We demonstrate the combination of a rails and anchors microfluidic system with laser forcing to enable the creation of highly controllable 2D droplet arrays. Water droplets residing in an oil phase can be pinned to anchor holes made in the base of a microfluidic channel, enabling the creation of arrays by the appropriate patterning of such holes. The introduction of laser forcing, via laser induced thermocapillary forces to anchored droplets, enables the selective extraction of particular droplets from an array. We also demonstrate that such anchor arrays can be filled with multiple, in our case two, droplets each and that if such droplets have different chemical contents, the application of a laser at their interface triggers their merging and a chemical reaction to take place. Finally by adding guiding rails within the microfluidic structure we can selectively fill large scale arrays with monodisperse droplets with significant control over their contents. In this way we make a droplet array filled with 96 droplets containing different concentrations of fluorescent microparticles.  相似文献

Droplet-based microfluidics is an attractive approach for producing microgels due to its high potential to control the size and shape of the particles and precisely entrap the substances within the hydrogel matrix. However, the microfluidic generation of monodisperse microgels with desired structures is still challenging. Indeed, the rheological and interfacial properties of the immiscible fluids, as well as the adopted gelling strategy, play important roles in microfluidic methods. Herein, sodium alginate droplets with different concentrations are generated via a microfluidic device with a flow-focusing unit. Besides, a combined in situ and ex situ strategy is optimized to crosslink sodium alginate droplets in the presence of calcium ions. The effects of alginate concentration and junction width in the flow focusing unit are investigated on droplet size and droplet formation regimes. It is observed that by increasing the alginate concentration, the dripping regime of droplet formation may be transformed to one of the binary dripping or quasijetting regimes. In the binary dripping regime, two successive different-sized droplets are generated in each period of droplet formation, which leads to low monodispersity in the collected droplets. However, the droplets produced in the quasijetting regime are interestingly monodisperse and also smaller than those of the dripping and binary dripping regimes. The breakup dynamics of the alginate thread is also analyzed with a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. This analysis discloses that the viscous stresses, as well as the viscous dissipation, have important roles in controlling the stable modes of droplet formation.  相似文献

We present a novel method for passive separation of microfluidic droplets by size at high throughput using deterministic lateral displacement (DLD). We also show that droplets containing Saccharomyces cerevisiae shrink significantly during incubation while droplets containing only yeast media retain or slightly increase their size. We demonstrate the DLD device by sorting out shrunken yeast-cell containing droplets from 31% larger diameter droplets which were generated at the same time containing only media, present at a >40-fold excess. This demonstrates the resolving power of droplet separation by DLD and establishes that droplets can be separated for a biological property of the droplet contents discriminated by a change of the physical properties of the droplet. Thus suggesting that this technique may be used for e.g. clonal selection. The same device also separates 11 μm from 30 μm droplets at a rate of 12,000 droplets per second, more than twofold faster than previously demonstrated passive hydrodynamic separation devices.  相似文献

In recent years, research on the application of microdroplets in the fields of biotechnology and chemistry has made remarkable progress, but the technology for the stable generation of single-micrometer-scale microdroplets has not yet been established. In this paper, we developed an efficient and stable single-micrometer-scale droplet generation device based on the fragmentation of droplet tails, called “tail thread mode”, that appears under moderate flow conditions. This method can efficiently encapsulate microbeads that mimic cells and chemical products in passively generated single-micrometer-scale microdroplets. The device has a simple 2D structure; a T-junction is used for droplet generation; and in the downstream, multi-branch channels are designed for droplet deformation into the tail. Several 1–2 µm droplets were successfully produced by the tail’s fragmentation; this continuous splitting was induced by the branch channels. We examined a wide range of experimental conditions and found the optimal flow rate condition can be reduced to one-tenth compared to the conventional tip-streaming method. A mold was fabricated by simple soft lithography, and a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) device was fabricated using the mold. Based on the 15 patterns of experimental conditions and the results, the key factors for the generation of microdroplets in this device were examined. In the most efficient condition, 61.1% of the total droplets generated were smaller than 2 μm.  相似文献

