Reconstruction of convection coefficients of an elliptic equation in the plane by Dirichlet to Neumann map

The inverse problem of determining two convection coefficients of an ellipticpartial differential equation by Dirichlet to Neumann map is discussed.It is well knownthat this is a severely ill-posed problem with high nonlinearity.By the inverse scatteringtechnique for first order elliptic system in the plane and the theory of generalized analyticfunctions,we give a constructive method for this inverse problem.     

The role of innovations in secondary school performance – Evidence from a conditional efficiency model

This paper studies the influence of educational innovations on school performance. We apply a tailored, fully nonparametric conditional efficiency model to study secondary school efficiency in the Netherlands. The application uses official school data and a self-collected questionnaire on recent innovations in schools. In the nonparametric model, it is assumed that schools aim to maximize educational attainments of students under a budget constraint. The results suggest that innovations are positively related to efficiency. We find that profiling, pedagogic, process and education chain innovations are significantly related to school efficiency, whereas innovations in the professionalization of teachers are insignificantly related to school efficiency. Furthermore, the number of locations per school and the number of schools per governing body are negatively and significantly related to school efficiency. School type and region significantly influence school efficiency, whereas share of disadvantaged students, degree of urbanization and student/teacher ratio do not have significant influence.     

Performance measurement in nonprofit governance: an empirical study of the Minnesota independent school districts

Linearity and input separability assumptions are pervasive in most nonprofit cost and performance measurement systems. In this paper, we employ both parametric and nonparametric econometric methodologies to test the linearity and input separability assumptions using data collected from the Minnesota independent school districts. Our test results reject both the assumptions for the Minnesota independent school districts. These findings suggest a need to develop alternative procedures that do not rely on these two pervasive assumptions if the information provided by not-for-profit performance measurement systems is to be relevant for decision making and performance evaluation.

Performance of an ATM multiplexer queue in the fluid approximation using the Beneš approach

This paper describes a new method for evaluating the queue length distribution in an ATM multiplexer assuming the cell arrival process can be assimilated to a variable rate fluid input. The method is based on a result due initially to Bene allowing the analysis of queues with general input. Its extension to fluid input systems is considered here in the case of a superposition of on/off sources. We derive an upper bound on the complementary queue length distribution. The method is most easily applied in the case of Poisson burst arrivals (infinite sources model). In this case, we derive analytic expressions for the tail of the queue length distribution. A corrective factor is deduced to convert the upper bounds to good approximations. Numerical results justify the accuracy of the method and demonstrate the impact of certain traffic characteristics on queue performance.     

Risk application research on risk warning mechanism in organizational crisis management – taking Vanke Real Estate Co. Ltd., as an example

With the changes in domestic and international economic environment, the increasingly dynamic and complex environment has become the pressures and challenges that enterprises have to face. From the perspective of healthy development of companies in long-term running, it’s urgent to build an enterprise risk warning system.This paper takes daily operational risks and crises in Chinese enterprises as the research object, synthetically using the relevant knowledge of risk management theory, early warning management theory, the strategic management theory, the analytic hierarchy process, and fuzzy mathematics to build a daily management risk early warning system for Chinese enterprises. By constructing the system, the enterprises can make dynamic tracking for different stages in business management, so as to realize the risk before crises, take some actions during and after crises.     

Facilitating parental engagement in school mathematics and science through inquiry-based learning: an examination of teachers’ and parents’ beliefs

This study examined teachers’ and parents’ beliefs on the implementation of inquiry-based modeling activities as a means to facilitate parental engagement in school mathematics and science. The study had three objectives: (a) to describe teachers’ beliefs about inquiry-based mathematics and science and parental engagement; (b) to describe parents’ beliefs about inquiry-based mathematics and science and their engagement in inquiry-based problem solving; and (c) to explore the impact of an inquiry-based learning environment comprising a model-eliciting activity and Twitter. The research involved three sixth-grade teachers and 32 parents from one elementary school. Teachers and parents participated in workshops, followed by the implementation of a model-eliciting activity in two classrooms. Three teachers and six parents participated in semi-structured interviews. Teachers reported positive beliefs on parental engagement in the mathematics and science classrooms and the potential positive role of parents in implementing innovative problem-solving activities. Parents expressed strong beliefs on their engagement and welcomed the inquiry-based modeling approach. Based on the results of this aspect of a four-year longitudinal design, implications for parental engagement in inquiry-based mathematics and science teaching and learning and further research are discussed.
