The uncontrolled aggregation of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) particulate fillers and their uneven distribution within polymer matrices can have adverse effects on the properties of ACP composites. In this article, we assessed the influence of nonionic and anionic surfactants and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) introduced during the preparation of ACP on the particle size distribution and compositional properties of ACP. In addition, the mechanical strength of polymeric composites utilizing such fillers with a photo‐activated binary methacrylate resin was evaluated. Zirconia‐hybridized ACP (Zr‐ACP) filler and its corresponding composite served as controls for this study. Surfactant‐ and PEO‐ACPs had an average water content of 16.8% by mass. Introduction of the anionic surfactant reduced the median particle diameter about 45% (4.1 µm versus 7.4 µm for the Zr‐ACP control). In the presence of PEO, however, the dm increased to 14.1 µm. There was no improvement in the biaxial flexure strength (BFS) in any of the dry composite specimens prepared with the surfactant and/or PEO‐ACPs compared to those formulated with Zr‐ACP. The BFS of wet composite specimens decreased by 50% or more after a month‐long exposure to saline solutions. Other types of surfactants and/or polymers as well as alternative surface modification protocols need to be explored for their potential to provide better dispersion of ACP into the matrix resin and better mechanical performance ACP composites.  相似文献

The effect of types of fillers on mechanical properties of rigid polyurethane composite samples was investigated. Polyurethane (PU) composites were prepared using a molasses polyol (MP, a mixture of molasses and polyethylene glycol, Mw=200) diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and fillers. The following plant particles, bamboo powder, roast bamboo powder, wood meal, coffee grounds, ground coffee bean parchment and cellulose powder, were used as fillers. The mixture of MP and fillers was reacted with MDI by adding an adequate amount of acetone as a solvent. The content of fillers was defined as the ratio of filler weight to total weight of polyol and fillers. The filler content was varied from 10 to 90 wt%. Polyurethane (PU) composites were prepared using fillers with MP. Lengths of major axis and minor axis for each particle regarded as an ellipse were measured using an optical microscope. Averages of diameter and aspect ratio were derived for each plant particle. The relationships between these average values and the mechanical properties, such as strength and elastic modulus, determined by the compression tests were investigated. The effect of filler content was estimated using the apparent volume ratio which is determined as the ratio of the apparent volume of fillers to the reciprocal values of the apparent density of samples. The master curves of the relationships between the specific values of mechanical properties and the apparent volume ratio were obtained. It was found that the compression strength and the elastic modulus for composite samples with different fillers showed maximum values at average aspect ratio around 3. It was also found that the apparent volume ratio, where the mechanical properties showed maximums, decreases with increasing aspect ratio. Using master curves, it is possible to evaluate the mechanical properties of plant particle filled polyurethane composites are described.  相似文献

Thermal management is an important parameter in an electronic packaging application. In this work, three different types of fillers such as natural graphite powder (Gr) of 50‐μm particle size, boron nitride powder (h‐BN) of 1‐μm size, and silver flakes (Ag) of 10‐μm particle size were used for thermal conductivity enhancement of neat epoxy resin. The thermal properties, rheology, and lap shear strength of the neat epoxy and its composite were investigated. The analysis showed that the loading of different wt% of Gr‐based fillers can effectively increase the thermal conductivity of the epoxy resin. It has also been observed that the thermal conductivity of the hybrid filler (Gr/h‐BN/Ag) reinforced epoxy adhesive composite increased six times greater than that of neat epoxy resin composite. Further, the viscosity of hybrid filler reinforced epoxy resin was found to be increased as compared with its virgin counterpart. The adhesive composite with optimized filler content was then subsequently subjected to determine single lap shear strength. The degree of filler dispersion and alignment in the matrix were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis.  相似文献

