A new counting method was developed to determine226Ra in environmental samples by separating the equilibrated222Rn into a liquid scintillator. The integral counting method, which was originally developed for isolated individual radionuclides, was extended to the mixture of222Rn and its daughters in equilibrium. The optimum measurement conditions were established by examining the energy spectrum, counting time and quenching effect. An absolute counting was practiced by extrapolating the integral counting rate-bias voltage curve with the highest gain to zero bias. The detection limit thus obtained was 3 to 4·10−13 Ci.  相似文献

The activity concentration and absorbed gamma dose rates due to primordial radionuclides (238U, 232Th and 40K) have been determined for the soil of Coimbatore city using NaI(Tl) gamma-ray spectrometer. The average activity concentrations of 232Th, 238U and 40K in the soil samples have been found to be 31.4 Bq·kg−1, 12.8 Bq·kg−1 and 698.0 Bq·kg−1, respectively, which give the total gamma dose rate contribution of 56.4 nGy·h−1. Grab sampling technique has been used to determine the indoor radon (222Rn) and thoron (220Rn) progeny levels in different dwellings in the city. The concentrations of radon and thoron progenies range from 0.4 to 10.4 and from 0.7 to 12.7 mWL with a mean value of 1.4 mWL and 3.1 mWL, respectively. The annual effective dose due to radon and thoron progeny has been found to be 0.14 mSv·y−1.  相似文献

Operation of negative ion generators in three rooms of an occupied residence caused decreases in indoor concentrations of the radon decay products218Po,214Pb and214Bi, and of the thoron progeny212Pb. Activity levels of212Pb were lowered more than those of214Pb, resulting in a decrease in the potential alpha energy concentration ratio, PAEC(Tn:Rn). The change in PAEC(Tn:Rn) is a function of the halflives of214Pb and212Pb and their respective precursors and is similar to the effect brought about by increased room ventilation. Decay products are also removed from indoor air by plateout of charged particles on room walls. Plateout rates calculated for214Pb suggest that even in well-ventilated houses, the potential alpha energy concentration of radon is affected as much by wall plateout as by infiltration of outside air.  相似文献

The concentration of radioactive226Ra,232Th and40K in building and ceramic materials of Bangladesh was investigated by γ-spectrometry with two HPGe detectors. Radium equivalent activities, representative level index values, criterion formula, emanation coefficients and222Rn mass exhalation rates were estimated for the radiation hazard of the natural radioactivity in the materials. The activity concentrations of the natural radionuclides, radium equivalent activities, emanation coefficients and222Rn mass exhalation rates are compared with the corresponding values for building and ceramic materials of different countries. The radium equivalent activities in the samples varied between 30.9 (mosaic stone) and 328.0 Bq·kg−1 (gypsum). The emanation coefficient of the materials ranged from 7.83 (cement) to 33.0% (soil) and the222Rn mass exhalation rate ranged from 2.31 (stone chips) to 118.0 μBq·kg−1·s−1 (gypsum).  相似文献

The determination of soil-gas anomalies especially 222Rn anomalies, are important to precisely locate fault traces, as well as to investigate earthquake precursors. In this paper, we have studied and compared new rapid methods for on site determinations of radon (222Rn), thoron (220Rn) and total radon (222Rn+220Rn) in soil-gas. These new techniques pump the soil-gas continuously from the soil through a simple sampling tube to the counting cell for one-minute with discarding the excess. Then, either four one-minute counting periods (5-minute technique) or nine one-minute counting intervals (10-minute technique) are followed immediately. In all the methods, conversely to Morse"s method, the first counting period (C1) was not employed for calculations. Three calculation methods for the five-minute technique, two for the ten-minute technique and a modified Morse"s method are compared with theoretical values and different real soil-gases with different radon/thoron ratios. The affect of different flow rates of soil-gases into the counting cell was also investigated. Finally, the ten-minute technique seems to be a little more accurate, but the 5-minute technique is much more suitable for seismic field studies when a much larger number of determinations are required in a short time.  相似文献

Current techniques for determining low levels of dissolved thorium involve chemical separations, generally by coprecipitation with a carrier cation, purification by ion exchange procedures, electroplating and, finally, alpha counting by alpha spectrometry. Similarly, measurements of low228Ra and224Ra activities requires concentration, by coprecipitation with barium sulfate, followed by gamma counting. An improved method for determining radium and thorium from the232Th decay series has been developed which measures the activity of220Rn as an assay of its parents. Although some ingrowth corrections and minor separation procedures for Th are required, the results to date show that the dynamic counting of220Rn via de-emanation and alpha counting by the alpha-scintillation method is a preferable approach for determining these radium and thorium isotopes accurately and efficiently. The method for lower limit detection depends on the emanation rate, which depends on purge-gas flow rate and sample volume analyzed. Using 50-cc and 1000-cc bubblers, and maximum effective purge gas flow rate, a lower limit of detection of 0.4 and 0.06 pCi/L220Rn can be obtained, respectively.  相似文献

