A set‐up for simultaneous imaging and diffraction that yields radiograms with up to 200 frames per second and 5.6 µm effective pixel size is presented. Tomograms and diffractograms are acquired together in 10 s. Two examples illustrate the attractiveness of combining these methods at the EDDI beamline for in situ studies. 相似文献

BioCARS, a NIH‐supported national user facility for macromolecular time‐resolved X‐ray crystallography at the Advanced Photon Source (APS), has recently completed commissioning of an upgraded undulator‐based beamline optimized for single‐shot laser‐pump X‐ray‐probe measurements with time resolution as short as 100 ps. The source consists of two in‐line undulators with periods of 23 and 27 mm that together provide high‐flux pink‐beam capability at 12 keV as well as first‐harmonic coverage from 6.8 to 19 keV. A high‐heat‐load chopper reduces the average power load on downstream components, thereby preserving the surface figure of a Kirkpatrick–Baez mirror system capable of focusing the X‐ray beam to a spot size of 90 µm horizontal by 20 µm vertical. A high‐speed chopper isolates single X‐ray pulses at 1 kHz in both hybrid and 24‐bunch modes of the APS storage ring. In hybrid mode each isolated X‐ray pulse delivers up to ~4 × 1010 photons to the sample, thereby achieving a time‐averaged flux approaching that of fourth‐generation X‐FEL sources. A new high‐power picosecond laser system delivers pulses tunable over the wavelength range 450–2000 nm. These pulses are synchronized to the storage‐ring RF clock with long‐term stability better than 10 ps RMS. Monochromatic experimental capability with Biosafety Level 3 certification has been retained. 相似文献

An understanding of the mechanical response of modern engineering alloys to complex loading conditions is essential for the design of load‐bearing components in high‐performance safety‐critical aerospace applications. A detailed knowledge of how material behaviour is modified by fatigue and the ability to predict failure reliably are vital for enhanced component performance. Unlike macroscopic bulk properties (e.g. stiffness, yield stress, etc.) that depend on the average behaviour of many grains, material failure is governed by `weakest link'‐type mechanisms. It is strongly dependent on the anisotropic single‐crystal elastic–plastic behaviour, local morphology and microstructure, and grain‐to‐grain interactions. For the development and validation of models that capture these complex phenomena, the ability to probe deformation behaviour at the micro‐scale is key. The diffraction of highly penetrating synchrotron X‐rays is well suited to this purpose and micro‐beam Laue diffraction is a particularly powerful tool that has emerged in recent years. Typically it uses photon energies of 5–25 keV, limiting penetration into the material, so that only thin samples or near‐surface regions can be studied. In this paper the development of high‐energy transmission Laue (HETL) micro‐beam X‐ray diffraction is described, extending the micro‐beam Laue technique to significantly higher photon energies (50–150 keV). It allows the probing of thicker sample sections, with the potential for grain‐level characterization of real engineering components. The new HETL technique is used to study the deformation behaviour of individual grains in a large‐grained polycrystalline nickel sample during in situ tensile loading. Refinement of the Laue diffraction patterns yields lattice orientations and qualitative information about elastic strains. After deformation, bands of high lattice misorientation can be identified in the sample. Orientation spread within individual scattering volumes is studied using a pattern‐matching approach. The results highlight the inability of a simple Schmid‐factor model to capture the behaviour of individual grains and illustrate the need for complementary mechanical modelling. 相似文献

A hard X‐ray scanning microscope installed at the Hard X‐ray Nanoprobe beamline of the National Synchrotron Light Source II has been designed, constructed and commissioned. The microscope relies on a compact, high stiffness, low heat dissipation approach and utilizes two types of nanofocusing optics. It is capable of imaging with ~15 nm × 15 nm spatial resolution using multilayer Laue lenses and 25 nm × 26 nm resolution using zone plates. Fluorescence, diffraction, absorption, differential phase contrast, ptychography and tomography are available as experimental techniques. The microscope is also equipped with a temperature regulation system which allows the temperature of a sample to be varied in the range between 90 K and 1000 K. The constructed instrument is open for general users and offers its capabilities to the material science, battery research and bioscience communities. 相似文献

