Following on from our previous report that a monochlorobenzene solution of polymethylmethacrylate is useful for purifying and cutting single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and thinning SWNT bundles, we show in this report that polymer and residual amorphous carbon can be removed by burning in oxygen gas. The SWNTs thus obtained had many holes (giving them a worm-eaten look) and were thermally unstable. Such severe damage caused by oxidation is unusual for SWNTs; we think that they were chemically damaged during ultrasonication in the monochlorobenzene solution of polymethylmethacrylate. Multi-functionalized single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were prepared and applied as tumor cell targeting biological transporters. A positive charge was introduced on SWNTs to get high loading efficiency of fluorescein (FAM) labeled short double strands DNA (20 base pairs). The SWNTs were encapsulated with the folic acid modified phospholipids for active targeting into tumor cell. The tumor cell-targeting properties of these multi-functionalized SWNTs were investigated by active targeting into mouse ovarian surface epithelial cells. The experimental results show that these multi-functionalized SWNTs have good tumor cell targeting property.  相似文献

It has been reported that nanobubbles can be produced by ultrasonication. However, it remains unclear whether part of the contribution of ultrasonication on flotation performance can be attributed to the generation of nanobubbles. In this work, we systematically studied this point of ultrasonication by combining a series of techniques including flotation testing, AFM (atomic force microscope) measurement, and settling testing. AFM imaging showed that no surface nanobubbles were found at the HOPG-water interface before and after subjection to ultrasonication. Further, surface nanobubbles were generated with solution exchange before ultrasonciation and then they were subjected to ultrasonication. It was found that ultrasonication did not destroy the pre-existing surface nanobubbles at the HOPG (highly oriented pyrolytic graphite) -water interface. Settling tests and flotation tests indicate that ultrasonication has a negligible influence on the interaction between graphite particles and thus flotation performance. Nanobubbles were not one of the outcomes for ultrasonication.  相似文献

The motion and equilibrium distribution of water molecules adsorbed inside neutral and negatively charged singlewalled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been studied using molecular dynamics simulations (MDSs) at room temperature based on CHARMM (Chemistry at HARvard Molecular Mechanics) potential parameters. We find that water molecules have a conspicuous electropism phenomenon and regular tubule patterns inside and outside the charged tube wall. The analyses of the motion behaviour of water molecules in the radial and axial directions show that by charging the SWNT, the adsorption efficiency is greatly enhanced, and the electric field produced by the charged SWNTs prevents water molecules from flowing out of the nanotube. However, water molecules can travel through the neutral SWNT in a fluctuating manner. This indicates that by electrically charging and uncharging the SWNTs, one can control the adsorption and transport behaviour of polar molecules in SWNTs for using as a stable storage medium or long transport channels. The transport velocity can be tailored by changing the charge on the SWNTs, which may have a further application as modulatable transport channels.  相似文献

The switching of resistance between two discrete values, known as random telegraph noise (RTN), was observed in individual single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and C60-filled SWNTs (the so-called peapods). The RTN has been studied as a function of bias-voltage and gate-voltage as well as temperature. By analyzing the features of the RTN, we identify three different types of RTN existing in the SWNT related systems. While the RTN can be generated by the various charge traps in the vicinity of the SWNTs, the RTN for metallic SWNTs is mainly due to reversible defect motions between two metastable states, activated by inelastic scattering with ballistic electrons. On the other hand, the noise for peapods can be attributed to the motion of C60 molecules in hollow space of SWNTs.  相似文献

A non-destructive sorting method to separate single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) by diameter was recently proposed. By this method, SWNTs are suspended in water by surfactant encapsulation and the separation is carried out by ultracentrifugation in a density gradient. SWNTs of different diameters are distributed according to their densities along the centrifuge tube. A mixture of two anionic surfactants, namely sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) and sodium cholate (SC), presented the best performance in discriminating nanotubes by diameter. Unexpectedly, small diameter nanotubes are found at the low density part of the centrifuge tube. We present molecular dynamics studies of the water-surfactant-SWNT system to investigate the role of surfactants in the sorting process. We found that surfactants can actually be attracted towards the interior of the nanotube cage, depending on the relationship between the surfactant radius of gyration and the nanotube diameter. The dynamics at room temperature showed that, as the amphiphile moves to the hollow cage, water molecules are dragged together, thereby promoting the nanotube filling. The resulting densities of filled SWNT are in agreement with measured densities.  相似文献

Nanoparticles, when homogeneously dispersed in a base fluid, e.g. water, ethylene glycol etc. are commonly known as nanofluids. Nanofluids have gained attention in the scientific community for their enhanced thermal properties. One of the major problems in using nanofluids as a heat transfer medium for commercial applications is that, in most of the closed circuit industrial cooling processes, the cooling fluid has to be replaced after several cycles of cooling operation because of an increased presence of contaminants. If nanofluids were used as a coolant, it would be very hard to separate the nanoparticles from the waste fluid. The present work is aimed at the separation and recycling of nanoparticles from fluid waste by means of quick settling of titanium dioxide nanoparticles using silver nanoparticles along with ultrasonic treatment. It is observed that with increasing silver concentration and time of ultrasonication, the stability of the dispersion decreases. There is a value for both the silver concentration and ultrasonication time above which the settling time decreases drastically.  相似文献

