The stationary Boltzmann equation for hard forces in the context of a two‐component gas is considered in the slab. An L1 existence theorem is proved when one component satisfies a given indata profile and the other component satisfies diffuse reflection at the boundaries. In this paper a method is developed for solving hyperbolic initial boundary value problems in one space dimension using domain decomposition, which can be extended to problems in several space dimensions. We minimize a functional which is the sum of squares of the L 2 norms of the residuals and a term which is the sum of the squares of the L 2 norms of the jumps in the function across interdomain boundaries. To make the problem well posed the interdomain boundaries are made to move back and forth at alternate time steps with sufficiently high speed. We construct parallel preconditioners and obtain error estimates for the method. The Schwarz waveform relaxation method is often employed to solve hyperbolic problems using domain decomposition but this technique faces difficulties if the system becomes characteristic at the inter-element boundaries. By making the inter-element boundaries move faster than the fastest wave speed associated with the hyperbolic system we are able to overcome this problem.  相似文献

Given a ring R, consider the condition: (*) every maximal right ideal of R contains a maximal ideal of R. We show that, for a ring R and 0 ≠ e 2 = eR such that ele ? eRe every proper ideal I of R R satisfies (*) if and only if eRe satisfies (*). Hence with the help of some other results, (*) is a Morita invariant property. For a simple ring R R[x] satisfies (*) if and only if R[x] is not right primitive. By this result, if R is a division ring and R[x] satisfies (*), then the Jacobson conjecture holds. We also show that for a finite centralizing extension S of a ring R R satisfies (*) if and only if S satisfies (*).  相似文献

In this paper we develop two efficient discrete stochastic search methods based on random walk procedure for maximizing system reliability subjected to imperfect fault coverage where uncovered component failures cause immediate system failure, even in the presence of adequate redundancy. The first search method uses a sequential sampling procedure with fixed boundaries at each iteration. We show that this search process satisfies local balance equations and its equilibrium distribution gives most weight to the optimal solution. We also show that the solution that has been visited most often in the first m iterations converges almost surely to the optimal solution. The second search method uses a sequential sampling procedure with increasing boundaries at each iteration. We show that if the increase occurs slower than a certain rate, this search process will converge to the optimal set with probability 1. We consider the system where reliability cannot be evaluated exactly but must be estimated through Monte Carlo simulation. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Let us say that a plane figure F satisfies Steinhaus’ condition if for any positive integer n, there exists a figure F n similar to F which satisfies the condition |Fn?\mathbb Z2|=n{|F_n\cap{\mathbb Z}^2|=n}. For example, the circular disc satisfies Steinhaus’ condition. We prove that every compact convex region in the plane \mathbb R2{\mathbb R^2} satisfies Steinhaus’ condition. We present a randomized procedure for rounding fractional perfect matchings to (integral) matchings. If the original fractional matching satisfies any linear inequality, then with high probability, the new matching satisfies that linear inequality in an approximate sense. This extends the well-known LP rounding procedure of Raghavan and Thompson, which is usually used to round fractional solutions of linear programs.?We use our rounding procedure to design an additive approximation algorithm to the Quadratic Assignment Problem. The approximation error of the algorithm is εn 2 and it runs in n O (log n /ε2) time.?We also describe Polynomial Time Approximation Schemes (PTASs) for dense subcases of many well-known NP-hard arrangement problems, including MINIMUM LINEAR ARRANGEMENT, MINIMUM CUT LINEAR ARRANGEMENT, MAXIMUM ACYCLIC SUBGRAPH, and BETWEENNESS. This note could find use as enrichment material in a course on the classical geometries; its preliminary results could also be used in an advanced calculus course. It is proved that if a, b and c are positive real numbers such that a 2 + b 2 = a 2, then cosh (a) cosh (b) > cosh (c). The proof of this result uses an inequality involving combinatorial symbols and properties of absolutely convergent infinite series. As a corollary, it follows that if a neutral geometry G contains at least one right triangle which satisfies the conclusion of the Pythagorean Theorem, then G is (isomorphic to) Euclidean geometry and, hence, satisfies Playfair's form of the parallel postulate.  相似文献

In this paper, some mapping properties are considered for the maximal multilinear singular integral operator whose kernel satisfies certain minimum regularity condition.  We exhibit an example of a line bundle M on a smooth complex projective variety Y s.t. M satisfies Property N 10 , the 10-module of a minimal resolution of the ideal of the embedding of Y by M is nonzero and M 2 does not satisfy Property N 10 . We studied the solvability of the algebra which satisfies the polynomial identity (x 2)2 = 0. We believe that, if A is a finite dimensional commutative algebra over a field F of characteristic not 2 which satisfies (x 2)2 = 0 for all x ∈ A, then A is solvable. In this note we study the geometry of the largest component C1\mathcal {C}_{1} of critical percolation on a finite graph G which satisfies the finite triangle condition, defined by Borgs et al. (Random Struct. Algorithms 27:137–184, 2005). There it is shown that this component is of size n 2/3, and here we show that its diameter is n 1/3 and that the simple random walk takes n steps to mix on it. By Borgs et al. (Ann. Probab. 33:1886–1944, 2005), our results apply to critical percolation on several high-dimensional finite graphs such as the finite torus \mathbbZnd\mathbb{Z}_{n}^{d} (with d large and n→∞) and the Hamming cube {0,1} n .  相似文献

Using Talagrand's concentration inequality on the discrete cube {0, 1}m we show that given a real‐valued function Z(x) on {0, 1}m that satisfies certain monotonicity conditions one can control the deviations of Z(x) above its median by a local Lipschitz norm of Z at the point x. Summary We investigate local properties of the Green function of the complement of a compact set Ein Rd, d>2. We give a Wiener type characterization for the H?lder continuity of the Green function, thus extending a result of L. Carleson and V. Totik. The obtained density condition is necessary, and it is sufficient as well, provided Esatisfies the cone condition. It is also shown that the H?lder condition for the Green function at a boundary point can be equivalently stated in terms of the equilibrium measure and the solution to the corresponding Dirichlet problem. The results solve a long standing open problem -- raised by Maz'ja in the 1960's -- under the simple cone condition.  相似文献
