The autocatalytic thermal polymerization behavior of three benzoxazine monomers containing carboxylic acid functionalities is reported. Several mixtures of these carboxylic monomers and 3‐phenyl‐3,4‐dihydro‐2H‐1,3‐benzoxazine were prepared and their thermal polymerization behavior was analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry. The acid character of these reactive monomers increases the concentration of oxonium species, thus catalyzing the benzoxazine ring opening reaction. In this way the polymerization temperature decreased by as much as 100 °C in some cases. The existence of decarboxylation processes at high temperatures has been established by FTIR‐ATR and related to the increase in thermal stability observed by TGA in some cases. A relationship between the presence of carboxylic groups in the resulting materials and their flame retardancy behavior has also been established. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To evaluate the influence of the electronic effects on the polymerization temperature, we looked at several 3‐phenyl‐3,4‐dihydro‐2‐H‐1,3‐benzoxazine monomers with electron‐withdrawing or electron‐donating groups in the 6 and 4′ positions. The monomers were synthesized and characterized using different synthetic methods to achieve the best possible results. The thermal polymerization of these benzoxazine monomers was analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry, and the polymerization behavior and the polymer characteristics were related to the electronic character of the substituent and the polymerization mechanism. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A high‐molecular‐weight polymer (PBz) possessing reactive benzoxazine groups in the main chain was prepared through the Diels–Alder reaction using bis(3‐furfuryl‐3,4‐dihydro‐2H‐1,3‐benzoxazinyl)isopropane (BPA‐FBz) and bismaleimide (BMI) as monomers. The chemical structure of PBz is characterized with FTIR and 1H NMR. The polymer PBz was further thermally reacted with a high performance polymer (PBz‐R) through the ring‐opening addition reaction of benzoxazine groups and the addition reaction of maleimide groups. PBz‐R exhibit a high glass transition temperature of 242 °C, good thermal stability, high flame retardancy, high mechanical strength, and great flexibility. Another crosslinked polymer (PBz‐BR) curing from the mixture of BPA‐FBz and BMI was also prepared. The properties of PBz‐BR are also attractive but, however, not as good as what observed with PBz‐R. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 6509–6517, 2008  相似文献

The click‐coupling reaction was applied to polycondensation, to synthesize a high‐molecular weight prepolymer having benzoxazine moieties in the main chain. For the polycondensation, a bifunctional N‐propargyl benzoxazine was synthesized from bisphenol A, propargylamine, and formaldehyde. The propargyl group was efficiently used for the copper(I)‐catalyzed alkyne‐azide “click” reaction with p‐xylene‐α,α′‐diazide, to give the corresponding linear polycondensate having 1,2,3‐triazole junctions. The polycondensation proceeded in N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF) at room temperature. By this highly efficient “click‐” polycondensation reaction, the benzoxazine ring in the monomer was successfully introduced into the polymer main chain without any side reaction. The obtained polymer (=prepolymer) underwent thermal crosslinking to afford the corresponding product, which was insoluble in a wide range of organic solvents and exhibited higher thermal stability than the polymer before crosslinking. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The thermal properties of physical blends containing benzoxazine monomer and polycaprolactone (PCL) were monitored by DSC and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The ring‐opening reaction and subsequent polymerization reaction of the benzoxazine were facilitated significantly by the presence of a PCL modifier. Hydrogen‐bond formation between the hydroxyl groups of polybenzoxazine and the carbonyl groups of PCL was evident from the FTIR spectra. Only one glass‐transition temperture (Tg) value was found in the composition range investigated, and the Tg value of the resulting blend appeared to be higher in the blend with a greater amount of PCL. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(urethane‐benzoxazine) films as novel polyurethane ( PU )/phenolic resin composites were prepared by blending a benzoxazine monomer ( Ba ) and PU prepolymer that was synthesized from 2,4‐tolylene diisocyanate (TDI) and polyethylene adipate polyol (MW ca. 1000) in 2 : 1 molar ratio. DSC of PU/Ba blend showed an exotherm with maximum at ca. 246 °C due to the ring‐opening polymerization of Ba, giving phenolic OH functionalities that react with isocyanate groups in the PU prepolymer. The poly(urethane‐benzoxazine) films obtained by thermal cure were transparent, with color ranging from yellow to pale wine with increase of Ba content. All the films have only one glass transition temperature (Tg ) from viscoelastic measurements, indicating no phase separation in poly(urethane‐benzoxazine) due to in situ polymerization. The Tg increased with the increase of Ba content. The films containing 10 and 15% of Ba have characteristics of an elastomer, with elongation at break at 244 and 182%, respectively. These elastic films exhibit good resilience with excellent reinstating behavior. The films containing more than 20% of Ba have characteristics of plastics. The poly(urethane‐benzoxazine) films showed excellent resistance to the solvents such as tetrahydrofuran, N,N‐dimethyl formamide, and N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone that easily dissolve PU s. Thermal stability of PU was greatly enhanced even with the incorporation of a small amount of Ba . © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 4165–4176, 2000  相似文献

