferroelectric and ferroelastic materials.  相似文献

In this work, electrical measurements were performed on a polymer-dispersed LC sample so that we could demonstrate the temperature dependent molecular behavior, determined according to the electrical response of the system. Experimental results are found to be in favorable accordance with the molecular theory in several aspects. Critical temperatures, order parameters and entropy of transition are acquired for the studied system.  相似文献

A self-consistent treatment of a phase transition with a scalar order parameter in the ordered and disordered state is described. The factorization of the correlation functions in the disordered phase leads to a shift of the transition temperature, a linear divergence (=1) for the correlation length, a quadratic divergence (=2) for the susceptibility, and a finite value (=–1) for the specific heat. In the ordered phase the factorization of the correlation functions leads to no divergences in the correlation length and susceptibility. A study of the free energy shows that order persists above the transition temperature found by assuming disorder. The requirement of thermodynamic stability induces a first-order transition at a temperature which lies between the bare transition temperature and the shifted one.Supported in part by NSF grant No-GP-17560.This work is in partial fulfillment of Ph.D. requirements at Brandeis University.  相似文献

The azimuthal anchoring energy of the nematic liquid crystal 4-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenil (5CB) on a poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (teflon, PTFE) film is measured for the first time. The PTFE film is deposed using the Wittmann and Smith technique which consists on rubbing a bar of this polymer against a glass substrate at a controlled temperature and pressure. Measurements of the azimuthal anchoring energy are made with a reflectometric technique which provides high accuracy and sensitivity. The dependence of the azimuthal anchoring energy on temperature and on the rubbing pressure is investigated. The extrapolation length remains virtually constant in the whole temperature range of the nematic phase except for an increase of 25% close to the clearing temperature. The azimuthal anchoring energy is somewhat strong and increases with increasing the deposition pressure of PTFE. The observation of a relevant pre-transitional anisotropy of the reflection coefficients in the isotropic phase proves that the surface interactions favor an excess of orientational order. Ageing of the anchoring energy and gliding of the easy axis are experimentally observed. Both these phenomena suggest the presence of an anisotropic adsorbed layer of nematic molecules on the PTFE film.  相似文献

Summary The elastic deformations in nematic liquid crystals are analysed in one and two dimensions. The influence of the flexoelectric polarization on the elastic properties of the medium is studied. It is shown that for one-dimensional deformations, the presence of the flexoelectric polarization introduces a renormalization of the elastic constants. On the contrary in the bidimensional case, the effect of the flexoelectricity is not a simple renormalization of the elastic constants. The profiles of the electric potential and of the tilt angle are evaluated for the cases in which the substrate is an insulating or conducting material. The validity of the calculations is discussed by considering the value of Debye's screening length of the nematic liquid crystal.  相似文献

Summary A new reflectometric method to measure the azimuthal anchoring energy at the interface between a nematic liquid crystal and an isotropic method is proposed. The spurious contribution to the reflectivity coefficients due to the presence of a director-field distortion near the interface is calculated by using the numerical Berreman algorithm and is shown to be negligible for magnetic fields small enough (H<10 kG). Preliminary measurements of the azimuthal anchoring energy at the interface between the NLC 5CB and a rubbed glass plate are given. Research supported in part by MPI and in part by CNR.  相似文献

We investigate theoretically some phase transitions in liquid crystals in the presence of a laser beam. We found, in non-absorbing nematics, a laser-induced one-way transition from a paranematic to a nematic phase. In absorbing nematics we found, in addition to this transition, a one-way transition from a nematic to a paranematic phase with increasing laser intensity. Further, we found a reentrant nematic or a reentrant paranematic via paranematic or nematic phase respectively. In the case of smectic A, laser absorption results in a coupling between the positional and orientational orders. As a result, the smectic A to nematic transition can change from second order to first order and the smectic C to smectic A transition can become first-order in the field of a laser.  相似文献

The transient behavior of electrically induced deformations of parallel oriented nematic liquid crystal layers was investigated. The nematic material used was a mixture of disubstituted benzoyloxybenzoic acid esters the dielectric anisotropy of which is positive at dc and low frequencies, and changes sign in the kHz range. The decay time of a deformation induced by a low frequency field can be considerably reduced by switching the frequency to the range where the dielectric anisotropy is negative. This effect becomes even more pronounced for higher viscosities.  相似文献

In the present study, surface properties namely surface tension and surface entropy of liquid transition metals have been reported. The surface entropy of liquid Fe, Co and Ni metals has been investigated using the expression derived by Gosh et al. [R.C. Gosh, A.Z. Ziauddin Ahmed, G.M. Bhuiyan, Eur. Phys. J. B 56 (2007) 177]. To describe interionic interaction the pseudopotential approach has been used and radial distribution functions have been determined from the solution of Ornstein-Zernike integral equation. The calculated values of surface tension and surface entropy agree well with experiment. The present study shows that the expression derived by Gosh et al. leads to a good estimation for the surface entropy.  相似文献

