The colloid stability of supramolecular assemblies composed of the synthetic cationic lipid dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) supported on polystyrene amidine (PSA) microspheres was evaluated via turbidimetry kinetics, dynamic light scattering for particle sizing, zeta-potential analysis, and determination of DODAB adsorption on CMC-covered particles. At 0.1 g L(-1) CMC and 2 x 10(11) PSA particles/mL, CMC did not induce significant particle flocculation, and a vast majority of CMC-covered single particles were present in the dispersion so that this was the condition chosen for determining DODAB concentration (C) effects on particle size and zeta potentials. At 0.35 mM DODAB, charge neutralization, maximal size, and visible precipitation indicated extensive flocculation and minimal colloid stability for the DODAB/CMC/PSA assembly. At 0.1 g L(-1) CMC, isotherms of high affinity for DODAB adsorption on CMC-covered particles presented a plateau at a limiting adsorption of 700 x 10(17) DODAB molecules adsorbed per square meter PSA which was well above bilayer deposition on a smooth particle surface. The polyelectrolyte layer on hydrophobic particles was swelled and fluffy (ca. 11-nm hydrodynamic thickness), and maximal adsorption of DODAB lipid onto this layer produced a compressed composite cationic film with 20 mV of zeta potential and about 10-nm mean thickness. The assembly of cationic lipid/CMC layer/polymeric particle was stable only well above charge neutralization of the polyelectrolyte by the cationic lipid, at relatively large lipid concentrations (at and above 1 mM DODAB) with charge neutralization leading to extensive particle aggregation.  相似文献

The colloid stability of supramolecular assemblies composed of the synthetic anionic lipid sodium dihexadecyl phosphate (DHP) on cationic poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) supported on polystyrene sulfate (PSS) microspheres was evaluated via turbidimetry kinetics, dynamic light scattering for particle sizing, zeta-potential analysis, and determination of DHP adsorption on PDDA-covered particles. At 0.05 g/L PDDA and 5 x 10(9) PSS particles/mL, PDDA did not induce significant particle flocculation and a vast majority of PDDA covered single particles were present in the dispersion so that this was the condition chosen for determining DHP concentration (C) effects on particle size and zeta-potentials. At 0.8 mM DHP, charge neutralization, maximal size, and visible precipitation indicated extensive flocculation and minimal colloid stability for the DHP/PDDA/PSS assembly. At 0.05 g L(-1) PDDA, isotherms of high affinity for DHP adsorption on PDDA-covered particles presented a plateau at a limiting adsorption of 135 x 10(19) DHP molecules adsorbed per square meter PSS which was well above bilayer deposition on a smooth particle surface. The polyelectrolyte layer on hydrophobic particles was swelled and fluffy yielding ca. 6 +/- 1.5 nm hydrodynamic thickness. Maximal and massive adsorption of DHP lipid onto this layer produced polydisperse DHP/PDDA/PSS colloidal particles with low colloid stability and which, at best, remained aggregated as doublets over a range of large lipid concentrations so that it was not possible to evaluate the mean total thickness for the deposited film. The assembly anionic lipid/cationic PDDA layer/polymeric particle was relatively stable as particle doublets only well above charge neutralization of the polyelectrolyte by the anionic lipid, at relatively large lipid concentrations (above 1 mM DHP) with charge neutralization leading to extensive particle aggregation.  相似文献

The adsorption of Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) on boehmite, gamma-AlO(OH), has been examined by both macroscopic adsorption and in situ ATR-FTIR spectroscopic techniques. At a SRFA concentration approaching surface saturation (F = 5.3 micromol m(-2)), adsorption is at a maximum at low pH and decreases as pH is increased. The ATR-FTIR spectral features of adsorbed SRFA are very similar to those measured approximately 1-2 pH units higher in solution, indicating that (i) the SRFA appears to be predominantly adsorbed at the boehmite/water interface in an outer-sphere complexation mode and (ii) the positively charged boehmite/water interface stabilizes SRFA molecules against protonation at low pH.