DOPO and boron nitride (BN) fillers with different particle sizes and several loadings were employed to improve the properties of cyanate ester (CE) resin. The effects of BN content and particle size on the thermal conductivity of the BN‐DOPO/CE ternary composites were discussed. The influence of enhancing the thermal conductivity of the ternary composites on their flame retardancy was studied. The consequences showed that increasing the thermal conductivity of BN‐DOPO/CE composites had an active impact on their flame retardancy. Approving flame retardancy of the ternary composites was certified by the high limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 rating of V‐0, and low heat release rate (HRR) and total heat release (THR). For instance, in contrast with pure CE matrix, peak of HRR (pk‐HRR), average of HRR (av‐HRR), THR, and average of effective heat of combustion (av‐EHC) of CEP/BN0.5 μm/10 composite were decreased by 51.7%, 33.8%, 18.7%, and 18.9%, respectively. Thermal gravimetry analysis (TGA) showed that the addition of BN fillers improves the thermal stability of the composites. Moreover, the ternary composites possess good dielectric properties. Their dielectric constants (ε) are less than 3, and dielectric loss tangent (tgδ) values are lower than neat CE resin.  相似文献

In the study walnut shells (WS) and silanized walnut shells (S_WS) were used as cellulosic fillers for novel polyurethane (PU) composite foams. The impact of 1, 2 and 5 wt% of WS and S_WS on the foaming parameters, mechanical and thermo-mechanical properties of obtained materials were evaluated. The results have shown that compared to untreated WS filler, the application of S_WS leads to PU foams with more regular structure and improved physico-mechanical behavior of PU materials. For example, compared to controlled WS_0 foam, PU foams enhanced with 1 wt% of the S_WS exhibited better mechanical properties, such as higher compressive strength (~15% of improvement), better impact strength (~6% of improvement), and improved tensile strength (~9% of improvement). The addition of S_WS improved the thermomechanical stability of PU foams. This work provides a better understanding of a relationship between the surface modification of the walnut shell filler and the mechanical, insulating and thermal properties of the PU composites. Due to these positive and beneficial effects, it can be stated that the use of WS and S_WS as natural fillers in PU composite foams can promote a new application path in converting agricultural waste into useful resources for creating a new class of green materials.  相似文献

We established a novel, easy, and versatile method of obtaining diverse and controllable interphases between epoxy resin and fillers. The method involved the co‐deposition of polydopamine (PDA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) with different molecular lengths on boron nitride (BN) surface. The obtained PDA/PEI‐modified BN composites showed significantly improved mechanical properties, including tensile strength, toughness, and elongation at break. For example, the tensile strength, fracture toughness, and elongation at break of EP composite increased by 51%, 132%, and 170% compared with EP when the PEI molecular weight was 10 000, respectively. These results suggested that the interphases between BN and EP matrix can be adjusted by changing the molecular lengths of grafted modifiers, thereby offering a new method for the reasonable designing and exploitation of the BN‐based composite materials.  相似文献

Commercial-grade polypropylene was modified with a specific nucleation agent based on an amide of dicarboxylic acid, which promotes crystallization predominantly in the β-phase. The resulting material was used as a matrix for composites containing 10%, 20%, and 30% (by weight) of different calcium carbonate fillers. These fillers differed in particle size and surface treatment. The β-phase content, morphology and tensile mechanical properties were investigated. A distinct β-nucleation activity was found with surface-treated fillers; nevertheless, to obtain stiff and reasonably ductile composite materials, a matrix containing a critical nucleant concentration (0.03 wt%) was necessary.  相似文献

