We report on the one‐pot synthesis of well‐defined ABC miktoarm star terpolymers consisting of poly(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate), poly(ε‐caprolactone), and polystyrene or poly(ethylene oxide) arms, PS(‐b‐PCL)‐b‐PDMA and PEO (‐b‐PCL)‐b‐PDMA, taking advantage of the compatibility and mutual tolerability of reaction conditions (catalysts and monomers) employed for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), ring‐opening polymerization (ROP), and click reactions. At first, a novel trifunctional core molecule bearing alkynyl, hydroxyl group, and bromine moieties, alkynyl(? OH)? Br, was synthesized via the esterification reaction of 5‐ethyl‐5‐hydroxymethyl‐2,2‐dimethyl‐1,3‐dioxane with 4‐oxo‐4‐(prop‐2‐ynyloxy)butanoic acid, followed by deprotection and monoesterification of alkynyl(? OH)2 with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide. In the presence of trifunctional core molecule, alkynyl(? OH)? Br, and CuBr/PMDETA/Sn(Oct)2 catalytic mixtures, target ABC miktoarm star terpolymers, PS(‐b‐PCL)‐b‐PDMA and PEO(‐b‐PCL)‐b‐PDMA, were successfully synthesized in a one‐pot manner by simultaneously conducting the ATRP of 2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMA), ROP of ε‐caprolactone (ε‐CL), and the click reaction with azido‐terminated PS (PS‐N3) or azido‐terminated PEO (PEO‐N3). Considering the excellent tolerability of ATRP to a variety of monomers and the fast expansion of click chemistry in the design and synthesis of polymeric and biorelated materials, it is quite anticipated that the one‐pot concept can be applied to the preparation of well‐defined polymeric materials with more complex chain architectures. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We describe here the first example of the synthesis of 4‐arm star poly(acrylic acid) for use as a water‐soluble drag reducing agent, by applying Cu(0)‐mediated polymerization technique. High molecular weight 4‐arm star poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (Mn = 3.0–9.0 × 105 g mol?1) was first synthesized using 4,4′‐oxybis(3,3‐bis(2‐bromopropionate)butane as an initiator and a simple Cu(0)/TREN catalyst system. Then, 4‐arm star poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) were subjected to hydrolysis using trifluoroacetic acid resulting in water‐soluble 4‐arm star poly(acrylic acid). Drag reduction test rig analysis showed 4‐arm star poly(acrylic acid) to be effective as a drag reducing agent with drag reduction of 24.3%. Moreover, 4‐arm star poly(acrylic acid) exhibited superior mechanical stability when compared with a linear poly(acrylic acid) and commercially available drag reducing polymers; Praestol and poly(ethylene oxide). The linear poly(acrylic acid), Praestol, and poly(ethylene oxide) all showed a large decrease in drag reduction of 8–12% when cycled 30 times through the drag reduction test rig while, in contrast, 4‐arm star poly(acrylic acid) demonstrated much higher mechanical stability. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) represents a robust and versatile method for the rapid synthesis of macromolecules with defined architecture. The present article describes the polymerization of methyl methacrylate by SET‐LRP in protic solvent mixtures. Herein, the polymerization process was catalyzed by a straightforward Cu(0)wire/Me6‐TREN catalyst while initiation was obtained by toluenesulfonyl chloride. All experiments were conducted at 50 °C and the living polymerization was demonstrated by kinetic evaluation of the SET‐LRP. The process follows first order kinetic until all monomer is consumed which was typically achieved within 4 h. The molecular weight increased linearly with conversion and the molecular weight distributions were very narrow with Mw/Mn ~ 1.1. Detailed investigations of the polymer samples by MALDI‐TOF confirmed that no termination took place and that the chain end functionality is retained throughout the polymerization process. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The Cu0‐mediated single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization of acrylamide and N,N‐dimethyl‐N‐methacryloyloxyethyl‐N‐sulfobutyl ammonium in aqueous at 25 °C using 2‐chloropropionamide as initiator with Cu0 powder/tris‐(2‐dimethylamino ethyl)amine (Me6‐TREN) as catalyst system is studied. The results showed the characteristic of the “living” polymerization that were the Mn of polymers increased linearly with monomer conversion and the ln([M]0/[M]) increased linearly with time too, meanwhile the narrow molecular of weight distributions were found at most cases. Because of the high rate constant of propagation and bimolecular termination of the acrylamide, the external addition of CuCl2 is required to mediate deactivation the early stage of polymerization. In addition, the disproportionation constant of CuIX/L in H2O is higher than in other solvents and the coordination of amino group and CuII takes place easily, so the isopropanol or N,N‐dimethylformamide is added to control the polymerization. High conversions were achieved within short time and the polymers prepared showed good antipolyelectrolyte properties in inorganic salts solutions. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cellulose produced from cotton fibers was used as substrate for synthesis of oil‐absorbing materials by single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization. The cellulose macroinitiator was prepared by esterification of hydroxyl group with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide (BiBB), followed by grafting with butyl methacrylate (BMA) and pentaerythritol triacrylate (PETA) to render a three‐dimensional architecture. The polymerization was catalyzed by Cu(0) powder/hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) and performed in N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF). Effects of cellulose, catalyst, reaction temperature, and time were investigated in detail. The maximum oil absorption to chloroform and toluene could reach 29.0 and 15.4 g·g?1, respectively. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2013  相似文献

