Experiments have been carried out to study heat transfer enhancement from a heated rectangular flat plate in pulsating flows. A heat transfer empirical formula of the heated rectangular flat plate in pulsating flows was developed that correlates the heat transfer enhancement factor to the Womersley number (α = 3.3–23.8), the Reynolds number (Re = 527–4,217), and the pressure coefficient (C p  = 41.3–31,644.6). The results demonstrate that heat transfer from the rectangular flat plate was enhanced significantly under proper conditions. In addition, the influence of the Reynolds number on the heat transfer enhancement factor increases as the pressure amplitude increases.  相似文献

Forced convection heat transfer from a helically coiled heat exchanger embedded in a packed bed of spherical glass particles was investigated experimentally. With dry air at ambient pressure and temperature as a flowing fluid, the effect of particle size, helically coiled heat exchanger diameter, and position was studied for a wide range of Reynolds numbers. It was found that the particle diameter, the helically coiled heat exchanger diameter and position, and the air velocity are of great influence on the convective heat transfer between the helically coiled heat exchanger and air. Results indicated that the heat transfer coefficient increased with increasing the air velocity, increasing helically coiled heat exchanger diameter, and decreasing the particle size. The highest heat transfer coefficients were obtained with the packed-bed particle size of 16 mm and heat exchanger coil diameter of 9.525 mm (1/4 inch) at a Reynolds number range of 1,536 to 4,134 for all used coil positions in the conducted tests. A dimensionless correlation was proposed for Nusselt number as a function of Reynolds number, particle size, coil size, and coil position.  相似文献

Air bubble injection was employed to increase the heat transfer rate (Nusselt number) of a vertical shell and coiled tube heat exchanger in this article. Hot and cold water flowed into the coil side and shell side of heat exchanger, respectively, and air bubbles were injected inside the shell side of heat exchanger via a memorable method. Bubbles' vertical movement due to buoyancy forcing through the heat exchanger can enhance the heat transfer rate by mixing the thermal boundary layer, increasing the turbulence level of the fluid flow and increasing the shell-side fluid Reynolds number.  相似文献

Abstract

This article presents an experimental study of the local heat transfer on the rotor surface in a discoidal rotor-stator system air-gap in which an air jet comes through the stator and impinges the rotor. To determine the surface temperatures, measurements were taken on the rotor, using an experimental technique based on infrared thermography. A thermal balance was used to identify the local convective heat transfer coefficient. The influence of the axial Reynolds number Re j and the rotational Reynolds number Re was measured and compared with the data available in the literature. Local convective heat transfer coefficients were obtained for a dimensionless space between the two disks G = 0.01, for Re j between 0 and 41,666, and for Re between 20,000 and 516,000. The flow data found in the literature can be used to explain the heat transfers in this small space configuration. In fact, the rotating disk can be divided into two influence zones: one dominated by the air jet near the center of the rotor and one affected by both the air jet and rotation. Heat transfers with non zero impinging jets appear to be continuously improved compared to those with no jets, even if the two influence zones mentioned previously are situated differently.  相似文献

The current study was conducted to investigate the convective heat transfer coefficient of a novel TiO2–CNT hybrid nanofluid through the shell-and-tube heat exchanger under a laminar flow and the effects of temperature and mass fraction on it. TiO2–CNT hybrid nanofluids were prepared using a new and modified hydrolysis technique. The thermal conductivity of the TiO2–CNT hybrid nanofluid and other thermo-physical properties were assessed. Results indicate that the effective thermal conductivity and heat transfer coefficient of the base fluid was influenced significantly and increased by the 0.2 wt% of this novel hybrid nanofluid in distilled water.  相似文献

