Quillen's small object argument in the category of firm modules

Firm modules over a nonunital ring are introduced by Quillen to study properties of Morita invariance extending thus the case of unitary rings. In the present paper we introduce new homology groups in the category of firm modules which are preserved under Morita equivalences in very general terms. We see that there are long exact sequences of homology attached to certain morphisms of firm modules. Our arguments are based in Quillen's small object argument.     

Strong Homology Groups of Continuous Maps

In this paper, we define coherent morphisms of chain maps and homology groups of morphisms of this type. We construct strong homology groups of continuous maps of compact metric spaces and prove that for each continuous map f : X?→?Y , there exists a long exact homological sequence. Moreover, we show that for each inclusion i : A?→?X of compact metric spaces, there exists an isomorphism $ {{\bar{H}}_n}(i)\approx {{\bar{H}}_n}\left( {X,A} \right) $ .     

On the uniqueness of bivariant Chern class and bivariant Riemann–Roch transformations

The existence of bivariant Chern classes was conjectured by W. Fulton and R. MacPherson and proved by J.-P. Brasselet for cellular morphisms of analytic varieties. However, its uniqueness has been unsolved since then. In this paper we show that restricted to morphisms whose target varieties are possibly singular but (rational) homology manifolds (such as orbifolds), the bivariant Chern classes (with rational coefficients) are uniquely determined. We also discuss some related results and problems.

Effective Descent Morphisms in Some Quasivarieties of Algebraic, Relational, and More General Structures

We show that the class of effective descent morphisms coincides with the class of regular epimorphisms in suitable categories of internal structures in an exact category. In particular this applies to quasivarieties of (ordinary) first-order structures closed under strong homomorphic images.     

A simplicial approach to factorization systems and Kurosh-Amitsur radicals

Regarding categories as simplicial sets via the nerve functor, we extend the notion of a factorization system from morphisms in a category, to 1-simplexes in an arbitrary simplicial set. Applied to what we call the simplicial set of short exact sequences, it gives the notion of Kurosh-Amitsur radical. That is, we present a unified approach to factorization systems and radicals.     

Category with a natural cone

Generally, in homotopy theory a cylinder object (or, its dual, a path object) is used to define homotopy between morphisms, and a cone object is used to build exact sequences of homotopy groups. Here, an axiomatic theory based on a cone functor is given. Suspension objects are associated to based objects and cofibrations, obtaining homotopy groups referred to an object and relative to a cofibration, respectively. Exact sequences of these groups are built. Algebraic and particular examples are given. We point out that the main results of this paper were already stated in [3], and the purpose of this article is to give full details of the foregoing.     

Borel–Moore homology,Riemann–Roch transformations,and local terms

We develop various properties of étale Borel–Moore homology and study its relationship with intersection theory. Using Gabber's localized cycle classes we define étale homological Gysin morphisms and show that they are compatible with the cycle class map and Gysin morphisms in intersection theory. We also study étale versions of bivariant operations, and establish their compatibility with Riemann–Roch transformations and Fulton–MacPherson bivariant operations. As an application of these techniques we show that in certain situations local terms for correspondences acting on étale cohomology are given by cycle classes.     

GLUING TECHNIQUES IN TRIANGULAR GEOMETRY

We discuss gluing of objects and gluing of morphisms in triangulatedcategories. We illustrate the results by producing, among otherthings, a Mayer-Vietoris exact sequence involving Picard groups.     

A remark on a formula of Zassenhaus

Using the decomposition principle in groups of coalgebra morphisms we give a simple proof of a theorem of H. J. Baues related to an identity of Zassenhaus in algebras of prime characteristic p>0.     

Artin Algebras of Finite Type and Finite Categories of Δ-Good Modules

We give an alternative proof to the fact that, if the square of the infinite radical of the module category of an Artin algebra is equal to zero, then the algebra is of finite type by making use of the theory of postprojective and preinjective partitions. Further, we use this new approach in order to get a characterization of finite subcategories of Δ-good modules of a quasi-hereditary algebra in terms of depth of morphisms similar to a recently obtained characterization of Artin algebras of finite type.     

Cyclic homology of truncated quiver algebras

We determine the cyclic homology of truncated quiver algebras over a general commutative unital ring. Thus we improve and generalise the results in [8] and [5], where this problem has been studied for algebras over a field. We use the spectral sequence of a double complex that is obtained from minimal projective bimodule resolution and comparison morphisms.     

The Schur Multiplier of a Pair of Groups

In this article we develop the theory of a Schur multiplier for pairs of groups. The idea of such a multiplier is implicit in the work of J.-L. Loday (1978) and others on algebraicK -theory, and in the work of Eckmann et al. (1972) and others on group homology. In contrast to their work, we focus on the general group-theoretic properties of the multiplier. These properties are systematically derived from: 1) the functoriality of the multiplier; 2) an exact homology sequence; 3) and a transfer homomorphism.     

Euler characteristics of algebraic varieties

This note studies the behavior of Euler characteristics and of intersection homology Euler characteristics under proper morphisms of algebraic (respectively, analytic) varieties. The methods also yield, for algebraic (respectively, analytic) varieties, formulae comparing these two kinds of Euler characteristics. The main results are direct consequences of the calculus of constructible functions and Grothendieck groups of constructible sheaves. Similar formulae for Hodge‐theoretic invariants of algebraic varieties under morphisms were announced by the first and third authors in [5, 14]. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     

Bivariant Chern classes for morphisms with nonsingular target varieties

W. Fulton and R. MacPherson posed the problem of unique existence of a bivariant Chern class—a Grothendieck transformation from the bivariant theory F of constructible functions to the bivariant homology theory H. J.-P. Brasselet proved the existence of a bivariant Chern class in the category of embeddable analytic varieties with cellular morphisms. In general however, the problem of uniqueness is still unresolved. In this paper we show that for morphisms having nonsingular target varieties there exists another bivariant theory of constructible functions and a unique bivariant Chern class γ: . A Coboundary Morphism for the Grothendieck Spectral Sequence

Given an abelian category $\mathcal{A}$ with enough injectives we show that a short exact sequence of chain complexes of objects in $\mathcal{A}$ gives rise to a short exact sequence of Cartan-Eilenberg resolutions. Using this we construct coboundary morphisms between Grothendieck spectral sequences associated to objects in a short exact sequence. We show that the coboundary preserves the filtrations associated with the spectral sequences and give an application of these result to filtrations in sheaf cohomology.     

Monoidal categories of corings

We introduce a monoidal category of corings using two different notions of corings morphisms. The first one is the (right) coring extensions recently introduced by T. Brzeziński in [2], and the other is the usual notion of morphisms defined in [6] by J. Gómez-Torrecillas.