The X‐ray deformable mirror (XDM) is becoming widely used in the present synchrotron/free‐electron laser facilities because of its flexibility in correcting wavefront errors or modification of the beam size at the sample location. Owing to coupling among the N actuators of an XDM, (N + 1) or (2N + 1) scans are required to learn the response of each actuator one by one. When the mirror has an important number of actuators (N) and the actuator response time including stabilization or the necessary metrology time is long, the learning process can be time consuming. In this work, a fast and accurate method is presented to drive an XDM to a target shape usually with only three or four measurements during inspection. The metrology data are used as feedback to calculate the curvature discrepancy between the current and the target shapes. Three different derivative estimation methods are introduced to calculate the curvature from measured data. The mirror shape is becoming close to the target through iterative compensations. The feasibility of this simple and effective approach is demonstrated by a series of experiments. 相似文献

An X‐ray dynamical diffraction Fraunhofer holographic scheme is proposed. Theoretically it is shown that the reconstruction of the object image by visible light is possible. The spatial and temporal coherence requirements of the incident X‐ray beam are considered. As an example, the hologram recording as well as the reconstruction by visible light of an absolutely absorbing wire are discussed. 相似文献

The coupling and propagation of electromagnetic waves through planar X‐ray waveguides (WG) with vacuum gap and Si claddings are analyzed in detail, starting from the source and ending at the detector. The general case of linearly tapered WGs (i.e. with the entrance aperture different from the exit one) is considered. Different kinds of sources, i.e. synchrotron radiation and laboratory desk‐top sources, have been considered, with the former providing a fully coherent incoming beam and the latter partially coherent beams. It is demonstrated that useful information about the parameters of the WG can be derived, comparing experimental results with computer simulation based on analytical solutions of the Helmholtz equation which take into account the amplitude and phase matching between the standing waves created in front of the WG, and the resonance modes propagating into the WG. 相似文献

Owing to its extreme sensitivity, quantitative mapping of elemental distributions via X‐ray fluorescence microscopy (XFM) has become a key microanalytical technique. The recent realisation of scanning X‐ray diffraction microscopy (SXDM) meanwhile provides an avenue for quantitative super‐resolved ultra‐structural visualization. The similarity of their experimental geometries indicates excellent prospects for simultaneous acquisition. Here, in both step‐ and fly‐scanning modes, robust, simultaneous XFM‐SXDM is demonstrated. 相似文献

A method is presented to simplify Bragg coherent X‐ray diffraction imaging studies of complex heterogeneous crystalline materials with a two‐stage screening/imaging process that utilizes polychromatic and monochromatic coherent X‐rays and is compatible with in situ sample environments. Coherent white‐beam diffraction is used to identify an individual crystal particle or grain that displays desired properties within a larger population. A three‐dimensional reciprocal‐space map suitable for diffraction imaging is then measured for the Bragg peak of interest using a monochromatic beam energy scan that requires no sample motion, thus simplifying in situ chamber design. This approach was demonstrated with Au nanoparticles and will enable, for example, individual grains in a polycrystalline material of specific orientation to be selected, then imaged in three dimensions while under load. 相似文献

An X‐ray one‐dimensionally focusing system, a refracting–diffracting lens (RDL), composed of Bragg double‐asymmetric‐reflecting two‐crystal plane parallel plates and a double‐concave cylindrical parabolic lens placed in the gap between the plates is described. It is shown that the focal length of the RDL is equal to the focal distance of the separate lens multiplied by the square of the asymmetry factor. One can obtain RDLs with different focal lengths for certain applications. Using the point‐source function of dynamic diffraction, as well as the Green function in a vacuum with parabolic approximation, an expression for the double‐diffracted beam amplitude for an arbitrary incident wave is presented. Focusing of the plane incident wave and imaging of a point source are studied. The cases of non‐absorptive and absorptive lenses are discussed. The intensity distribution in the focusing plane and on the focusing line, and its dependence on wavelength, deviation from the Bragg angle and magnification is studied. Geometrical optical considerations are also given. RDLs can be applied to focus radiation from both laboratory and synchrotron X‐ray sources, for X‐ray imaging of objects, and for obtaining high‐intensity beams. RDLs can also be applied in X‐ray astronomy. 相似文献

