We demonstrate intracavity frequency doubling of a standard femtosecond Ti:sapphire oscillator. The cavity is extended with a pair of focusing mirrors and a 0.5-mm-thick BBO crystal. We achieve a repetition rate of 50 MHz and simultaneously generate 22 mW of 55-fs pulses at 810 nm and 200 mW of 73-fs pulses at 405 nm, which corresponds to 4 nJ per pulse. We create a total of 330-mW, 405-nm light when pumping the Ti:sapphire crystal with 5.7 W from an Ar-ion laser, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 5.7%. No saturation is found, which implies that higher outputs can be achieved with higher pump rates. Preliminary results from the use of blue pulses as pump in an optical parametric amplifier seeded by pulses from a photonic crystal fiber are presented. The backscattered fluorescence of nitrogen from filaments generated by intense ultra-fast Ti:sapphire laser pulses propagating in air is studied. The backscattered fluorescence from N2 molecules and ions show an exponential increase with increasing filament length, indicating amplified spontaneous emission. We present a 7-TW Ti:sapphire laser system operating at 50 Hz for laser Compton femtosecond X-ray generation. This laser system delivers 8.4 W of average output power at a repetition rate of 50 Hz with a pulse width of 24 fs. It demonstrates successful management using a dynamically stable resonator in the regenerative amplifier and compensation for thermal lensing by a convex mirror in a ring-type four-pass power amplifier. We also present the results of closed-loop corrections for distorted wavefronts of amplified and compressed laser pulses, using an adaptive optical system consisting of a Shack–Hartmann-type wavefront sensor and a deformable mirror. This closed-loop correction results in dramatic improvements, reducing wavefront distortions below 0.05 λ rms. Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser pulse filamentation in competition with optical breakdown in condensed matter is studied both experimentally and numerically using water as an example. Strong random deflection and modulation of the supercontinuum under tight focusing conditions were observed. They manifest the beginning of the filamentation process near the highly disordered plasma created by optical breakdown at the geometrical focus. A 50 cm silver coated hollow fiber with inner diameter of 250 μm and filled with argon has been used to compress optical pulses from a Ti:sapphire laser at 800 nm. Input pulses with energy of 250 μJ and duration of 110 fs were used and compressed pulses with energy of 220 μJ and duration of 20 fs were generated by using a prism compressor. Numerical and experimental results are compared. There is good agreement between the measured beam diameters of the hollow-fiber output pulse and the calculated values obtained from propagation of the HE11 mode into free space. For comparison, a similar uncoated fused-silica hollow fiber was also used to obtain 20 fs compressed pulses with an energy of 190 μJ. Compressing pulses of a mode-locked extended-cavity Ti:sapphire laser using a standard single-mode fiber and tilted-front-interface chirped mirrors yields phase-stabilized 4-fs, 3-nJ light pulses at the full, 24-MHz, repetition rate. The demonstrated source paves the way towards exploring interactions sensitive to the carrier-envelope-offset phase, such as, for example, photoemission from solid targets at moderate intensities (∼1012 W/cm2). We report observation of nanostructures formed on thin TiN and DLC films that were irradiated by 800- and 267-nm, femtosecond (fs) Ti:sapphire laser pulses at an energy fluence slightly above the ablation threshold. On the ablated thin-film surfaces, the linearly polarized fs pulses produce arrays of fine periodic structures that are almost oriented to the direction perpendicular to the laser polarization, while the circularly polarized light forms fine-dot structures. The size of these surface structures is 1/10–1/5 of the laser wavelength and decreases with a decrease in the laser wavelength. Photonic-molecule modes of a cobweb-microstructure fiber allow efficient nonlinear optical spectral broadening of nanojoule femtosecond light pulses. Spectral widths of approximately 200 nm are achieved at the output of a 6-cm sample of such a fiber for 40-fs Ti:sapphire laser pulses with an energy of a few nanojoules coupled into photonic-molecule modes. Higher values of the group index and a lower group-velocity dispersion, attainable with higher-order photonic-molecule modes, allow the efficiency of spectral broadening of femtosecond laser pulses to be increased relative to the efficiency of spectral broadening in the fundamental photonic-molecule mode. Experimental results on the pulse compression of 1-nJ, 150-fs pulses from a tunable, 76-MHz Ti:sapphire laser oscillator operating at around 750 nm are reported. The length of the pulses can be compressed to nearly one tenth by applying a high-delta, single-mode microstructured optical fiber exhibiting zero group-delay dispersion at 767 nm, and by a prism-pair/chirped-mirror compressor. The experimental results are verified by theoretical investigations modeling the pulse propagation taking into account non-linear self-phase modulation and fiber dispersion. Two-photon polymerisation is an established technique for the fabrication of three-dimensional microstructures. To date structures have mostly been developed using single beam serial writing. A novel approach to simultaneous multi-spot two-photon polymerisation, that uses a SiO2 on glass Fraunhofer diffractive optical element to generate an array of beamlets, is described. A Ti:sapphire laser, with wavelength 790 nm, 80 MHz repetition rate, 100 fs pulse duration and an average power of 25 mW, was used to initiate two-photon polymerisation. The DOE, in combination with a high power microscope objective, efficiently transforms the laser beam into a linear array of four spots of equal intensity. The fabrication of a periodic transmission grating, using parallel processing with these four spots, is shown. The grating was written in a Zr-loaded resin prepared on a glass substrate using dip coating deposition of a Zr/PMMA hybrid prepared by the sol-gel method. The operation of the diffractive element and the performance of the diffraction grating are also discussed.  相似文献

