Ytterbium and lanthanum triflates were used as initiators to cure mixtures of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and 6,6‐dimethyl‐(4,8‐dioxaspiro[2.5]octane‐5,7‐dione) in several proportions. The evolution of the epoxy and 6,6‐dimethyl‐(4,8‐dioxaspiro[2.5]octane‐5,7‐dione) bands during curing and the linear ester groups in the final materials were evaluated with Fourier transform infrared in the attenuated‐total‐reflection mode. The use of a conventional cationic initiator, boron trifluoride monoethylamine, was also studied to test the advantages of lanthanide triflates. The shrinkage after curing and the thermal degradability of the materials with variations in the comonomer ratio and the initiator were evaluated and related to the chemical structure of the final network. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two flame‐retardant epoxy curing agents, 9,10‐dihydro‐9‐oxa‐10‐phosphaphenanthrene‐10‐yl‐tris(4‐hydroxyphenyl)methane (1) and 9,10‐dihydro‐9‐oxa‐10‐phosphaphenanthrene‐10‐yl‐ (4‐aminophenyl)‐bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)methane (2), were prepared by a facile, economic, one‐pot procedure. The structures of the curing agents were confirmed by IR, high‐resolution mass, 1‐D, and 2‐D NMR spectra. A reaction mechanism was proposed for the preparation, and the effect of electron withdrawing/donating effects on the stabilization of the carbocation was discussed. (1‐2) served as curing agents for diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA), dicyclopentadiene epoxy (HP‐7200), and cresol novolac epoxy (CNE). Properties such as glass transition temperature, coefficient of thermal expansion, thermal decomposition temperature, and flame retardancy of the resulting epoxy thermosets were evaluated. The resulting epoxy thermosets show high Tg, low thermal expansion, moderate thermostability, and excellent flame retardancy. The bulky biphenylene phosphinate pendant makes polymer chains difficult to rotate, explaining the high Tg and low thermal expansion characteristic. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel liquid‐crystalline epoxy resin combining biphenyl and aromatic ester‐type mesogenic units, diglycidyl ether of 4,4′‐bis(4‐hydroxybenzoyloxy)‐3,3′,5,5′‐tetramethyl biphenyl, was synthesized. Its spectroscopic structure, thermal properties, and phase structures were investigated with NMR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and polarized light microscopy (PLM), respectively. The curing agent, diaminodiphenylsulfone, was chosen to investigate the curing behavior by means of DSC and PLM during isothermal and nonisothermal processes. Only one exothermal peak appeared in the isothermal DSC curves. Birefringence was also observed during the curing processes and preserved after postcuring. Compared with short rigid‐rod and flexible epoxies, the cured liquid‐crystalline epoxy resin that was obtained displayed special thermal stability according to thermogravimetric analysis because of its long rigid‐rod mesogenic unit and bulky methyl groups. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Ytterbium and lanthanum triflates were used as catalysts to cure diglycidylether of bisphenol A with different proportions of 1,3‐dioxan‐2‐one. The curing was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transform infrared in the attenuated‐total‐reflection mode (FTIR/ATR). FTIR/ATR was used to monitor the competitive reactive processes and to quantify the evolution of the groups involved in the curing process. We observed the formation of a five‐membered cyclic carbonate that remains unreacted at the chain ends, because of an equilibrium process between the spiroorthocarbonates that had formed as intermediate species. The kinetics were studied by DSC experiments and analyzed with isoconversional procedures. The system catalyzed by ytterbium triflate had a higher curing rate. Thermogravimetric analysis and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis experiments were used to evaluate the properties of the materials obtained. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Short length vapor‐grown carbon nanofibers (VGCNFs) were functionalized with 4‐aminobenzoic acid in polyphosphoric acid/phosphorous phentoxide medium via “direct” Friedel‐Crafts acylation reaction to afford aminobenzoyl‐functionalized VGCNFs (AF‐VGCNFs). The AF‐VGCNFs as a cocuring agent were mixed with epoxy resin by simple mechanical stirring in methanol which was added to help efficient mixing. After evaporation of methanol, 4,4′‐methylenedianiline as a curing agent was added to the mixture, which was then cured at elevated temperatures. The resultant composites displayed uniform dispersion of AF‐VGCNFs into cured epoxy matrix. During curing process, the amine functionalities on AF‐VGCNF together with 4,4′‐methylenedianiline were expected to be involved in covalent attachment to the epoxy resin. As a result, both tensile modulus and strength of the composites were improved when compared with those of pure epoxy resin. Thus, the AF‐VGCNFs play a role as an outstanding functional additive, which could resolve both dispersion and interfacial adhesion issues at the same time by functionalization of VGCNFs and covalent bonding between the additive and matrix, respectively. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new epoxy resin derived from Meldrum acid (DGMA) was synthesized by a two steps synthetic procedure and structurally characterized by the usual spectroscopic techniques and elemental analysis. Ytterbium and lanthanum triflates were tested as cationic initiators to cure this resin and its mixtures with diglycidylether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) in several proportions. By FTIR‐ATR spectroscopy the evolution of the groups, which participate in the curing was followed. The evolution of the curing and the Tg of the materials were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and the kinetic parameters were calculated applying isoconversional procedures. Ytterbium triflate led to a quicker curing than lanthanum. The thermal stability of the materials obtained was evaluated by thermogravimetry and the higher thermal degradability of the materials containing DGMA was confirmed. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Phosphorus‐containing epoxy systems were prepared from isobutylbis(hydroxypropyl)phosphine oxide (IHPO) and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA). Diethyl‐N,N‐bis(2‐hydroxyethyl) aminomethyl phosphonate (Fyrol 6) could not be incorporated into the epoxy backbone by a reaction with either epichlorohydrin or DGEBA because intramolecular cyclization took place. The curing behavior of the IHPO–DGEBA prepolymer with two primary amines was studied, and materials with moderate glass‐transition temperatures were obtained. V‐0 materials were obtained when the resins were tested for ignition resistance with the UL‐94 test. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 3510–3515, 2005  相似文献

A new hyperbranched‐linear‐hyperbranched polymer was prepared in a one pot process by reaction of 4,4‐bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)valeric acid and poly(ethylene glycol) (HPH). After characterization by 1H and 13C NMR, SEC, DSC, and TGA, this polymer was used, in proportions of 5, 10, and 15 phr, as a chemical modifier in the UV and thermal cationic curing of 3,4‐epoxycyclohexylmethyl‐3′,4′‐epoxycyclohexyl carboxylate epoxy resin. The curing process was studied by calorimetry, demonstrating the accelerating effect of the hydroxyl groups present in HPH's structure. The morphology of the resulting thermosets depended on the curing system used, as demonstrated by FE‐SEM microscopy, but in both cases phase separation occurred. Thermosets obtained by thermal curing presented lower thermal stability than UV‐cured materials. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

To be used as templates for nanostructured thermosets, a commercial poly(styrene‐b‐isoprene‐b‐styrene) (SIS) block copolymer (BCP) was epoxidized by three different epoxidation procedures. An exhaustive analysis of methodologies using metal catalyzed/hydrogen peroxide, dimethyldioxirane (DMDO), and meta‐chloroperbenzoic acid (m‐CPBA) was performed to obtain reactive BCPs. The DMDO approach was the best strategy to obtain highly epoxidized SIS BCP (85 mol %) without formation of side products. Careful control in BCP epoxidation by metal catalyzed/hydrogen peroxide and m‐CPBA approaches led to a maximum epoxidation degree (ED) of approximately 60 mol % without the formation of side products. The ED by metal catalyzed/hydrogen peroxide strategy could be further increased to 69 mol %, but a significant amount of crosslinking, ring opening, and polymer chain scission reactions were detected by spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques. The miscibility of epoxidized BCPs with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol‐A epoxy system before and after curing was analyzed to develop nanostructured epoxy thermosets. For ED higher than 69 mol %, BCPs were miscible, while those with lower ED presented macrophase separation. Highly epoxidized BCPs obtained by the DMDO methodology were successfully used to obtain ordered nanodomains inside the epoxy matrix, as determined by atomic force microscopy. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Epoxy resins are important thermosetting resins widely employed in industrial fields. Although the epoxy–imidazole curing system has attracted attention because of its reactivity, solidification of a liquid epoxy resin containing imidazoles proceeds gradually even at room temperature. This makes it difficult to use them for one‐component epoxy resin materials. Though powder‐type latent curing agents have been used for one‐component epoxy resin materials, they are difficult to apply for fabrication of fine industrial products due to their poor miscibility. To overcome this situation and to improve the shelf life of epoxy–imidazole compositions, we have developed a liquid‐type thermal latent curing agent 1 , generating an imidazole with a thermal trigger via a retro‐Michael addition reaction. The latent curing agent 1 has superior miscibility toward epoxy resins; in addition, it was confirmed that the epoxy resin composition has both high reactivity at 150 °C, and long‐term storage stability at room temperature. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Salen‐zinc complexes (Zn/ 1 R ) thermal‐latently catalyzed the polyaddition of a diepoxide ( 2 ) with a difunctional hemiacetal ester ( 3 ), which proceeded at moderate temperatures (100–150 °C) for curing of mixtures containing monomers and initiators. The catalytic activities of Zn/ 1 R depended on the Lewis acidities of the complexes controlled by the electronic character of the salen ligands. For example, Zn/ 1 3,5‐Cl bearing four electron‐withdrawing chlorine atoms initiated the polyaddition at the lowest temperature (100 °C), and Zn/ 1 OMe bearing two electron‐donating methoxy groups initiated the polyaddition at 120 °C. The Lewis acidities of the complexes were evaluated by NMR and IR spectroscopies and computational calculation. The polyadditions with the salen‐zinc complexes proceeded quantitatively at 150 °C, and the use of a tri‐functional hemiacetal ester ( 7 ) with 2 afforded the corresponding networked polymer. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We synthesized a novel phosphorus‐containing triamine [9,10‐dihydro‐9‐oxa‐10‐phosphaphenanthrene 10‐yl‐tris(4‐aminophenyl) methane (dopo‐ta)] from the nucleophilic addition of 9,10‐dihydro‐9‐oxa‐10‐phosphaphenanthrene 10‐oxide and pararosaniline chloride, using triethylamine as an acid receiver. We confirmed the structure of dopo‐ta by IR, mass, and NMR spectra and elemental analysis. dopo‐ta served as a curing agent for diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and dicyclopentadiene epoxy (hp7200). Properties such as the glass‐transition temperature (Tg), thermal decomposition temperature, flame retardancy, moisture absorption, and dielectric properties of the cured epoxy resins were evaluated. The Tg's of cured DGEBA/dopo‐ta and hp7200/dopo‐ta were 171 and 190 °C, respectively. This high Tg phenomenon is rarely seen in the literature after the introduction of a flame‐retardant element. The flame retardancy increased with the phosphorus content, and a UL‐94 V‐0 grade was achieved with a phosphorus content of 1.80 wt % for DGEBA/dopo‐ta/diamino diphenylmethane (DDM) systems and 1.46 wt % for hp7200/dopo‐ta/DDM systems. The dielectric constants for DGEBA/dopo‐ta and hp7200/dopo‐ta were 2.91 and 2.82, respectively, implying that the dopo‐ta curing systems exhibited low dielectric properties. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new class of thermosetting poly(2,6‐dimethyl‐1,4‐phenylene oxide)s containing pendant epoxide groups were synthesized and characterized. These new epoxy polymers were prepared through the bromination of poly(2,6‐dimethyl‐1,4‐phenylene oxide) in halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons followed by a Wittig reaction to yield vinyl‐substituted polymer derivatives. The treatment of the vinyl‐substituted polymers with m‐chloroperbenzoic acid led to the formation of epoxidized poly(2,6‐dimethyl‐1,4‐phenylene oxide) with variable pendant ratios, and the structures and properties were studied with nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and gel permeation chromatography. The ratios of pendant functional groups were tailored for the polymer properties, and the results showed that the glass‐transition temperatures increased as the benzylic protons were replaced by bromo‐, vinyl‐, or epoxide‐functional groups, whereas the thermal stability decreased in comparison with the original polymer. Within a molar fraction of 20–50%, the degree of functionalization had little effect on the glass‐transition temperature; however, it correlated inversely with the thermal stability of each functionalized polymer. The thermal curing behavior of the epoxide‐functionalized polymer was enhanced by the increment of the pendant functionality, which resulted in a significant increase in the glass‐transition temperature as well as the thermal stability after the curing reaction. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The curing kinetics of a novel liquid crystalline epoxy resin with combining biphenyl and aromatic ester‐type mesogenic unit, diglycidyl ether of 4,4′‐bis(4‐hydroxybenzoyloxy)‐3,3′,5,5′‐tetramethyl biphenyl (DGE‐BHBTMBP), and the curing agent diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS) was studied using the advanced isoconvensional method (AICM). DGE‐BHBTMBP/DDS curing system was investigated the curing behavior by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) during isothermal and nonisothermal processes. Only one exothermal peak appeared in isothermal DSC curves. A variation of the effective activation energy with the extent of conversion was obtained by AICM. Three different curing stages were confirmed. In the initial curing stage, the value of Ea is dramatically decreased from ~90 to ~20 kJ/mol in the conversion region 0–0.2 for the formation of LC phase. In the middle stage, the value of Ea keeps about ~80 kJ/mol for cooperative effect of reaction mechanism and diffusion control. In the final stage, a significant increase of Ea from 84 to 136 kJ/mol could be caused by the mobility of longer polymer chains. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A propargyl ether‐containing benzoxazine (4) was prepared from a potassium carbonate‐catalyzed nucleophilic substitution of propargyl bromide and a phenolic OH‐containing benzoxazine (3) , which was prepared from 1‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)‐1‐(4‐aminophenyl)‐1‐(6‐oxido‐6H ‐dibenz <c,e><1,2> oxaphosphorin‐6‐yl)ethane (1) by a three‐step procedure. The curing reactions of (4) were monitored by IR and DSC. A reaction mechanism was proposed based on the observation. Benzoxazines (3) and (4) were applied as epoxy curing agents. The microstructure and the structure‐property relationship of the resulting thermosets are discussed. The double‐strand structure in (4) ‐cured epoxy thermosets afforded higher crosslinking density, and led to higher thermal properties. In addition, the (4) ‐cured epoxy thermosets possess half the amount of highly polar hydroxyl groups than those of the (3) ‐cured epoxy thermosets, resulting in a lower dielectric constant, dissipation factor, and water absorption. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel triglyceride containing α,β‐unsaturated ketone was prepared through photoperoxidation from high oleic sunflower oil by two steps one pot environmentally friendly procedure. This new enone‐containing triglyceride was crosslinked with diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) via aza‐Michael addition. A kinetic study of the reaction of p‐toluidine with either enone‐containing methyl oleate or epoxidized methyl oleate, as model compounds, allowed us to establish the higher reactivity of the former, thus confirming this curing system as an alternative to amine‐cured epoxidized vegetable oils. The thermal properties of thermosets from enone‐ and epoxy‐containing triglycerides with DDM have been evaluated. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new diepoxide and a new diamine, both bearing bis‐(9,10‐dihydro‐9‐oxa‐10‐oxide‐10‐phosphaphenanthrene‐10‐yl‐)‐substituted methylene linkages, were prepared through the reaction of 9,10‐dihydro‐oxa‐10‐phosphaphenanthrene‐10‐oxide with benzophenone derivatives via a simple addition reaction followed by a dehydration reaction. These two compounds were used as monomers for preparing cured epoxy resins with high phosphorus contents. The resultant epoxy resins showed high glass‐transition temperatures (between 131 and 196 °C). All of the cured epoxy resins exhibited high thermal stability, with 5% weight loss temperatures over 316 °C, and excellent flame retardancy, with limited oxygen index values of 37–50. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The synthesis of statistical copolymers consisting of 2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline (EtOx) and 2‐“soy alkyl”‐2‐oxazoline (SoyOx) via a microwave‐assisted cationic ring‐opening polymerization procedure is described. The majority of the resulting copolymers revealed polydispersity indices below 1.30. The reactivity ratios (rEtOx 1.4 ± 0.3; rSoyOx = 1.7 ± 0.3) revealed a clustered monomer distribution throughout the polymer chains. The thermal and surface properties of the pEtOx‐stat‐SoyOx copolymers were analyzed before and after UV‐curing demonstrating the decreased chain mobility after cross‐linking. In addition, the cross‐linked materials showed shape‐persistent swelling upon absorption of water from the air, whereby as little as 5 mol % SoyOx was found to provide efficient cross‐linking. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Mixtures of the diglycidylether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and phthalide (PT) or 3,3′‐diphthalide (DPT) were cured using ytterbium or lanthanum triflate as catalyst. The curing was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transform infrared in attenuated‐total‐reflection mode (FTIR/ATR). FTIR/ATR was used to monitor the competitive reactive processes and quantify the evolution of the epoxide and lactone groups. The Tg of the crosslinked materials increased when the proportion of lactone in the curing mixture decreased. The kinetics was studied with DSC experiments and isoconversional procedures. The differences in the reactivity of the systems were related to the Lewis acidity of the lanthanide salt used as initiator. The increase in the proportion of lactone leads to an increase in the reaction rate. The shrinkage was determined from the densities before and after curing and its evolution was studied by thermomechanical analysis. The materials obtained were characterized by thermogravimetry and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 1711–1721, 2006  相似文献