Transient heat transfer of liquid methane under forced convection in a 1.8 mm × 1.8 mm asymmetrically heated square channel was investigated. This study is aimed at understanding the heat transfer behavior of cryogenic propellant in cooling channels of a regeneratively cooled rocket engine at the start-up condition. To simulate high heat load conditions representative of regeneratively cooled rocket engines, a high heat flux test facility with cryogenic liquid handing capabilities was developed at the Center for Space Exploration Technology Research. The time history of inlet and outlet fluid temperatures and test section channel wall temperatures were measured at high heat flux conditions (from 1.19 to 3.80 MW/m2) and a Reynolds number (Re) range of 1.88 × 105 to 3.45 × 105. The measured wall temperature data point toward possible film boiling within the test section during certain tests, particularly with higher heat fluxes and lower Reynolds number conditions that resulted in higher wall temperatures. The transient average Nusselt numbers (NuL) of the channel obtained from the experimental measurements are lower than those calculated from the Sieder–Tate correlation (NuO); however, the ratio (NuL/NuO) increases with the increase in Reynolds number. The ratio is around 0.25 at the lower end of Re and then increases to 0.7 at the maximum Re studied in the present investigation.  相似文献

Ultrasound is considered to be an effective active heat transfer enhancement method, which is widely used in various fields. But there is no clear understanding of flow boiling heat transfer characteristics in micro/mini-channels under ultrasonic field since the studies related are limited up to now. In this paper, a novel minichannel heat exchanger with two ultrasonic transducers inside the inlet and outlet plenum respectively is designed to experimentally investigate the impacts of ultrasound on flow boiling heat transfer enhancement in a minichannel heat sink. Flow visualization analyses reveal that ultrasound can promote rapid bubble motion, bubble detachment from heating wall surface and thereby new bubble generation, and decrease the length of confined bubble. Furthermore, the flow boiling experiments are initiated employing working fluid R141b at different ultrasonic parameters (e.g., frequency, power, angle of radiation) and heat flux under three types of ultrasound excitations: no ultrasound (NU), single inlet ultrasound (IU), inlet and outlet ultrasound (IOU). The results indicate that ultrasound has obvious augmentation effects on flow boiling heat transfer even though the intensification effects will be limited with the heat flux increases. The higher ultrasonic power, the lower ultrasonic frequency and the higher ultrasonic radiation angle, the better intensification efficiency. The maximum enhancement ratio of have in the saturated boiling section reaches 1.88 at 50 W, 23 kHz and 45° under the experimental conditions. This study will be beneficial for future applications of ultrasound on flow boiling heat transfer in micro/mini-channels.  相似文献

Over a range of 70 < Re a < 9,600, 7 < Pr a < 130, 0 < β < 0.12, and 0.7 < n < 1, circumferential wall temperatures for air–water and air–aqueous polymer (viscoelastic) solution flows over a horizontal cylinder were measured experimentally. The 2.5-cm-diameter and 7.5-cm-long cylinder was heated by passing direct electric current through it. The peripherally averaged heat transfer coefficient for relatively dilute viscoelastic–air solutions, at any fixed flow rate of liquid phase, increases with β. Such increase is more pronounced at lower flow rates of liquid phase. For relatively more elastic solutions, the two-phase heat transfer decreases with increasing β. Such reduction is more pronounced at higher flow rates of liquid phase. A new correlation is proposed for predicting the Nusselt number for air–viscoelastic fluid flows over a heated cylinder in cross flow.  相似文献

Ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems have been applied widely because of their environmental-friendly, energy-saving, and sustainable nature. In this work, heat transfer performance of a single vertical small-scale U-shaped tube ground heat exchanger under hot climatic condition is addressed considering the influences of inlet water temperature, Reynolds number, and backfill materials (raw soil; soil–polyacrylamide (PAM) blend (0.27% blending ratio for PAM). The backfill materials had an important effect on the heat transfer of the ground heat exchanger. At an inlet water temperature of 45°C and Reynolds numbers of 3104 and 4656, the temperature drops of water in the tube in the soil–PAM blend increased by about 0.3 and 0.4°C compared to that in the raw soil. Within Reynolds number from 3104 to 6208, the average surface heat transfer coefficients of the water in the tube in the soil–PAM blend and raw soil at an inlet water temperature of 45°C were 411 and 231 W m?2K?1, respectively. The results suggest that adding the PAM into soil can be an effective manner for enhancing the heat transfer of the ground heat exchanger. The dimensionless surface heat transfer correlation of the water in the U-tube heat exchanger in the soil–PAM blend was obtained. The model could better fit the experimental data within ±10% deviation.  相似文献

