An amphiphilic block copolymer, poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly(L ‐lactide‐co‐2‐methyl‐2‐benzoxycarbonyl‐propylene carbonate) [PEG‐b‐P(LA‐co‐MBC)], was synthesized in bulk by the ring‐opening polymerization of L ‐lactide with 2‐methyl‐2‐benzoxycarbonyl‐propylene carbonate (MBC) in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) as a macroinitiator with diethyl zinc as a catalyst. The subsequent catalytic hydrogenation of PEG‐b‐P(LA‐co‐MBC) with palladium hydroxide on activated charcoal (20%) as a catalyst was carried out to obtain the corresponding linear copolymer poly(ethyleneglycol)‐block‐poly(L ‐lactide‐co‐2‐methyl‐2‐carboxyl‐propylenecarbonate) [PEG‐b‐P(LA‐co‐MCC)] with pendant carboxyl groups. DSC analysis indicated that the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of PEG‐b‐P(LA‐co‐MBC) decreased with increasing MBC content in the copolymer, and Tg of PEG‐b‐P(LA‐co‐MCC) was higher than that of the corresponding PEG‐b‐P(LA‐co‐MBC). The in vitro degradation rate of PEG‐b‐P(LA‐co‐MCC) in the presence of proteinase K was faster than that of PEG‐b‐P(LA‐co‐MBC), and the cytotoxicity of PEG‐b‐P(LA‐co‐MCC) to chondrocytes from human fetal arthrosis was lower than that of poly(L ‐lactide). © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article deals with (1) synthesis of novel cyclic carbonate monomer (2‐oxo [1,3]dioxan‐5‐yl)carbamic acid benzyl ester (CAB) containing protected amino groups; (2) ring‐opening copolymerization of the cyclic monomer with L ‐lactide (LA) to provide novel degradable poly(ester‐carbonate)s with functional groups; (3) removal of the protective benzyloxycarbonyl (Cbz) groups by catalytic hydrogenation to afford the corresponding poly(ester‐co‐carbonate)s with free amino groups; (4) grafting of oligopeptide Gly‐Arg‐Gly‐Asp‐Ser‐Tyr (GRGDSY, abbreviated as RGD) onto the copolymer pendant amino groups in the presence of 1,1′‐carbonyldiimidazole (CDI). The structures of P(LA‐co‐CA/RGD) and its precursor were confirmed by 1H NMR analysis. Cell experiments showed that P(LA‐co‐CA/RGD) had improved adhesion and proliferation behavior. Therefore, the novel RGD‐grafted block copolymer is promising for cell or tissue engineering applications. © Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 7022–7032, 2008  相似文献

The synthesis of a new cyclic carbonate monomer containing an allyl group was reported and its biodegradable amphiphilic block copolymer, poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly(L ‐lactide‐co‐5‐methyl‐5‐allyloxycarbonyl‐propylene carbonate) [PEG‐b‐P(LA‐co‐MAC)] was synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of L ‐lactide (LA) and 5‐methyl‐5‐allyloxycarbonyl‐1,3‐dioxan‐2‐one (MAC) in the presence of poly (ethylene glycol) as a macroinitiator, with diethyl zinc as a catalyst. 13C NMR and 1H NMR were used for microstructure identification of the copolymers. The copolymer could form micelles in aqueous solution. The core of the micelles is built of the hydrophobic P(LA‐co‐MAC) chains, whereas the shell is set up by the hydrophilic PEG blocks. The micelles exhibited a homogeneous spherical morphology and unimodal size distribution. By using the cyclic carbonate monomer containing allyl side‐groups, crosslinking of the PEG‐b‐P(LA‐co‐MAC) inner core was possible. The adhesion and spreading of ECV‐304 cells on the copolymer were better than that on PLA films. Therefore, this biodegradable amphiphilic block copolymer is expected to be used as a biomaterial for drug delivery and tissue engineering. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel poly(ester carbonate)s were synthesized by the ring‐opening polymerization of L ‐lactide and functionalized carbonate monomer 9‐phenyl‐2,4,8,10‐tetraoxaspiro[5,5]undecan‐3‐one derived from pentaerythritol with diethyl zinc as an initiator. 