A dominating set of a graph G = (N,E) is a subset S of nodes such that every node is either in S or adjacent to a node which is in S. The domatic number of G is the size of a maximum cardinality partition of N into dominating sets. The problems of finding a minimum cardinality dominating set and the domatic number are both NP-complete even for special classes of graphs. In the present paper we give an O(nE∣) time algorithm that finds a minimum cardinality dominating set when G is a circular arc graph (intersection graph of arcs on a circle). The domatic number problem is solved in O(n2 log n) time when G is a proper circular arc graph, and it is shown NP-complete for general circular arc graphs.  相似文献

A dominating cycle for a graph G = (V, E) is a subset C of V which has the following properties: (i) the subgraph of G induced by C has a Hamiltonian cycle, and (ii) every vertex of V is adjacent to some vertex of C. In this paper, we develop an O(n2) algorithm for finding a minimum cardinality dominating cycle in a permutation graph. We also show that a minimum cardinality dominating cycle in a permutation graph always has an even number of vertices unless it is isomorphic to C3.  相似文献

Motivated by the gateway placement problem in wireless networks, we consider the geometric k-centre problem on unit disc graphs: given a set of points P in the plane, find a set F of k points in the plane that minimizes the maximum graph distance from any vertex in P to the nearest vertex in F in the unit disc graph induced by PF. We show that the vertex 1-centre provides a 7-approximation of the geometric 1-centre and that a vertex k-centre provides a 13-approximation of the geometric k-centre, resulting in an O(kn)-time 26-approximation algorithm. We describe O(n2m)-time and O(n3)-time algorithms, respectively, for finding exact and approximate geometric 1-centres, and an O(mn2k)-time algorithm for finding a geometric k-centre for any fixed k. We show that the problem is NP-hard when k is an arbitrary input parameter. Finally, we describe an O(n)-time algorithm for finding a geometric k-centre in one dimension.  相似文献

A vertex u in an undirected graph G = (V, E) is said to dominate all its adjacent vertices and itself. A subset D of V is a dominating set in G if every vertex in G is dominated by a vertex in D, and is a minimum dominating set in G if no other dominating set in G has fewer vertices than D. The domination number of G is the cardinality of a minimum dominating set in G.The problem of determining, for a given positive integer k and an undirected graph G, whether G has a dominating set D in G satisfying ¦D¦ ≤ k, is a well-known NP-complete problem. Cockayne have presented a linear time algorithm for finding a minimum dominating set in a tree. In this paper, we will present a linear time algorithm for finding a minimum dominating set in a series-parallel graph.  相似文献

Permutation diagrams have been used in circuit design to model a set of single point nets crossing a channel, where the minimum number of layers needed to realize the diagram equals the clique number ω(G) of its permutation graph, the value of which can be calculated in O(nlogn) time. We consider a generalization of this model motivated by “standard cell” technology in which the numbers on each side of the channel are partitioned into consecutive subsequences, or cells, each of which can be left unchanged or flipped (i.e., reversed). We ask, for what choice of flippings will the resulting clique number be minimum or maximum. We show that when one side of the channel is fixed (no flipping), an optimal flipping for the other side can be found in O(nlogn) time for the maximum clique number, and that when both sides are free this can be solved in O(n2) time. We also prove NP-completeness of finding a flipping that gives a minimum clique number, even when one side of the channel is fixed, and even when the size of the cells is restricted to be less than a small constant. Moreover, since the complement of a permutation graph is also a permutation graph, the same complexity results hold for the stable set (independence) number. In the process of the NP-completeness proof we also prove NP-completeness of a restricted variant of a scheduling problem. This new NP-completeness result may be of independent interest.  相似文献

W.C.K. Yen introduced BOTTLENECK DOMINATION and BOTTLENECK INDEPENDENT DOMINATION. He presented an -time algorithm to compute a minimum bottleneck dominating set. He also obtained that the BOTTLENECK INDEPENDENT DOMINATING SET problem is NP-complete, even when restricted to planar graphs. We present simple linear time algorithms for the BOTTLENECK DOMINATING SET and the BOTTLENECK TOTAL DOMINATING SET problem. Furthermore, we give polynomial time algorithms (most of them with linear time-complexities) for the BOTTLENECK INDEPENDENT DOMINATING SET problem on the following graph classes: AT-free graphs, chordal graphs, split graphs, permutation graphs, graphs of bounded treewidth, and graphs of clique-width at most k with a given k-expression.  相似文献