Recently, chemical operations with microfluidic devices, especially droplet-based operations, have attracted considerable attention because they can provide an isolated small-volume reaction field. However, analysis of these operations has been limited mostly to aqueous-phase reactions in water droplets due to device material restrictions. In this study, we have successfully demonstrated droplet formation of five common organic solvents frequently used in chemical synthesis by using a simple silicon/glass-based microfluidic device. When an immiscible liquid with surfactant was used as the continuous phase, the organic solvent formed droplets similar to water-in-oil droplets in the device. In contrast to conventional microfluidic devices composed of resins, which are susceptible to swelling in organic solvents, the developed microfluidic device did not undergo swelling owing to the high chemical resistance of the constituent materials. Therefore, the device has potential applications for various chemical reactions involving organic solvents. Furthermore, this droplet generation device enabled control of droplet size by adjusting the liquid flow rate. The droplet generation method proposed in this work will contribute to the study of organic reactions in microdroplets and will be useful for evaluating scaling effects in various chemical reactions.  相似文献

A method for on-demand droplet fusion in a microfluidic channel is presented using the flow created from a single explosively expanding cavitation bubble. We test the technique for water-in-oil droplets, which are produced using a T-junction design in a microfluidic chip. The cavitation bubble is created with a pulsed laser beam focused into one droplet. High-speed photography of the dynamics reveals that the droplet fusion can be induced within a few tens of microseconds and is caused by the rapid thinning of the continuous phase film separating the droplets. The cavitation bubble collapses and re-condenses into the droplet. Droplet fusion is demonstrated for static and moving droplets, and for droplets of equal and unequal sizes. Furthermore, we reveal the diffusion dominated mixing flow and the transport of a single encapsulated cell into a fused droplet. This laser-based droplet fusion technique may find applications in micro-droplet based chemical synthesis and bioassays.  相似文献

A multifunctional and high-efficiency microfluidic device for droplet generation and fusion is presented. Through unique design of the micro-channels, the device is able to alternately generate droplets, generating droplet ratios ranging from 1 ratio 5 to 5 ratio 1, and fuse droplets, enabling precise chemical reactions in several picoliters on a single chip. The controlled fusion is managed by passive control based on the channel geometry and liquid phase flow. The synthesis of CdS nanoparticles utilizing each fused droplet as a microreactor for rapid and efficient mixing of reagents is demonstrated in this paper. Following alternating droplet generation, the channel geometry allows the exclusive fusion of alternate droplets with concomitant rapid mixing and produces supersaturated solution of Cd2+ and S2- ions to form CdS nanoparticles in each fused droplet. The spectroscopic properties of the CdS nanoparticles produced by this method are compared with CdS prepared by bulk mixing.  相似文献

Emulsions are widely used to produce sol-gel, drugs, synthetic materials, and food products. Recent advancements in microfluidic droplet emulsion technology has enabled the precise sampling and processing of small volumes of fluids (picoliter to femtoliter) by the controlled viscous shearing in microchannels. However the generation of monodispersed droplets smaller than 1 microm without surfactants has been difficult to achieve. Normally, the generation of satellite droplets along with parent droplets is undesirable and makes it difficult to control volume and purity of samples in droplets. In this paper, however, several methods are presented to passively filter out satellite droplets from the generation of parent droplets and use these satellite droplets as the source for monodispersed production of submicron emulsions. A passive satellite droplet filtration system and a dynamic satellite droplet separation system are demonstrated. Satellite droplets are filtered from parent droplets with a two-layer channel geometry. This design allows the creation and collection of droplets that are less than 100 nm in diameter. In the dynamic separation system, satellite droplets of defined sizes can be selectively separated into different collecting zones. The separation of the satellite droplets into different collecting zones correlates with the cross channel position of the satellite droplets during the breakup of the liquid thread. The delay time for droplets to switch between the different alternating collecting zones is nominally 1 min and is proportional to the ratio of the oil shear flows. With our droplet generation system, monodispersed satellite droplets with an average radius of 2.23 +/- 0.11 microm, and bidispersed secondary and tertiary satellite droplets with radii of 1.55 +/- 0.07 microm and 372 +/- 46 nm respectively, have been dynamically separated and collected.  相似文献