In this work, polypropylene (PP) matrix reinforced with several single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) concentrations were prepared by a melt-mixing method. The effect of SWNTs on the thermal degradation behavior of polypropylene was studied by thermal gravimetric analysis. The results revealed that adding the SWNTs into the PP can increase the decomposition temperature. The results obtained from differential scanning calorimetry showed that incorporating SWNTs reduced the crystallinity but increased the crystallization temperature of the PP. The mechanical measurements showed that the tensile modulus of the nanocomposite was greatly enhanced to 882 MPa, compared to 485 MPa for pristine PP. For wide-angle X-ray diffraction tests, two cooling methods were used. The addition of SWNTs to the polymer in slow-cooled samples resulted in partial crystallization in the γ -form, while SWNTs had no effect in water-cooled samples, the sample crystallizing in the α -form. Scanning electron microscopy observations on the fracture surface of the nanocomposites showed the dispersion of the SWNTs in the nanocomposites.  相似文献

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are 1D nanostructures with distinct physical and chemical properties that have shown great promise for applications in many fields, including biomedicine. Since for biomedical application the water solubility is crucial and SWNTs have low solubility, various methods (including polymer and biopolymer wrapping, chemical modifications) have been developed to solubilize and disperse them in water. Due to their unique optical properties such as photoluminescence in the NIR and strong resonant Raman signatures, they can be used as nanoprobes in biomedical imaging and phototherapies. Furthermore, decoration of SWNTs with noble metal nanoparticles will induce an excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect of the nanoparticles-SWNTs composites, with applications in cell imaging. Herein, we present a new and facile strategy for the DNA-assisted decoration of SWNTs with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and their application in SERS imaging. By ultrasonication at room temperature of SWNTs with AuNPs functionalized with synthetic DNA, SWNT-AuNPs nanocomposites with enhanced Raman signal were obtained. Among the important advantages of the proposed method are the presence of the free DNA overhangs around the SWNT-AuNPs suitable for post-synthetic modification of nanocomposite through hybridization of complementary DNA strands containing molecules of interest attached by well-developed bio-conjugation chemistry.

The colloidal stability of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) sonicated at three different ultrasonication (US) frequencies (28, 580, and 1000 kHz) were investigated under environmentally relevant conditions. In particular, correlations between surface chemistry, electrokinetic potential, interaction energy, and the aggregation kinetics of the aqueous SWNTs were studied. We observed that H2O2 production is negatively correlated with the yield of hydroxylation and carboxylation of SWNTs, which was dependent on the generation of ultrasonic energy by cavity collapse during US process. The SWNTs sonicated at relatively high US frequencies (580 and 1000 kHz) aggregated rapidly in synthetic surface water, whereas alkalinity affected the stability of SWNTs insignificantly. This was because the SWNTs became less negatively charged under such conditions and were captured in deep primary energy wells, according to the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory. Critical coagulation concentration values for the ultrasonicated SWNTs were determined to be 102 mM NaCl for 28 kHz, 22 mM NaCl for 580 kHz, and 43 mM NaCl for 1000 kHz. Suwannee River humic acid decreased the aggregation rate of SWNTs due to the steric hindrance, because of adsorbed macromolecules. Our findings show that the aggregate stability of SWNTs is controlled largely by a complex interplay between the evolution of surface functional groups on the SWNTs during US and solution chemistry.  相似文献

The temporal evolution of fluorescence from isolated single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) has been investigated using optical Kerr gating. The fluorescence emission is found to decay on a time scale of 10 ps. This fast relaxation arises from nonradiative processes, the existence of which explains the relatively low observed fluorescence efficiency in isolated SWNTs. From the measured decay rate and a determination of fluorescence quantum efficiency, we deduce a radiative lifetime of 110 ns.  相似文献

In this work, the influence factors, namely chirality, temperature, radius and surface chemical modification, of the interaction energy for polyethylene (PE) molecule encapsulated into single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) had been investigated by molecular mechanics (MM) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The results showed that all these factors would influence the interaction energy between PE and SWNTs. The interaction energy between PE molecule and the armchair SWNTs is largest among eight kinds of chiral SWNTs. The interaction energy decreases with the increase of temperature or the SWNT radius. The methyl, phenyl, hydroxyl, carboxyl, -F, and amino groups, have been introduced onto the surface of the SWNTs by the simulation software and the influence of SWNT chemical modification has also been investigated. The interaction energy between PE and chemically modified SWNTs is larger than that between PE and pristine SWNTs, and increases with increasing the concentration of the modified groups monotonously. In addition, the group electronegativity and van der Waals force will affect the interaction energy between PE and chemically modified SWNTs greatly, which can be attributed to the electronic structures of the chemically modified groups. This study can provide some useful suggestions for the composite material design and drug transport.  相似文献

