A series of main‐chain, thermotropic, liquid‐crystalline (LC), hydrogen‐bonded polymers or self‐assembled structures based on 4,4′‐bipyridyl as a hydrogen‐bond acceptor and aliphatic dicarboxylic acids, such as adipic and sebacic acids, as hydrogen‐bond donors were prepared by a slow evaporation technique from a pyridine solution and were characterized for their thermotropic, LC properties with a number of experimental techniques. The homopolymer of 4,4′‐bipyridyl with adipic acid exhibited high‐order and low‐order smectic phases, and that with sebacic acid exhibited only a high‐order smectic phase. Like the homopolymer with adipic acid, the two copolymers of 4,4′‐bipyridyl with adipic and sebacic acids (75/25 and 25/75) also exhibited two types of smectic phases. In contrast, the copolymer of 4,4′‐bipyridyl with adipic and sebacic acids (50/50), like the homopolymer with sebacic acid, exhibited only one high‐order smectic phase. Each of them, including the copolymers, had a broad temperature range of LC phases (36–51 °C). The effect of copolymerization for these hydrogen‐bonded polymers on the thermotropic properties was examined. Generally, copolymerization increased the temperature range of LC phases for these polymers, as expected, with a larger decrease in the crystal‐to‐LC transition than in the LC‐to‐isotropic transition. Additionally, it neither suppressed the formation of smectic phases nor promoted the formation of a nematic phase in these hydrogen‐bonded polymers, as usually observed in many thermotropic LC polymers. The thermal transitions for all of them, measured by differential scanning calorimetry, were well below their decomposition temperatures, as measured by thermogravimetric analysis, which were in the temperature range of 193–210 °C. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two H‐bonded acceptor (H‐acceptor) homopolymers 14 and 17 were successfully prepared by polymerization of fluorescent pyridyl monomers PBT and PBOT ( 12 and 13 ), which were synthesized via Sonogashira coupling and Wittig‐Horner reactions. To increase the glass transition temperatures as well as reduce the π‐π stacking of the photoluminescent (PL) H‐acceptor copolymers and their H‐bonded polymer complexes, fluorescent monomers 12 and 13 were copolymerized with N‐vinylcarbazole monomer CAZ (23) to produce H‐acceptor copolymers 15–16 and 18–19 . Supramolecular side‐chain and crosslinking polymers (i.e., H‐bonded polymer complexes) obtained by complexation of light‐emitting H‐acceptor polymers 14–19 with various proton donor (H‐donor) acids 20–22 were further characterized by DSC, POM, FTIR, XRD, and PL measurements. The mesomorphic properties can be tuned from the nematic phase in H‐acceptor homopolymers ( 14 and 17 ) to the tilted smectic C phase in their H‐bonded polymer complexes ( 14/20–21 and 17/20–22 ) by the introduction of H‐donor acids (20–22). Moreover, the PL properties of light‐emitting H‐acceptor polymers can be adjusted not only by the central structures of the conjugated pyridyl cores but also by their surrounding nonfluorescent H‐donor acids. In general, redder shifts of PL emissions in H‐bonded polymer complexes occurred when the light‐emitting H‐acceptor polymers were complexed with H‐donors having smaller pKa values. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We synthesized a series of amphiphilic mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystalline (LC) polymers with a biphenyl side‐chain mesogen containing a carboxylic acid group on one side and an octyloxy group on the other, and the number of methylene units between the biphenyl core and the exterior carboxylic acid group was varied to adjust the mesophases and the amphiphilic nature. The polymers were obtained through conventional radical polymerizations and characterized by a combination of different techniques such as thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, polarized light microscopy, and X‐ray scattering. The results revealed that the polymer without any methylene spacer, POBP‐0C, did not exhibit LC properties while POBP‐1C (n = 1) and POBP‐7C (n = 7) formed double layer smectic A (SA) phases. The hydrogen bonding among the carboxylic acid groups and the segregation between the carboxylic acid groups and the alky chains played important roles in forming the mesophases. In addition, the solution self‐assembly behaviors were also preliminarily investigated through the fluorescent probe technique and transmission electron microscopy, and vesicles with uniform sizes were observed. The weak hydrophilicity and large degree of freedom of the carboxylic acid group and the relative rigidity of the polymer chain due to the “jacketing” effect were responsible for the formation of the structures. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work focuses on the design, synthesis, and characterization of a series of mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystalline polymers (MJLCPs), poly(alkyl 4′‐(octyloxy)‐2‐vinylbiphenyl‐4‐carboxylate) (pVBP(m,8), m = 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12). For the first time, we realized asymmetric substitutions in the mesogens of MJLCPs. The polymers obtained by conventional free radical polymerization were investigated in detail by a combination of various techniques, such as differential scanning calorimetry, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, and polarized light microscopy. Our results showed that all the polymers were thermally stable, and their glass transition temperatures decreased when m increased. The liquid crystalline (LC) phases that developed at high temperatures and disappeared at low temperatures were strongly dependent on the difference in lengths of alkyl groups on the 4 and 4′ substitution positions of the side‐chain biphenyl. While polymer pVBP(1,8) was not liquid crystalline, columnar liquid crystalline phases were observed for all other pVBP(m,8) (m = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12) polymers. Polymer pVBP(8,8) showed a tetragonal columnar nematic liquid crystalline phase, and the other LC polymers exhibited columnar nematic phases. In additions, the smaller the difference in the lengths of the terminal alkyls, the easier the development of the liquid crystalline phase. Birefringence measurements showed that solution‐cast polymer films exhibited moderately high positive birefringence values, indicating potential applications as optical compensation films for liquid crystal displays. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Stereospecific polymerizations of functionalized acetylenes were successfully performed using a Rh complex as the catalyst and triethylamine as a base yielding poly(3,4,5‐tridodecyloxyphenylacetylene) ( Poly5 ) and poly[3,4,5‐tris((S)‐3,7‐dimethyloctyloxy)phenylacetylene] ( Poly6 ). Poly5 and Poly6 are liquid crystalline with presumably a bilayer‐type architecture in which the mesogens are arranged in an antiparallel overlapping interdigitated manner. Poly6 showed unusual thermal stereomutation in solution in a very narrow temperature range.  相似文献

In this article, we report the synthesis and characterization of a new end‐on side‐chain liquid crystalline polymer (SCLCP), poly[4‐(4′‐alkoxyphenyloxymethylene)styrene] [denoted as Poly(n‐POMS), where n is the carbon number of the alkyl tail, n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16], with the flexible rod‐like mesogenic side‐chain directly attached to the polymer backbone without flexible spacer. The polymer was obtained by using free radical polymerization. The chemical structures of Poly(n‐POMS) and the corresponding monomer were characterized using various techniques with satisfactory analysis data. A combination analysis of differential scanning calorimetry, polarized light microscopy, small angle X‐ray scattering, and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction has been conducted to investigate the phase behavior of Poly(n‐POMS). Poly(2‐POMS), Poly(4‐POMS), and Poly(6‐POMS) are amorphous. Poly(8‐POMS) develops partially into the liquid crystal phase, and Poly(12‐POMS) and Poly(16‐POMS) self‐assembly into the smectic A (SmA) phase. Upon increasing temperature, the phase transition of Poly(16‐POMS) follows the sequence of SmA1 ? SmA2 ? isotropic (I), which may be attributed to the conformation isomerization of the flexible rod‐like mesogens. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

Novel supramolecular side‐chain polymers were constructed by complexation of proton acceptor (H‐acceptor) polymers, i.e., side‐chain conjugated polymers P1–P2 containing pyridyl pendants, with low‐band‐gap proton donor (H‐donor) dyes S1–S4 (bearing terminal cyanoacrylic acids) in a proper molar ratio. Besides unique mesomorphic properties confirmed by DSC and XRD results, the H‐bonds of supramolecular side‐chain structures formed by pyridyl H‐acceptors and cyanoacrylic acid H‐donors were also confirmed by FTIR measurements. H‐donor dyes S1–S4 in solid films exhibited broad absorption peaks located in the range of 471–490 nm with optical band‐gaps of 1.99–2.14 eV. Furthermore, H‐bonded polymer complexes P1/S1–P1/S4 and P2/S1–P2/S4 exhibited broad absorption peaks in the range of 440–462 nm with optical band‐gaps of 2.11–2.25 eV. Under 100 mW/cm2 of AM 1.5 white‐light illumination, the bulk heterojunction polymer solar cell (PSC) devices containing an active layer of H‐bonded polymer complexes P1/S1–P1/S4 and P2/S1–P2/S4 (as electron donors) mixed with [6,6]‐phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (i.e., PCBM, as an electron acceptor) in the weight ratio of 1:1 were investigated. The PSC device containing H‐bonded polymer complex P1/S3 mixed with PCBM (1:1 w/w) gave the best preliminary result with an overall power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 0.50%, a short‐circuit current of 3.17 mA/cm2, an open‐circuit voltage of 0.47 V, and a fill factor of 34%. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The solution‐phase behavior of three main‐chain viologen polymers, which are composed of isomeric xylyl units and triflimide as a counterion, was studied in methanol, dimethylformamide, acetonitrile, and dimethyl sulfoxide as solvents microscopically under crossed polarizers. Each of them exhibited a lyotropic lamellar phase in both polar protic and aprotic solvents. Their C* for the formation of biphasic solutions (1–5 wt %) and concentrations (20–30 wt %) for the lyotropic solutions in methanol was much lower than those in polar aprotic solvents (20–71 and 60–81 wt %, respectively). Their high solubility, high C* for the formation of biphasic solutions, and high concentrations for the formation of lyotropic solutions in polar aprotic solvents were related to the significant reduction of strong ionic interactions between triflimide and 4,4′‐bipyridinium ions in each of these viologen polymers. They were the first examples of viologen polymers that exhibited a lyotropic phase in polar aprotic solvents. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three kinds of chiral saccharide‐containing liquid crystalline (LC) acetylenic monomers were prepared by click reaction between 2‐azidoethyl‐2,3,4,6‐tetraacetyl‐β‐D ‐galactopyranoside and 1‐biphenylacetylene 4‐alkynyloxybenzoate. The obtained monomers were polymerized by WCl6‐Ph4Sn to form three side‐chain LC polyacetylenes containing 1‐[2‐(2,3,4,6‐tetraacetyl‐β‐D ‐galactopyranos‐1‐yl)‐ethyl]‐1H‐[1,2,3]‐triazol‐4′‐biphenyl 4‐alkynyloxybenzoate side groups. All monomers and polymers show a chiral smectic A phase. Self‐assembled hiearchical superstructures of the chiral saccharide‐containing LCs and LCPs in solution state were studied by field‐emission scanning electron microscopy. Because of the LC behavior, the LC molecules exhibit a high segregation strength for phase separation in dilute solution (THF/H2O = 1:9 v/v). The self‐assembled morphology of LC monomers was dependent upon the alkynyloxy chain length. Increasing the alkynyloxy chain length caused the self‐assembled morphology to change from a platelet‐like texture ( LC‐6 ) to helical twists morphology ( LC‐11 and LC‐12 ). Furthermore, the helical twist morphological structure can be aligned on the polyimide rubbed glass substrate to form two‐dimensional ordered helical patterns. In contrast to LC monomers, the LCP‐11 self‐assembled into much more complicate morphologies, including nanospheres and helical nanofibers. These nanofibers are evolved from the helical cables ornamented with entwining nanofibers upon natural evaporation of the solution in a mixture with a THF/methanol ratio of 3:7. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article reviews our work on the development and optimization of chiral, nonpolar media with large second‐order nonlinear optical responses. We show how molecular engineering, theory, and measurements can be used to optimize this promising class of nonlinear optical materials. We describe how supramolecular alignment into easily processable materials takes advantage of the relevant molecular hyperpolarizabilities. A wide variety of techniques can be used to fabricate bulk materials belonging to the chiral nonpolar symmetry groups, D and D2. The microscopic chromophore alignment schemes that optimize the nonlinear optical response in such materials are deduced from general symmetry considerations for both molecules and bulk. We also speculate on the possible applications of such materials as image‐plane modulators. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 41: 2744–2754, 2003  相似文献

A novel side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polyimide (SLCPI) was prepared via copolycondensation from 3,5‐diamino‐benzonic‐4′‐biphenyl ester, 4,4′‐diamino‐ biphenyl ether, and 3,3′,4,4′‐oxydiphthalic dianhydride. The energy‐minimized structure and liquid crystallinity of SLCPI were investigated by molecular modeling, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide‐angle X‐ray scattering, and polarized optical microscopy, respectively. The results indicated that this polyimide (PI) with side‐chain mesogenic units exhibited a nematic NI phase. Because of the in situ self‐reinforcement of side‐chain mesogenic units, the improved tensile strength and modulus of PI films reached 270% and 300%, respectively. The coefficient of thermal expansion of films decreased by 40%. DSC and thermogravimetric analyses indicated that the phase‐transition temperature of SLCPI was above 240 °C, and the 5% weight‐loss temperature was above 520 °C. Moreover, copolycondensation of two diamines with dianhydride and incorporation of pendent mesogenic units diminished the regularity and symmetry of main chains; as a result, SLCPI exhibits good film processability. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report herein studies on the liquid crystalline behavior of a series of supramolecular materials that contain different ratios of two complementary symmetrically-substituted alkoxy-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene AA- and BB-type monomers. One monomer has thymine units placed at either end of the rigid mesogenic core, while the other has N6-(4-methoxybenzoyl)-adenine units placed on the ends. Differential scanning calorimetric and polarized optical microscopy studies have been carried out on these systems. These studies show that the material's behavior is strongly dependent on its thermal history. As a result, the materials can exhibit, on heating, either a liquid crystalline phase, a crystalline phase, or the coexistence of crystalline and liquid crystalline regions. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Rigid, helical polyisocyanodipeptides derived from alanine (PIAAs) that form lyotropic liquid‐crystalline (LC) phases in tetrachloroethane are presented. An investigation by optical microscopy between crossed polarizers demonstrated that PIAAs prepared by the polymerization of isocyanodipeptide monomers with an activated tetrakis isocyanide nickel(II) catalyst could form cholesteric LC phases in tetrachloroethane in concentrations between 18 and 30 wt %. Cholesteric LC phases that were formed in solutions of greater than 25 wt % displayed a reversal of the cholesteric helix upon annealing at 50 °C. Diastereomeric PIAA mixtures displayed cholesteric LC behavior only when the PIAAs had the same helix screw sense. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymers containing both cholesteric and thermochromic side groups were synthesized. Their chemical structures were confirmed with elemental analyses and Fourier transform infrared, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, and carbon‐13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. The mesogenic properties and phase behavior were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, polarizing optical microscopy, and X‐ray diffraction measurements. The effect of the concentration of dye side groups on the phase behavior of the polymers was examined. The polymers showed smectic or cholesteric phases. Those polymers containing less than 20 mol % dye groups had good solubility, reversible phase transitions, wider mesophase temperature ranges, and higher thermal stability. The experimental results demonstrated that the isotropization temperature and mesophase temperature ranges decreased with an increasing concentration of dye groups. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined azobenzene‐containing side‐chain liquid crystalline diblock copolymers composed of poly[6‐(4‐methoxy‐azobenzene‐4′‐oxy) hexyl methacrylate] (PMMAZO) and poly(γ‐benzyl‐L ‐glutamate) (PBLG) were synthesized by click reaction from alkyne‐ and azide‐functionalized homopolymers. The alkyne‐terminated PMMAZO homopolymers were synthesized by copper‐mediated atom transfer radical polymerization with a bromine‐containing alkyne bifunctional initiator, and the azido‐terminated PBLG homopolymers were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization of γ‐benzyl‐L ‐glutamate‐N‐carboxyanhydride in DMF at room temperature using an amine‐containing azide initiator. The thermotropic phase behavior of PMMAZO‐b‐PBLG diblock copolymers in bulk were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry and polarized light microscopy. The PMMAZO‐b‐PBLG diblock copolymers exhibited a smectic phase and a nematic phase when the weight fraction of PMMAZO block was more than 50%. Photoisomerization behavior of PMMAZO‐b‐PBLG diblock copolymers and the corresponding PMMAZO homopolymers in solid film and in solution were investigated using UV–vis. In solution, trans–cis isomerization of diblock copolymers was slower than that of the corresponding PMMAZO homopolymers. These results may provide guidelines for the design of effective photoresponsive anisotropic materials. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2013  相似文献