Oils containing both fluorescent semiconductor and magnetic oxide nanoparticles are used to produce oil in water emulsions. This technique produces oil droplets with homogeneous fluorescence and high magnetic nanoparticle concentrations. The optical properties of the oil droplets are studied as a function of the droplet sizes for various concentrations of fluorescent and magnetic nanoparticles. For all concentrations tested, we find a linear variation of the droplet fluorescent intensity as a function of the droplet volume. For a given size and a given quantum dot (QD) concentration, the droplet fluorescence intensity drops sharply as a function of the magnetic nanoparticle concentration. We show that this decrease is due mainly to the strong absorption cross section of the magnetic nanoparticles and to a lesser extent to the dynamic and static quenching of the QD fluorescence. The role of the iron oxide nanoparticle localization in the droplet (surface versus volume) is also discussed.  相似文献

This study introduces the application of the synchrotron radiation induced X-ray fluorescence (SR-XRF) microprobe installed at the Super Photon ring-8 GeV (SPring-8), which is the world's largest third-generation synchrotron radiation facility, to the specification of chemical properties of various atmospheric samples. The combination of visual elemental mapping and XRF spectral analyses allows for the interpretation of the nature and composition of individual particles. Individually collected droplets by the replication technique were also irradiated by X-ray microbeam to carry out visual reconstruction of elemental maps for their multiple components. The multielemental peaks corresponding to X-ray energy were also successfully resolved. Because the chemical contents of solute for individual droplets can be definitely clarified in this study, we can describe the mechanisms involved in droplet formation and pollutant scavenging. The point analysis of sand dust collected from the local desert in China confirmed that the fine fragments of sand, which may be lifted and transported over a long distance, are considerably inhomogeneous in elemental component.  相似文献

An experimental technique based on a modified vibrating orifice aerosol generator has been employed to study unsteady evaporation of linear streams of highly monodisperse binary microdroplets of volatile constituents over short time periods (i.e., <1 ms), such that the droplet composition remains nearly constant. The droplet size and temperature (i.e., refractive index) have been determined with high temporal resolution from the resonances observed in the simultaneous elastic and Raman light scattering spectra obtained by varying the droplet size through modulation of droplet generation frequency. By using this technique we show that thermodynamic parameters of binary systems, such as activity coefficients as well as vapor pressures of the constituents as functions of temperature, can be determined. We have applied the procedure to study unsteady evaporation rates of pure ethanol and methanol droplets as well as binary droplets containing various ratios of ethanol and methanol. We have obtained vapor pressures of ethanol and methanol as functions of temperature as well as activity coefficients of ethanol and methanol as functions of composition, and the results show excellent agreements with the values reported in the literature. The technique presented in this paper is applicable to any binary system containing at least one volatile constituent. Copyright 2000 Academic Press.  相似文献

In this communication we report the first use of the Raman laser tweezers technique to trap and hold a mixed droplet of oleic acid and water at atmospheric pressure for 30 min, oxidize the oleic acid on the droplet, follow the decay of reactants and the growth of chemical products using Raman spectroscopy, and monitor the growth in size of the droplet as it becomes more hydrophilic. We demonstrate that the oxidation of organic films on water droplets could have large climatic effects in the atmosphere. We show that cloud-droplet growth and activation of cloud condensation nuclei (to become cloud droplets) is retarded by the presence of an organic film and that chemical oxidation of this film would allow a cloud droplet to grow, reducing cloud albedo by inducing precipitation, and would allow a cloud condensation nucleus to grow to a cloud droplet, thus forming a cloud and increasing the albedo of the Earth.  相似文献