The new SET‐LRP (using Cu(0) powder for organic synthesis) was successfully used to produce well‐defined linear and star homo‐ and diblock‐copolymers of PMA, PSA, and P(MA‐b‐GA)n (where n = 1 or 4). The kinetic data showed that all SET‐LRP were first order and reached high conversions in a short period of time. The other advantage of using such a system is that the copper can easily be removed through filtration, allowing the production of highly pure polymer. The molecular weight distributions were well controlled with polydispersity indexes below 1.1 and the number‐average molecular weight close to theory, especially upon the addition of Cu(II)Br2/Me6‐TREN complex. The linear and star block copolymers were then hydrolyzed to produce the biocompatible amphiphilic P(MA‐b‐GA)n, where the glycerol side‐groups make the outer block hydrophilic. These blocks were micellized into water and found to have a Rg/RH equal to 0.8 and 1.59 for the liner and star blocks, respectively. This together with the TEM's supported that the linear blocks formed the classical core‐shell micelles, where as, the star blocks formed vesicles. We found direct support for the vesicle structure from a TEM where one vesicle squashed a second vesicle consistent with a hollow structure. Such vesicle structures have potential applications as delivery nanoscaled devices for drugs and other important biomolecules. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Isobornyl methacrylate (IBMA), a bulky hydrophobic methacrylate, undergoes very fast polymerization, in bulk, with Cu(I)Br/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA)/ethyl‐2‐bromoisobutyrate system, at ambient temperature. IBMA also undergoes a spontaneous initiator‐free polymerization, at ambient temperature, with Cu(I)Br/PMDETA catalytic system in dimethyl sulfoxide–water mixtures. The rate of the polymerization is seen to increase with the water content up to 80 mol % of water. A possible intervention of air in initiation is proposed. The active Cu(0) formed by the disproportionation of Cu(I) species in aqueous medium probably plays a vital role for a possible air‐initiation of IBMA via single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) mechanism. A high tolerance level to water under SET‐LRP conditions is demonstrated. The poly(IBMA) samples obtained exhibit low molecular weight distributions (1.1–1.3). Similar behavior was not observed with other common methacrylates such as methyl methacrylate, t‐butyl methacrylate, cyclohexyl methacrylate, and benzyl methacrylate. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Regioregular poly(3‐hexyl thiophene) (rr‐P3HT)‐based star polymers were synthesized by a crosslinking reaction of the linear rr‐P3HT macroinitiator and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) crosslinker through Ru‐based atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), where the rr‐P3HT macroinitiator was prepared by Grignard metathesis method (GRIM) followed by end functionalization of the ATRP initiator with chlorophenylacetate (CPA) to the rr‐P3HT. Relatively high molecular weight of the star polymers were obtained (Mp = 8,988,000 g/mol), which consisted of large numbers of the rr‐P3HT arm chains radiating from the EGDMA‐based microgel core. The yield of the star polymers were strongly affected by the added amount of the EGDMA crosslinker. The crystalline structure of the rr‐P3HT by intermolecular π‐π stacking interaction gradually decreased as the star polymer formed, which was confirmed by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and electro‐optical analyses. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Samarium powder was applied as a catalyst for single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) of acrylonitrile (AN) in 1,1,1,3,3,3‐hexafluoro‐2‐propanol (HFIP) with 2‐bromopropionitrile as initiator and N,N,N,N′‐tetramethylethylenediamine as ligand. First‐order kinetics of polymerization with respect to the monomer concentration, linear increase of the molecular weight with monomer conversion, and the highly syndiotactic polyacrylonitrile (PAN) obtained indicate that the SET‐LRP of AN could simultaneously control molecular weight and tacticity of PAN. An increase in syndiotacticity of PAN obtained in HFIP was observed compared with that obtained by SET‐LRP in N,‐N‐dimethylformamide (DMF). The syndiotacticity markedly increased with the HFIP volume. The syndiotacticity of PAN prepared by SET‐LRP of AN using Sm powder as catalyst in DMF was higher than that prepared with Cu powder as catalyst. The increase in syndiotacticity of PAN with Sm content was more pronounced than the increase in its isotacticity. The block copolymer PAN‐b‐polymethyl methacrylate (52,310 molecular weight and 1.34 polydispersity) was successfully prepared. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Sn(0)‐mediated single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) of acrylonitrile (AN) with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) as initiator and hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) as ligand in N, N‐dimethylformamide (DMF) was studied. The polymerization obeyed first order kinetic. The molecular weight of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) increased linearly with monomer conversion and PAN exhibited narrow molecular weight distributions. Increasing the content of Sn(0) resulted in an increase in the molecular weight and the molecular weight distribution. Effects of ligand and initiator were also investigated. The block copolymer PAN‐b‐polymethyl methacrylate with molecular weight at 126,130 and polydispersity at 1.36 was successfully obtained. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Controlled radical polymerizations of N‐ethylmethylacrylamide (EMA) by atom transfer radical polymerization and reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer processes were investigated in detail for the first time, employing complementary characterization techniques including gel permeation chromatography, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry. In both cases, relatively good control of the polymerization of EMA was achieved, as revealed by the linear evolution of molecular weights with monomer conversions and the low polydispersity of poly(N‐ethylmethylacrylamide) (PEMA). The thermal phase transitions of well‐defined PEMA homopolymers with polydispersities less than 1.2 and degrees of polymerization up to 320 in aqueous solution were determined by temperature‐dependent turbidity measurements. The obtained cloud points (CPs) vary in the range of 58–68 °C, exhibiting inverse molecular weight and polymer concentration dependences. Moreover, the presence of a carboxyl group instead of an alkyl one at the PEMA chain end can elevate its CP by ~3–4 °C. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polystyrene with a benzyl ester of carboxylic acid at the center of a polymer skeleton was synthesized by living radical polymerization. The initiator used had two functional groups for 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinoxyl (TEMPO)‐mediated living radical polymerization on the benzyl and the carboxylic sides of the benzyl ester. Introduction of the benzyl ester changed the polystyrene from a crosslink type to a scission type polymer on γ‐irradiation. Irradiation of the polymer resulted in a binary change of the molecular weight because of the dissociative capture of secondary electrons by the benzyl ester, as: The binary change of the molecular weight suggests that the polymer can be used as a new type of radiation resist with high sensitivity and spatial resolution to ionizing and high resistivity to plasma etching. The number of scissions per 100 eV radiation energy absorbed was 0.29, which was about one fourth of the yield of secondary electrons. The low efficiency was because of the recombination of polymer radicals generated by the dissociative electron attachment. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Vinyl‐conjugated monomer (methyl acrylate, MA) and allyl 2‐bromopropanoate (ABP)‐possessing unconjugated C?C and active C? Br bonds were polymerized via the Cu(0)‐mediated simultaneous chain‐ and step‐growth radical polymerization at ambient temperature using Cu(0) as catalyst, N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as ligand and dimethyl sulfoxide as solvent. The conversion was reached higher than 98% within 20 h. The obtained polymers showed block structure consisting of polyester and vinyl polymer moieties. The Cu(0)‐catalyzed simultaneous chain‐ and step‐growth radical polymerization mechanism was demonstrated by NMR, matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization time‐of‐flight, and GPC analyses. Furthermore, the obtained copolymers of MA and ABP were further modified with poly(N‐isopropylamide) through radical thiol‐ene “click” chemistry from the terminal double bond. The thermoresponsive behavior of this block copolymer was investigated. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2013 , 51, 3907–3916  相似文献

Use of ionic liquids as reaction media was investigated in the design of an environmentally friendly single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) for acrylonitrile (AN) without any ligand by using Fe(0) wire as catalyst and 2‐bromopropionitrile as initiator. 1‐Methylimidazolium acetate ([mim][AT]), 1‐methylimidazolium propionate ([mim][PT]), and 1‐methylimidazolium valerate ([mim][VT]) were applied in this study. First‐order kinetics of polymerization with respect to the monomer concentration, linear increase of the molecular weight, and narrow polydispersity with monomer conversion showed the controlled/living radical polymerization characters. The sequence of the apparent polymerization rate constant of SET‐LRP of AN was kapp ([mim][AT]) > kapp ([mim][PT]) > kapp ([mim][VT]). The living feature of the polymerization was also confirmed by chain extensions of polyacrylonitrile with methyl methacrylate. All three ionic liquids were recycled and reused and had no obvious effect on the controlled/living nature of SET‐LRP of AN. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Crosslinking copolymerization of butyl methacrylate with a small amount of divinylbenzene (DVB) was carried out using single‐electron transfer‐living radical polymerization initiated with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and catalyzed by Cu(0)/N‐ligand in N,N‐dimethylformamide to produce a highly oil‐absorbing gel. The polymerization, gelation process, and oil‐absorbing properties were studied in detail. Analysis of monomer conversion with reaction time showed that the polymerization followed first‐order kinetics for both linear and crosslinking polymerization before gelation. Higher levels of DVB led to earlier gelation and the influence of N‐ligand on gelation was also significant. Under optimal conditions, oil absorption of the prepared gel to chloroform could reach 42.1 g·g?1. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2013, 51, 3233–3239  相似文献