To improve the mechanical and tribological performance, two kinds of wollastonite fillers (fine or coarse) and short carbon fibers (5–15 vol %) were, respectively, incorporated into an epoxy resin. Fine wollastonite fillers remarkably enhanced the flexural modulus, strength, and toughness of the resin at some filler contents (i.e., 10 vol %) simultaneously, while coarse wollastonite fillers and short carbon fibers impaired most of mechanical properties except the modulus. The small particle size, low aspect ratio as well as the good adhesion to the epoxy matrix of the fine wollastonite particles are believed to be responsible for the improved strength and toughness. Tribological tests were performed under sliding and low amplitude oscillating wear conditions. All fillers enhanced the wear resistance and reduced the sliding coefficient of friction but to a different extent. Under sliding wear conditions, fine wollastonite particle‐filled epoxy displayed the highest wear resistance because of the formation of an effective transfer film and the low abrasiveness of the fillers. Under low amplitude oscillating wear conditions, both wollastonite fillers showed much higher wear resistance than short carbon fibers regardless of the filler content. The better adhesion between the wollastonite fillers and the epoxy matrix is responsible for the higher wear resistance under oscillating conditions. The wear tracks were inspected by microscopy to analyze the corresponding wear mechanisms. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 44: 854–863, 2006  相似文献

An electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding composite based on ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) loaded with economical graphite-carbon black (CB) hybrid fillers was prepared via a green and facile methodology, i.e., high-speed mechanical mixing combined with hot compression thus avoiding the assistance of the intensive ultrasound dispersion in volatile organic solvents. In this composite, the graphite-CB hybrid fillers were selectively distributed in the interfacial regions of UHMWPE domains resulting a typical segregated structure. Thanks to the specific morphology of segregated conductive networks along with the synergetic effect of large-sized graphite flakes and small-sized CB nanoparticles, a low filler loading of 7.7 vol% (15 wt%) yielded the graphite-CB/UHMWPE composites with a satisfactory electrical conductivity of 33.9 S/m and a superior shielding effectiveness of 40.2 dB, manifesting the comparable value of the pricey large-aspect-ratio carbon nanofillers (e.g., carbon nanotubes and graphene nanosheets) based polymer composites. More interestingly, with the addition of 15 wt% graphite-CB (1/3, W/W) hybrid fillers, the tensile strength and elongation at break of the composite reached 25.3 MPa and 126%, respectively; with a remarkable increase of 58.1% and 2420% over the conventional segregated graphite/UHMWPE composites. The mechanical reinforcement could be attributed to the favor of the small-sized CB particles in the polymer molecular diffusion between UHMWPE domains which in turn provided a stronger interfacial adhesion. This work provides a facile, green and affordable strategy to obtain the polymer composites with high electrical conductivity, efficient EMI shielding, and balanced mechanical performance.  相似文献

The thermal and mechanical performance of composites with nano-sized cotton fillers embedded in low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is investigated. Microfibrillated cotton was prepared by microgrinding mechanical treatment of pulverized cotton (pCot) derived from waste T-shirts, resulting in nano-sized fibrils of the cellulose that retain high crystallinity. Film composites of LDPE with pCot before and after microgrinding were fabricated through melt extrusion and the effect of filler size on mechanical, thermal and morphological properties of the composite was investigated. Compounding microfibrillated cotton with LDPE resulted in well-dispersed nanocomposites with no discoloration after 10 min of melt extrusion at 170 °C. At concentrations up to 10 % by weight, the composites showed increased modulus, increased tensile strength and a slight decrease in elongation to break. Further improvement in the dispersion and mechanical properties of the cotton-based fillers was realized by the use of LDPE powder instead of polymer pellets fed to the extruder. This research demonstrates the processing and applicability of the use of recycled cotton-based nano-sized fillers in melt-processing.  相似文献