A set of poly[ω‐(4′‐cyano‐4‐biphenyloxy)alkyl‐1‐glycidylether]s were synthesized by the chemical modification of the corresponding poly(ω‐bromoalkyl‐1‐glycidylether)s with the sodium salt of 4‐cyano‐4′‐hydroxybiphenyl. New high‐molecular‐weight side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymers were obtained with excellent yield and almost quantitative degree of modification. All side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymers were rubbers soluble in tetrahydrofuran. The characterization by 1H and 13C NMR revealed no changes in the regioregular isotactic microstructure of the starting polymer and the absence of undesirable side reactions such as deshydrobromination. The liquid crystalline behavior was analyzed by DSC and polarized optical microscopy, and mesophase assignments were confirmed by X‐ray diffraction. Polymers that had alkyl spacers with n = 2 and 4 were nematic, those that had spacers with n = 6 and 8 were nematic cybotactic, and those that had longer spacers (n = 10 and 12) were smectic C and showed some crystallization of the side alkyl chains. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A dendritic monomer with bipolar side groups containing dendritic carbazole and oxadiazole structures was synthesized by a convergent strategy. The homopolymer was synthesized through a conventional radical polymerization. The number‐average molecular weight determined by gel permeation chromatography was 40,000 g/mol. Its 5% weight loss temperature was 358 °C. Its photophysical properties were studied in solution and in film. The photoluminescent emission peak of the film was at 408 nm, which had a blue shift of 9 nm compared with that of the tetrahydrofuran solution. And there was an energy transfer from oxadiazole to carbazole. The highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lower unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) levels calculated from cyclic voltammetry data were ‐5.55 and ‐2.52 eV, respectively, and the band gap was 3.03 eV, which suggested that the polymer had both hole‐ and electron‐transporting capabilities. The efficiencies of the single‐layer device based on this homopolymer were much higher than those of the same‐generation homopolymer without the oxadiazole moiety. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A set of high‐molecular‐weight, new, side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polyethers was obtained by chemical modification of poly(epichlorohydrin) with potassium 3,4,5‐tris[4‐(n‐dodecan‐1‐yloxy)benzyloxy]benzoate. The degree of modification depended on the reaction conditions and ranged from 39 to 58%. The highest value was an apparent modification plateau. NMR characterization indicated no side reactions of any kind (e.g., deshydrohalogenation). All random‐grafted copolymers had hexagonal columnar mesophases with the exception of the least modified copolymer, which had a nematic columnar mesophase. X‐ray diffraction experiments performed on mechanically oriented samples showed that tapered groups were tilted with respect to the column axes. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymers containing side‐chain terpyridine ligands of well‐defined architectures and controllable molecular weights and molecular weight distributions are reported. These polymers were synthesized by the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of a newly synthesized terpyridine monomer with three functional initiators. The obtained polymers were characterized with 1H NMR and gel permeation chromatography techniques. The efficiency of the ATRP technique and the overall control of the molecular characteristics of the polymers were demonstrated by a kinetic study of the polymerization reaction. Subsequently, the ruthenium(III)/ruthenium(II) complexation chemistry was employed for the attachment of bis(dodecyloxy)‐functionalized terpyridine moieties onto each side 2,2′:6′,2″‐terpyridine unit of the main polymeric backbone. Thus, the grafting approach was successfully combined with the metal–ligand coordination chemistry for the preparation of highly soluble polymeric complexes. The resulting complexes were fully characterized by means of 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography, and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Narrow fractions of a side‐chain acrylate oligomer/polymer with phenyl benzoate side chains are separated in a broad range of the degree of polymerization (7 ≤ Pw ≤ 149). An examination of the phase behavior of the obtained fractions has shown that only the longer macromolecules can form the two‐dimensional K (TDK) mesophase, whereas oligomers of a shorter main chain form the conventional nematic phase only. A critical Pw value has been observed to be necessary for the TDK mesophase formation. The temperatures and enthalpies of liquid‐crystalline phase transitions have been studied as a function of the molar mass, and the phase‐growth kinetics for the TDK phase have been studied with an Avrami treatment. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
