The low‐lying electronic excited states of [Re(imidazole)(CO)3(phen)]+ (phen = 1,10‐phenanthroline) ranging between 420 nm and 330 nm have been calculated by means of relativistic spin‐orbit time‐dependent density functional theory (TD‐DFT) and wavefunction approaches (state‐average‐CASSCF/CASPT2). A direct comparison between the theoretical absorption spectra obtained with different methods including SOC and solvent corrections for water points to the difficulties at describing on the same footing the bands generated by metal‐to‐ligand charge transfer (MLCT), intraligand (IL) transition, and ligand‐to‐Ligand‐ charge transfer (LLCT). While TD‐DFT and three‐roots‐state‐average CASSCF (10,10) reproduce rather well the lowest broad MLCT band observed in the experimental spectrum between 420 nm and 330 nm, more flexible wavefunctions enlarged either by the number of roots or by the number of active orbitals and electrons destabilize the MLCT states by introducing IL and LLCT character in the lowest part of the absorption spectrum.

The electronic structures and spectral properties of three Re(I) complexes [Re(CO)3XL] (X = Br, Cl; L = 1-(4-5'-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazolylbenzyl)-2-pyridinylbenzoimidazole (1), 1-(4-carbazolylbutyl)-2-pyridinylbenzoimidazole (2), and 2-(1-ethylbenzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine (3)) were investigated theoretically. The ground and the lowest lying triplet excited states were fully optimized at the B3LYP/LANL2DZ and CIS/LANL2DZ levels, respectively. TDDFT/PCM calculations have been employed to predict the absorption and emission spectra starting from the ground and excited state geometries, respectively. The lowest lying absorptions were calculated to be at 481, 493, and 486 nm for 1-3, respectively, and all have the transition configuration of HOMO-->LUMO. The lowest lying transitions can be assigned as metal/ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT/LLCT) character for 1, ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LLCT) character for 2, and mixed MLCT/LLCT and intraligand pi-->pi* charge transfer (ILCT) character for 3. The emission of 1 at 551 nm has the MLCT/(3)LLCT character, 2 has the (3)MLCT/(3)LLCT character at 675 nm, and the 651 nm transition of 3 has the character of (3)MLCT/(3)LLCT/(3)ILCT. Ionization potentials (IP) and electron affinities (EA) calculations show that the comparable EA and smaller IP values and the relatively balanceable charges transfer ability of 2 with respect to 1 and 3 result in the higher efficiency of OLEDs. The calculated results show that the absorption and emission transition character and device's efficiency can be changed by altering the ancillary ligands.

The electronic structures and spectroscopic properties of the three tridentate cyclometalated Pt(II) complexes Pt(N/\N/\C)C(triple bond)CPh (N/\N/\CH = 6-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine) (1), Pt(N/\N/\S)C(triple bond)CPh (N/\N/\SH = 6-thienyl-2,2'-bipyridine) (2), and Pt(N/\N/\O)C(triple bond)CPh (N/\N/\OH = 6-furyl-2,2'-bipyridine) (3) were investigated theoretically using the density functional theory (DFT) method. The geometric structures of the complexes in the ground and excited states were explored at the B3LYP and UB3LYP levels, respectively. The absorption and emission spectra of the complexes in CH2Cl2 and CH3CN solutions were calculated by time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) with the PCM solvent model. The calculated energies of the lowest singlet state and lowest triplet state in the three complexes are in good agreement with the results of experimental absorption and luminescence studies. All of the lowest-lying transitions were categorized as LLCT combined with MLCT transitions. The 623-nm emission of 1 from the 3A' --> 1A' transition was assigned as 3LLCT and 3MLCT transitions, whereas the 657- and 681-nm emissions of 2 and 3, respectively, were attributed to 3ILCT perturbed by 3MLCT transitions. NLO response calculations revealed that the nonzero values of the static first hyperpolarizability (beta0) for 1-3 are greatly enhanced through the introduction of the metal Pt(II) into the cyclometalated ligands, an effect that is determined by MLCT and LLCT transitions.