The adsorption of Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) and Pahokee peat humic acid (PPHA) at the boehmite (gamma-AlOOH)/water interface and the impact of SRFA on boehmite dissolution have been examined over a wide range of solution pH conditions (pH 2-12), SRFA surface coverages (Gamma(SRFA), total SRFA binding site concentration normalized by the boehmite surface area) of 0.0-5.33 micromol m(-2), and PPHA surface coverages (Gamma(PPHA), PPHA binding site concentration normalized by boehmite surface area) of 0.0-4.0 micromol m(-2), using macroscopic adsorption and in situ attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. At relatively high SRFA surface coverages (Gamma(SRFA) = 5.33 micromol m(-2)), in situ ATR-FTIR spectral features of adsorbed SRFA are very similar to those measured for SRFA in solution at approximately 1-3 pH units higher. At sub-monolayer surface coverages (Gamma(SRFA) = 1.20 and 2.20 micromol m(-2)), several new peaks and enhancements of the intensities of a number of existing peaks are observed. The latter spectral changes arise from several nonorganic extrinsic species (i.e., adsorbed carbonate and water, for alkaline solution conditions), partially protonated SRFA carboxyl functional groups (near-neutral pH conditions), and small quantities of inner-spherically adsorbed SRFA carboxyl groups and/or Al(III)-SRFA complexes (for acidic conditions). The spectra of PPHA adsorbed at boehmite/water interfaces also showed changes generally consistent with our observations for SRFA sorbed on boehmite. These observations confirm that SRFA and PPHA are predominantly adsorbed at the boehmite/water interface in an outer-sphere fashion, with minor inner-sphere adsorption complexes being formed only under quite acidic conditions. They also suggest that the positively charged boehmite/water interface stabilizes SRFA and PPHA carboxyl functional groups against protonation at lower pH. Measurements of the concentration of dissolved Al(III) ions in the absence and presence of SRFA showed that the boehmite dissolution process is clearly inhibited by the adsorption of SRFA, which is consistent with previous observations that outer-spherically adsorbed organic anions inhibit Al-(oxyhydr)oxide dissolution.  相似文献

The luminescent colloids have been synthesized through the layer-by-layer assembly of poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) onto the luminescent core. The latter has been obtained by the reprecipitation of complex Eu[(TTA)(3)1] (where TTA(-) and 1 are thenoyltrifluoroacetonate and 2-(5-chlorophenyl-2-hydroxy)-2-phenylethenyl-bis-(2-methoxyphenyl)phosphine oxide, respectively) from organic solvent to aqueous solution. The variation of Eu(III) complexes indicates the role of the complex core in the development of such core-shell colloids. Complex Eu[(TTA)(3)1] is most convenient precursor of Eu-doped luminescent nanocomposites. The fluorometric measurements at each step of the layer-by-layer polyelectrolyte assembly onto Eu[(TTA)(3)1] core, at various pHs and additives reveal the quenching of Eu-centered luminescence as a result of the interfacial interaction of the core and the dye. The AFM images and electrochemical behavior of PSS-(PEI-PSS)(n)-Eu[(TTA)(3)1] colloids deposited on the surface indicate the stability of the polyelectrolyte multilayer in the dried state.  相似文献

The interaction between composite colloidal particles composed of a spherical core and grafted AB-diblock polyampholytes (diblock copolymers with oppositely charged blocks) are investigated by using a coarse-grained model solved with Monte Carlo simulations. The B block is end-grafted onto the core of the colloid and its linear charge density is varied, whereas the linear charge density of the A block is fixed. The brush structure of a single colloid, the mean force between two colloids, and the structure of solutions of such colloids have been determined for different linear charge densities of the B blocks and block lengths. Many features of the present system are controlled by the charge of the B blocks. In the limit of uncharged B blocks, (i) the grafted chains are stretched and form an extended polyelectrolyte brush, (ii) a strong repulsive force is operating between two colloids, (iii) and the solution is thermodynamic stable and displays strong spatial correlation among the colloids. In the limit where the charges of the two types of blocks exactly compensate each other, (i) the chains are collapsed and form a polyelectrolyte complex surrounding the cores, (ii) an attractive force appears between two colloids, and (iii) strong colloid clustering appears in the solution. These features become more pronounced as the length of the polymer blocks is increased, and a phase instability occurs at sufficiently long chains. A comparison with properties for other related colloidal particles is also provided.  相似文献

