We present methods using positive semigroups and perturbation theory in the application to the linear Boltzmann equation. Besides being a review, this paper also presents generalizations of known results and develops known methods in a more abstract setting.In Section 1 we present spectral properties of the semigroup operatorsW a(t) of the absorption semigroup and its generatorT a. In Section 2 we treat the full semigroup (W(t);t0) as a perturbation of the absorption semigroup. We discuss part of the problems (perturbation arguments and existence of eigenvalues) which have to be solved in order to obtain statements about the large time behaviour ofW(·). In Section 3 we discuss irreducibility ofW(·).In four appendices we present abstract methods used in Sections 1, 2 and 3.  相似文献

We consider a fourth order eigenvalue problem containing a spectral parameter both in the equation and in the boundary condition. The oscillation properties of eigenfunctions are studied and asymptotic formulae for eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are deduced. This paper presents a method for computing the solution to the time-dependent wave equation from the knowledge of a largely incomplete set of eigenfunctions of the Helmholtz operator, chosen at random. While a linear superposition of eigenfunctions can fail to properly synthesize the solution if a single term is missing, it is shown that solving a sparsity-promoting 1 minimization problem can vastly enhance the quality of recovery. This phenomenon may be seen as “compressive sampling in the Helmholtz domain.”  相似文献

In this paper a uniqueness theorem is proved for the wave equation in the domain Q2T=Ω×(0,2T), where Ω is a piecewise analytic Riemannian manifold (Riemannian polyhedron). Initial data are assumed to be given on a part Γ0 × (0, 2T) of the space-time boundary of the cylinder Q2T, Γ0. The uniqueness of a weak solution is proved “in the large,” in a domain formed by the corresponding characteristics of the wave equation. Bibliography:24 titles. The dynamics of perturbations to the Rossby-Haurwitz (RH) wave is analytically analyzed. These waves, being of great meteorological importance, are exact solutions to the nonlinear vorticity equation describing the motion of an ideal incompressible fluid on a rotating sphere. Each RH wave belongs to a space H 1H n , where H n is the subspace of homogeneous spherical polynomials of degree n. It is shown that any perturbation of the RH wave evolves in such a way that its energy K(t) and enstrophy η(t) decrease, remain constant, or increase simultaneously. A geometric interpretation of variations in the perturbation energy is given. A conservation law for arbitrary perturbations is obtained and used to classify all the RH-wave perturbations in four invariant sets, M n , M + n , H n , and M 0 nH n , depending on the value of their mean spectral number χ(t) = η(t)/K(t). The energy cascade of growing (or decaying) perturbations has opposite directions in the sets M n and M + n due to the hyperbolic dependence between K(t) and χ(t). A factor space with a factor norm of the perturbations is introduced, using the invariant subspace H n of neutral perturbations as the zero factor class. While the energy norm controls the perturbation part belonging to H n , the factor norm controls the perturbation part orthogonal to H n . It is shown that in the set M n (χ(t) < n(n + 1)), any nonzonal RH wave of subspace H 1H n (n ≥ 2) is Lyapunov unstable in the energy norm. This instability has nothing in common with the orbital (Poincaré) instability and is caused by asynchronous oscillations of two almost coinciding RH-wave solutions. It is also shown that the exponential instability is possible only in the invariant set M 0 nH n . A necessary condition for this instability is given. The condition states that the spectral number η(t) of the amplitude of each unstable mode must be equal to n(n + 1), where n is the RH wave degree. The growth rate is estimated and the orthogonality of the unstable normal modes to the RH wave are shown in two Hilbert spaces. The instability in the invariant set M + n of small-scale perturbations (χ(t) > n(n + 1)) is still an open problem. __________ Translated from Sovremennaya Matematika. This note contains the first example of a 1-parameter semigroup {T pt≧0} of linear contractions inL p (1<p<∞) for which the assertion of the local ergodic theorem (t 10T sfds conv. a.e. ast → 0+0 for allfL p) fails to be true. The first example is a continuous semigroup of unitary operators inL 2, the second a power-bounded continuous semigroup of positive operators inL 1. For uniformly stable bounded analytic C 0-semigroups {T(t)} t≥0 of linear operators in a Banach space B, we study the behavior of their orbits T (t)x, xB, at infinity. We also analyze the relationship between the order of approaching the orbit T (t)x to zero as t → ∞ and the degree of smoothness of the vector x with respect to the operator A −1 inverse to the generator A of the semigroup {T(t)} t≥0. In 2006, Sanwong and Sullivan described the maximal congruences on the semigroup N consisting of all non-negative integers under standard multiplication, and on the semigroup T(X) consisting of all total transformations of an infinite set X under composition. Here, we determine all maximal congruences on the semigroup Zn under multiplication modulo n. And, when Y lohtain in X, we do the same for the semigroup T(X, Y) consisting of all elements of T(X) whose range is contained in Y. We also characterise the minimal congruences on T(X. Y).  相似文献