We have investigated the possibility of determining the relative concentrations of two radon isotopes (222Rn and220Rn) in the air, using solid state nuclear track detectors (CR-39) as alpha spectrometers. The detectors were exposed to222Rn and its daughters and220Rn and its daughters in the air. Analyzing only roundish tracks, it was observed that the performance of CR-39 as alpha spectrometer varies with etching time, improving markedly for long etching times.  相似文献

A method in which222Rn is extracted from 0.5 1 water samples to 20 ml toluene is described. 10 ml toluene solution with extracted222Rn is directly added to a glass scintillation vial containing 10 ml of liquid naphthalene based scintillation cocktail. Apart from diluting by toluene, the final counting solution still has excellent properties in terms of: / separation by pulse shape analysis, detection efficiency and background in the -region. The detection limit of222Rn for 0.5 1 water samples was 1.5 mBq l–1 (for 12,000 s count time). The concentration of222Rn in different environmental samples such as rain, tap and mineral waters as well as deep well waters were determined.  相似文献

222Rn concentrations along the seismic active area (some distinct in East Anatolian Active Fault System (EAFS), Turkey) were determined by using passive and active (prompt) methods including CR-39 and Markus-10, respectively. It was observed that the changing of 222Rn concentration along the fault lines, crossing the main East Anatolian Fault Line, has shown similar characteristics for both methods. The mean 222Rn concentrations were found to be between 1.2 and 3.6 kBq·m−3 and, 2 and 70 kBq·m−3 by using passive and prompt methods, respectively. Nevertheless, some measured terrestrial gamma-radiation dose rate in the same area has weak positive correlation to 222Rn concentration. Terrestrial gamma-dose rate at 1 m above the ground in the same sampling point, as for 222Rn concentration measurement were made, varied from 8.5 to 10.6 μR·h−1.  相似文献

The original purpose of this investigation started in 1996 was to study the radiological impact on the local population of the village of Chichiviriche de La Costa. But, soon after the major earthquake (Ms=6.8) in the state of Sucre on July 9, 1997, the objective was changed to study the fluctuation of radon (222Rn) to see if it could be correlated to seismic activity and/or if the amonlous change just before the earthquake can be considered a precusor for it. Measurements of222Rn by simply de-gassing about 250 ml of natural thermal water employing a Pylon AB-5 radiation monitor and counting the radiation after it reached equilibrium were performed. The values for four sampling periods in the first half of 1996 were about 17 Bq/l of222Rn, a month before the earthquake they were less than 15 Bq/l and increased about 70% to 25 Bq/l two days before the seismic event. In about two weeks, they returned to about 18 Bq/l. But, surprisingly, they have gradually increased to about 35 Bq/l, before leveling off at about 27 Bq/l.  相似文献

A new α track method is proposed for the measurement of radon (222Rn) concentration in environmental levels. This involves collecting radon daughters on the surface of pilot lamp and detecting α-particles emitted from the nuclides (218Po and214Po) by a detector (LR 115). The detection sensitivity of this method is 6 times greater than that of the conventional α track method.  相似文献

A sensitive technique is described, which permits, without chemical treatment, detection of radium (226Ra) in water in concentrations as low as 0.01 pCi·1−1. The determination is based on the emanation of radium daughter radon (222Rn) after it has achieved the radioactive equilibrium; it is then counted in a scintillation chamber. This procedure was applied to water samples from public water supplies in Hessia, Germany, for routine measurements. The radium concentration of 205 samples show log-normal distribution with a mean value of 0.11 pCi·1−1 and a geometric standard deviation of 2.6. Significantly higher results, between 0.12 and 14.6 pCi·1−1, were obtained for several samples of commercially available mineral water.

Measurement of soil-gas radon (Rn) concentration is an important parameter in estimating soil Rn potential for a building site. Typically, field methods for grab samples (as contrasted with continuous flow systems) using a protable alpha-scintillometer only considered222Rn (T 1/2= 3.8 d) and ignored220Rn (T 1/2=55 s). Now the calculation permits the determination of the concentrations of both isotopes with a single series of readings. A sample is collected and within 1 minute is introduced into the counting system. A series of 1 minute counts begins immediately and continues for 10 minutes. If high220Rn concentrations are present, there will be a rapid decay followed by a steady ingrowth of222Rn progeny. If very little220Rn is present, the ingrowth will be seen immediately. In either case, a non-linear least square fitting program from Statgraphics is used to obtain both concentrations at time zero. When inexact timings ranging from 1 to 30 seconds were imposed on the measured data, the method proved to be very robust; the biases did not exceed 15 percent.  相似文献

A time-saving and accurate technique for determining226Ra in groundwater and soil was examined, using high-resolution inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (HR-ICP-MS). The technique was applied to the determination of226Ra in groundwater and soil samples and compared with the conventional liquid scintillation counting method. This technique was capable of completing226Ra counting within 3 minutes, without the in-growth period to allow radon and its progeny to achieve secular equilibrium with the parent226Ra. The detection limits of HR-ICP-MS for226Ra in groundwater and soil were 0.19 mBq·1−1 and 0.75 Bq·kg−1, respectively, which were about 10 times lower than that of the liquid scintillation counter. The results obtained from HR-ICP-MS in groundwater and soil were in accordance with those of LSC within a relative error of about 13%.  相似文献