We study the scaling properties of heat transfer Nu in turbulent thermal convection at large Prandtl number Pr using a quasi-linear theory. We show that two regimes arise, depending on the Reynolds number Re. At low Reynolds number, NuPr -1/2 and Re are a function of RaPr -3/2. At large Reynolds number NuPr 1/3 and RePr are function only of RaPr 2/3 (within logarithmic corrections). In practice, since Nu is always close to Ra 1/3, this corresponds to a much weaker dependence of the heat transfer in the Prandtl number at low Reynolds number than at large Reynolds number. This difference may solve an existing controversy between measurements in SF6 (large Re) and in alcohol/water (lower Re). We link these regimes with a possible global bifurcation in the turbulent mean flow. We further show how a scaling theory could be used to describe these two regimes through a single universal function. This function presents a bimodal character for intermediate range of Reynolds number. We explain this bimodality in term of two dissipation regimes, one in which fluctuation dominate, and one in which mean flow dominates. Altogether, our results provide a six parameters fit of the curve Nu(Ra, Pr) which may be used to describe all measurements at Pr≥0.7. This paper reports a numerical analysis of the performance of a counter-flow rectangular shaped microchannel heat exchanger (MCHE) using nanofluids as the working fluids. Finite volume method was used to solve the three-dimensional steady, laminar developing flow and conjugate heat transfer in aluminum MCHE. The nanofluids used were Ag, Al2O3, CuO, SiO2, and TiO2 and the performance was compared with water. The thermal, flow fields and performance of the MCHE were analyzed using different nanofluids, different Reynolds numbers and different nanoparticle concentrations. Temperature profile, heat transfer coefficient, pressure profile, and wall shear stress were obtained from the simulations and the performance was discussed in terms of heat transfer rate, pumping power, effectiveness, and performance index. Results indicated enhanced performance with the usage of nanofluids, and slight penalty in pressure drop. The increase in Reynolds number caused an increase in the heat transfer rate and a decrease in the overall bulk temperature of the cold fluid. The increase in nanoparticle concentration also yielded better performance at the expense of increased pressure drop.  相似文献

In this present study, an experimental investigation has been carried out for a roughened double-pass solar air heater. The respective variation in other parameters, such as relative roughness pitch (p/e), relative roughness height (e/Dh), and angle of attack (α), were 5–20, 0.022–0.044, and 30°–75°, respectively. The effect of roughness and operating parameters on Nusselt number (Nu) and friction factor (f) has been determined, and the results are compared with those of a smooth absorber plate; considerable enhancement in both heat transfer and friction factor is noticed. Utilizing these experimental data, correlations for Nusselt number and friction factor correlations were also developed.  相似文献

An experimental setup was built to study the influence of conduction heat loss on the convective heat transfer performance enhanced by an impinging jet in cross-flows. Results revealed that the conduction heat loss ratio (Ec/E) is between 12.0% and 40.1%, and it decreases nonlinearly with the ratio of jet-to-cross-flow velocity. The relative Nusselt number increases with the ratio of jet-to-cross-flow velocity. The maximum peak value and the average are 8.1 and 6.4, respectively. The distribution of the relative Nusselt number seems to be flattened by assuming a constant conduction heat loss ratio.  相似文献

A novel microchannel heat sink with oval-shaped micro pin fins (MOPF) is proposed and the characteristics of fluid flow and heat transfer are studied numerically for Reynolds number (Re) ranging from 157 to 668. In order to study the influence of geometry on flow and heat transfer characteristics, three non-dimensional variables are defined, such as the fin axial length ratio (α), width ratio (β), and height ratio (γ). The thermal enhancement factor (η) is adopted as an evaluation criterion to evaluate the best comprehensive thermal-hydraulic performance of MOPF. Results indicate that the oval-shaped pin fins in the microchannel can effectively prevent the rise of heat surface temperature along the flow direction, which improves the temperature distribution uniformity. In addition, results show that for the studied Reynolds number range and microchannel geometries in this paper, the thermal enhancement factor η increases firstly and then decreases with the increase of α and β. In addition, except for Re = 157, η decreases first and then increases with the increase of the fin height ratio γ. The thermal enhancement factor for MOPF with α = 4, β = 0.3, and γ = 0.5 achieves 1.56 at Re = 668. The results can provide a theoretical basis for the design of a microchannel heat exchanger.  相似文献

