Diffusion of penetrants through polymers often does not follow the standard Fickian model. Such anomalous behavior can cause difficulty when designing polymer networks for specific uses. One type of non-Fickian behavior that results is so-called case II diffusion, where Fickian-like fronts initially move like √t with a transition to a non-Fickian concentration profile and front speed for moderate time. A mathematical model is presented that replicates this behavior in thin polymer films, and an analysis is performed that yields relevant dimensionless groups for study. An unusual result is derived: In certain parameter ranges, the concentration profile can change concavity, reflecting Fickian behavior for short times and non-Fickian behavior for moderate times. Asymptotic and numerical results are then obtained to characterize the dependence of such relevant quantities as failure time, front speed, and mass transport on these dimensionless groups. This information can aid in the design of effective polymer protectant films. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Thin polymeric films are increasingly being utilized in diverse technological applications, and it is crucial to have a reliable method to characterize the stability of these films against dewetting. The parameter space that influences the dewetting of thin polymer films is wide (molecular mass, temperature, film thickness, substrate interaction) and a combinatorial method of investigation is suitable. We thus construct a combinatorial library of observations for polystyrene (PS) films cast on substrates having orthogonal temperature and surface energy gradients and perform a series of measurements for a range of molecular masses (1800 g/mol < M < 35 000 g/mol) and film thicknesses h (30 nm < h < 40 nm) to explore these primary parameter axes. We were able to obtain a near-universal scaling curve describing a wetting-dewetting transition line for polystyrene films of fixed thickness by introducing reduced temperature and surface energy variables dependent on M. Our observations also indicate that the apparent polymer surface tension gamma(p) becomes appreciably modified in thin polymer films from its bulk counterpart for films thinner than about 100-200 nm, so that bulk gamma(p) measurements cannot be used to estimate the stability of ultrathin films. Both of these observations are potentially fundamental for the control of thin film stability in applications where film dewetting can compromise film function.  相似文献

An increasing amount of experimental data now supports the idea that the dynamics of thin polymer films is different from bulk. An experimental consensus now supports the previously controversial view that glass transition temperatures of thin polymer films on weakly interacting substrates are reduced from bulk values, but evidence for whether the surface has a higher mobility than the bulk is still contradictory.  相似文献

The process of nonsolvent-induced dewetting of thin polystyrene (PS) films on hydrophilic surfaces at room temperature has been studied by using water as a nonsolvent. It is observed that the process of nonsolvent-induced dewetting is greatly different from other previous dewetting processes. The PS film is found in nonviscous state in our study. A mechanism of nonsolvent-induced dewetting is deduced in an order of penetration, replacement, and coalescent, and it is different from other previous dewetting mechanisms. The results of experiments are analyzed from thermodynamics and dynamics to support the hypothetical mechanism.  相似文献

In this report, we describe a versatile photochemical method for cross-linking polymer films and demonstrate that this method can be used to inhibit thin polymer films from dewetting. A bifunctional photoactive molecule featuring two benzophenone chromophores capable of abstracting hydrogen atoms from various donors, including C-H groups, is mixed into PS films. Upon exposure to UV light, the bis-benzophenone molecule cross-links the chains presumably by hydrogen abstraction followed by radical recombination. Photoinduced cross-linking is characterized by infrared spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. Optical and atomic force microscopy images show that photocrosslinked polystyrene (PS) thin films resist dewetting when heated above the glass transition temperature or exposed to solvent vapor. PS films are inhibited from dewetting on both solid and liquid substrates. The effectiveness of the method to inhibit dewetting is studied as a function of the ratio of cross-linker to macromolecule, duration of exposure to UV light, film thickness, the driving force for dewetting, and the thermodynamic nature of the substrate.  相似文献

The effectiveness of a "solvent annealing" process was investigated for thin (approximately 150 nm) polystyrene films, in which the diffusion and reorganization of polymer chains were mediated by the controlled absorption of cyclohexane vapor. Results were compared with conventional "thermal annealing" of films under vacuum above the glass transition temperature. Elastic recoil detection analysis (ERDA) was used to determine the surface excesses of fluorocarbon end-capped polystyrene (hPSF) and poly(styrene-b-dimethylsiloxane) (hPS-PDMS) in deuterated polystyrene (dPS) films. Both annealing methods enabled diffusion of the surface-active polymers; however, only thermal annealing gave rise to a surface excess in hPSF/dPS films. The inhibition ofhPSF adsorption under solvent annealing was due to the low surface tension of cyclohexane. In contrast, hPS-PDMS, having a larger surface-active group than that of hPSF, was found in excess at the air surface under solvent annealing, and surface excesses were consistent with the formation of saturated monolayers in blended films. The mixing of hPS-PDMS with dPS was inhibited by the unfavorable interaction between the PDMS block of the copolymer and the homopolymer. The slow interdiffusion of hPS-PDMS in dPS is consistent with the formation of micelles, and the formation of an excess layer at the air surface may be kinetically inhibited by the rate of dissociation of hPS-PDMS micelles.  相似文献