Spring waters used as spas may contain significant amounts of natural radionuclides, so, in some circunstances, a radiation protection issue can arise for the population and/or the spas workers. EU has identified some groups of employees to be exposed to natural radiation in the 1996 Euratom Directive. Among these are workers of thermal spas who may be exposed to high radiation doses due to high radon concentrations in indoor air. In order to evaluate the potencial risk of the spring waters used as spas, gross-α and gross-β activity, 226Ra and 222Rn concentration levels were measured in 82 spas all over the country. Gross-alpha and gross-beta concentrations ranged from LLD to 17 Bq·l−1 and from LLD to 60 Bq·l−1, respectively. 226Ra concentrations ranged from <4 to 3,660 mBq·l−1. 222Rn concentrations ranged from <4 to 1868 Bq·l−1. Correlations between 226Ra concentrations and gross-α activity were obtained.  相似文献

A multiple approach to the determination of radon fluxes from sediments   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Determination of sedimentary fluxes of222Rn via diffusion was required as an input for a mass balance model of radon in a freshwater lake. We obtained these fluxes by: (1) direct measurement in the laboratory using a simulated sediment bed and water column; (2) a “sediment equilibration” technique; and (3) porewater modeling. The first method, analogous to an in situ benthic chamber approach, uses direct observation of the increasing222Rn activity in water overlying a sediment bed packed in plastic columns. This allows one to directly measure the fluxes and determine the effective wet bulk sediment diffusion coefficient (D s). Radon flux estimates using these three techniques agreed to within approximately 10–15%.  相似文献

Alpha-counting of filters used to sample large volumes of air provides a convenient way of determining atmospheric concentrations of210Pb. Following decay of short-lived222Rn and220Rn progeny, alpha activity of the filters increases as210Pb decays to210Po. After transient equilibrium is reached at about 3 y, alpha activity diminishes with the 22.3 y halflife of210Pb. The degree of equilibrium between210Pb and210Po can be calculated subsequent to sampling, and the average concentration of210Pb in the air during the sampling period can be computed. Contributions to the total210Pb from ambient short-lived radon progeny are small, typically 2–4%. Using high volume air samplers with collection rates of 1.1–1.7 m3/min for 24 h periods, and using counting times of 2 h for 20 cm2 filter sections, we measured alpha counts ranging from 0.0100±0.0050 to 0.200±0.0200 dps. Periodic measurements on 100 of these filters over a 4 y period yielded mean210Pb levels with standard deviations less than ±15%. The method requires minimal sample preparation and can be used to determine past atmospheric210Pb concentrations on filters stored for up to 20 y and more.  相似文献

This paper presents the extent of thoron (220Rn) interference in the radon (222Rn) exhalation rate, measured by solid state nuclear track detector based ‘Can’ technique. Experiments were carried out following the standard procedure of ‘Can’ technique as well as active technique as a reference method for 222Rn and 220Rn exhalation measurements. It was found that 220Rn interference may lead to overestimation of 222Rn exhalation by a significant factor which can be as high as 12 depending upon the rate of 220Rn exhalation from samples.  相似文献

It proved possible to detect the precise location of large geological faults using the amount of40K and220Rn daughter gamma-rays and the amount of222Rn (measured in a scintillation chamber) which could be extracted from the soil using negative pressure. Both40K and228Th appear to be concentrated in fault gouge. The222Rn content extractable from the soil is a measure of permeability and is very low in the region of the fault due to clay-like fault gouge. The method was demonstrated successfully on the large Wellington fault at Upper Hutt, New Zealand.  相似文献

The present study presents an overview of the distribution of radon (222Rn) activity concentration in the groundwater samples and their annual effective dose exposure in the Varahi and Markandeya command areas. Radon measurement was made using Durridge RAD-7 radon-in-air monitor, using RAD H2O technique with closed loop aeration concept. The measured 222Rn activities in 16 groundwater samples of Varahi command area ranged between 0.2 ± 0.4 and 10.1 ± 1.7 Bq L−1 with an average value of 2.07 ± 0.84 Bq L−1, well within the EPA’s maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 11.1 Bq L−1. In contrast, the recorded 222Rn activities in 14 groundwater samples of Markandeya command area found to vary from 2.21 ± 1.66 to 27.3 ± 0.787 Bq L−1 with an average value of 9.30 ± 1.45 Bq L−1. 21.4% of the samples (sample no. RMR5, RMR11 and RMR12) in the Markandeya command area exceeded the EPA’s MCL of 11.1 Bq L−1 and it was found that some samples in both the command areas were found to have radon values close to MCL value. The spatial variation in the radon concentration in the Varahi and Markandeya command area were delineated by constructing the contour map. The total annual effective dose resulting from radon in groundwater of both Varahi and Markandeya command areas were significantly lower than the UNSCEAR and WHO recommended limit for members of the public of 1 mSv year−1.  相似文献