The cocuring behaviors of 3‐phenyl‐3,4‐dihydro‐2H‐1,3‐benzoxazine (P‐ABz) and various N‐phenylmaleimide compounds were studied with DSC, FTIR, and TGA‐GC/MS. The presence of benzoxazine compound promoted the polymerization of maleimide groups. In contrast, 4‐hydroxyphenylmaleimide (MI‐OH) and 4‐maleimidobenzoic acid (MI‐COOH), which possess acidic moieties, showed an acid‐catalytic effect on the polymerization of benzoxazine groups. The cocuring composition of P‐ABz/MI‐COOH showed low polymerization temperatures, high glass transition temperature above 220 °C, and comparable thermal stability to conventional polybenzoxazines. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report our work for preparing cross‐linked polyimide via a series of imide functional benzoxazine resins as precursors. The structures of synthesized monomers have been confirmed by 1H NMR and FT‐IR. Among this class of benzoxazine monomers, the ortho‐imide functional benzoxazine resins show useful features both in the synthesis of benzoxazine monomers and the properties of the corresponding thermosets. For the cross‐linked polyimides based on ortho‐imide functional benzoxazine, an additional route is adopted to form a more thermally stable cross‐linked polybenzoxazole with the release of carbon dioxide. The ortho‐imide functional benzoxazine resins show the possibility to form high performance and even super high performance thermosets with low cost and easy processability. The thermal properties are evaluated by DSC and TGA. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2015 , 53, 1330–1338  相似文献

Nanomagnetite thermosets were obtained by thermally activated ring opening copolymerization of benzoxazine groups coated on the surface of the nanomagnetite with bare benzoxazine. For this purpose, carboxylic acid containing 1,3‐benzoxazine was synthesized and covalently bonded on magnetite nanoparticles by postcoating method. The average size of benzoxazine coated nanoparticles was 40–100 nm as determined by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) measurements. The crystal structure of benzoxazine coated nanoparticles was shown to be magnetite by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Thermally activated curing behavior of nanomagnetite‐benzoxazines has also been studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Magnetic and thermal properties of the cured samples were investigated. It was shown that the precursor nanomagnetite benzoxazine and cured samples exhibited typical ferromagnetic character with low coercivities between 1.5 and 2.5 Oe. The cured samples showed high thermal stability. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 6780–6788, 2008  相似文献

A silicon‐containing benzoxazine BATMS‐Bz (1,3‐bis(3‐aminopropyl)tetramethyldisiloxane‐benzoxazine) was used for polybenzoxazine modification by means of formation of benzoxazine copolymers with 3,4‐dihydro‐3‐phenyl‐2H‐1,3‐benzoxazine (Ph‐Bz) and 3‐furfuryl‐3,4‐dihydro‐2H‐1,3‐benzoxazine (F‐Bz), respectively. Ph‐Bz/BATMS‐Bz copolymers showed a positive deviation due the presence of intermolecular hydrogen bonding. However, this effect was not observed with F‐Bz/BATMS‐Bz copolymers. Meanwhile, BATMS‐Bz incorporation exhibited significant effect on toughening polybenzoxazines. It is therefore demonstrated that BATMS‐Bz is a high performance modifier to simultaneously enhance the Tg and toughness of polybenzoxazines. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A difunctional benzoxazine (coPh‐apa) with a conjugated alkyne group is synthesized by the oxidative coupling reaction from a monocycle‐benzoxazine (Ph‐apa) containing an alkyne group. A model compound, 1,4‐diphenylbutadiyne (coPa), is used to study the curing reaction process of coPh‐apa by DSC, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and 13C NMR, and the results suggest that the conjugated alkyne groups are involved in the crosslinking reaction via the trimerization reaction of the conjugated alkynyl groups and the Diels–Alder reaction. Furthermore, thermal properties of the polybenzoxazine are studied by dynamic thermomechanical analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. A glass‐transition temperature (Tgs) of as high as 412 °C and a char yield of 75.6% at 800 °C under nitrogen are obtained with the aid of the conjugated alkyne groups. Its excellent heat resistance dominates most thermosetting resins and will serve for heat shields. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2019, 57, 1587–1592  相似文献