A synchronously pumped femtosecond optical parametric oscillator based on congruent MgO-doped periodically poled lithium niobate (c-MgO:PPLN) is reported. The system, operating at room temperature, was pumped by a mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser. The wavelengths of the signal and idler waves were tuned from 870 nm to 1.54 μm and 1.58 to 5.67 μm, respectively, by changing the pump wavelength, the grating period or the cavity length. Pumped by 1.1 W of 755 nm laser radiation, the OPO generated 310 mW of 1080 nm radiation. This signal output corresponds to a total conversion efficiency of 50%. Without dispersion compensation the OPO generated phase-modulated signal pulses of 200 fs duration. Besides the OPO of c-MgO:PPLN, an OPO of stoichiometric (s) MgO:PPLN was investigated. Because of the reduced sensitivity to photorefractive damage, both crystals allowed efficient OPO operation at room temperature. The micromachining of hydroxyapatite (HAp) is highly important for orthopedics and dentistry, since human bone and teeth consist mainly of HAp. We demonstrate ultrashort Ti:sapphire laser ablation of HAp, using pulse-widths of 50 fs, 500 fs, and 2 ps at a wavelength of 820 nm and at 1 kpps. The crucial medical issue is to preserve the chemical properties of the machined (ablated) surface. If the chemical properties of HAp change, the human bone or tooth cannot re-grow after laser processing. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we observe chemical properties of HAp ablated in air. The HAp is ablated at laser fluences of 3.2 J/cm2 (6.4×1013 W/cm2 at 50 fs), 3.3 J/cm2 (6.6×1012 W/cm2 at 500 fs), and 9.6 J/cm2 (4.8×1012 W/cm2 at 2 ps), respectively. As a result it is found that the ablated surface is unchanged after laser ablation over the pulse-width range used in this experiment. Visible femtosecond (fs) laser pulses have been obtained in a dye solution with a very simple traveling wave collinear configuration. A femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser (790 nm) pumps the dye solution by two-photon absorption and simultaneously generates supercontinuum, which seeds a light-amplification mechanism. Cross-correlation frequency-resolved optical gating measurements reveal a chirped structure in the dye pulse. The shortest pulse duration achieved is 170 fs and the overall energy efficiency of the process is typically 25%. The CIP method is used to calculate macroscopic plume expansion combined with the Zeldovich–Raiser theory for the cluster-formation process such as nucleation and growth. The effect of background gas and latent heat is examined in the one-dimensional case. The latent heats keep the plume temperature at 2500 K for a long period and this explains the delayed photoluminescence. Two contradicting experiments on the size dependence on ambient pressure are clearly explained and are attributed to the difference of laser energy. In two-dimensional simulation, a ‘mushroom-like’ plume shape is replicated, consistent with experimental results. Nanostructures on metal film surfaces have been written directly using a pulsed ultraviolet laser. The optical near-field effects of the laser were investigated. Spherical silica particles (500–1000 nm in diameter) were placed on metal films. After laser illumination with a single laser shot, nanoholes were obtained at the original position of the particles. The mechanism for the formation of the nanostructure patterns was investigated and found to be the near-field optical resonance effect induced by the particles on the surface. The size of the nanohole was studied as a function of laser fluence and silica particle size. The experimental results show a good agreement with those of the relevant theoretical calculations of the near-field light intensity distribution. The method of particle-enhanced laser irradiation allows the study of field enhancement effects as well as its potentialapplications for nanolithography. Developments in ultrafast Ti:sapphire laser technology can be applied in the investigation of nonlinear optical processes. We describe the application of a self-sustaining femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser as an illumination source in the field of confocal laser scanning fluorescence microscopy (LSM). We present spectra for various fluorescent stains under two-photon excitation and present LSM images of stained samples under mode-locked illumination. The potential for such a system as a non-destructive technique for studying live cells in biomedical research is discussed.  相似文献

Laser-driven micro-rocket   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We have developed a new type of miniature rocket motor for pointing and positioning microsatellites. A specially prepared tape with a transparent layer, through which the laser light passes, and an absorbing layer produce the thrust by the laser ablation process. We have achieved a specific impulse of 1800 s (greater than possible with chemistry), and laser momentum coupling coefficients of up to 50 dyn/W. The preprototype achieved 68 dyn of thrust. We discuss the target interaction physics and some of our measurements with the preprototype thruster. The plasma jet formed on the rear surface of a foil in laser–solid interaction is investigated by laser probing. The rear plasma jet, which is in line with the laser, formed a few picoseconds after the incidence of the focused laser, is due to a beam of fast electrons propagating through the target and is collimated by a strong magnetic field in the plasma. We describe the measurement of the line width of an atom laser beam extracted from a Bose–Einstein condensate. Using a novel magnetic resonance imaging technique, we find that the energy width of the atom laser beam is Fourier-limited by the duration of the output-coupling process. A miniature high-coherent diode laser was developed. Optical feedback from a high-Q microsphere resonator was used to narrow the spectrum of the laser, and a nearly half-pitch gradient-index lens served as a coupling element. As estimated from the variation in frequency-tuning range (chirp-reduction factor) the fast line width of the laser was reduced by more than three orders. It is remarkable that the system reveals stable single-mode operation at a relatively high feedback level. A tentative explanation is presented in terms of previously given models.