Computing optimal islands   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Let S be a bicolored set of n points in the plane. A subset I of S is an island if there is a convex set C such that I=CS. We give an O(n3)-time algorithm to compute a monochromatic island of maximum cardinality. Our approach is adapted to optimize similar (decomposable) objective functions. Finally, we use our algorithm to give an O(logn)-approximation for the problem of computing the minimum number of convex polygons that cover a class region.  相似文献

In this paper, we study a minimum connected dominating set problem (CDS) in wireless networks, which selects a minimum CDS with property that all intermediate nodes inside every pairwise shortest path should be included. Such a minimum CDS (we name this problem as SPCDS) is an important tache of some other algorithms for constructing a minimum CDS. We prove that finding such a minimum SPCDS can be achieved in polynomial time and design an exact algorithm with time complexity O(δ 2 n), where δ is the maximum node degree in communication graph.  相似文献

An efficient dominating set (or perfect code) in a graph is a set of vertices the closed neighborhoods of which partition the graph's vertex set. We introduce graphs that are hereditary efficiently dominatable in that sense that every induced subgraph of the graph contains an efficient dominating set. We prove a decomposition theorem for (bull, fork, C4)‐free graphs, based on which we characterize, in terms of forbidden induced subgraphs, the class of hereditary efficiently dominatable graphs. We also give a decomposition theorem for hereditary efficiently dominatable graphs and examine some algorithmic aspects of such graphs. In particular, we give a polynomial time algorithm for finding an efficient dominating set (if one exists) in a class of graphs properly containing the class of hereditary efficiently dominatable graphs by reducing the problem to the maximum weight independent set problem in claw‐free graphs.  相似文献

In this paper, we focus on the directed minimum degree spanning tree problem and the minimum time broadcast problem. Firstly, we propose a polynomial time algorithm for the minimum degree spanning tree problem in directed acyclic graphs. The algorithm starts with an arbitrary spanning tree, and iteratively reduces the number of vertices of maximum degree. We can prove that the algorithm must reduce a vertex of the maximum degree for each phase, and finally result in an optimal tree. The algorithm terminates in O(mnlogn) time, where m and n are the numbers of edges and vertices of the graph, respectively. Moreover, we apply the new algorithm to the minimum time broadcast problem. Two consequences for directed acyclic graphs are: (1) the problem under the vertex-disjoint paths mode can be approximated within a factor of of the optimum in O(mnlogn)-time; (2) the problem under the edge-disjoint paths mode can be approximated within a factor of O(Δ*/logΔ*) of the optimum in O(mnlogn)-time, where Δ* is the minimum k such that there is a spanning tree of the graph with maximum degree k.  相似文献

An efficient parallel algorithm is presented to find a maximum weight independent set of a permutation graph which takesO (logn) time usingO (n 2/logn) processors on an EREW PRAM, provided the graph has at mostO (n) maximal independent sets. The best known parallel algorithm takesO (log2 n) time andO (n 3/logn) processors on a CREW PRAM.  相似文献

A set S of vertices in a graph H=(V,E) with no isolated vertices is a paired-dominating set of H if every vertex of H is adjacent to at least one vertex in S and if the subgraph induced by S contains a perfect matching. Let G be a permutation graph and π be its corresponding permutation. In this paper we present an O(mn) time algorithm for finding a minimum cardinality paired-dominating set for a permutation graph G with n vertices and m edges.  相似文献

In McDiarmid, B. Reed, A. Schrijver, and B. Shepherd (Univ. of Waterloo Tech. Rep., 1990) a polynomial-time algorithm is given for the problem of finding a minimum cost circuit without chords (induced circuit) traversing two given vertices of a planar graph. The algorithm is based on the ellipsoid method. Here we give an O(n2) combinatorial algorithm to determine whether two nodes in a planar graph lie on an induced circuit. We also give a min-max relation for the problem of finding a maximum number of paths connecting two given vertices in a planar graph so that each pair of these paths forms an induced circuit.  相似文献

It is well known [9] that finding a maximal independent set in a graph is in class NC and [10] that finding a maximal independent set in a hypergraph with fixed dimension is in RNC. It is not known whether this latter problem remains in NC when the dimension is part of the input. We will study the problem when the problem instances are randomly chosen. It was shown in [6] that the expected running time of a simple parallel algorithm for finding the lexicographically first maximal independent set (Ifmis) in a random simple graph is logarithmic in the input size. In this paper, we will prove a generalization of this result. We show that if a random k-uniform hypergraph has vertex set {1, 2, …, n} and its edges are chosen independently with probability p from the set of (nk) possible edges, then our algorithm finds the Ifmis in O( ) expected time. The hidden constant is independent of k, p. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Random Struct. Alg., 9 , 359–377 (1996)  相似文献