A new class of high‐performance resins of combined molecular structure of both traditional phenolics and benzoxazines has been developed. The monomers termed as methylol‐functional benzoxazines were synthesized through Mannich condensation reaction of methylol‐functional phenols and aromatic amines, including methylenedianiline (4,4′‐diaminodiphenylmethane) and oxydianiline (4,4′‐diaminodiphenyl ether), in the presence of paraformaldehyde. For comparison, other series of benzoxazine monomers were prepared from phenol, corresponding aromatic amines, and paraformaldehyde. The as‐synthesized monomers are characterized by their high purity as judged from 1H NMR and Fourier transform infrared spectra. Differential scanning calorimetric thermograms of the novel monomers show two exothermic peaks associated with condensation reaction of methylol groups and ring‐opening polymerization of benzoxazines. The position of methylol group relative to benzoxazine structure plays a significant role in accelerating polymerization. Viscoelastic and thermogravimetric analyses of the crosslinked polymers reveal high Tg (274–343 °C) and excellent thermal stability when compared with the traditional polybenzoxazines. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, a solid mechanochemical route to prepare core‐shell structured particles was introduced. X‐ray photoelectron spectrum, transmission electron microscope and dissolving experimental results indicated the formation of [(inorganic particle)/(elastomer)] core‐shell structured particles. The thermal stable experiments showed that untreated SiO2 can cause dehydrochlorination of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and discoloration of PVC/SiO2 composites and the formation of core‐shell structured SiO2 particles will improve the thermal stability of PVC/SiO2 composites. The mechanical properties and rheological results showed that the formation of core‐shell structured SiO2 particles can both improve the mechanical and processing properties of PVC/SiO2 composite. ACR in PVC/(SiO2‐PMMA‐ACR) composites acted not only as toughener for PVC matrix but also as cushion breaker if the content of ACR is enough. Meanwhile compared with other SiO2 particles the formation of core‐shell structured SiO2 particles can decrease the apparent viscosity, increase the critical shear rate and improve the appearance of extrudes of PVC/SiO2 composites. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Furan‐containing benzoxazine monomers, 3‐furfuryl‐3,4‐dihydro‐2H‐1,3‐benzoxazine (P‐FBz) and bis(3‐furfuryl‐3,4‐dihydro‐2H‐1,3‐benzoxazinyl)isopropane (BPA‐FBz), were prepared using furfurylamine as a raw material. The chemical structures of P‐FBz and BPA‐FBz were characterized with FTIR, 1H NMR, elemental analysis, and mass spectrometry. Formation of furfurylamine Mannich bridge networks in the polymerizations of P‐FBz and BPA‐FBz increased the cross‐linking densities and thermal stability of the resulting polybenzoxazines. P‐FBz‐ and BPA‐FBz‐based polymers also exhibited high glass transition temperatures above 300 °C, high char yields, and low flammability with limited oxygen index values of 31. The dielectric (Dk = 3.21–3.39) and mechanical properties (high storage modulus of 3.0–3.9 GPa and low coefficient of thermal expansion of 37.7–45.4 ppm) of the P‐FBz‐ and BPA‐FBz‐based polymers were superior or comparable to other polybenzoxazines. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Aside from their outstanding properties such as thermal and chemical stability and excellent mechanical performance, benzoxazines suffer from high polymerization temperatures. Isomeric mixtures of bifunctional benzoxazines based on resorcinol proved already to be highly reactive monomers enabling polymerizations at lower temperatures. This contribution describes the polymerization behavior of single benzoxazine isomers and furthermore the influence of different substituents at the aniline moiety on the curing temperature. Single isomers of bifunctional benzoxazines are now accessible in a straightforward one‐pot synthesis starting from resorcinol and the appropriate N‐phenyl functionalized aniline component. The asymmetric benzoxazine monomers bearing no (R‐a: Tpeak = 179 °C) or electron‐donating substituents in meta position to N (R‐3,5dma: Tpeak = 183 °C) succeed in lowering the polymerization temperature. Additionally, the impact of several initiating systems was studied resulting in a decrease of the polymerization temperature for all studied resorcinol derived benzoxazine isomers (down to 144 °C). © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A benzoxazine compound with a maleimide group, 3‐phenyl‐3,4‐dihydro‐2H‐6‐(N‐maleimido)‐1,3‐benzoxazine (HPM‐Ba), was prepared from N‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)maleimide, formaldehyde, and aniline. The chemical structure of HBM‐Ba was identified by FT‐IR, 1H‐NMR, and elemental analysis. HPM‐Ba showed a melting point of 52–55 °C and good solubility in common organic solvents. HPM‐Ba showed a two‐stage process of thermal polymerization. The first stage arose from the polymerization of maleimide groups, and the second one was the ring‐opening reaction of benzoxazine groups. Fusible polymaleimides with a Tg of around 100 °C could be obtained by thermally polymerizing HPM‐Ba at 130 °C. Further polymerizing the polymaleimides at 240 °C resulted in a completely cured resin showing a Tg at 204 °C. Good thermal stability and self‐extinguishing behavior was observed with the cured polybenzoxazine resins. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 5954–5963, 2004  相似文献