Distribution of fluorescent dye molecules in polymer thin (100 nm) films was investigated using far-field single-molecule video microscopy, by varying concentrations of dye molecules mixed in the polymer. Histograms of fluorescence photocounts of individual fluorescent spots showed wide distribution, varying in the number of fluorescent spots composed of one, two, three or group of molecules. The number of the molecules present in the fluorescent spots was also ascertained by fluorescence photobleaching experiments. Photocounts associated with maxima of the histograms were found to be independent of the concentrations; however, the number of occurrences associated with more than one molecule decreased with decreasing concentration. By reducing concentration as well as by mixing dye molecules into a polymer solution, fluorescent spots grouping more than one molecule were separated considerably into fluorescent spots including a single-molecule.  相似文献

Films of polystyrene-poly(vinylmethyl ether) blends of various compositions are formed by a dip-coating procedure, the thickness of the film being controlled by the concentration of the solution. The substrates used are glass and gold. The phase separation process is followed by a laser light scattering experiment in which the total forward scattering intensity is monitored as a function of temperature. Morphological examination shows that phase separation occurs by a spinodal decomposition mechanism. A thickness effect on the phase separation temperature is noticeable when film thickness is smaller than 1 μm. This effect is substrate dependent. In all films formed on gold the spinodal temperature increases as film thickness decreases. Films formed on glass exhibit a destabilizing effect on decreasing film thickness. This effect is slight in films of composition poorer in polystyrene than the critical composition, and is enhanced in films richer in polystyrene. The stabilizing effect of decreasing the thickness of films formed on the gold substrate is considered to reflect mainly a purely geometrical effect. The decreasing dimensionality is shown by simple theoretical considerations to increase the phase-separation temperature. However, the phase separation behavior of thin films on glass appears to be the result of two kinds of substrate-polymer interactions in addition to the geometrical effect: (a) electrostatic interaction of the charged glass surface (a destabilizing effect at all film compositions) and (b) selective adsorption of polystyrene on glass.  相似文献

Thin films of fluids are playing a leading role in countless natural and industrial processes. Here we study the stability and dewetting dynamics of viscoelastic polymer thin films. The dewetting of polystyrene close to the glass transition reveals unexpected features: asymmetric rims collecting the dewetted liquid and logarithmic growth laws that we explain by considering the nonlinear velocity dependence of friction at the fluid/solid interface and by evoking residual stresses within the film. Systematically varying the time so that films were stored below the glass-transition temperature, we studied simultaneously the probability for film rupture and the dewetting dynamics at early stages. Both approaches proved independently the significance of residual stresses arising from the fast solvent evaporation associated with the spin-coating process. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The construction and principle of operation of small-angle light scattering apparatus for studies of supermolecular structure in thin polymer films is described. The apparatus can be used to study changes in spherulite structure during crystallization and changes in films subjected to steady or sinusoidal strain. Typical results with polyethylene films are given.  相似文献

Moisture absorption in model photoresist films of poly(4-hydroxystryene) (PHOSt) and poly(tert-butoxycarboxystyrene) (PBOCSt) supported on silicon wafers was measured by X-ray and neutron reflectivity. The overall thickness change in the films upon moisture exposure was found to be dependent upon the initial film thickness. As the film becomes thinner, the swelling is enhanced. The enhanced swelling in the thin films is due to the attractive nature of the hydrophilic substrate, leading to an accumulation of water at the silicon/polymer interface and subsequently a gradient in concentration from the enhancement at the interface to the bulk concentration. As films become thinner, this interfacial excess dominates the swelling response of the film. This accumulation was confirmed experimentally using neutron reflectivity. The water rich layer extends 25 +/- 10 A into the film with a maximum water concentration of approximately 30 vol %. The excess layer was found to be polymer independent despite the order of magnitude difference in the water solubility in the bulk of the film. To test if the source of the thickness dependent behavior was the enhanced swelling at the interface, a simple, zero adjustable parameter model consisting of a fixed water rich layer at the interface and bulk swelling through the remainder of the film was developed and found to reasonably correspond to the measured thickness dependent swelling.  相似文献