In this paper, we first present an O(n+m)-time sequential algorithm to solve the Hamiltonian problem on a distance-hereditary graph G, where n and m are the number of vertices and edges of G, respectively. This algorithm is faster than the previous best known algorithm for the problem which takes O(n2) time. We also give an efficient parallel implementation of our sequential algorithm. Moreover, if G is represented by its decomposition tree form, the problem can be solved optimally in O(logn) time using O((n+m)/logn) processors on an EREW PRAM.  相似文献

For a fixed positive integer k, a k-tuple dominating set of a graph G=(V,E) is a subset D?V such that every vertex in V is dominated by at least k vertex in D. The k-tuple domination number γ ×k (G) is the minimum size of a k-tuple dominating set of G. The special case when k=1 is the usual domination. The case when k=2 was called double domination or 2-tuple domination. A 2-tuple dominating set D 2 is said to be minimal if there does not exist any D′?D 2 such that D′ is a 2-tuple dominating set of G. A 2-tuple dominating set D 2, denoted by γ ×2(G), is said to be minimum, if it is minimal as well as it gives 2-tuple domination number. In this paper, we present an efficient algorithm to find a minimum 2-tuple dominating set on permutation graphs with n vertices which runs in O(n 2) time.  相似文献

A d-octopus of a graph G=(V,E) is a subgraph T=(W,F) of G such that W is a dominating set of G, and T is the union of d (not necessarily disjoint) shortest paths of G that have one endpoint in common. First, we study the complexity of finding and approximating a d-octopus of a graph. Then we show that for some NP-complete graph problems that are hard to approximate in general there are efficient approximation algorithms with worst case performance ratio c·d for some small constant c>0 (depending on the problem) assuming that the input graph G is given together with a d-octopus of G. For example, there is a linear time algorithm to approximate the bandwidth of a graph within a factor of 8d. Furthermore, the minimum number of subsets in a partition of the vertex set of a graph into clusters of diameter at most k can be approximated in linear time within a factor of 3d (for k=2) and 2d (for k⩾3). Finally, we show that there are O(n7d+2) time algorithms to compute a minimum cardinality dominating set, respectively, total dominating set for graphs having a d-octopus.  相似文献

The problem ofminimum color sumof a graph is to color the vertices of the graph such that the sum (average) of all assigned colors is minimum. Recently it was shown that in general graphs this problem cannot be approximated withinn1 − ε, for any ε > 0, unlessNP = ZPP(Bar-Noyet al., Information and Computation140(1998), 183–202). In the same paper, a 9/8-approximation algorithm was presented for bipartite graphs. The hardness question for this problem on bipartite graphs was left open. In this paper we show that the minimum color sum problem for bipartite graphs admits no polynomial approximation scheme, unlessP = NP. The proof is byL-reducing the problem of finding the maximum independent set in a graph whose maximum degree is four to this problem. This result indicates clearly that the minimum color sum problem is much harder than the traditional coloring problem, which is trivially solvable in bipartite graphs. As for the approximation ratio, we make a further step toward finding the precise threshold. We present a polynomial 10/9-approximation algorithm. Our algorithm uses a flow procedure in addition to the maximum independent set procedure used in previous solutions.  相似文献

A general problem in computational graph theory is that of finding an optimal subgraph H of a given weighted graph G. The matching problem (which is easy) and the traveling salesman problem (which is not) are well-known examples of this general problem. In the literature one can also find a variety of ad hoc algorithms for solving certain special cases in linear time. We suggest a general approach for constructing linear-time algorithms in the case where the graph G is defined by certain rules of composition (as are trees, series-parallel graphs, and outerplanar graphs) and the desired subgraph H satisfies a property that is “regular” with respect to these rules of composition (as do matchings, dominating sets, and independent sets for all the classes just mentioned). This approach is applied to obtain a linear-time algorithm for computing the irredundance number of a tree, a problem for which no polynomial-time algorithm was previously known.  相似文献

The shortest-paths problem is a fundamental problem in graph theory and finds diverse applications in various fields. This is why shortest path algorithms have been designed more thoroughly than any other algorithm in graph theory. A large number of optimization problems are mathematically equivalent to the problem of finding shortest paths in a graph. The shortest-path between a pair of vertices is defined as the path with shortest length between the pair of vertices. The shortest path from one vertex to another often gives the best way to route a message between the vertices. This paper presents anO(n 2) time sequential algorithm and anO(n 2/p+logn) time parallel algorithm on EREW PRAM model for solving all pairs shortest paths problem on circular-arc graphs, wherep andn represent respectively the number of processors and the number of vertices of the circular-arc graph.  相似文献