In this work, dodecylamine‐modified graphene nanosheets (DA‐GNSs) and γ‐aminopropyl‐triethoxysilane‐treated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (f‐MWCNTs) are employed to prepare cyanate ester (CE) thermally conductive composites. By adding 5 wt% DA‐GNSs or f‐MWCNTs to the CE resin, the thermal conductivities of the composites became 3.2 and 2.5 times that of the CE resin, respectively. To further improve the thermal conductivity, a mixture of the two fillers was utilized. A remarkable synergetic effect between the DA‐GNSs and f‐MWCNTs on improving the thermal conductivity of CE resin composites was demonstrated. The composite containing 3 wt% hybrid filler exhibited a 185% increase in thermal conductivity compared with pure CE resin, whereas composites with individual DA‐GNSs and f‐MWCNTs exhibited increases of 158 and 108%, respectively. Moreover, the composite with hybrid filler retained high electrical resistivity. Scanning electron microscopy images of the composite morphologies showed that the modified graphene nanosheets (GNSs) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were uniformly dispersed in the CE matrix, and a number of junction points among MWCNTs and between MWCNTs and GNSs formed in the composites with hybrid fillers. Generally, we can conclude that these composites filled with hybrid fillers may be promising materials of further improving the thermal conductivity of CE composites. Nano-hydroxyapatite (HA) particles were prepared by a sol–gel method and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) composite materials containing a various amount of lab-prepared HA fillers had been successfully synthesized via an in situ synthesis process. The materials structure was characterized by infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and the mechanical performance was investigated by a tensile strength test. The tensile strength of HA/PEEK composites reaches an optimal 108 MPa at 6.1% HA content. The composites with HA content below 17.4% exhibit a plastic break mode, while a brittle break mode above 17.4%. The results exhibit that the strong bonding between hydroxyapatite fillers and PEEK matrix has been achieved. And it was proved that this strong bonding may be mainly attributed to the physical factors, such as mechanical interlock between PEEK molecules and HA surface. The study clearly demonstrates that in situ synthesized HA/PEEK composite materials have the potential for use as an alternative material for hard tissue replacement.  相似文献

Thermo‐mechanically durable industrial polymer nanocomposites have great demand as structural components. In this work, highly competent filler design is processed via nano‐modified of micronic SiO2/Al2O3 particulate ceramics and studied its influence on the rheology, glass transition temperature, composite microstructure, thermal conductivity, mechanical strength, micro hardness, and tribology properties. Composites were fabricated with different proportions of nano‐modified micro‐composite fillers in epoxy matrix at as much possible filler loadings. Results revealed that nano‐modified SiO2/Al2O3 micro‐composite fillers enhanced inter‐particle network and offer benefits like homogeneous microstructures and increased thermal conductivity. Epoxy composites attained thermal conductivity of 0.8 W/mK at 46% filler loading. Mechanical strength and bulk hardness were reached to higher values on the incorporation of nano‐modified fillers. Tribology study revealed an increased specific wear rate and decreased friction coefficient in such fillers. The study is significant in a way that the design of nano‐modified mixed‐matrix micro‐composite fillers are effective where a high loading is much easier, which is critical for achieving desired thermal and mechanical properties for any engineering applications. The influence of the chemical modification of carbon nanotubes on the mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of poly(butylene terephthalate)-based composites was investigated. Polymer composites based on poly(butylene terephthalate) were obtained via in situ polymerisation or extrusion. Commercially available multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Nanocyl NC7000) at different loadings (mass %: 0.05, 0.25, 1, 2) were used as fillers. The functionalisation process took place under a chlorine atmosphere followed by a reaction with sodium hydroxide. The effect of carbon nanotube modification was analysed according to the changes in the polymer thermal and mechanical properties. An addition of modified carbon nanotubes in the amount of 0.05 mass % improved the mechanical properties of the composites in terms of both Young’s modulus and tensile strength by 5–10 % and 17–30 % compared with composites with unmodified carbon nanotubes and neat poly(butylene terephthalate), respectively. The in situ method of composite preparation was a more effective technique for enhancing the matrix-filler interactions, although a significantly lower amount of fillers were used than in the extrusion method.  相似文献