We propose a highly versatile and programmable nanolitre droplet-based platform that accepts an unlimited number of sample plugs from a multi-well plate, performs digitization of these sample plugs into smaller daughter droplets and subsequent synchronization-free, robust injection of multiple reagents into the sample daughter droplets on-demand. This platform combines excellent control of valve-based microfluidics with the high-throughput capability of droplet microfluidics. We demonstrate the functioning of a proof-of-concept device which generates combinatorial mixture droplets from a linear array of sample plugs and four different reagents, using food dyes to mimic samples and reagents. Generation of a one dimensional array of the combinatorial mixture droplets on the device leads to automatic spatial indexing of these droplets, precluding the need to include a barcode in each droplet to identify its contents. We expect this platform to further expand the range of applications of droplet microfluidics to include applications requiring a high degree of multiplexing as well as high throughput analysis of multiple samples.  相似文献

Passive microfluidic channel geometries for control of droplet fission, fusion and sorting are designed, fabricated, and tested. In droplet fission, the inlet width of the bifurcating junction is used to control the range of breakable droplet sizes and the relative resistances of the daughter channels were used to control the volume of the daughter droplets. Droplet fission is shown to produce concentration differences in the daughter droplets generated from a primary drop with an incompletely mixed chemical gradient, and for droplets in each of the bifurcated channels, droplets were found to be monodispersed with a less than 2% variation in size. Droplet fusion is demonstrated using a flow rectifying design that can fuse multiple droplets of same or different sizes generated at various frequencies. Droplet sorting is achieved using a bifurcating flow design that allows droplets to be separated base on their sizes by controlling the widths of the daughter channels. Using this sorting design, submicron satellite droplets are separated from the larger droplets.  相似文献

Dynamic effects of bouncing water droplets on superhydrophobic surfaces   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Superhydrophobic surfaces have considerable technological potential for various applications due to their extreme water repellent properties. Superhydrophobic surfaces may be generated by the use of hydrophobic coating, roughness, and air pockets between solid and liquid. Dynamic effects, such as the bouncing of a droplet, can destroy the composite solid-air-liquid interface. The relationship between the impact velocity of a droplet and the geometric parameters affects the transition from the solid-air-liquid interface to the solid-liquid interface. Therefore, it is necessary to study the dynamic effect of droplets under various impact velocities. We studied the dynamic impact behavior of water droplets on micropatterned silicon surfaces with pillars of two different diameters and heights and with varying pitch values. A criterion for the transition from the Cassie and Baxter regime to the Wenzel regime based on the relationship between the impact velocity and the parameter of patterned surfaces is proposed. The trends are explained based on the experimental data and the proposed transition criterion. For comparison, the dynamic impact behavior of water droplets on nanopatterned surfaces was investigated. The wetting behavior under various impact velocities on multiwalled nanotube arrays also was investigated. The physics of wetting phenomena for bouncing water droplet studies here is of fundamental importance in the geometrical design of superhydrophobic surfaces.  相似文献

The main objective of the present study is to specify the chemical properties of individual rain droplets. For this purpose, we have combined the collodion replication method and the SR-XRF microprobe technique. The dry residual materials retained in a single rain droplet, which correspond to the former cloud condensation nuclei and the scavenged particles during droplet falling, were successively reconstructed by the multiple elemental maps using SR-XRF microprobe analytical system. Also the SR-XRF microprobe system allows us to quantify the masses of ultra trace elements in residues of individual rain droplet with fg level. The proposed combination method in the present study is found to be helpful to understand the physicochemical properties of individual rain droplets.  相似文献

Fabrication of surfaces with heterogeneous contact angle hysteresis enables extraction of droplet samples from bulk liquid volumes. These surfaces are created by printing high hysteresis wax islands onto low hysteresis superhydrophobic paper. The volume of the sampled droplets depends on the hysteresis of the printed islands, which can be controlled through both physical and chemical means. Physically, hysteresis is modified through the addition of surface roughness. Chemical hysteresis is tuned by changing the active chemical groups present on the wax surface. The observed control of the volume of sampled droplets, which is necessary for quantitative biochemical or chemical assays, extends to scenarios in which multiple droplet samples are extracted simultaneously from a single bulk droplet. Demonstration of the capacity of this technique to perform colorimetric glucose immunoassays is described. The ability to obtain well-defined microliter sample volumes and to extract several samples simultaneously from the same source enables the development of two-dimensional paper-based microfluidic devices for biomedical testing.  相似文献
