The sorption of carbon dioxide in glassy Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) films was studied by quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) at high pressures. Two thermal treatments, melted and quenched, were performed in PLA with two different L:D contents, 80:20 and 98:2, films and compared with a third thermal protocol, annealed, and used in a previous work. The results obtained show that for pressures higher than 2 MPa, the carbon dioxide solubility is larger in PLA 80:20 than in PLA 98:2, indicating that the L:D plays a dominant role on this property. The thermal treatments only affect the gas solubility in PLA 98:2. Sorption isotherms at temperatures 303, 313, and 323 K, below the glass transition temperature of the polymer, and pressures up to 5 MPa were measured and analyzed with three different models, the dual‐mode sorption model, the Flory–Huggins equation, and a modified dual‐mode sorption model where the Henry's law term was substituted by the Flory–Huggins equation. This last model performs especially well for CO2 in PLA 80:20, due to the convex upward curvature of the solubility isotherms for that system. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The sorption of carbon dioxide in poly(lactic acid) (PLA) was studied by quartz crystal microbalance at high pressures. To address the effect of the D isomer present in the polymer on the gas sorption, measurements were performed in PLA with two different L:D contents, 80:20 and 98:2. New data for the solubility of carbon dioxide in PLA 80:20 and PLA 98:2 over a temperature range from 303.2 to 323.2 K and up to 5 MPa are presented. The results obtained were correlated with the dual‐mode sorption model and the Flory‐Huggins equation. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 44: 1010–1019, 2006  相似文献

Experimental solubility and sorptive dilation data are reported for carbon dioxide and ethane in a crosslinked poly(ethylene oxide) (XLPEO) rubbery copolymer. Five different temperatures (253 ≤ T(K) ≤ 308) were considered, with a maximum gas pressure of 2.09 MPa (20.6 atm). The polymer was prepared by photopolymerization of a solution containing 70 wt % poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate (PEGMEA) and 30 wt % poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA). Sorption isotherms were described by the Flory‐Huggins model. For each gas, the Flory‐Huggins interaction parameter was a decreasing function of temperature and did not show a composition dependence. Dilation and sorption data were combined to calculate the partial molar volume (PMV) of the gases in the polymer, which was an increasing function of temperature. Based on a comparison with literature data for a XLPEO homopolymer prepared from pure PEGDA over the same range of operating conditions, an effect of the network composition on both gas solubility and PMV was found. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The solubilities of He, H2, N2, O2, CO2, CH4, C2H6, C3H8, and n‐C4H10 were determined at 35°C and pressures up to 27 atmospheres in a systematic series of phase separated polyether–polyamide segmented block copolymers containing either poly(ethylene oxide) [PEO] or poly(tetramethylene oxide) [PTMEO] as the rubbery polyether phase and nylon 6 [PA6] or nylon 12 [PA12] as the hard polyamide phase. Sorption isotherms are linear for the least soluble gases (He, H2, N2, O2, and CH4), convex to the pressure axis for more soluble penetrants (CO2, C3H8, and n‐C4H10) and slightly concave to the pressure axis for ethane. These polymers exhibit high CO2/N2 and CO2/H2 solubility selectivity. This property appears to derive mainly from high carbon dioxide solubility, which is ascribed to the strong affinity of the polar ether linkages for CO2. As the amount of the polyether phase in the copolymers increases, gas solubility increases. The solubility of all gases is higher in polymers with less polar constituents, PTMEO and PA12, than in polymers with more polar PEO and PA6 units. CO2/N2 and CO2/H2 solubility selectivity, however, are higher in polymers with higher concentrations of polar repeat units. The sorption data are complemented with physical characterization (differential scanning calorimetry, elemental analysis, and wide angle X‐ray diffraction) of the various block copolymers. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Random copolymers of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN) were synthesized by melt condensation. In a series of thin, solvent cast films of varying PEN content, acetone diffusivity and solubility were determined at 35°C and an acetone pressure of 5.4 cm Hg. The kinetics of acetone sorption in the copolymer films are well described by a Fickian model. Both solubility and diffusivity decrease with increasing PEN content. The acetone diffusion coefficient decreases 93% from PET to PET/85PEN, a copolymer in which 85 weight percent of the dimethyl terephthalate in PET has been replace by dimethyl naphthalate 2,6-dicarboxylate. The acetone solubility coefficient in the amorphous regions of the polymer decreases by approximately a factor of two over the same composition range. The glass/rubber transition temperatures of these materials rise monotonically with increasing PEN content. Copolymers containing 20 to 80 wt % PEN are amorphous. Samples with <20% or >80% PEN contain measurable levels of crystallinity. Estimated fractional free volume in the amorphous regions of these samples is lower in the copolymers than in either of the homopolymers. Relative free volume as probed by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) decreases systematically with increasing PEN content. Acetone diffusion coefficients correlate well with PALS results. Infrared spectroscopy suggests an increase in the fraction of ethylene glycol units in the trans conformation in the amorphous phase as the concentration of PEN in the copolymer increases. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The objective of this work is to study the gas/vapor sorption in poly(lactic acid) (PLA) with a 98:2 (l:d) ratio using a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). For that purpose, the sorption of carbon dioxide, ethylene and water vapor in poly(lactic acid) (PLA) with a 98:2 (l:d) ratio, in temperature range from 283 to 313 K and up to atmospheric pressure was measured. The measured isotherms indicate that the sorption mechanism is sorbate dependent, since carbon dioxide and ethylene seem to have predominantly a Langmuir type of mechanism while water is predominantly Henry controlled. Two temperature protocols were used and only ethylene sorption is affected by them. Comparisons with previously measured gas sorption data in PLA 80:20 using the same temperature protocol indicate that the l:d ratio plays a dominant role in gas/vapor sorption in PLA.  相似文献