Poly(4-cyano-4î-methacryloyloxyazobenzene) displayed a slow E-to-Z photoisomerization rate and a low Z-isomer content at a photostationary state in a film. Linearly polarized 436 nm light irradiation resulted in the gradual generation of dichroism due to the reorientation of the azobenzene chromophores. The photodichroism was enhanced markedly by heating the film and not deteriorated even at 240 °C. Discussion was made on the thermally enhanced photodichroism of the polymer with p-cyanoazobenzene side chains in respect to its semi-crystallinity.  相似文献

The influence of relative humidity (RH) during the film preparation on the surface morphology and on the material distribution of the resulting technical polymer blend films consisting of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly (vinyl butyral) (PVB) is investigated by atomic force microscopy. Both pure polymers and polymer blends with different compositions of PVB/PMMA dissolved in tetrahydrofuran (THF) were used. Polymer films prepared under dry conditions (RH < 20%) are compared with those that have the same polymer composition but were prepared under increased humidity conditions (RH > 80%). The films consisting of the pure polymers showed a nonporous surface morphology for low‐humidity preparation conditions, whereas high‐humidity preparation conditions lead to porous PVB and PMMA films, respectively. These pores are explained as the result of a breath figure formation. In the case of the polymer blend films containing both polymers, porous or phase‐separated surface structures were observed even at low‐humidity conditions. A superposition of the effects of phase separation and breath figure formation is observed in the case of polymer blend films prepared under high‐humidity conditions. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) images taken before and after the treatment with ethanol as a selective solvent for PVB indicate that PMMA is deposited on top of a PVB layer in the case of the low‐humidity preparation process whereas for high‐humidity conditions the silicon substrate is covered with a PMMA film. The critical properties of polymer solutions confined in thin‐film environments is studied with simple scaling arguments and a molecular theory. For purely repulsive surfaces, the critical volume fraction is a universal function of x = N1/2/L, where N is the chain length and L is the film thickness. The critical volume fraction is nonmonotonic in x and shows a deep minimum at a film thickness several times larger than the chain's radius of gyration. This nonmonotonic behavior results from the interplay between the surface–polymer entropic repulsion and the tendency of the film to avoid large density gradients. The critical temperature is a monotonically increasing function of L, as L goes from the two‐dimensional limit to the three‐dimensional limit. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. High-frequency sinusoidal oscillations of a coarse-grained polymer model are used to calculate the local dynamic mechanical properties (DMPs) of free-standing polymer thin films. The storage modulus G(') and loss modulus G(") are examined as a function of position normal to the free surfaces. It is found that mechanically soft layers arise near the free surfaces of glassy thin films, and that their thickness becomes comparable to the entire film thickness as the temperature approaches the glass transition T(g). As a result, the overall stiffness of glassy thin films decreases with film thickness. It is also shown that two regions coexist in thin films just at the bulk T(g); a melt-like region (G(')G(")) in the middle of the film. Our findings on the existence of a heterogeneous distribution of DMPs in free-standing polymer thin films provide insights into recent experimental measurements of the mechanical properties of glassy polymer thin films.  相似文献

Temperature dependent structural and morphological investigations on semiconducting dioctyl-terthiophene (DOTT) thin films prepared on silica surfaces reveals the coexistence of surface induce order and distinct crystalline/liquid crystalline bulk polymorphs. X-ray diffraction and scanning force microscopy measurements indicate that at room temperature two polymorphs are present: the surface induced phase grows directly on the silica interface and the bulk phase on top. At elevated temperatures the long-range order gradually decreases, and the crystal G (340 K), smectic F (348 K), and smectic C (360 K) phases are observed. Indexation of diffraction peaks reveals that an up-right standing conformation of DOTT molecules is present within all phases. A temperature stable interfacial layer close to the silica-DOTT interface acts as template for the formation of the different phases. Rapid cooling of the DOTT sample from the smectic C phase to room temperature results in freezing into a metastable crystalline state with an intermediated unit cell between the room temperature crystalline phase and the smectic C phase. The understanding of such interfacial induced phases in thin semiconducting liquid crystal films allows tuning of crystallographic and therefore physical properties within organic thin films.  相似文献

The thermal stability of a model system consisting of a polymer film on a Si substrate capped by a thin metal layer has been investigated. When the model system is heated to a sufficiently high temperature characteristic surface wrinkling structures are formed with well defined periodicity over large areas. It is suggested that this wave-like surface morphology is driven by the thermal expansion coefficient mismatch of the different layers. A mechanism based on bending of a thin stiff surface on a thin elastic medium has been adopted to predict the pattern periodicity which gives satisfactory results with the experimental values.  相似文献