A crystalline substrate such as mica or gypsum can orient a thin layer of nematic liquid crystal spread on top. By adsorbing one or more other kinds of molecules onto the surface, we have observed transitions in the orientation of the molecules on the surface. These “anchoring transitions” are analyzed via Landau-Ginzburg theory and may be first or second-order. The second-order anchoring transition is the first two-dimensional system where critical fluctuations may be observed optically.  相似文献

We analyse the influence of adsorbed ions and the resulting surface electric field and its gradient on the anchoring properties of nematics with ionic conductivity. We take into account two physical mechanisms for the coupling of the nematic director with the surface electric field: (i) the dielectric anisotropy and (ii) the coupling of the quadrupolar component of the flexoelectric coefficient with the field gradient. It is shown that for sufficiently large fields near saturated coverage of the adsorbed ions, there can be a spontaneous curvature distortion in the cell even when the anchoring energy is infinitely strong. We also discuss the director distortion when the anchoring energy of the surface is finite. Investigations on the phase diagrams of two bi-component mixtures of liquid crystals are presented. Whereas in one of the bi-component systems, smectic A (SmA) phase is seen to be induced, in the other case the so-called nematic “island” has been observed. The dielectric properties of magnetically oriented sample forming nematic phase and induced smectic phase in one of the mixtures, and a nematic “island” and SmA phase in the other mixture, were measured in the frequency range from 1?Hz to 10?MHz at different temperatures. The transition temperatures obtained from the polarizing microscope and differential scanning calorimeter measurements agree well with the dielectric relaxation data.  相似文献

In this paper we discuss the direct isotropic to chiral smectic-C phase transition on the basis of a phenomenological theory. The model free energy is written in terms of the coupled order parameters including the spontaneous polarization. We present a detailed analysis of the different phases that can occur and analyze the question under which conditions a direct isotropic to chiral smectic-C phase transition is possible when compared to other phase transitions. On the basis of this model the isotropic-smectic-C* transition is always of first order. The theoretical predictions are compared with the available experimental results.-1  相似文献

High pressure experimental studies show that in certain mesogenic materials, the nematic-smectic A (N-Sm A) transition temperature TAN exhibits nonlinear pressure dependence. As a consequence, the material shows reentrant phenomena that is a phase sequence nematic — smectic A — reentrant nematic appears. The characteristic features of this phenomenon have been addressed here within the framework of Landau-de-Gennes theory, where the coupling between nematic and smectic A order parameters (γ, λeff) plays an important role. The cubic coupling γ is chosen to be negative in order to form Sm A phase whereas the biquadratic coupling λeff is made large and positive to obtain reentrant behaviour. In the present work, we incorporate the pressure dependence in the theory through γ and λeff which justifies the experimental pressure dependence in the reentrant transition temperature . The pressure dependence of γ and λeff are employed in the calculation of excess specific heat capacity near the reentrant transition. The computed heat capacity shows strong pressure dependence near the reentrant transition which can be confirmed from high pressure measurement.  相似文献

The effect of a surface electric field produced by ionic adsorption on the molecular orientation of a nematic liquid crystal sample is analyzed. The eigenvalue problem for a semi-infinite medium is analytically solved both for strong and weak anchoring situations. The threshold instabilities are numerically determined and it is shown that the homeotropic pattern can be destabilized also in the situation of strong anchoring. The dependence of the threshold field on the anchoring strength and on the surface polarization is determined by taking into account also the coupling of the quadrupolar component of the flexoelectric coefficient with the field gradient. Within the framework of Landau-de-Gennes formulation, we analyse the effect of pressure on electric-field-induced phase transitions in a liquid crystal which shows spontaneously an isotropic-smectic A transition. Inferring from the experimental pressure dependences on the layer spacing in smectic A phase, as well as the nematic-smectic A metastable temperature T*AN, we incorporated the pressure dependence in the free energy through (the surface energy term) and the coupling between the quadrupolar nematic ordering Qij and the smectic order parameter ψ. From the S-T phase diagram, we found that the stability of field-induced nematic phase increases with pressure, whereas the discontinuity of the transition decreases. Also, the region where paranematic phase transits directly to smectic A phase increases with pressure.  相似文献

Using optical rotation effect, a sensitive, simple optical analytical system is developed for determining the phase transition temperatures of liquid crystals (LCs). When a monochromatic polarized light passes through LCs sample and analyzer, the light intensity changes with temperature. Especially, during the phase transition process, the intensity varies greatly due to optical rotation effect. The variation of light intensity versus variation of temperature curve shows the phase transition temperatures of LCs clearly. The phase transition temperatures of three cholesteric liquid crystals (ChLCs) and a nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) were detected by this method, and compared with those of the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized light microscope (PLM) methods.  相似文献