The near-UV-vis electronic spectroscopy of [Ru(X)(Me)(CO)(2)(iPr-DAB)] (X = Cl or I; iPr-DAB = N,N'-di-isopropyl-1,4-diaza-1,3-butadiene) is investigated through CASSCF/CASPT2 and TD-DFT calculations on the model complexes [Ru(X)(Me)(CO)(2)(Me-DAB)] (X = Cl or I). Convergence of the calculated transition energies for the low-lying metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT), X-to-ligand charge-transfer (XLCT, X halide ligand), or sigma-bond-to-ligand charge-transfer (SBLCT) to experimental values is analyzed for both methods. On the basis of these accurate calculations, it is shown that whereas the lowest singlet state can be assigned to a nearly pure XLCT state in [Ru(I)(Me)(CO)(2)(Me-DAB)], its character is mainly MLCT in [Ru(Cl)(Me)(CO)(2)(Me-DAB)]. These results are in agreement with time-resolved emission/IR and resonance Raman experimental data. The experimental UV-vis bands are well reproduced by the CASSCF/CASPT2 calculations. The TD-DFT transition energies to the long-range charge transfer states are dramatically affected by the nature of the functional, with lowering leading to meaningless values in the case of nonhybrid functionals. Both methods reproduce well the red shift of the absorption bands on going from the chloride to the iodide complex as well as the shift of the strongly absorbing higher MLCT transition from the visible to the UV domain of energy.

The series of novel mixed-ligand iridium(III) complexes Ir(Mebib)(ppy)X (Mebib = bis(N-methylbenzimidazolyl)benzene and ppy = phenylpyridine; X = Cl, 1; X = -C[triple band]CH, 2; X = CN, 3) have been investigated theoretically to explore their electronic structures and spectroscopic properties. The ground and excited state geometries have been fully optimized at the B3LYP/LANL2DZ and CIS/LANL2DZ levels, respectively. The optimized geometry structural parameters agree well with the corresponding experimental results. The HOMO of 1 and 3 are mainly localized on the Ir atom, Mebib, and ppy ligand, but that of 2 has significant X ligand composition. Absorptions and phosphorescences in CH2 Cl2 media have been calculated using the TD-DFT level of theory with the PCM model based on the optimized ground and excited state geometries, respectively. The lowest lying absorptions of 1 and 3 at 444 and 416 nm are attributed to a {[d(yz)(Ir) + pi(Mebib) + pi(ppy)] --> [pi*(Mebib)]} transition with metal-to-ligand, ligand-to-ligand, and intra-ligand charge transfer (MLCT/LLCT/ILCT) character, whereas that of 2 at 458 nm is related to a {[d(yz)(Ir) + pi(Mebib) + pi(ppy) + pi(C[triple band]CH)] --> [pi*(Mebib)]} transition with MLCT/LLCT/ILCT and X ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (XLCT) transition character. The phosphorescence of 1 and 3 at 565 and 543 nm originates from the 3{[dy(yz)(Ir) + pi(Mebib) + pi(ppy)] [pi*(Mebib)]} excited state, while that of 2 at 576 nm originates from the 3{[d(yz)(Ir) + pi(Mebib) + pi(ppy) + pi(C[triple band]CH)] [pi*(Mebib)]} excited state. The calculation results show that the absorption and emission transition character can be changed by altering the pi electron-withdrawing ability of the X ligand and the phosphorescent color can be tuned by adjusting the X ligand.

UV-vis absorption and picosecond time-resolved IR (TRIR) spectra of amido and phosphido complexes fac-[Re(ER2)(CO)3(bpy)] (ER2 = NHPh, NTol2, PPh2, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, Tol = 4-methylphenyl) were investigated in conjunction with DFT and TD-DFT calculations in order to understand their ground-state electronic structure, low-lying electronic transitions and excited-state character and dynamics. The HOMO is localized at the amido/phosphido ligand. Amide and phosphide ligands are sigma-bonded to Re, the pi interaction being negligible. Absorption spectra show a weak band at low energies (1.7-2.1 eV) that arises from essentially pure ER(2) --> bpy ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LLCT). The lowest excited state is the corresponding triplet, (3)LLCT. Low triplet energies and large distortions diminish the excited-state lifetimes to 85 and 270 ps for NHPh and NTol(2), respectively, and to ca. 30 ps for PPh2. nu(CO) vibrations undergo only very small ( bpy MLCT character, is a unique feature of the amido/phoshido complexes, whose lowest excited state can be viewed as containing a highly unusual aminyl/phosphinyl radical-cationic ligand. For comparison, the amino and phosphino complexes fac-[Re(NHPh(2))(CO)3(bpy)]+ and fac-[Re(PPh3)(CO)3(bpy)]+ are shown to have the usual Re --> bpy (3)MLCT lowest excited states, characterized by upshifted nu(CO) bands.