Adsorption of cationic polyelectrolyte, a homopolymer of maleimide propyl trimethylammonium chloride (MPTMAC), on silica nanoparticles from aqueous solution was studied. The adsorbed amount of MPTMAC and the adsorption layer thickness from solutions of different pH, polyelectrolyte concentration, salt type, and salt concentration were measured. The adsorbed amount exhibited a maximum as a function of the electrolyte concentration. The onset of the decline in the adsorbed amount depended on the type of counterions. The thickness of the adsorption layer increased gradually with increased of electrolyte concentration and leveled off at high electrolyte concentration. The enhanced adsorption in the presence of Na2SO4 can be explained by the bivalent SO4(2-) causing a better shielding effect. With increasing pH the adsorbed amount of MPTMAC increased, whereas the thickness of an adsorbed layer of MPTMAC decreased. At low polyelectrolyte concentrations unstable silica suspensions were observed from a stability test. At high polyelectrolyte concentrations the higher particle coverage caused electrosteric stabilization of the dispersion. However, further increase in MPTMAC concentration after saturated adsorption would flocculate the dispersed system. At low pH, MPTMAC tending to create a loops or tails conformation stabilized the suspension.  相似文献

Present developments in the field of bioscience will profit from the fabrication of multilayer films of polyelectrolytes on colloids as well as of nano- and microsized capsules. The single particle light-scattering technique is suitable for process control. This paper describes the mode of operation and efficiency of a laboratory-built single particle light-scattering photometer, which opens up new possibilities in applications, especially in the field of bioscience. This has been achieved by improving the measurement capabilities of organic particle sizes near 100 nm and precision of thickness changes of about 0.5 nm. Besides the classic applications, such as particle size distribution measurements at high resolution and the coagulation kinetics of colloids, the measurement of the layer-by-layer polyelectrolyte adsorption at colloid particle surfaces and the fabrication of colloidal carriers is introduced. The described method is also a precise method for controlling the removal of the latex core to obtain multilayer microcapsules.  相似文献

The structure of the multilayer assemblies of yttrium iron garnet nanoparticles (YIG) with polyelectrolytes was investigated with the emphasis on the control of the particle density in the adsorption layers. It was found that the growth of YIG films prepared by the layer-by-layer assembly can occur via two deposition modes: (1) sequential adsorption of densely packed adsorption layers (normal growth mode) and (2) in-plane growth of isolated particle domains (lateral expansion mode). Importantly, the dependence of the optical density on the number of deposition cycles remains linear in both cases. Microscopy results indicate that the origin of the lateral growth is in the interplay of particle/particle and particle/polyelectrolyte interactions rather than in a substrate effect. The lateral expansion mode is a general attribute of the layer-by-layer deposition and can be observed for various aqueous colloids. For the preparation of sophisticated multifunctional assemblies on nanoparticles, the film growth via domain expansion should be avoided, and therefore, one must be able to control the growth pattern. The switch from lateral to normal growth mode can be effected by grafting charged organic groups to YIG nanoparticles. Hydrophobic interactions between the hydrocarbon groups of the modified YIG and polyelectrolyte significantly increase the attractive component of the particle/polyelectrolyte and particle/particle interactions. The films from modified YIG display densely packed nanoparticle layers with a greatly reduced number of defects.  相似文献

