The multiple melting behavior of poly(butylene succinate) (PBSu) was studied with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Three different PBSu resins, with molecular weights (MWs) of 1.1 × 105, 1.8 × 105, and 2.5 × 105, were isothermally crystallized at various crystallization temperatures (Tc) ranging from 70 to 97.5 °C. The Tc dependence of crystallization half‐time (τ) was obtained. DSC melting curves for the isothermally crystallized samples were obtained at a heating rate of 10 K min−1. Three endothermic peaks, an annealing peak, a low‐temperature peak L, and a high‐temperature peak H, and an exothermic peak located between peaks L and H clearly appeared in the DSC curve. In addition, an endothermic small peak S appeared at a lower temperature of peak H. Peak L increased with increasing Tc, whereas peak H decreased. The Tc dependence of the peak melting temperatures [Tm(L) and Tm(H)], recrystallization temperature (Tre), and heat of fusion (ΔH) was obtained. Their fitting curves were obtained as functions of Tc. Tm(L), Tre, and ΔH increased almost linearly with Tc, whereas Tm(H) was almost constant. The maximum rate of recrystallization occurred immediately after the melting. The mechanism of the multiple melting behavior is explained by the melt‐recrystallization model. The high MW samples showed similar Tc dependence of τ, and τ for the lowest MW sample was longer than that for the others. Peak L increased with MW, whereas peak H decreased. In spite of the difference of MW, Tm(L), Tm(H), and Tre almost coincided with each other at the same Tc. The ΔH values, that is crystallinity, for the highest MW sample were smaller than those for the other samples at the same Tc. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(butylene succinate) (PBSu) and two poly(butylene succinate‐co‐propylene succinate)s were synthesized via the direct polycondensation reaction. The copolyesters were characterized as having 7.0.and 11.5 mol % propylene succinate (PS) units, respectively, by 1H NMR. A differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and a polarized light microscope (PLM) adopted to study the nonisothermal crystallization of these polyesters at a cooling rate of 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 10 °C/min. Morphology and the isothermal growth rates of spherulites under PLM experiments were monitored and obtained by curve‐fitting. These continuous rate data were analyzed with the Lauritzen?Hoffman equation. A transition of regime II → III was found at 95.6, 84.4, and 77.3 °C for PBSu, PBPSu 95/5, and PBPSu 90/10, respectively. DSC exothermic curves show that all of the nonisothermal crystallization occurred in regime III. DSC data were analyzed using modified Avrami, Ozawa, Mo, Friedman, and Vyazovkin equations. All the results of PLM and DSC measurements indicate that incorporation of minor PS units into PBSu markedly inhibits the crystallization of the resulting polymer. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT)/organo‐attapulgite (ATT) nanocomposites containing 2.5 and 5 wt % nanoparticles loadings were fabricated via a simple melt‐compounding approach. The crystal structure and isothermal crystallization behaviors of PBT composites were studied by wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. The X‐ray diffraction results indicated that the addition of ATT did not alter the crystal structure of PBT and the crystallites in all the samples were triclinic α‐crystals. During the isothermal crystallization, the PBT nanocomposites exhibited higher crystallization rates than the neat PBT and the varied Avrami exponents when compared with the neat PBT. At the same time, the regime II/III transition was also observed in all the samples on the basis of Hoffman‐Laurizten theory, but the transition temperature increased with increasing ATT loadings. The fold surface free energy (σe) of polymer chains in the nanocomposites was lower than that in the neat PBT. It should be reasonable to treat ATT as a good nucleating agent for the crystallization of PBT, which plays a determinant effect on the reduction in σe during the isothermal crystallization of the nanocomposites, even if the existence of ATT could restrict the segmental motion of PBT. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Multiple melting behavior of poly(butylene succinate)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The multiple melting behavior of poly(butylenes succinate) (PBS) isothermally crystallized from the melt was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), temperature modulated DSC (MDSC) and polarized optical microscopy. PBS exhibits at most four melting endotherms (denoted as Tm1, Tm2, Tm3, and Tm4 from high to low temperatures) and a crystallization exotherm (denoted as Tre) in the DSC heating trace. Multiple melting endotherms were observed even at high heating rates. The origins of each endothermal and exothermal peak were discussed in detail. It is suggested that: (i) the crystallization exothermic peak, Tre, relates to the recrystallization of the melt of the crystallites with lower thermal stability; (ii) the Tm1 is ascribed to the melting of crystallites formed through recrystallization; (iii) two crystal populations with different thermal stability are responsible for the Tm2 and Tm3; (iv) the Tm4, which is the annealing peak, represents the transition of the rigid amorphous fraction (RAF) from solid-like RAF into liquid-like amorphous fraction.  相似文献

Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/Barite nanocomposites were prepared by direct melt compounding. The effects of PET‐Barite interfacial interaction on the dynamic mechanical properties and crystallization were investigated by DMA and DSC. The results showed that Barite can act as a nucleating agent and the nucleation activity can be increased when the Barite was surface‐modified (SABarite). SABarite nanoparticles induced preferential lamellae orientation because of the strong interfacial interaction between PET chains and SABarite nanoparticles, which was not the case in Barite filled PET as determined by WAXD. For PET/Barite nanocomposites, the Avrami exponent n increased with increasing crystallization temperature. Although at the same crystallization temperature, the n value will decrease with increasing SABarite content, indicating of the enhancement of the nucleation activity. Avrami analyses suggest that the nucleation mechanism is different. The activation energy determined from Arrhenius equation reduced dramatically for PET/SABarite nanocomposite, confirming the strong interfacial interaction between PET chains and SABarite nanoparticles can reduce the crystallization free energy barrier for nucleus formation. In the DSC scan after isothermal crystallization process, double melting behavior was found. And the double endotherms could be attributed to the melting of recrystallized less perfect crystallites or the secondary lamellae produced during different crystallization processes. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The melting behavior of poly(butylene terephthalate) crystallized isothermally for various times was examined using differential scanning calorimetry. After short crystallization times, the DSC analysis gave two melting peaks, but after longer times, the analysis gave three peaks. The latter triplet of DSC peaks can be denoted as low, middle, and high, starting with the lowest temperature endotherm. The DSC peaks were simulated using a measured recrystallization rate and behavior for PBT and an assumed initial melting point distribution. The low and middle peaks represent the original melting peaks arising from isothermal crystallization. The high melting peak arises from recrystallization during the DSC heating scan. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 36: 1757–1767, 1998  相似文献

The kinetics of crystallization of poly(propylene terephthalate) (PPT) samples of different molecular weights were studied under both isothermal and nonisothermal conditions. The Avrami and Lauritzen–Hoffmann treatments were applied to evaluate kinetic parameters of PPT isothermal crystallization. It was found that crystallization is faster for low‐molecular‐weight samples. The modified Avrami equation, and the combined Avrami–Ozawa method were found to successfully describe the nonisothermal crystallization process. Also, the analysis of Lauritzen–Hoffmmann was tested and it resulted in values close to those obtained with isothermal crystallization data. The nonisothermal kinetic data were corrected for the effect of the temperature lag and shifted alone with the isothermal kinetic data to obtain a single master curve, according to the method of Chan and Isayev, testifying to the consistency between the isothermal and corrected nonisothermal data. A new method for ranking of polymers, referring to the crystallization rates, was also introduced. This involved a new index that combines the maximum crystallization rate observed during cooling with the average crystallization rates over the temperature range of the crystallization peak. Furthermore, the effective energy barrier of the dynamic process was evaluated with the isoconversional methods of Flynn and Friedmann. It was found that the energy barrier is lower for the low‐molecular‐weight PPT. The effect of the catalyst remnants on the crystallization kinetics was also investigated and it was found that this is significant only for low‐molecular‐weight samples. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The multiple melting behavior of poly(butylene succinate) (PBSu) was studied with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Three different PBSu resins, with molecular weights of 1.1 × 105, 1.8 × 105, and 2.5 × 105, were cooled from the melt (150 °C) at various cooling rates (CRs) ranging from 0.2 to 50 K min?1. The peak crystallization temperature (Tc) of the DSC curve in the cooling process decreased almost linearly with the logarithm of the CR. DSC melting curves for the melt‐crystallized samples were obtained at 10 K min?1. Double endothermic peaks, a high‐temperature peak H and a low‐temperature peak L, and an exothermic peak located between them appeared. Peak L decreased with increasing CR, whereas peak H increased. An endothermic shoulder peak appeared at the lower temperature of peak H. The CR dependence of the peak melting temperatures [Tm(L) and Tm(H)], recrystallization temperature (Tre), and heat of fusion (ΔH) was obtained. Their fitting curves were obtained as functions of log(CR). Tm(L), Tre, and ΔH decreased almost linearly with log(CR), whereas Tm(H) was almost constant. Peak H decreased with the molecular weight, whereas peak L increased. It was suggested that the rate of the recrystallization decreased with the molecular weight. Tm(L), Tm(H), Tre, and Tc for the lowest molecular weight sample were lower than those for the others. In contrast, ΔH for the highest molecular weight sample was lower than that for the others. If the molecular weight dependence of the melting temperature for PBSu is similar to that for polyethylene, the results for the molecular weight dependence of PBSu can be explained. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of partially melted nylon‐1212 was investigated with differential scanning calorimetry. Because of partial melting, the pre‐existing crystals changed the crystallization mechanism and had a strong effect on the crystallization process. The Avrami exponent and interfacial free energy of the chain‐folded surface of partially melted nylon‐1212 were higher than those of completely melted nylon‐1212. The work of chain folding was determined to be 5.9 kcal/mol. The activation energy of the isothermal crystallization process was determined to be 399.1 kJ/mol, far higher than that of complete melting. The crystallization rate coefficient and Jeziorny analysis indicated that the ability of nonisothermal crystallization for partially melted nylon‐1212 was enhanced. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article investigated the melting behaviors, crystallization kinetics, and spherulitic morphologies of poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and its copolyester (PBSR) modified with rosin maleopimaric acid anhydride, using wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and polarized optical microscope. Subsequent DSC scans of isothermally crystallized PBS and PBSR exhibited two melting endotherms, respectively, which was due to the melt‐recrystallization process occurring during the DSC scans. The equilibrium melting point of PBSR (125.9 °C) was lower than that of PBS (139 °C). The commonly used Avrami equation was used to describe the isothermal crystallization kinetics. For nonisothermal crystallization studies, the model combining Avrami equation and Ozawa equation was employed. The result showed a consistent trend in the crystallization process. The crystallization rate was decreased, the perfection of crystals was decreased, the recrystallization was reduced, and the spherulitic morphologies were changed when the huge hydrogenated phenanthrene ring was added into the chain of PBS. The activation energy (ΔE) for the isothermal crystallization process determined by Arrhenius method was 255.9 kJ/mol for PBS and 345.7 kJ/mol for PBSR. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, crystallization and melting behavior of metallocene ethylene/α‐olefin copolymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results indicated that the crystallization and melting temperatures for all the samples were directly related to the long ethylene sequences instead of the average sequence length (ASL), whereas the crystallization enthalpy and crystallinity were directly related to ASL, that is, both parameters decreased with a decreasing ASL. Multiple melting peaks were analyzed by thermal analysis. Three phenomena contributed to the multiple melting behaviors after isothermal crystallization, that is, the melting of crystals formed during quenching, the melting‐recrystallization process, and the coexistence of different crystal morphologies. Two types of crystal morphologies could coexist in samples having a high comonomer content after isothermal crystallization. They were the chain‐folded lamellae formed by long ethylene sequences and the bundlelike crystals formed by short ethylene sequences. The coexistence phenomenon was further proved by the AFM morphological observation. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 40: 822–830, 2002  相似文献

The isothermal crystallization kinetics and melting behavior of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) in binary blends with poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) was investigated as a function of PCL molecular mass by differential scanning calorimetry and optical microscopy. The components are miscible in the melt when oligomeric PCL (Mw = 1250) is blended with PBT, whereas only partial miscibility was found in mixtures with higher molecular mass (Mw = 10,000 and 50,000). The equilibrium melting point of PBT in the homopolymer and in blends with PCL was determined through a non-linear extrapolation of the Tm = f(Tc) curve. The PBT spherulitic growth rate and bulk crystallization rate were found to increase with respect to plain PBT in blends with PCL1250 and PCL10000, whereas addition of PCL50000 causes a reduction of PBT solidification rate. The crystallization induction times were determined by differential scanning calorimetry for all the mixtures through a blank subtraction procedure that allows precise estimation of the crystallization kinetics of fast crystallizing polymers. The results have been discussed on the basis of the Hoffman-Lauritzen crystallization theory and considerations on both the transport of chains towards the crystalline growth front and the energy barrier for the formation of critical nuclei in miscible and partially miscible PBT/PCL mixtures are widely debated.  相似文献