Ultrafast photochemistry of the complexes trans(X,X)-[Ru(X)(2)(CO)(2)(bpy)] (X = Cl, Br, I) was studied in order to understand excited-state reactivity of equatorial CO ligands, coordinated trans to the 2,2'-bipyridine ligand (bpy). TD-DFT calculations have identified the lowest electronic transitions and singlet excited states as mixed X -->bpy/Ru --> bpy ligand to ligand/metal to ligand charge transfer (LLCT/MLCT). Picosecond time-resolved IR spectroscopy in the region of nu(CO) vibrations has revealed that, for X = Cl and Br, subpicosecond CO dissociation is accompanied by bending of the X-Ru-X moiety, producing a pentacoordinated intermediate trans(X,X)-[Ru(X)(2)(CO)(bpy)]. Final movement of an axial halide ligand to the vacant equatorial position and solvent (CH(3)CN) coordination follows with a time constant of 13-15 ps, forming the photoproduct cis(X,X)-[Ru(X)(2)(CO)(CH(3)CN)(bpy)]. For X = I, the optically populated (1)LLCT/MLCT excited state undergoes a simultaneous subpicosecond CO dissociation and relaxation to a triplet IRuI-localized excited state which involves population of an orbital that is sigma-antibonding with respect to the axial I-Ru-I bonds. Vibrationally relaxed photoproduct cis(I,I)-[Ru(I)(2)(CO)(CH(3)CN)(bpy)] is formed with a time constant of ca. 55 ps. The triplet excited state is unreactive, decaying to the ground state with a 155 ps lifetime. The experimentally observed photochemical intermediates and excited states were assigned by comparing calculated (DFT) and experimental IR spectra. The different behavior of the chloro and bromo complexes from that of the iodo complex is caused by different characters of the lowest triplet excited states.

The character and dynamics of the low-lying excited states of [Ru(X)(X')(CO)2(iPr-dab)] (X=X'=Cl or I; X=Me, X'=I; X=SnPh3, X'=Cl; iPr-dab=N, N'-diisopropyl-1,4-diazabutadiene) were studied experimentally by pico- and nanosecond time-resolved IR spectroscopy (TRIR) and (for X=X'=Cl or I) computationally using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) techniques. The lowest allowed electronic transition occurs between 390 and 460 nm and involves charge transfer from the Ru(halide)(CO) 2 unit to iPr-dab, denoted (1)MLCT/XLCT (metal-to-ligand/halide-to-ligand charge transfer). The lowest triplet state is well modeled by UKS-DFT-CPCM calculations, which quite accurately reproduce the excited-state IR spectrum in the nu(CO) region. It has a (3)MLCT/XLCT character with an intraligand (iPr-dab) (3)pipi* admixture. TRIR spectra of the lowest triplet excited state show two nu(CO) bands that are shifted to higher energies from their corresponding ground-state positions. The magnitude of this upward shift increases as a function of the ligands X and X' [(I)2 < (Sn)(Cl) < (Me)(I) < (Cl)2] and reveals increasing contribution of the Ru(CO)2-->dab MLCT character to the excited state. The lowest triplet state of [Ru(Cl)2(CO)2(iPr-dab)] undergoes a approximately 10 ps relaxation that is followed by CO dissociation, producing cis(CO,CH 3CN),trans(Cl,Cl)-[Ru(Cl)2(CH 3CN)(CO)(iPr-dab)] with a unity quantum yield and 7.2 ns lifetime and without any observable intermediate. To our knowledge, this is the first example of a "slow" CO dissociation from a thermally equilibrated triplet charge-transfer excited state.