In the present study, a model is presented to optimize the fabrication parameters of natural fiber reinforced polyester matrix composites with dual fillers. In particular, jute fiber mat was chosen as reinforcement and eggshell powder (ESP) and montmorillonite nanoclay (NC) were selected as fillers. The weight per square meter (GSM) of the fiber, the weight percentage of ESP and NC have been chosen as independent variables and the influence of these variables on tensile, flexural and impact strength of the composite has been inspected. The permutations of the different combinations of factors are intended to accomplish higher interfacial strength with the lowest possible number of tested specimens. The experiments were designed by the Taguchi strategy and a novel multi-objective optimization technique named COPRAS (COmplex PRoportional ASsessment of alternatives) was used to determine the optimal parameter combinations. Affirmation tests were performed with the optimal parameter settings and the mechanical properties were evaluated and compared. Experimental results show that fiber GSM and eggshell powder content are significant variables that improve mechanical strength, while the nanoclay appears less important.  相似文献

The effect of incorporating sorbic acid (SA), an echo-friendly curing agent, and silica or carbon black (CB) filler, as well as gamma irradiation on the physico-chemical, mechanical and thermal properties of ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber (EPDM) was investigated. The results indicated that the developed composites revealed improvement in the studied parameters over the untreated samples. Filler incorporation into rubber matrix has been proven a key factor in enhancing the swelling resistance, tensile strength and thermal properties of the fabricated composites. The improvement in tensile strength and modulus was attributed to better interfacial bonding via SA. Alternatively, a comparison was established between the performance of the white and black fillers. The utmost mechanical performance was reported for the incorporated ratios 10 phr SA and 40 phr white filler into a 50 kGy irradiated composite. Meanwhile, the incorporation of CB yielded better thermally stable composites than those filled with silica at similar conditions.  相似文献

Lightweight conductive polymers are considered for lightning strike mitigation in composites by synthesizing intrinsically conductive polymers (ICPs) and by the inclusion of conductive fillers in insulating matrices. Conductive films based on polyaniline (PANI) and graphene have been developed to improve through‐thickness conductivity of polymer composites. The result shows that the conductivity of PANI enhanced by blending polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and PANI in 3:1 ratio. Conductive composite thin films are prepared by dispersing graphene in PANI. The conductivity of composite films was found to increase by 40× at 20 wt% of graphene inclusion compared with PVP and PANI blend. Fourier‐transform‐infrared (FTIR) spectra confirmed in situ polymerization of the polymer blend. The inclusion of graphene also exhibits an increase in Tg by 21°C. Graphene additions also showed an increase in thermal stability by approximately 148°C in the composite films. The mechanical result obtained from DMA shows that inclusion of graphene increases the tensile strength by 48% at 20 wt% of graphene reinforcement. A thin, highly conductive surface that is compatible with a composite resin system can enhance the surface conductivity of composites, improving its lightning strike mitigation capabilities.  相似文献

Water hyacinth and its mechanical pulps were used as lignocellulose to produce composites together with polystyrene or urea-formaldehyde resins. The bending strength of the composites increased with increasing concentration of the resin. The temperatures of the treatment of water hyacinth to obtain the pulps affect the strength and densities of the composites. This may be attributed to the behavior of lignin at temperatures higher than 135°C. The composites produced using urea-formaldehyde resins showed slight increase in bending strengths compared with those produced using polystyrene, which may be attributed to the ability of formaldehyde to make crosslinks with the free OH groups of cellulose and hemicellulose. Contrary to water hyacinth, the use of ground palm leaves together with 10% urea-formaldehyde resin produced composite with high density and low bending strength, while the ground water hyacinth failed. The pulp from palm leaves when processed into composites using 10% urea-formaldehyde resin show bending and densities affected by its preparation and by the amount of the composite mixture to be pressed. Hence the type of the substrate defined the type of the polymers or resin used to obtain composites with proper mechanical properties. The effect of the pressure used to produce composites from ground palm leaves or their pulp together with polystyrene was investigated. Linear relationships between the bending strength and pressure were obtained, the bending strength and densities increasing with increasing pressure. Thus, the increased pressures enhance mechanical properties of the composites.  相似文献