Inelastic X‐ray scattering instruments in operation at third‐generation synchrotron radiation facilities are based on backreflections from perfect silicon crystals. This concept reaches back to the very beginnings of high‐energy‐resolution X‐ray spectroscopy and has several advantages but also some inherent drawbacks. In this paper an alternate path is investigated using a different concept, the `M4 instrument'. It consists of a combination of two in‐line high‐resolution monochromators, focusing mirrors and collimating mirrors. Design choices and performance estimates in comparison with existing conventional inelastic X‐ray scattering instruments are presented. 相似文献

Using the scanning transmission X‐ray microscope at BESSY II, colloidal structures from a Chernozem soil have been studied with a spatial resolution around 60 nm and a spectral resolution of 1700 at the K‐absorption edge of carbon. Elemental mapping has been used to determine the distribution of organic matter within the colloidal structures. Spectra have been extracted from image stacks to obtain information about the chemical state. For the analysis of the latter, principal component analysis and cluster analysis have been applied. It was possible, for example, to discriminate clay particles against organic components. 相似文献

Optical performance of materials for X‐ray refractive optics in the energy range 8–100 keV 下载免费PDF全文

A quantitative analysis of the crucial characteristics of currently used and promising materials for X‐ray refractive optics is performed in the extended energy range 8–100 keV. According to the examined parameters, beryllium is the material of choice for X‐ray compound refractive lenses (CRLs) in the energy range 8–25 keV. At higher energies the use of CRLs made of diamond and the cubic phase of boron nitride (c‐BN) is beneficial. It was demonstrated that the presence of the elements of the fourth (or higher) period has a fatal effect on the functional X‐ray properties even if low‐Z elements dominate in the compound, like in YB66. Macroscopic properties are discussed: much higher melting points and thermal conductivities of C and c‐BN enable them to be used at the new generation of synchrotron radiation sources and X‐ray free‐electron lasers. The role of crystal and internal structure is discussed: materials with high density are preferable for refractive applications while less dense phases are suitable for X‐ray windows. Single‐crystal or amorphous glass‐like materials based on Li, Be, B or C that are free of diffuse scattering from grain boundaries, voids and inclusions are the best candidates for applications of highly coherent X‐ray beams. 相似文献

The properties of X‐ray vacuum‐gap waveguides (WGs) with additional periodic structure on one of the reflecting walls are studied. Theoretical considerations, numerical simulations and experimental results confirm that the periodic structure imposes additional conditions on efficient propagation of the electromagnetic field along the WGs. The transmission is maximum for guided modes that possess sufficient phase synchronism with the periodic structure (here called `super‐resonances'). The field inside the WGs is essentially given at low incidence angle by the fundamental mode strongly coupled with the corresponding phased‐matched mode. Both the simulated and the experimental diffraction patterns show in the far field that propagation takes place essentially only for low incidence angles, confirming the mode filtering properties of the structured X‐ray waveguides. 相似文献

The X‐ray Powder Diffraction (XPD) beamline at the National Synchrotron Light Source II is a multi‐purpose high‐energy X‐ray diffraction beamline with high throughput and high resolution. The beamline uses a sagittally bent double‐Laue crystal monochromator to provide X‐rays over a large energy range (30–70 keV). In this paper the optical design and the calculated performance of the XPD beamline are presented. The damping wiggler source is simulated by the SRW code and a filter system is designed to optimize the photon flux as well as to reduce the heat load on the first optics. The final beamline performance under two operation modes is simulated using the SHADOW program. For the first time a multi‐lamellar model is introduced and implemented in the ray tracing of the bent Laue crystal monochromator. The optimization and the optical properties of the vertical focusing mirror are also discussed. Finally, the instrumental resolution function of the XPD beamline is described in an analytical method. 相似文献