We have synthesized ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes (1) Ru(II)(bpy)(2)(L(1)), (2) Ru(II)(bpy)(2)(L(2)) and (3) Ru(II)(bpy)(L(1))(L(2)), where bpy = 2,2'-bipyridyl, L(1) = 4-[2-(4'-methyl-2,2'-bipyridinyl-4-yl)vinyl]benzene-1,2-diol) and L(2) = 4-(N,N-dimethylamino-phenyl)-(2,2'-bipyridine) and investigated the intra-ligand charge transfer (ILCT) and ligand-ligand charge transfer (LLCT) states by optical absorption and emission studies. Our studies show that the presence of electron donating -NMe(2) functionality in L(2) and electron withdrawing catechol fragment in L(1) ligands of complex 3 introduces low energy LLCT excited states to aboriginal MLCT states. The superimposed LLCT and MLCT state produces redshift and broadening in the optical absorption spectra of complex 3 in comparison to complexes 1 and 2. The emission quantum yield of complex 3 is observed to be extremely low in comparison to that of complex 1 and 2 at room temperature. This is attributed to quenching of the (3)MLCT state by the low-emissive (3)LLCT state. The emission due to ligand localized CT state (ILCT and LLCT) of complexes 2 and 3 is revealed at 77 K in the form of a new luminescence band which appeared in the 670-760 nm region. The LLCT excited state of complex 3 is populated either via direct photoexcitation in the LLCT absorption band (350-700 nm) or through internal conversion from the photoexcited (3)MLCT (400-600 nm) states. The internal conversion rate is determined by quenching of the (3)MLCT state in a time resolved emission study. The internal conversion to LLCT and ILCT excited states are observed to be as fast as ~200 ps and ~700 ps for complexes 3 and 2, respectively. The present study illustrates the photophysical property of the ligand localized excited state of newly synthesized heteroleptic ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes.

The low-lying electronic transitions and photochemical reactions of a series of [((i)Pr-DAB)Pt(R)(2)] (where the co-ligand R = CH(3), CD(3), adme, neop, neoSi, C(triple bond)C(t)Bu, C(triple bond)CPh, Ph, Mes) compounds were studied using both experimental (electronic absorption and resonance Raman spectroscopy) and theoretical (density functional theory, DFT) techniques. The high-lying filled orbitals were revealed to have a significant co-ligand contribution in the case of alkyl complexes, while this contribution is predominant for the complexes with unsaturated co-ligands. Because the electronic transition removes electron density from the sigma(Pt-C) bond in the former complexes, it is best described as a metal-to-ligand charge transfer transition (MLCT) with partial sigma-bond-to-ligand charge transfer (SBLCT) character. Because the sigma(Pt-C) orbital is not involved in the HOMOs of the latter complexes, the low-lying transitions were characterized as mixed MLCT/L'LCT, where L'LCT stands for ligand-to-ligand charge transfer from the pi system of the unsaturated co-ligand to the pi((i)Pr-DAB) orbital. The alkyl complexes are photoreactive on visible light irradiation with Pt-C bond homolysis as the primary step. The efficiency of the photoreaction increases with increasing sigma donor strength of the alkyl ligand. The absolute quantum yield is quite low. The other complexes are virtually photostable, except when irradiated at relatively high energies.

The lowest energy metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) absorption bands found in ambient solutions of a series of [Ru(tpy)(bpy)X](m+) complexes (tpy = 2,2':3',2'-terpyridine; bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine; and X = a monodentate ancillary ligand) feature one or two partly resolved weak absorptions (bands I and/or II) on the low energy side of their absorption envelopes. Similar features are found for the related cyanide-bridged bi- and trimetallic complexes. However, the weak absorption band I of [(bpy)(2)Ru{CNRu(tpy)(bpy)}(2)](4+) is missing in its [(bpy)(2)Ru{NCRu(tpy)(bpy)}(2)](4+) linkage isomer demonstrating that this feature arises from a Ru(II)/tpy MLCT absorption. The energies of the MLCT band I components of the [Ru(tpy)(bpy)X](m+) complexes are proportional to the differences between the potentials for the first oxidation and the first reduction waves of the complexes. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) computational modeling indicates that these band I components correspond to the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) to lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) transition, with the HOMO being largely ruthenium-centered and the LUMO largely tpy-centered. The most intense contribution to a lowest energy MLCT absorption envelope (band III) of these complexes corresponds to the convolution of several orbitally different components, and its absorption maximum has an energy that is about 5000 cm(-1) higher than that of band I. The multimetallic complexes that contain Ru(II) centers linked by cyanide have mixed valence excited states in which more than 10% of electronic density is delocalized between the nearest neighbor ruthenium centers, and the corresponding stabilization energy contributions in the excited states are indistinguishable from those of the corresponding ground states. Single crystal X-ray structures and computational modeling indicate that the Ru-(C≡N)-Ru linkage is quite flexible and that there is not an appreciable variation in electronic structure or energy among the conformational isomers.