This paper considers semigroups of operators generated by pseudodifferential operators in weighted L p -spaces of vector functions on \mathbbRn {\mathbb{R}^n} (or on a compact manifold without boundary). Sufficient conditions for a semigroup to be strongly continuous and analytic are obtained, conditions for it to be completely continuous are found, and the distribution of the eigenvalues of its infinitesimal generator is examined. Also, an integral representation that singles out the principal term of the semigroup as t → 0+ is established.  相似文献

It is known that relatively bounded compact perturbations of analytic semigroups yield again generators of analytic semigroups. On the other hand, for each non-analytic semigroup there is a relatively bounded rank one perturbation which is no longer a generator. In this note we show that in fact any non-analytic semigroup admits a relatively bounded rank one perturbation with a sequence of eigenvalues zj such that the real parts R(zj) converge to infinity.  相似文献

For suitable bounded operator semigroups (e tA ) t≥0 in a Banach space, we characterize the estimate ‖Ae tA ‖≤c/F(t) for large t, where F is a function satisfying a sublinear growth condition. The characterizations are by holomorphy estimates on the semigroup, and by estimates on powers of the resolvent. We give similar characterizations of the difference estimate ‖T n T n+1‖≤c/F(n) for a power-bounded linear operator T, when F(n) grows faster than n 1/2 for large n.  相似文献

We consider the Dirichlet Laplacian Δ in a family of bounded domains {−a < x < b, 0 < y < εh(x)}. The main assumption is that x = 0 is the only point of global maximum of the positive, continuous function h(x). We find the two-term asymptotics in ε → 0 of the eigenvalues and the one-term asymptotics of the corresponding eigenfunctions. The asymptotic formulas obtained involve the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of an auxiliary ODE on ℝ that depends on the behavior of h(x) as x → 0. The proof is based on a detailed study of the resolvent of the operator Δ.  相似文献

Pseudodifferential equations of the formv(Dx)y=f (here,v is a function holomorphic at zero andD x is a pseudodifferential operator) are studied on spaces of test functions of non-Gaussian infinite-dimensional analysis. We consider small perturbations with respect to a small parameter ε≥0 of a smooth vector field in ℝn+m possessing an invariant torusT m. We return to earlier work in Larsson, Thomée, and Wahlbin, IMA J. Numer. Anal. 11 (1991), concerning the numerical solution of a homogeneous linear wave equation with strong damping, arising in viscoelasticity. In that work spatial discretization by finite elements and associated fully discrete methods were analyzed in L 2-based norms. The analysis depended on the fact that the solution may be expressed in terms of an analytic semigroup. In the present work we combine this approach with recent results on discretization of parabolic problems to derive essentially optimal order error bounds in maximum-norm for piecewise linear finite elements combined with backward Euler and Crank–Nicolson time stepping methods. We define topologies on the space of bounded linear operators fromX into AP(S) and obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions for an operatorT to be compact or weakly compact in terms of the uniform continuity of the mapsT 5. It is shown that T * f is continuously differentiable for all fC(0, b, X) if and only if T is of bounded semi-variation on [0, b]. Further T * f is continuously differentiable for all fL p (0, b, X) (1 ≤ p < ∞) if and only if T is of bounded semi-p-variation on [0, b] and T(0) = 0. If T is an integrated semigroup with generator A, these respective conditions are necessary and sufficient for the Cauchy problem u′ = Au + f, u(0) = 0, to have integral (or mild) solutions for all f in the respective function vector spaces. A converse is proved to a well-known result by Da Prato and Sinestrari: the generator A of an integrated semigroup is a Hille-Yosida operator if, for some b > 0, the Cauchy problem has integral solutions for all fL 1(0, b, X). Integrated semigroups of bounded semi-p-variation are preserved under bounded additive perturbations of their generators and under commutative sums of generators if one of them generates a C 0-semigroup.