1H NMR analysis revealed that the carbonate content in the copolymer was almost equal to that in the feed. DSC results indicated that Tg of the copolymer increased with increasing carbonate content in the copolymer. Moreover, the protecting benzylidene groups in the copolymer poly(L ‐lactide‐co‐9‐phenyl‐2,4,8,10‐tetraoxaspiro[5,5]undecan‐3‐one) were removed by hydrogenation with palladium hydroxide on activated charcoal as a catalyst to give a functional copolymer, poly(L ‐lactide‐co‐2,2‐dihydroxylmethyl‐propylene carbonate), containing pendant primary hydroxyl groups. Complete deprotection was confirmed by 1H NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. The in vitro degradation rate of the deprotected copolymers was faster than that of the protected copolymers in the presence of proteinase K. The cell morphology and viability on a copolymer film evaluated with ECV‐304 cells showed that poly(ester carbonate)s derived from pentaerythritol are good biocompatible materials suitable for biomedical applications. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A functionalized cyclic carbonate monomer containing a cinnamate moiety, 5‐methyl‐5‐cinnamoyloxymethyl‐1,3‐dioxan‐2‐one (MC), was prepared for the first time with 1,1,1‐tri(hydroxymethyl) ethane as a starting material. Subsequent polymerization of the new cyclic carbonate and its copolymerization with L ‐lactide (LA) were successfully performed with diethyl zinc (ZnEt2) as initiator/catalyst. NMR was used for microstructure identification of the obtained monomer and copolymers. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to characterize the functionalized poly(ester‐carbonate). The results indicated that the copolymers displayed a single glass transition temperature (Tg) and the Tg decreased with increasing carbonate content and followed the Fox equation, indicative of a random microstructure of the copolymer. The photo‐crosslinking of the cinnamate‐carrying copolymer was also demonstrated. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 47: 161–169, 2009  相似文献

Our objective was to synthesize and evaluate lactic acid‐ and carbonate‐based biodegradable core‐ and core‐corona crosslinkable copolymers for anticancer drug delivery. Methoxy poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(carbonate‐co‐lactide‐co‐5‐methyl‐5‐allyloxycarbonyl‐1,3‐dioxane‐2‐one) [mPEG‐b‐P(CB‐co‐LA‐co‐MAC)] and methoxy poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(acryloyl carbonate)‐b‐poly(carbonate‐co‐lactide) [mPEG‐b‐PMAC‐b‐P(CB‐co‐LA)] copolymers were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization of LA, CB, and MAC using mPEG as an macroinitiator and 1,8‐diazabicycloundec‐7‐ene as a catalyst. These amphiphilic copolymers which exhibited low polydispersity and critical micelle concentration values (0.8–1 mg/L) were used to prepare micelles with or without drug and stabilized by crosslinking via radical polymerization of double bonds introduced in the core and interface to improve stability. mPEG114b‐P(CB8co‐LA35co‐MAC2.5) had a higher drug encapsulation efficiency (78.72% ± 0.15%) compared to mPEG114b‐PMAC2.5b‐P(CB9co‐LA39) (20.29% ± 0.11%).1H NMR and IR spectroscopy confirmed successful crosslinking (~70%) while light scattering and transmission electron microscopy were used to determine micelle size and morphology. Crosslinked micelles demonstrated enhanced stability against extensive dilution with aqueous solvents and in the presence of physiological simulating serum concentration. Furthermore, bicalutamide‐loaded crosslinked micelles were more potent compared to non‐crosslinked micelles in inhibiting LNCaP cell proliferation irrespective of polymer type. Finally, these results suggest crosslinked micelles to be promising drug delivery vehicles for chemotherapy. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2013  相似文献

The melt ring‐opening/condensation reaction of trans‐4‐hydroxy‐N‐benzyloxycarbonyl‐L‐proline (N‐CBz‐Hpr) with cyclic carbonate [trimethylene carbonate (tri‐MC) or tetramethylene carbonate (tetra‐MC)] at a wide range of molar fractions in the feed produced new degradable poly(ester‐carbonate)s. The influence of reaction conditions such as polymerization time and temperature on the yield and inherent viscosity of the copolymers was investigated. The polymerizations were carried out in bulk at 140 °C with 1.5 wt % stannous octoate as a catalyst for 30 h. The poly(ester‐carbonate)s obtained were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, gel permeation chromatography, and Ubbelohde viscometry. The copolymers synthesized exhibited moderate molecular weights with rather narrow molecular weight distributions. The values of the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of the copolymers depend on the molar fractions of cyclic carbonate. For the poly(N‐CBz‐Hpr‐co‐tri‐MC) system, with a decreased tri‐MC content from 93 to 16 mol %, the Tg increased from ?10 to 60 °C. Similarly, for the poly(N‐CBz‐Hpr‐co‐tetra‐MC) system, when the tetra‐MC content decreased from 80 to 8 mol %, the Tg increased from ?18 to 52 °C. The relationship between the poly(N‐CBz‐Hpr‐co‐tri‐MC) Tg and the compositions was in approximation with the Fox equation. In vitro degradation of these poly(N‐CBz‐Hpr‐co‐tri‐MC)s was evaluated from weight‐loss measurements. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 41: 1435–1443, 2003  相似文献

A novel biodegradable aliphatic poly(L ‐lactide‐co‐carbonate) bearing pendant acetylene groups was successfully prepared by ring‐opening copolymerization of L ‐lactide (LA) with 5‐methyl‐5‐propargyloxycarbonyl‐1,3‐dioxan‐2‐one (PC) in the presence of benzyl alcohol as initiator with ZnEt2 as catalyst in bulk at 100 °C and subsequently used for grafting 2‐azidoethyl β‐D ‐glucopyranoside and 2‐azidoethyl β‐lactoside by the typical “click reaction,” that is Cu(I)‐catalyzed cycloaddition of azide and alkyne. The density of acetylene groups in the copolymer can be tailored by the molar ratio of PC to LA during the copolymerization. The aliphatic copolymers grafted with sugars showed low cytotoxicity to L929 cells, improved hydrophilic properties and specific recognition and binding ability with lectins, that is Concanavalin A (Con A) and Ricinus communis agglutinin (RCA). Therefore, this kind of sugar‐grafted copolymer could be a good candidate in variety of biomedical applications. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐chlorotrifluoroethylene)‐graft‐poly(oxyethylene methacrylate), P(VDF‐co‐CTFE)‐g‐POEM, an amphiphilic comb copolymer with hydrophobic P(VDF‐co‐CTFE) backbone and hydrophilic POEM side chains at 73:27 wt % was synthesized. The POEM side chains were grafted from the P(VDF‐co‐CTFE) mainchain backbone via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using direct initiation of the chlorine atoms in CTFE units. Synthesis of microphase‐separated P(VDF‐co‐CTFE)‐g‐POEM comb copolymer was successful, as confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), FTIR spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Nanocomposite films were prepared using the comb copolymer as a template film and the in situ reduction of AgCF3SO3 precursor to silver nanoparticles under UV irradiation. Silver nanoparticles with 4–8 nm in average size were in situ created in the solid state template film, as revealed by TEM, UV–visible spectroscopy, and wide angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) presented the selective incorporation and the in situ growth of silver nanoparticles within the hydrophilic POEM domains of microphase‐separated comb copolymer film. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Glass transition temperatures (Tgs) of P(AMA‐co‐BA) copolymers and the corresponding homopolymers, where AMA is allyl methacrylate and BA is n‐butyl acrylate, obtained by means of atom transfer radical polymerization were measured using differential scanning calorimetry. Because of the (pseudoliving) nature of this polymerization technique an increase in molecular weight (MW) is produced as the reaction progresses, which gives rise to an increase in Tgs. This increment can be adequately described by the Fox–Flory's equation in both homopolymers. However, in the spontaneous gradient copolymers of P(AMA‐co‐BA), the expected increase in Tg with the augment of the monomer conversion is compensated by the enrichment of BA as the polymerization reaction progresses. These opposite effects with respect to the Tg values almost balance each other, and therefore no significant influence on the MW or on conversion is found. This fact establishes that Tgs can be used to describe the profile of these gradient copolymers, and can be theoretically determined because of its dependence on the molar fraction in the copolymer. From this dependence on chemical composition along with the experimental behavior, a prediction of the Tg variation with the MW was performed. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel graft copolymer consisting of a poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐chlorotrifluoroethylene) backbone and poly(glycidyl methacrylate) side chains, that is, P(VDF‐co‐CTFE)‐g‐PGMA, was synthesized through atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using CTFE units as a macroinitiator. Successful synthesis and microphase‐separated structure of the polymer were confirmed by 1H NMR, FTIR spectroscopy, and TEM. As‐synthesized P(VDF‐co‐CTFE)‐g‐PGMA copolymer was sulfonated by sodium bisulfite, followed by thermal crosslinking with sulfosuccinic acid (SA) via the esterification to produce grafted/crosslinked polymer electrolyte membranes. The IEC values continuously increased with increasing SA content but water uptake increased with SA content up to 10 wt %, above which it decreased again as a result of competitive effect between crosslinking and hydrophilicity of membranes. At 20 wt % of SA content, the proton conductivity reached 0.057 and 0.11 S/cm at 20 and 80 °C, respectively. The grafted/crosslinked P(VDF‐co‐CTFE)‐g‐PGMA/SA membranes exhibited good mechanical properties (>400 MPa of Young's modulus) and high thermal stability (up to 300 °C), as determined by a universal testing machine (UTM) and TGA, respectively. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Maleic anhydride (MAn) was grafted onto the low molecular weight esters methyl decanoate (MD) and methyl 2‐ethylhexanoate (MEH) using the free‐radical initiators Lupersol‐101 and ‐130; the esters were used as model compounds for the copolymer poly(ethylene‐co‐methyl acrylate). The grafted products in both cases were isolated from the unreacted ester and were subjected to extensive analysis using spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques. Analysis of the grafted material indicated the presence of one or more succinic anhydride (SAn) residues grafted to the ester. In the case of the multiply grafted material it has been established conclusively by 13C‐NMR using 2,3‐13C2 labeled MAn that the multiple grafts exist as single units. A limited number of grafting experiments was performed on the copolymer in the melt and the graft‐modified copolymer was characterized spectroscopically. Single graft units were observed. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 37: 1609–1618, 1999  相似文献

Degradable, amphiphilic graft copolymers of poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐graft‐poly(ethylene oxide), PCL‐g‐PEO, were synthesized via a grafting onto strategy taking advantage of the ketones presented along the backbone of the statistical copolymer poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐co‐(2‐oxepane‐1,5‐dione), (PCL‐co‐OPD). Through the formation of stable ketoxime ether linkages, 3 kDa PEO grafts and p‐methoxybenzyl side chains were incorporated onto the polyester backbone with a high degree of fidelity and efficiency, as verified by NMR spectroscopies and GPC analysis (90% grafting efficiency in some cases). The resulting block graft copolymers displayed significant thermal differences, specifically a depression in the observed melting transition temperature, Tm, in comparison with the parent PCL and PEO polymers. These amphiphilic block graft copolymers undergo self‐assembly in aqueous solution with the P(CL‐co‐OPD‐co‐(OPD‐g‐PEO)) polymer forming spherical micelles and a P(CL‐co‐OPD‐co‐(OPD‐g‐PEO)‐co‐(OPD‐gpMeOBn)) forming cylindrical or rod‐like micelles, as observed by transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new amphiphilic diblock copolymer containing an ionomer segment, poly[(4‐vinylbenzyl triethyl ammonium bromide)‐co‐(4‐methylstyrene)‐co‐(4‐bromomethylstyrene)]‐b‐polyisobutene [poly(4‐VBTEAB)‐b‐PIB], was synthesized by the chemical modification of poly(4‐methylstyrene)‐b‐polyisobutene [poly(4‐MSt)‐b‐PIB]. First, the 4‐methylstyrene moiety in poly(4‐MSt)‐b‐PIB was brominated with azobisisobutyronitrile as an initiator at 60 °C in CCl4, and then the highly reactive benzyl bromide groups were ionized by a reaction with triethylamine in a toluene/isopropyl alcohol (80/20 v/v) mixture at about 85 °C to produce the ionomer diblock copolymer poly(4‐VBTEAB)‐b‐PIB. The solubility of the ionomer block copolymer was quite different from that of the corresponding poly[(4‐methylstyrene)‐co‐(4‐bromomethylstyrene)]‐b‐polyisobutene {poly[(4‐MSt)‐co‐(4‐BrMSt)]‐b‐PIB}. Transmission electron microscopy observations demonstrated that all three diblock copolymers had microphase‐separation structures in which polyisobutene (PIB) domains existed in the continuous phase of the poly(4‐methylstyrene) segment or its derivative segment matrix. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis measurements showed that poly[(4‐MSt)‐co‐(4‐BrMSt)]‐b‐PIB had two glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's), ?56 °C for the PIB segment and 62 °C for the poly[(4‐MSt)‐co‐(4‐BrMSt)] domain, whereas poly(4‐VBTEAB)‐b‐PIB showed one Tg at ?8 °C of the PIB domain; Tg of the poly[(4‐vinylbenzyl triethyl ammonium bromide)‐co‐(4‐methylstyrene)‐co‐(4‐bromomethylstyrene)] domain was not observable because of the strong ionic interactions resulting in a higher Tg and a retention of modulus up to 124 °C. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (HMSNs) grafted with a photo‐responsive copolymer containing coumarin groups were successfully prepared. With uniform polystyrene nanoparticles and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide correspondingly as the template of core and channel, HMSNs were made from tetraethyloxysilane in alkalic condition. Epoxy groups were introduced onto the outer surface of HMSNs with γ‐(2,3‐epoxypropoxy)propyltrimethoxysilane and converted into azido groups with sodium azide, resulting in azido‐functionalized HMSNs (azido‐HMSNs). Meanwhile, single‐electron transfer‐living radical copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 7‐(2‐methacryloyloxy)‐4‐methylcoumarin (CMA) with propargyl 2‐bromoisobutyrate as the initiator produced alkynyl‐capped P(MMA‐co‐CMA) [alkynyl‐P(MMA‐co‐CMA)]. Finally, photo‐responsive HMSNs grafted with P(MMA‐co‐CMA) [HMSN‐g‐P(MMA‐co‐CMA)] was achieved through the click reaction between azido‐HMSNs and alkynyl‐P(MMA‐co‐CMA). Different techniques such as transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermal gravimetric analysis confirmed the successful preparation of the resultant hybrid nanoparticles and their intermediates. Because of its hollow core, mesoporous shell channels and light responsiveness, the coumarin‐modified HMSNs would be an interesting nano‐vehicle for guest molecules. Thus, the loading and release of pyrene with HMSN‐g‐P(MMA‐co‐CMA) was studied. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2013 , 51, 3791–3799  相似文献

Water‐soluble poly(ester‐carbonate) having pendent amino and carboxylic groups on the main‐chain carbon is reported for the first time. This article describes the melt ring‐opening/condensation reaction of trans‐4‐hydroxy‐N‐benzyloxycarbonyl‐L ‐proline (N‐CBz‐Hpr) with 5‐methyl‐5‐benzyloxycarbonyl‐1,3‐dioxan‐2‐one (MBC) at a wide range of molar fractions. The influence of reaction conditions such as catalyst concentration, polymerization time, and temperature on the number average molecular weight (Mn) and molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) of the copolymers was investigated. The polymerizations were carried out in bulk at 110 °C with 3 wt % stannous octoate as a catalyst for 16 h. The poly(ester‐carbonate)s obtained were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, and gel permeation chromatography. The copolymers synthesized exhibited moderate molecular weights (Mn = 6000–14,700 g mol?1) with reasonable molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn = 1.11–2.23). The values of the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of the copolymers depended on the molar fractions of cyclic carbonate. When the MBC content decreased from 76 to 12 mol %, the Tg increased from 16 to 48 °C. The relationship between the poly(N‐CBz‐Hpr‐co‐MBC) Tg and the compositions was in approximation with the Fox equation. In vitro degradation of these poly(N‐CBz‐Hpr‐co‐MBC)s was evaluated from weight‐loss measurements and the change of Mn and Mw/Mn. Debenzylation of 3 by catalytic hydrogenation led to the corresponding linear poly(ester‐carbonate), 4 , with pendent amino and carboxylic groups. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis, characterization, and ring‐opening polymerization of a new cyclic carbonate monomer containing an allyl ester moiety, 5‐methyl‐5‐allyloxycarbonyl‐1,3‐dioxan‐2‐one (MAC), was performed for the first time. MAC was synthesized in five steps in good yield beginning from the starting material, 2,2‐bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid. Subsequent polymerization and copolymerizations of the new cyclic carbonate with rac‐lactide (rac‐LA) and ?‐caprolactone (CL) were attempted. Rac‐LA copolymerized well with MAC, but CL copolymerizations produced insoluble products. Oligomeric macroinitiators of MAC and rac‐LA were synthesized from stannous ethoxide, and both macroinitiators were used for the controlled ring‐opening polymerization of rac‐LA. The polymerization kinetics were examined by monitoring the disappearance of the characteristic C? O ring stretch of the monomer at 1240 cm?1 with real‐time in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Postpolymerization oxidation reactions were conducted to epoxidize the unsaturated bonds of the MAC‐functionalized polymers. Epoxide‐containing polymers may allow further organic transformations with various nucleophiles, such as amines, alcohols, and carboxylic acids. NMR was used for microstructure identification of the polymers, and size exclusion chromatography and differential scanning calorimetry were used to characterize the new functionalized poly(ester‐carbonates). © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The volume phase transition of nonionic hydrogels was controlled with a very small amount of variation (pinpoint variation) of the side chains far from the main chain. The copolymer hydrogels poly(methacryloyl‐alanine methyl ester‐co‐methacryloyl‐alanine ethyl ester) [poly(MA‐Ala‐OMe‐co‐MA‐Ala‐OEt)] and poly(methacryloyl‐alanine alkylamide‐co‐methacryloyl‐alanine ethyl ester) [poly(MA‐Ala‐NR2co‐MA‐Ala‐OEt)] were studied to investigate how pinpoint variation controls the volume phase transition. All copolymer hydrogels showed a volume phase transition from a swollen phase to a collapsed phase at a definite MA‐Ala‐OEt content at a specific temperature. The MA‐Ala‐OEt content at the midpoint of the transition linearly decreased with elevation of the temperature, and the decrease was larger for poly(MA‐Ala‐OMe‐co‐MA‐Ala‐OEt) than for poly(MA‐Ala‐NR2co‐MA‐Ala‐OEt). These results suggest that the association of the side chains controlling the swelling character of the hydrogels depends on the interacting ester–ester or ester–amide groups, and the former is larger than the latter. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this study, an equimolar mixture of oxanorbornenyl‐anthracene (ONB‐anthracene), oxanorbornenyl‐bromide (ONB‐Br), and oxanorbornenyl tosylate (ONB‐OTs) was polymerized via ring opening metathesis polymerization using the first generation Grubbs' catalyst in CH2Cl2 at room temperature to form poly(ONB‐anthracene‐co‐ONB‐Br‐co‐ONB‐OTs)10 copolymer as a main backbone. Next, this main backbone was sequentially clicked with a furan protected maleimide‐terminated poly(methyl methacrylate), 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy‐terminated poly(ethylene glycol), and alkyne‐terminated poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL20‐alkyne) via Diels–Alder, nitroxide radical coupling, and copper‐catalyzed azide‐alkyne cycloaddition, respectively, to yield a poly(ONB‐g‐PMMA‐co‐ONB‐g‐PEG‐co‐ONB‐g‐PCL)10 heterograft brush copolymer © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The phase behavior of ternary poly‐(2‐vinylpyridine) (P2VPy)/poly‐(N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone) (PVP)/bis‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)methane (BHPM) blends was studied. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic examinations demonstrated that BHPM interacts with P2VPy and PVP through hydrogen‐bonding interactions. The addition of a sufficiently large amount of BHPM transformed an opaque blend with two glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) to a transparent single‐Tg blend. Scanning electron microscopic studies showed that the transparent single‐Tg blend is micro‐phase‐separated at a scale of about 30 nm. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