The nature and dynamics of the lowest excited states of fac-[Re(I)(L)(CO)(3)(phen)](+) and fac-[Re(I)(L)(CO)(3)(5-NO(2)-phen)](+) [L = Cl(-), 4-ethyl-pyridine (4-Etpy), imidazole (imH); phen = 1,10-phenanthroline] have been investigated by picosecond visible and IR transient absorption spectroscopy in aqueous (L = imH), acetonitrile (L = 4-Etpy, imH), and MeOH (L = imH) solutions. The phen complexes have long-lived Re(I) --> phen (3)MLCT excited states, characterized by CO stretching frequencies that are upshifted relative to their ground-state values and by widely split IR bands due to the out-of-phase A'(2) and A"nu(CO) vibrations. The lowest excited states of the 5-NO(2)-phen complexes also have (3)MLCT character; the larger upward nu(CO) shifts accord with much more extensive charge transfer from the Re(I)(CO)(3) unit to 5-NO(2)-phen in these states. Transient visible absorption spectra indicate that the excited electron is delocalized over the 5-NO(2)-phen ligand, which acquires radical anionic character. Similarly, involvement of the -NO(2) group in the Franck-Condon MLCT transition is manifested by the presence of an enhanced nu(NO(2)) band in the preresonance Raman spectrum of [Re(I)(4-Etpy)(CO)(3)(5-NO(2)-phen)](+). The Re(I) --> 5-NO(2)-phen (3)MLCT excited states are very short-lived: 7.6, 170, and 43 ps for L = Cl(-), 4-Etpy, and imH, respectively, in CH(3)CN solutions. The (3)MLCT excited state of [Re(I)(imH)(CO)(3)(5-NO(2)-phen)](+) is even shorter-lived in MeOH (15 ps) and H(2)O (1.3 ps). In addition to (3)MLCT, excitation of [Re(I)(imH)(CO)(3)(5-NO(2)-phen)](+) populates a (3)LLCT (imH --> 5-NO(2)-phen) excited state. Most of the (3)LLCT population decays to the ground state (time constants of 19 (H(2)O), 50 (MeOH), and 72 ps (CH(3)CN)); in a small fraction, however, deprotonation of the imH.+ ligand occurs, producing a long-lived species, [Re(I)(im.)(CO)(3)(5-NO(2)-phen).-]+.  相似文献

The isocyanide ligand forms complexes with ruthenium(II) bis-bipyridine of the type [Ru(bpy)(2)(CNx)Cl](CF(3)SO(3)) (1), [Ru(bpy)(2)(CNx)(py)](PF(6))(2) (2), and [Ru(bpy)(2)(CNx)(2)](PF(6))(2) (3) (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, py = pyridine, and CNx = 2,6-dimethylphenylisocyanide). The redox potentials shift positively as the number of CNx ligands increases. The metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) bands of the complexes are located at higher energy than 450 nm and blue shift in proportion to the number of CNx ligands. The complexes are not emissive at room temperature but exhibit intense structured emission bands at 77 K with emission lifetimes as high as 25 micros. Geometry optimization of the complexes in the singlet ground and lowest-lying triplet states performed using density functional theory (DFT) provides information about the orbital heritage and correlates with X-ray and electrochemical results. The lowest-lying triplet-state energies correlate well with the 77 K emission energies for the three complexes. Singlet excited states calculated in ethanol using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) and the conductor-like polarizable continuum model (CPCM) provide information that correlates favorably with the experimental absorption spectra in ethanol.

