A theorem on energy integrals for linear second-order ordinary differential equations with variable coefficients

We aim at demonstrating a novel theorem on the derivation of energy integrals for linear second-order ordinary differential equations with variable coefficients. Namely, in this context, we will present a possible and consistent method to overcome the traditional difficulty of deriving energy integrals for Lagrangian functions that explicitly exhibit the independent variable. Our theorem is such that it appropriately governs the arbitrariness of the variable coefficients in order to have energy integrals ensured. In view of the theoretical framework in which the theorem will be embedded, we will also demonstrate that it can be applied as a mathematical method to solve linear second-order ordinary differential equations with variable coefficients. These results are expected to have a generalized fundamental character.     

On classification of second-order differential equations with complex coefficients

This paper is concerned with the deficiency index problem of second-order differential equations with complex coefficients. It is known that this class of equations is classified into cases I, II, and III according to the number of linearly independent solutions in suitable weighted square integrable spaces. In this study, the original equation is reformulated into a new formally self-adjoint differential system by introducing a new spectral parameter and the relationship between the classifications of the equation and the system is obtained. Moreover, the exact dependence of cases II and III on the corresponding half planes is given and some criteria of the three cases are established.

Oscillations of neutral differential equations with variable coefficients

We obtain sufficient conditions for the oscillation of all solutions of the neutral differential equation d\dt [y(t) + P(t)y(t-T)] + Q(t)y(t-σ) = 0 where our results extend and improve several known results in the literature. These improvements and extensions are obtained by establishing and using some lemmas which are interesting in their own rights and which may have further applications in analysis.     

On solving certain differential equations with variable coefficients

We show how to solve certain types of linear ordinary differential equations with variable coefficients by using Appell polynomials.

On solving differential and difference equations with variable coefficients

We introduce a method of solving the functional equation ∑_{j = 0}ⁿ a_jL^jf(x) = 0 where the a's are constants and L is a differential or finite difference operator that reduces the degree of a polynomial by 1.     

A prewavelet-based algorithm for the solution of second-order elliptic differential equations with variable coefficients on sparse grids

We present a Ritz-Galerkin discretization on sparse grids using prewavelets, which allows us to solve elliptic differential equations with variable coefficients for dimensions d ≥ 2. The method applies multilinear finite elements. We introduce an efficient algorithm for matrix vector multiplication using a Ritz-Galerkin discretization and semi-orthogonality. This algorithm is based on standard 1-dimensional restrictions and prolongations, a simple prewavelet stencil, and the classical operator-dependent stencil for multilinear finite elements. Numerical simulation results are presented for a three-dimensional problem on a curvilinear bounded domain and for a six-dimensional problem with variable coefficients. Simulation results show a convergence of the discretization according to the approximation properties of the finite element space. The condition number of the stiffness matrix can be bounded below 10 using a standard diagonal preconditioner.     

Nonoscillation and oscillation of second-order impulsive differential equations with periodic coefficients

In this paper, we give a nonoscillation criterion for half-linear equations with periodic coefficients under fixed moments of impulse actions. The method is based on the existence of positive solutions of the related Riccati equation and a recently obtained comparison principle. In the special case when the equation becomes impulsive Hill equation new oscillation criteria are also obtained.     

High-order compact schemes for second-order ordinary differential equations with singular coefficients

Homogeneous three-point finite-difference schemes of arbitrary order of accuracy for a second-order Dirichlet problem with generalized coefficients and generalized right-hand side are constructed and validated. The sufficient condition for the existence of 2π-periodic solutions of the following third-order functional differential equations with variable coefficients a(t)x^m(t) bx^2k-1(t) cx^12k-1(t) ∑↑2k-1i=1cix^i(t) g(x(t-τ))=p(t)=p(t 2π)is obtained. The approach is based on the abstract continuation theorem from Mawhin and the a-priori estimate of periodic solutions.     

Forced oscillation of second-order nonlinear differential equations with positive and negative coefficients

In this paper we give new oscillation criteria for forced super- and sub-linear differential equations by means of nonprincipal solutions.     

On global meromorphic solutions of second-order linear differential equations with meromorphic coefficients

The main purpose of this article is to study the existence theories of global meromorphic solutions for some second-order linear differential equations with meromorphic coefficients, which perfect the solution theory of such equations.     

Oscillation of solutions of second-order neutral delay differential equations with integrable coefficients

Some necessary conditions are established for the nonoscillation of solutions of the second-order neutral delay differential equation [a(t)(x (t) + p(t)x(t − τ)′]′ + q(t)f(x(t − σ)) = 0. Using these results, we obtain some oscillation criteria for the above equation.