Polyethyleneimine (PEI) and Microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) have been used to buildup polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEM) on silicone oxide and silicone oxynitride surfaces at different pH values and with different electrolyte and polyelectrolyte/colloid concentrations of the components. Consecutive adsorption on these surfaces was studied by in situ dual-polarization interferometry (DPI) and quartz crystal microbalance measurements. The adsorption data obtained from both the techniques showed a steady buildup of multilayers. High pH and electrolyte concentration of the PEI solution was found to be beneficial for achieving a high adsorbed amount of PEI, and hence of MFC, during the buildup of the multilayer. On the other hand, an increase in the electrolyte concentration of the MFC dispersion was found to inhibit the adsorption of MFC onto PEI. The adsorbed amount of MFC was independent of the bulk MFC concentration in the investigated concentration range (15-250 mg/L). Atomic force microscopy measurements were used to image a MFC-treated silicone oxynitride chip from DPI measurements. The surface was found to be almost fully covered by randomly oriented microfibrils after the adsorption of only one bilayer of PEI/MFC. The surface roughness expressed as the rms-roughness over 1 microm2 was calculated to be 4.6 nm (1 bilayer). The adsorbed amount of PEI and MFC and the amount of water entrapped by the individual layers in the multilayer structures were estimated by combining results from the two analytical techniques using the de Feijter formula. These results indicate a total water content of ca. 41% in the PEM.  相似文献

The effects of charge density, pH, and salt concentration on polyelectrolyte adsorption onto the oxidized surface of silicon wafers were studied using stagnation point adsorption reflectometry and quartz crystal microgravimetry. Five different polyelectrolytescationic polyacrylamides of four charge densities and one cationic dextranwere examined. The adsorption kinetics was characterized using each technique, and the adsorption kinetics observed was in line with the impinging jet theory and the theory for one-dimensional diffusion, respectively. The polyelectrolyte adsorption increased with pH as an effect of the increased silica surface charge. A maximum in the saturation adsorption for both types of polyelectrolytes was found at 10 mM NaCl concentration. A significant adsorption also occurred at 1 M NaCl, which indicated a significant nonionic contribution to the adsorption mechanism. The fraction of solvent in the adsorbed layer was determined to be 70-80% by combining the two analysis techniques. This indicated a loose structure of the adsorbed layer and an extended conformation at the surface, favoring loops and tails. However, considering the solution structure with a hydrodynamic diameter larger than 100 nm for the CPAM and a thickness of the adsorbed layer on the order of 10 nm, the results showed that the adsorption is accompanied by a drastic change in polymer conformation. Furthermore, this conformation change takes place on a time scale far shorter than seconds.  相似文献

The interaction of aspartic acid with kaolinite was studied by potentiometric titrations and by adsorption measurements both at constant aspartate concentration (but varying pH) and at a constant pH of 5.5. The temperature was 25 degrees C, and the ionic medium 5 mM KNO3. Aspartic acid dissociation constants estimated from titrations agreed with those from the literature. The adsorption of aspartic acid to kaolinite was weak and varied only slightly with pH; 10-18% of 100 microM aspartic acid adsorbed to kaolinite at 100 m(2)L(-1) between pH 3 and 10. Data from the titrations and adsorption experiments were fitted closely by an extended constant-capacitance surface complexation model, in which monodentate outer-sphere complexes formed between deprotonated aspartic acid molecules and protonated sites on the variable-charge edges of the kaolinite crystals. There appeared to be no adsorption to the permanently charged crystal faces.  相似文献