An X‐ray Raman spectrometer for EXAFS studies on minerals: bent Laue spectrometer with 20 keV X‐rays
N. Hiraoka H. Fukui H. Tanida H. Toyokawa Y. Q. Cai K. D. Tsuei 《Journal of synchrotron radiation》2013,20(2):266-271
An X‐ray Raman spectrometer for studies of local structures in minerals is discussed. Contrary to widely adopted back‐scattering spectrometers using ≤10 keV X‐rays, a spectrometer utilizing ~20 keV X‐rays and a bent Laue analyzer is proposed. The 20 keV photons penetrate mineral samples much more deeply than 10 keV photons, so that high intensity is obtained owing to an enhancement of the scattering volume. Furthermore, a bent Laue analyzer provides a wide band‐pass and a high reflectivity, leading to a much enhanced integrated intensity. A prototype spectrometer has been constructed and performance tests carried out. The oxygen K‐edge in SiO2 glass and crystal (α‐quartz) has been measured with energy resolutions of 4 eV (EXAFS mode) and 1.3 eV (XANES mode). Unlike methods previously adopted, it is proposed to determine the pre‐edge curve based on a theoretical Compton profile and a Monte Carlo multiple‐scattering simulation before extracting EXAFS features. It is shown that the obtained EXAFS features are reproduced fairly well by a cluster model with a minimal set of fitting parameters. The spectrometer and the data processing proposed here are readily applicable to high‐pressure studies. 相似文献

The X‐ray lens, which is composed of opposing canted saw‐tooth structures, originally assembled from cut‐out pieces from long‐playing records, is understood by recognizing that an incident plane X‐ray wave will traverse a varying number of triangular prisms in them. The refraction will deflect any beam towards the prism tips and the variation of the deflection angle, which grows linearly with the number of traversed prisms, can result in X‐ray focusing. The structure offers focusing flexibility by simply changing the taper angle. This report will discuss the aberrations arising in the saw‐tooth structure in its simplest form with identical prisms. It is found that the saw‐tooth structures in low‐Z materials with focal length below 1 m provide less flux density in the focal spot than stacks of one‐dimensionally focusing refractive lenses with identical transmission function. This is due to excessive aberrations in the regular structure, which are absent in stacks of concave lenses, and which limit the focusing to spot sizes of just submicrometre dimensions, as measured experimentally for some lenses. It will be shown that this limitation can be overcome by appropriately modifying the prism shape. Then the image size could be reduced by about an order of magnitude to the diffraction limit with competitive numbers even below 0.1 µm. Microfabrication techniques are identified as the appropriate means for producing the structures. 相似文献

Single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction and resonant X‐ray magnetic scattering at helium‐3 temperatures in high magnetic fields at beamline P09 at PETRA III 下载免费PDF全文
S. Francoual J. Strempfer J. Warren Y. Liu A. Skaugen S. Poli J. Blume F. Wolff‐Fabris P. C. Canfield T. Lograsso 《Journal of synchrotron radiation》2015,22(5):1207-1214
The resonant scattering and diffraction beamline P09 at PETRA III at DESY is equipped with a 14 T vertical field split‐pair magnet. A helium‐3 refrigerator is available that can be fitted inside the magnet's variable‐temperature insert. Here the results of a series of experiments aimed at determining the beam conditions permitting operations with the He‐3 insert are presented. By measuring the tetragonal‐to‐orthorhombic phase transition occurring at 2.1 K in the Jahn–Teller compound TmVO4, it is found that the photon flux at P09 must be attenuated down to 1.5 × 109 photons s?1 for the sample to remain at temperatures below 800 mK. Despite such a reduction of the incident flux and the subsequent use of a Cu(111) analyzer, the resonant X‐ray magnetic scattering signal at the Tm LIII absorption edge associated with the spin‐density wave in TmNi2B2C below 1.5 K is intense enough to permit a complete study in magnetic field and at sub‐Kelvin temperatures to be carried out. 相似文献