A trifunctional benzoxazine, 1,3,5‐tris(3‐phenyl‐3,4‐dihydro‐2H‐benzo[1,3]oxazin‐6‐yl)benzene (T‐Bz) was synthesized and in an effort to reduce its curing temperature (curing maxima at 238 °C), it was mixed with various phenolic nucleophiles such as phenol (PH), p‐methoxy phenol (MPH), 2‐methyl resorcinol (MR), hydroquinone (HQ), pyrogallol (PG), 2‐naphthol (NPH), 2,7‐dihydroxy naphthalene (DHN), and 1,1'‐bi‐2‐naphthol (BINOL). The influence of these phenolic nucleophiles on ring‐opening polymerization temperature of T‐Bz was examined by DSC and FTIR analysis. T‐Bz undergoes a complete ring‐opening addition reaction in the presence of bi‐ and trifunctional phenolic nucleophiles (MR/HQ/PG/DHN) at 140 °C (heated for 3 h) and forms a networked polybenzoxazine (NPBz). The NPBzs showed a high thermal stability with Td20 of 350–465 °C and char yield of 67–78% at 500 °C; however, a diminutive weight loss (6.9–9.8%) was observed at 150–250 °C (Td5: 215–235 °C) due to degradation of phenolic end groups. This article also gives an insight on how the traces of phenolic impurities can alter the thermal properties of pure benzoxazine monomer as well as its corresponding polymer. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three fluorinated benzoxazines ( 14–16 ), which cannot be synthesized by the traditional one‐step approaches, were synthesized by a three‐step procedure using fluorinated aromatic diamines ( 2–4 ) as starting materials. The structures of the monomers were confirmed by 1H NMR, IR, and high‐resolution mass spectra. The low dielectric thermosets, P( 14–16 ), were prepared by ring‐opening of ( 14–16 ). IR analysis was utilized to monitor the ring‐opening reaction of ( 14–16 ) and to propose the structures of P( 14–16 ). The thermal and dielectric properties of P( 14–16 ) were studied and compared with a nonfluorinated polybenzoxazine P( 13 ), which is derived form the ring‐opening of 2,2‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl)propane ( 1 ). Besides, the structure–property relationship of the P( 13–16 ) is discussed. According to Tg measurement, the ortho‐positioned CF3 substituents impart greater steric hindrance for ring‐opening of benzoxazines than CF3 substituents of hexafluoropropane. Incorporating a biphenol F‐based benzoxazine, ( F‐a ), into fluorinated benzoxazines ( 15–16 ) can dilute the effect of ortho‐positioned CF3 substituents on steric hindrance, leading to a higher crosslinking density and consequently a higher Tg. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A microphase‐separated, amphiphilic graft copolymer consisting of a poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) backbone and poly(oxyethylene methacrylate) (POEM) side chains, (PVC‐g‐POEM at 62:38 wt %) was synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), FTIR spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) clearly revealed that the “grafting from” method using ATRP was successful and that the graft copolymer molecularly self‐assembled into discrete nanophase domains of continuous PVC and isolated POEM regions. The self‐assembled graft copolymer film was used to template the growth of silver nanoparticles in solid state by introducing a AgCF3SO3 precursor and a UV irradiation process. The in situ formation of silver nanoparticles in the graft copolymer template film was confirmed by TEM, UV–visible spectroscopy, and wide angle X‐ray scattering. FTIR spectroscopy and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy also demonstrated the selective incorporation and in situ formation of silver nanoparticles within the hydrophilic POEM domains, presumably due to strong interactions between the silver and the ether oxygen in POEM. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Generally, protection and deprotection procedures of amino groups are required in preparing propargyl ether‐containing benzoxazines. In this study, we report a facile, deprotection‐free preparation of a propargyl ether‐containing phosphinated benzoxazine (2) from the nucleophilic substitution of a phenolic OH‐containing phosphinated benzoxazine (1) and propargyl bromide in the catalysis of potassium carbonate. The structure of (2) was characterized and confirmed by a high‐resolution mass spectrum, 1H, 13C, 1H‐1H, 1H‐13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra, and X‐ray single crystal diffractogram. infrared (IR) and differential scanning calorimetry were used to monitor the ring‐opening of benzoxazine and crosslinking of propargyl ether. The microstructure and the structure–property relationship of the resulting homopolymers and copolymers are discussed. The Tg of homopolymer of (2) is 208 °C by dynamic mechanical analysis, the coefficient of thermal expansion is 43 ppm/°C, and Td 5% (N2) is 393 °C, respectively, which are higher than those of the homopolymer of (1) . Similar trends were observed in the copolymerization system. The results demonstrate the beneficial effect of crosslinking afforded by the propargyl ether group is higher than that by the phenolic OH group. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