Nanofluids’ thermophysical properties and heat transfer performance has been investigated for many years, while research on their surface tension (ST) and wetting behavior is very limited. To assess nanofluids potential as industrial products, a complete picture is required to prove their performance in a specific application. Boiling heat transfer, microfluidics and drug development are among the applications where ST is a variable. ST of water-based ZnO nanofluids were measured in the presence and absence of direct ultrasonication. The experiments covered variation of ST with ZnO concentration (0.05–0.4 vol%), ultrasonication amplitude (40% and 100%) and duration. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report of ST– ultrasonication process relation for a nanofluid. Results showed that after direct ultrasonication, nanofluids ST is strongly affected by the temperature raise, and in those cases relative ST may provide a clearer picture. A nano-film over individual and agglomerated nanoparticles spotted via TEM imaging was affected from the ultrasonication. Such a nano-film can play a key role in the anomalous thermal transport and wettability of nanofluids. Statistical analyses revealed that changes in ultrasonication amplitude resulted in a statistically significance difference on nanofluid ST and relative ST. Changes in nanoparticle concentration caused a significant difference on the nanofluid ST while the difference in relative ST was insignificant. Variation of ultrasonication duration caused significant variations on the relative ST while the difference in nanofluid ST was not significant. This work highlights that based on specific applications ST and other related features of any nanofluid can be adjusted employing proper ultrasonication conditions.  相似文献

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been grown on silicon nanowires (SiNWs) by ethanol chemical vapor deposition (CVD) with Co catalysts. We have found that a surface SiOx layer of SiNWs is necessary for the formation of active Co catalysts. In fact, the yield of the SWNT/SiNW heterojunctions gradually decreases as the thickness of the surface SiOx layer decreases. Since thin SiNWs are transparent to an electron beam, the Co nanoparticles on SiNWs can be easily observed as well as SWNTs by TEM. Therefore, the relationship between the diameters of each SWNT and its catalyst nanoparticle has been investigated. The diameters of SWNTs are equal to or slightly smaller than those of the catalyst nanoparticles.  相似文献

Ultrasound in organic electrosynthesis   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Mechanical effects induced by ultrasonication can be very helpful for the activation of electrochemical reactions. The continuous cleaning of the electrodes by ultrasound irradiation of the electrochemical cell or the enhancement of mass transfer at the electrodes are examples of such activation. Finally, ultrasonication can play an important part for the orientation of reactions whose selectivities are very sensitive to stirring. Two very different examples have been chosen to illustrate these phenomena: the indirect electrooxidation of di-ketone-L-sorbose into the corresponding ketogulonic acid and the direct electroreduction of acetophenone into pinacol.  相似文献

Microalgae are a promising feedstock for the production of biofuels, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, due to their superior capability of converting solar energy and CO2 into lipids, proteins, and other valuable bioactive compounds. To facilitate the release of these important biomolecules from microalgae, effective cell disruption is usually necessary, where the use of ultrasound has gained tremendous interests as an alternative to traditional methods. This review not only summarizes the mechanisms of and operation parameters affecting cell disruption, but also takes an insight into measuring techniques, synergistic integration with other disruption methods, and challenges of ultrasonication for microalgal biorefining. Optimal conditions including ultrasonic frequency, intensity, and duration, and liquid viscosity and sonochemical reactor are the key factors for maximizing the disruption and extraction efficiency. A combination of ultrasound with other disruption methods such as ozonation, microwave, homogenization, enzymatic lysis, and solvents facilitates cell disruption and release of target compounds, thus provides powerful solutions to commercial scale-up of ultrasound extraction for microalgal biorefining. It is concluded that ultrasonication is a sustainable “green” process, but more research and work are needed to upscale this process without sacrificing performance or consuming more energy.  相似文献

This paper describes a new method to create nanoscale SiO2 pits or channels using single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in an HF solution at room temperature within a few seconds. Using aligned SWNT arrays, a pattern of nanoscale SiO2 channels can be prepared. The nanoscale SiO2 patterns can also be created on the surface of three-dimensional (3D) SiO2 substrate and even the nanoscale trenches can be constructed with arbitrary shapes. A possible mechanism for this enhanced etching of SiO2 has been qualitatively analysed using defects in SWNTs, combined with H3O+ electric double layers around SWNTs in an HF solution.  相似文献

The present study is focused on the synthesis and investigation of the nanocomposite CuI@SWNT obtained by the filling of metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) (inner diameter 1–1.4 nm) by wide-gap semiconducting CuI nanocrystals using so-called capillary technique. The method is based on the impregnation of pre-opened SWNTs by molten CuI in vacuum with subsequent slow cooling to room temperature. SWNTs and CuI@SWNT nanocomposites were studied by nitrogen capillary adsorption method, EDX microanalysis, HRTEM microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The changing of electronic properties of CuI@SWNT as compare to row nanotubes was observed.  相似文献