The heat transfer characteristics in a stagnation region were investigated experimentally for five circular free jets impinging into a heated flat plate. The local temperature distributions are estimated from the thermal images obtained from an infrared camera. To get a precise heat transfer data over the plate, fully developed straight pipe jets were used in this study. Mean jet Reynolds number varied from 1,000 to 45,000, jet-to-plate vertical non-dimensional distance H/D varied from 2 to 6, and the spacing distance jet-to-jet S/D varied from 2 to 8. A geometrical arrangement of one jet surrounded by four jets an in-line array was tested. The results show that the stagnation point Nusselt number is correlated to a jet Reynolds number as Nust∝Re0.61. The average Nusselt number is higher at a separation distance of 2D for three cases of spacing distances, S/D = 2, 4, and 6.  相似文献

The heat and mass transfer from a grooved tube is investigated experimentally for a falling-film flow. The experiments are conducted on a helical trapezoidal grooved tube at three temperatures of the feeding water: 30°C, 35°C, and 40°C. The Reynolds number (Re) of the air ranges between 1,500 and 3,500. Nusselt number (Nu) is expressed as a function of the Prandtl number (Pr), Re for air (Rea), Re for water (Rew); Sherwood number (Sh) is expressed as a function of the Schmidt number (Sc), Rea, and Rew, and the correlation coefficients are determined.  相似文献

The present study addresses the heat transfer efficiency and entropy production of electrically conducting kerosene-based liquid led by the combined impact of electroosmosis and peristalsis mechanisms. Effects of nonlinear mixed convection heat transfer, temperature-dependent viscosity, radiative heat flux, electric and magnetic fields, porous medium, heat sink/source, viscous dissipation, and Joule heating are presented. The Debye–Huckel linearization approximation is employed in the electrohydrodynamic problem. Mathematical modeling is conducted within the limitations of δ << 1 and Re → 0. Coupled differential equations after implementing a lubrication approach are numerically solved. The essential characteristics of the production of entropy, the factors influencing it, and the characteristics of heat and fluid in relation to various physical parameters are graphically evaluated by assigning them a growing list of numeric values. This analysis reveals that heat transfer enhances by enhancing nonlinear convection and Joule heating parameters. The irreversibility analysis ensures that the minimization of entropy generation is observed when the parameters of viscosity and radiation are held under control. Fluid velocity can be regulated by adjusting the Helmholtz–Smoluchowski velocity and magnetic field strength.  相似文献

The intention of this work is the basic investigations of the fouling behavior in micro heat exchangers. Therefore fouling experiments with calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in an experimental micro heat exchanger were carried out and observed with a digital microscope. The investigations included local temperature measurements confirmed by computational fluid dynamics simulation as well as optical visualization of the fouling process inside the microchannels. The detected fouling resistances R f were in the range of 10?5–10?4 m2 K W?1. Cleaning in place was possible and also optically observed.  相似文献

In this study, the effect of both hexagonal pin fins (HPFs) and cylindrical pin fins (CPFs) into the rectangular channel on heat transfer augmentation, Nusselt number and friction factor were experimentally investigated. In planning of the experiments, different Reynolds number, pin fin array, pin fin geometry and the ratio of the distance between pin fin spacing (s) to the pin fin hydraulic diameter (s/Dh) were chosen as the design parameters. Air was used as the fluid. The Reynolds number, based on the channel hydraulic diameter of the rectangular channel, was varied from 3188 to 19531. In the experiments, the heating plate was made of stainless steel foil. The foil was electrically heated by means of a high current DC power supply to provide a constantly heated flux surface. The heat transfer results were obtained using the infrared thermal imaging technique. The heat transfer results of the hexagonal pin fins (HPFs) and cylindrical pin fins (CPFs) are compared with those of a smooth plate. Best heat transfer performance was obtained with the hexagonal pin fins. The maximum thermal performance factor ((?), was obtained as Re = 3188, staggered array, s/Dh = 0, ? = 2.28.  相似文献