We evaluated the relationship between the ionic substituents and nonisothermal crystallization behavior in poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) ionomers, synthesized by the introduction of sulfonated dimethyl fumarate (SDMF) with sodium sulfonate. In addition, we investigated the effect of sodium ions on the molecular structure of the PBS backbone by solid‐state 23Na NMR analysis. Sodium ion aggregates (multiplets) was predominately created with the ionic group concentration, and melt rheology and dynamic melt analysis results showed that multiplet formation induced not only remarkable heterogeneity, but also a high degree of clustering in the PBS chains. At low ionic group concentration, well dispersed multiplets behaved as effective nuclei during the crystallization of the PBS ionomer and accelerated the rate of crystallization. As ionic group concentration grew higher, crystallization rates decreased due to hindered chain mobility by clusters consisting of numerous multiplets. A combined Ozawa and Avrami equation proved to be more effective than the Ozawa equation in describing the nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of PBS and its ionomers. The observed nucleation activity indicates that the nonisothermal crystallization rate is not directly proportional to the ionic group concentration. Superior nucleation activity was observed in PBS ionomer containing 1 mol % SDMF. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 46: 925–937, 2008  相似文献

Isothermal crystallization of poly(tetramethylene ether glycol) (PTMEG) with relatively low molecular weight (Mn = 991, 2004 and 2864, respectively) was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, and the equilibrium melting temperature (T) determined using the Hoffman–Weeks analysis. The crystallization kinetics of PTMEG were characterized using an Avrami analysis. Mechanistic n values ranged from 2.2 to 2.9 for the primary crystallization process for three molecular weight grades, indicating heterogeneous nucleation of spherulites. Polarized light microscopy confirmed that PTMEG crystallized by the growth of spherulites from heterogeneous nuclei. The half–life for crystallization (t1/2) and the composite rate constant were found to be dependent on the degree of supercooling (ΔT) and the molecular weight. X‐ray diffraction method and differential scanning calorimetry analysis have been used to investigate the nonisothermal crystallization of poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB)/poly(ethylene glycol) phosphonates (PEOPAs)‐modified layered double hydroxide (PMLDH) nanocomposites. Effects of cooling rates and PMLDH contents on the nonisothermal crystallization behavior of PHB were explored. These results show that the addition of 2 wt % PMLDH into PHB caused heterogeneous nucleation increasing the crystallization rate and reducing the activation energy. By adding PMLDH into the PHB probably hinder the transport ability of the molecule chains and result in a decreasing crystallity of PHB, thus increasing the activation energy. The correlation among melting behavior, apparent crystallite size, and paracrystalline distortion of PHB/PMLDH nanocomposites has been also discussed. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The double melting behavior of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) was studied with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide‐angle X‐ray analysis. DSC melting curves of melt‐crystallized PBT samples, which we prepared by cooling from the melt (250 °C) at various cooling rates, showed two endothermic peaks and an exothermic peak located between these melting peaks. The cooling rate effect on these peaks was investigated. The melt‐crystallized PBT sample cooled at 24 K min?1 was heated at a rate of 1 K min?1, and its diffraction patterns were obtained successively at a rate of one pattern per minute with an X‐ray measurement system equipped with a position‐sensitive proportional counter. The diffraction pattern did not change in the melting process, except for the change in its peak height. This suggests that the double melting behavior does not originate from a change in the crystal structure. The temperature dependence of the diffraction intensity was obtained from the diffraction patterns. With increasing temperature, the intensity decreased gradually in the low‐temperature region and then increased distinctly before a steep decrease due to the final melting. In other words, the temperature‐dependence curve of the diffraction intensity showed a peak that is interpreted as proof of the recrystallization in the melting process. The peak temperature was 216 °C. The temperature‐dependence curve of the enthalpy change obtained by the integration of the DSC curve almost coincided with that of the diffraction intensity. The double melting behavior in the heating process of PBT is concluded to originate from the increase of crystallinity, that is, recrystallization. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The melting behavior of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) has been investigated, and a simulation has been performed to determine whether the multiple melting endotherms observed during the thermal analysis of PBT can be explained by the simultaneous melting and recrystallization of an initial distribution of crystal melting temperatures that contains only one maximum and two inflection points. Specimens that were cooled at constant rates from the melt showed between one and three melting endotherms upon heating in a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The position and breadth of the crystallization exotherms upon cooling from the melt and small-angle x-ray scattering showed that as the cooling rate is increased, the distribution of melting temperatures broadens and shifts to lower temperatures. By combining temperature-dependent recrystallization with an initial distribution of melting temperatures, simulated DSC curves were produced that agreed well with experimental DSC curves. In instances of triple peaked curves, the high temperature peak was due to crystals formed during the scanning process, and the middle and low temperature peaks were due to crystals originally present in the material. Satisfactory agreement between the experimental and simulated curves was found without considering additional crystallization from the amorphous regions during the scanning process.  相似文献

A copolyester was synthesized and characterized to have 78.6 mol% ethylene succinate unit and 21.4 mol% trimethylene succinate unit by using NMR. The value of the random parameter is 0.97 that can be considered to be a random copolymer. The melting behavior after isothermal crystallization was studied using differential scanning calorimeter by varying the crystallization temperature, the heating rate and the crystallization time. Triple melting peaks were observed. The melting behavior indicates that the upper melting peaks are primarily due to the melting of lamellar crystals with different stability. The Hoffman-Weeks linear plot gives an equilibrium melting temperature of 94.0 °C. The spherulite growth of this copolyester from 72 °C to 30 or 15 °C at a cooling rate of 1 or 2 °C/min was monitored and recorded using an optical microscope equipped with a CCD camera and a DVD recorder. These experiments including the self-nucleation pretreatment took 72 min and 60 min, respectively. Continuous growth rates between melting and glass transition temperatures can be obtained after curve-fitting procedures. These data fit well with those data points measured in the isothermal experiments, which is time consuming. These isothermal and continuous data were separately analyzed with the Hoffman and Lauritzen theory. A regime II-III transition was detected at about 51.5 ± 0.1 °C.  相似文献

Amorphous poly(ether‐ether‐ketone) (PEEK) progressively crosslinks on irradiation with 11.0 MeV protons, and this has a marked effect on the extent of crystallinity that subsequently develops and on the kinetics of the high temperature isothermal crystallization. The extent of crystallinity with time was analyzed using the Avrami equation, and the temperature dependence of the rate constants was analyzed in terms of nucleation theory. While irradiation inhibits the overall rates of crystallization by the reduction in the mobility of the chain segments as observed by the progressive increase in the glass transition temperature, it also alters the fold surface free energy. The observed melting points were consistent with depression of the equilibrium melting point by the crosslinks produced by irradiation. These two effects alone are sufficient to account for the inhibition of crystallization on irradiation of PEEK by protons. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. After isothermal crystallization, poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) showed double endothermic behavior in the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) heating scan. During the heating scans of semicrystalline PET, a metastable melt which comes from melting thinner lamellar crystal populations formed between the low and the upper endothermic temperatures. The metastable melt can recrystallize immediately just above the low melting temperature and form thicker lamellae than the original ones. The thickness and perfection depends on the crystallization time and crystallization temperature. The crystallization kinetics of this metastable melt can be determined by means of DSC. The kinetics analysis showed that the isothermal crystallization of the metastable PET melt proceeds with an Avrami exponent of n = 1.0 ∼ 1.2, probably reflecting one‐dimensional or irregular line growth of the crystal occurring between the existing main lamellae with heterogeneous nucleation. This is in agreement with the hypothesis that the melting peaks are associated with two distinct crystal populations with different thicknesses. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