Interval sorption kinetics of acetone in solvent cast films of random poly(ethylene terephthalate)-co-(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PET-co-PEN) are reported at 35°C and at acetone pressures ranging from 0 to 7.3 cm Hg. Polymer composition is varied systematically from 0% to 50% poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate). Equilibrium sorption is well described by the dual-mode sorption model. Interval sorption kinetics are described using a two-stage model that incorporates both Fickian diffusion and protracted polymer structural relaxation. The incorporation of low levels of PEN into PET significantly reduces the excess free volume associated with the glassy state and, for these interval acetone sorption experiments in ∼ 5 μm-thick films, decreases the fraction of acetone uptake controlled by penetrant-induced polymer structural relaxation. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This article describes the solubility of carbon dioxide, ethylene and propane in 1‐octene based polyethylene of 0.94, 0.92, 0.904, and 0.87 densities. The isotherms obtained in the gas sorption experimental device display a sorption behavior similar to that of glassy polymers. We apply the dual model to semicrystalline polymers assuming that Henry's sites are related to the amorphous phase, which decreases when the crystallinity percentage increases, whereas the surface of the crystalline phase acts as a Langmuir site with higher gas‐polymer affinity than glassy polymers. The good concordance of the calculated kD values, using the Flory‐Huggins theory of polymer diluent mixtures, with the experimental results suggest that Henry's gas sorption fulfills this theory and, therefore, it may be a suitable way to estimate polymer‐gas enthalpic interactions. Particularly, the variation of kD with the crystallinity fraction is exponential and the proportionality of the total sorption with the amorphous content seems only apparent. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Pure gas permeation and sorption experiments were carried out for the gases ethylene, ethane, propylene and propane using polyimides based on 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride (6FDA). Composite membranes and free films were used. Experiments were performed at 308 K and feed pressures up to 17 atm for ethylene and ethane and 9 atm for propylene and propane. Mixed gas permeation experiments were carried out with 50 : 50 olefin/paraffin feed mixtures. For all investigated polyimides, the ideal ethylene/ethane separation factor ranged between 3.3 and 4.4 and the ideal propylene/propane separation factor ranged between 10 and 16 at a feed pressure of 3.8 atm and 308 K. In mixed gas permeation experiments, up to 20% lower selectivity was found for the ethylene/ethane separation and up to 50% reduced selectivity for the propylene/propane separation compared to the ideal selectivity. The influence of feed temperature on separation and permeation properties will be discussed based on pure gas permeability data at 298 and 308 K.  相似文献

This work reports sorption processes of oxygen, carbon dioxide, methane, ethylene, and propylene in films of both vulcanized natural rubber and vulcanized rubber–regenerated cellulose composites. The curves representing the pressure dependence of the concentration of carbon dioxide in the composites clearly exhibit a slight concavity with respect to the abscissa axis as a result of adsorption processes taking place in Langmuir sites located in the glassy cellulose component. Adsorption processes are also detected in the sorption curves of ethylene at low pressures. The concavity with respect to the ordinate axis of the curve concentration of propylene versus pressure at high pressure is pretty well described by the Flory‐Huggins formalism. The solubilities of the other gases mainly obey Henry's behavior, adsorption processes in the glassy component being in most cases negligible. Values of the interaction χ parameter for gas–natural rubber and gas–natural rubber composites are obtained from the comparison of the experimental solubility coefficients with those predicted by the Flory‐Huggins theory. The theory suggests that Henry's constant is a linear function of the boiling temperature of the gases. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 43: 2131–2140, 2005  相似文献

For as‐extruded amorphous and biaxially orientated polyester films based on poly(ethylene terephthalate), poly(ethylene naphthalate), and copolymers containing poly(ethylene terephthalate) and poly(ethylene naphthalate) moieties, permeability, diffusion, and solubility coefficients are interpreted in terms of chain mobility. The influence of polymer morphology is determined by comparison of the data for as‐extruded amorphous sheets and materials produced with different biaxial draw ratios. The crystallinities of the samples were assessed using differential scanning calorimetry and density measurements. Changes in mobility at a molecular level were investigated using dielectric spectroscopy and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The study, in conjunction with our earlier work, leads to the conclusion that the key to understanding differences in gas transport is the difference in local chain motions rather than in free volume. This was illustrated by the permeability results for He, Ar, N2, and O2 in the range of polyesters. However, the permeability of CO2 was found to require alternative explanations because of polymer–penetrant interactions. For biaxially oriented samples, the differences in diffusivity are not only due to differences in local chain motions, but also additional constraints resulting from the increased crystallinity and chain rigidity—which also act to hinder segmental mobility. The effectiveness of the reduction in permeability in the biaxially oriented films is consequently determined by the ability of the polymer chains to effectively align and form crystalline structures. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Water sorption into polylactide (PLA) and polylactide‐montmorillonite (PLLA‐MONT) composites containing 5 wt % of montmorillonite (MONT) under different heat treatment conditions was studied using the quartz crystal microbalance/heat conduction calorimetry (QCM/HCC) technique. Results showed that water sorption in neat polymer films and composite films increased with heat treatment temperature up to 120 °C. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to measure the glass‐transition temperature and isothermal crystallization kinetics of all samples. The mobility of the amorphous domain in all samples increased with heat treatment temperature, indicated by the decrease in glass‐transition temperature. PLA composites crystallized at a much faster rate than neat PLA did because MONT acted as a nucleating agent. Under the same heat treatment condition, water sorption in PLLA‐MONT composites was always higher than that in neat PLA due to the presence of the hydrophilic hydroxyl groups on the surface of MONT particles. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Water sorption and transport properties for a series of miscible blends of hydrophobic bisphenol A polysulfone and hydrophilic poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) are reported. Study was restricted to blends that remained homogeneous after exposure to liquid water. The solubility of water in the blend films increased with increasing hydrophilic polymer content. Equilibrium sorption isotherms show dual-mode behavior at low activities and swelling behavior at high activities. The sorption kinetics are generally Fickian for blends containing 20% poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) or less, but exhibit two-stage behavior in blends containing 40% poly(vinyl pyrrolidone). Diffusion coefficients extrapolated to zero concentration decrease with increasing poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) content, owing to a decrease in the fractional free volume. However, the diffusion coefficient becomes a greater function of activity as the composition of hydrophilic polymer in the blend is increased, due to plasticization of the material by large levels of sorbed water. Permeability coefficients generally decrease with increasing poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) content for blends containing 20% poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) or less because the decrease in the diffusion coefficient is greater than the increase in the solubility coefficient. Blends containing 40% poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) have permeability coefficients greater than those of polysulfone due to high water solubility. The permeability coefficients depend on water concentration in approximately the same way for all blends. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys, 35: 655–674, 1997  相似文献

Water sorption and transport properties for a series of homogeneous blends of hydrophobic polyethersulfone and hydrophilic polyethyloxazoline are reported. Only blends that remained homogeneous after exposure to liquid water were studied in detail. Equilibrium solubility of water in the blend films increases with increasing hydrophilic polymer content. For all materials, equilibrium sorption isotherms show dual-mode behavior at low water vapor activities and swelling behavior at high activities. The sorption/desorption kinetics for PES are generally Fickian, but two-stage behavior is evident in blends containing 10 and 20% polyethyloxazoline. Diffusion coefficients decrease with increasing polyethyloxazoline content, owing to a decrease in the fractional free volume. For all materials, the diffusion coefficient shows a positive dependence on water vapor activity or concentration due to plasticization of the material by high levels of sorbed water, but it becomes a greater function of activity as the composition of hydrophilic polymer in the blend is increased. Since the decrease in the diffusion coefficient is greater than the increase in the solubility coefficient, the permeability coefficient decreases with increasing hydrophilic polymer content. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A set of new block copolyimides containing fluorenyl cardo moieties (FR) in the polyimide blocks and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) sequences has been prepared using the two‐step method of polyimide synthesis. The combination of both moieties led to novel copolyimides with good solubility in a variety of solvents, which could easily be processed into films. Copolyimides with PEO content from 30 to 56 wt % were amorphous, showed good mechanical properties, and absorbed less water than other PEO‐containing polyimides previously reported. Copolyimides with higher PEO content (60 and 65%) showed crystallinity and yielded soft films. All of the copolymers showed two glass transition temperatures, the first one around ?25 °C attributed to the PEO segments, and the second one at much higher temperature, which corresponded to the polyimide domains. The thermal degradation occurred in two steps, the first one being associated with the degradation of the PEO segments and the second one with the generalized aromatic polyimide decomposition. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The sorption of compressed carbon dioxide and methane in a series of all‐aromatic poly(etherimide) (PEI) thin films is presented. The polymer films are derived from the reactions between an arylether diamine (P1) and four different dianhydrides [3,3′,4,4′‐oxydiphthalic dianhydride (ODPA), 3,3′,4,4′ biphenyltetra‐carboxylic dianhydride (BPDA), 3,3′,4,4′‐benzo‐phenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), and pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA)] that have been selected to systematically change the flexibility of the polymer backbone, the segmental mobility, and the nonequilibrium excess free volume (EFV) of the polymer. The EFV, gas sorption capacities, and sorption‐ and temperature‐induced dynamic changes in film thickness and refractive index have been investigated by spectroscopic ellipsometry. The sorption capacity depends to a great extent on the PEI backbone composition. PMDA‐P1 shows the highest carbon dioxide sorption, combined with the lowest sorption selectivity because of the predominant sorption of methane in the EFV. For ODPA‐P1, the highest sorption selectivity is obtained, while it shows little long‐term relaxations at carbon dioxide pressures up to 25 bar. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. The modification of polyethylene by the grafting of poly(acrylic acid) onto the surface of one of the faces of low‐density polyethylene films with UV radiation is reported. The transport of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, ethane, ethylene, propane, and argon across surface‐modified films containing 3.7% poly(acrylic acid) has been investigated at several temperatures. The layer of poly(acrylic acid) grafted onto the surface of one of the faces of the films reduces the permeability coefficient of the gases by a factor of about 1/6. The sharp drop in the gas permeability as a result of the poly(acrylic acid) layer may arise either from the formation of ordered structures of the grafted chains or from the development of highly crosslinked structures. The values of the polymer–gas enthalpic interaction parameter for the modified film are higher than those for the unmodified one. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The diffusion and permeation properties of liquid water through different polar and nonpolar polymers and copolymers were studied with a highly sensitive permeameter. The transient permeation fluxes through the polar polymer films could be fitted well only with an exponential equation for the diffusivity concentration dependence; this empirical exponential equation represented the diffusion plasticization effect of water on the materials. For the hydrophobic polyolefins, this exponential equation was no longer valid, and another form of the equation was empirically found to account for the reduction of the water diffusivity with the extent of the permeation. Such a negative plasticization effect might be attributed to the formation of water clusters in the polyolefins. The values of the diffusion coefficient of water in the dry polar polymers were smaller than those in dry polyolefins, but the opposite behavior was found for the permeability because it was much more favorable for water sorption in the polar polymers than in the hydrophobic polyolefins. For the ethylene–vinylacetate copolymers, the plasticization effect of water on its own diffusion was negative for the sample with a low vinyl acetate (VA) content; it became nil at 19 wt % VA and positive at higher VA contents. This increase in the extent of the water sorption with the increase in the VA content led to a steady increase in the water permeability in the poly(ethylene‐co‐vinylacetate) copolymers. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Novel aromatic polyamides have been prepared by a combination of diacids containing preformed benzimidazole rings and aromatic diamines. By the phosphorylation method of polycondensation, polymers of high molecular weight (inherent viscosities between 0.81 and 2.13 dL/g) were obtained, which showed good solubility in polar aprotic solvents. The combination of aromatic amide linkages and benzimidazole rings along the polymer chain endowed the polymers with high thermal resistance and excellent mechanical properties. Glass transition temperatures fell in the range of 290–330 °C as measured by differential scanning calorimetry, and initial decomposition temperatures under nitrogen were over 480 °C as measured by thermogravimetric analysis. Some polymer films showed outstanding tensile strength (over 150 MPa) and moduli (up to 5 GPa). The presence of benzimidazole rings in the current polyamides greatly enhanced their hydrophilicity in comparison with classical wholly aromatic polyamides; thus, although aromatic polyamide films normally show water sorption values of only 4–8%, some of the current poly(benzimidazole amide)s show water sorption up to 19% in a 65% relative humidity atmosphere. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New polyamides, containing a benzimidazole side group and ethylene oxide moieties in the structural repeat unit, were synthesized by low‐temperature polycondensation. The aim of this design was to obtain polyamides that were more soluble in common organic solvents and hence had better processability than benzimidazole polyamides while maintaining the water sorption properties characteristic of the latter. The results showed that the number of ether linkages of the repeat unit played an important role in the glass‐transition temperature and in the water sorption properties, the polyamides with one or two ethylene oxide units being more hydrophilic than benzimidazole polyamides. However, the length of the ethylene oxide chain played a minor role in the solubility because the second member of the series, with two ether linkages (i.e., one ethylene oxide unit), reached the same level of solubility as those polyamides with more ethylene oxide moieties. No crystallinity was observed by X‐ray and calorimetric measurements for the new polymers. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 112–121, 2005  相似文献