Well‐defined mikto‐topology star polystyrene composed of one cyclic arm and four linear arms was synthesized by a combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and Cu‐catalyzed azide‐alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) click reaction. First, the bromine‐alkyne α,ω‐linear polystyrenes containing four hydroxyl groups protected with acetone‐based ketal groups were synthesized by ATRP of styrene using a designed initiator. Then, the bromine end‐group was converted to the azide and the linear polystyrene was cyclized intra‐molecularly by the CuAAC reaction. The four hydroxyl groups were released by deprotection and then esterified with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide to produce a cyclic polymer bearing four ATRP initiating units. By subsequent ATRP of styrene to grow linear polymers with the cyclic polystyrene as a macroinitiator, the mikto‐topology star polymers were prepared. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) provides an excellent tool for the straightforward synthesis of well‐defined macromolecules. Heterogeneous Cu(0)‐ catalysis is employed to synthesize a novel photoresist material with high control over the molecular architecture. Poly(γ‐butyrolactone methacrylate)‐co‐(methyladamantly methacrylate) was synthesized. Kinetic experiments were conducted demonstrating that both monomers, γ‐butyrolactone methacrylate (GBLMA) and methyl adamantly methacrylate (MAMA), are successfully homopolymerized. In both cases polymerization kinetic is of first order and the molecular weights increase linearly with conversion. The choice of a proper solvent was decisive for the SET‐LRP process and organic solvent mixtures were found to be most suitable. Also, the kinetic of the copolymerization of GBLMA and MAMA was investigated. Following first order kinetics in overall monomer consumption and exhibiting a linear relationship between molecular weights and conversion a “living” process was established. This allowed for the straightforward synthesis of well‐defined photoresist polymers. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 48: 2251–2255, 2010  相似文献

The Cu(0)‐mediated single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) using ethyl 2‐bromoisobutyrate (EBiB) as an initiator with Cu(0)/N,N,N′,N′′,N′′‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as a catalyst system in 1,1,1,3,3,3‐hexafluoro‐2‐propanol (HFIP) was studied. The polymerization showed some living features: the measured number‐average molecular weight (Mn,GPC) increased with monomer conversion and produced polymers with relatively low polydispersities. The increase of HFIP concentration improved the controllability over the polymerization with increased initiation efficiency and lowered polydispersity values. 1H NMR, MALDI‐TOF‐MS spectra, and chain extension reaction confirmed that the resultant polymer was end‐capped by EBiB species, and the polymer can be reactivated for chain extension. In contrast, in the cases of dimethyl sulfoxide or N,N‐dimethylformamide as reaction solvent, the polymerizations were uncontrolled. The different effects of the solvents on the polymerization indicated that the mechanism of SET‐LRP differed from that of atom transfer radical polymerization. Moreover, HFIP also facilitated the polymerization with control over stereoregularity of the polymers. Higher concentration of HFIP and lower reaction temperature produced higher syndiotactic ratio. The syndiotactic ratio can be reached to about 0.77 at 1/1.5 (v/v) of MMA/HFIP at ?18 °C. In conclusion, using HFIP as SET‐LRP solvent, the dual control over the molecular weight and tacticity of PMMA was realized. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of ferrocene‐based well‐defined amphiphilic graft copolymers, consisting of hydrophilic poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate] (PPEGMEA) backbone and hydrophobic poly(2‐acryloyloxyethyl ferrocenecarboxylate) (PAEFC) side chains were synthesized by successive single‐electron‐transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The backbone was prepared by SET‐LRP of PEGMEA macromonomer, and it was then treated with lithium di‐isopropylamide and 2‐bromopropionyl bromide at ?78 °C to give PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator. The targeted well‐defined graft copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.32) were synthesized via ATRP of AEFC initiated by PPEGMEA‐Br macroinitiator, and the molecular weights of the backbone and side chains were both controllable. The electro‐chemical behaviors of graft copolymers were studied by cyclic voltammetry, and it was found that graft copolymers were more difficult to be oxidized, and the reversibility of electrode process became less with raising the content of PAEFC segment. The effects of the preparation method, the length of hydrophobic PAEFC segment, and the initial water content on self‐assembly behavior of PPEGMEA‐g‐PAEFC graft copolymers in aqueous media were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The morphologies of micelles could transform from cylinders to spheres or rods with changing the preparation condition and the length of side chains. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