Adsorption of cationic high molecular weight polyacrylamides (CPAM) (M(w) is about 800 kDa) with different fractions of cationic units tau = 0.09 and tau = 0.018 onto silica surface was studied over a wide range of pH (4-9) and KCl concentration (c(s) = 10(-3)-10(-1) M) by in-situ null ellipsometry. We discuss how the adsorbed layer depends on the bulk conditions as well as kinetically responds to changes in solution conditions. The adsorbed amount Gamma of CPAM increases with pH for all studied electrolyte concentrations until a plateau Gamma is reached at pH > 6. At low pH we observed an increase in adsorbed amount with electrolyte concentration. At high pH there is no remarkable influence of added salt on the values of the adsorbed amount. The thickness of adsorbed polymer layers, obtained by ellipsometry, increases with electrolyte concentration and decreases with pH. At low c(s) and high pH the polyelectrolyte adsorbs in a flat conformation. An overcompensation of the surface charge (charge reversal) by the adsorbed polyelectrolyte is observed at high c(s) and low pH. To reveal the reversibility of the polyelectrolyte adsorption with respect to the adsorbed amount and layer thickness, parameters such as polyelectrolyte concentration (c(p)), c(s), and pH were changed during the experiment. Generally, similar adsorbed layer properties were obtained independent of whether adsorption was obtained directly to initially bare surface or by changing pH, c(s), or the concentration of polyelectrolyte solution in the presence of a preadsorbed layer, provided that the coverage of the preadsorbed layer was low. Once a steady state of the measured parameters (Gamma, d) was reached, experimental conditions were restored to the original values and corresponding changes in Gamma and adsorbed layer thickness were recorded. For initially low surface coverage it was impossible to restore the layer properties, and in this case we always ended up with higher coverage than the initial values. For initial high surface coverage it was usually possible to restore the initial layer properties. Thus, we concluded that polyelectrolyte appears only partially reversible to changes in the solution conditions due the slow rearrangement process within the adsorbed layer.  相似文献

Adsorption of a well-characterized cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) onto the surface of a model colloid (monodisperse polystyrene latex with carboxylic functional groups) was studied over a wide range of pH (4–9) and KCl concentration (c s =10-3–0.3 M). The surface charge density of the latex particles with and without adsorbed CPAM was also measured over the same range of electrolyte compositions. The adsorbed amount of CPAM increases with increase in c s and pH. The polyelectrolyte adsorption alters substantially the surface charge density of the latex particles as compared to the polymer-free case. A large overcompensation of the surface charge by the adsorbed polyelectrolyte is established at high c s and low pH. A qualitative explanation of the observed features is put forward. The assembly and direct imaging of ferromagnetic nanoparticles into one-dimensional mesostructures (1-D) are reported. Polymer-coated ferromagnetic colloids (19 nm, 24 nm) were assembled at a crosslinkable oil-water interface under both magnetic field induced and zero-field conditions and permanently fixed into 1-D mesoscopic polymer chains (1-9 mum) in a process referred to as Fossilized Liquid Assembly (FLA). In the FLA process, nanoparticle chains were fixed at the oil interface through photopolymerization, enabling direct visualization of organized mesostructures using atomic force microscopy. Using the FLA methodology, we systematically investigated different conditions and demonstrated that dispersed ferromagnetic colloids possess sufficient dipolar interactions to organize into mesoscopic assemblies. Application of an external magnetic field during assembly enabled the formation of micron-sized chains which were aligned in the direction of the applied field. This universal methodology is an attractive alternative technique to cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) for the visualization of nanoparticle assembly in dispersed organic media.  相似文献

Tri- and nonaferrocenyl thiol dendrons have been synthesized and used to assemble dendronized gold nanoparticles either by the ligand-substitution method from dodecanethiolate-gold nanoparticles (AB(3) units) or Brust-type direct synthesis from a 1:1 mixture of dodecanethiol and dendronized thiol (AB(9) units). The dendronized colloids are a new type of dendrimers with a gold colloidal core. Two colloids containing a nonasilylferrocenyl dendron have been made; they bear respectively 180 and 360 ferrocenyl units at the periphery. These colloids selectively recognize the anions H(2)PO(4)(-) and adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP(2)(-)) with a positive dendritic effect and can be used to titrate these anions because of the shift of the CV wave even in the presence of other anions such as Cl(-) and HSO(4)(-). Recognition is monitored by the appearance of a new wave at a less positive potential in cyclic voltammetry (CV). The anion HSO(4)(-) is also recognized and titrated by the dendronized colloid containing the tris-amidoferrocenyl units, because of the progressive shift of the CV wave until the equivalence point. These dendronized colloids can form robust modified electrodes by dipping the naked Pt electrode into a CH(2)Cl(2) solution containing the colloids. The robustness is all the better as the dendron is larger. These modified electrodes can recognize H(2)PO(4)(-), ATP(2)(-) and HSO(4)(-), be washed with minimal loss of adsorbed colloid, and be reused.  相似文献