Two new complexes fac-[Re(NCS)(CO)3(N,N)] (N,N = 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), di-iPr-N,N-1,4-diazabutadiene (iPr-DAB)) were synthesized and their molecular structures determined by X-ray diffraction. UV-vis absorption, resonance Raman, emission, and picosecond time-resolved IR spectra were measured experimentally and calculated with TD-DFT. A good agreement between experimental and calculated ground- and excited-state spectra is obtained, but only if the solvent (MeCN) is included into calculations and excited state structures are fully optimized at the TD-DFT level. The lowest excited states of the bpy and iPr-DAB complexes are assigned by TD-DFT as 3aA' by comparison of calculated and experimental IR spectra. Excited-state lifetimes of 23 ns and ca. 625 ps were determined for the bpy and DAB complex, respectively, in a fluid solution at room temperature. Biexponential emission decay (1.3, 2.7 micros) observed for [Re(NCS)(CO)3(bpy)] in a 77 K glass indicates the presence of two unequilibrated emissive states. Low-lying electronic transitions and excited states of both complexes have a mixed NCS --> N,N ligand-to-ligand and Re --> N,N metal-to-ligand charge-transfer character (LLCT/MLCT). It originates in mixing between Re d(pi) and NCS pi characters in high-lying occupied MOs. Experimentally, the LLCT/MLCT mixing in the lowest excited state is manifested by shifting the nu(CO) and nu(NC) IR bands to higher and lower wavenumbers, respectively, upon excitation. Resonant enhancement of both nu(CO) and nu(NC) Raman bands indicates that the same LLCT/MLCT character mixing occurs in the lowest allowed electronic transition.

This work reported an investigation on the excited state and electronic transfer excitation of cuprous (I) bis-phenanthrouline complex by density functional theory. The intramolecular charge transfer from central metal to ligand (MLCT) during the excitation was observed. The transfer direction and degree were discussed on the basis of analyzing the Mulliken charge. The structural distortion caused by the charge transfer in the excited state was confirmed. The excited state was found having the characters similar with Cu(II) complex both in electronic and geometrical properties. The large structural distortion found between ground state and excited state could lead to a decrease in the lifetime of excited state as well as a non-radiative decay. The excitation energies and oscillator strengths of cuprous (I) bis-phenanthrouline were derived using time-dependent density functional method. The values of excitation energies are good agreement with the results of the experimental measuring.

The synthesis, structural, and photophysical properties of a novel family of neutral fac-[Re(N(∧)N)(CO)(3)(L)] complexes, where N(∧)N is either 2,2'-bipyridine or 1,10-phenanthroline and L is a para functionalized 5-aryltetrazolate [namely, 5-phenyltetrazolate (Tph(-)), 4-(tetrazolate-5-yl)benzaldehyde (Tbdz(-)), 5-(4-acetylphenyl)tetrazolate (Tacy(-)), and methyl 4-(tetrazolate-5-yl)benzoate (Tmeb(-))] are reported. The complexes were prepared by direct addition of the corresponding tetrazolate anion to the acetonitrile solvated fac-[Re(N(∧)N)(CO)(3)](+) precursor. NMR data demonstrate that the coordination of the metal fragment is regiospecific at the N2 atom of the tetrazolate ring. These conclusions are also supported by X-ray structural determinations. Photophysical data were obtained in diluted and deaerated dichloromethane solutions displaying broad and structureless profiles with emission maxima ranging from 566 to 578 nm. The absorption profiles indicate the presence of higher energy intraligand (IL) π-π* transitions and lower energies ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LLCT) and metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT). As the last two transitions are mixed, they are better described as a metal-ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (MLLCT), a result that is also supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The complexes show excited state lifetime values ranging from 102 to 955 ns, with associated quantum yield between 0.012 and 0.099. Compared to the parent neutral chloro or bromo [Re(N(∧)N)(CO)(3)X], the complexes show a slightly improved performance because of the π accepting nature of the tetrazolato ligand. The metal-to-ligand backbonding is in fact depleting the Re center of electron density, thus widening the HOMO-LUMO gap and reducing the non-radiative decay mechanism in accordance with the energy gap law. Finally, the electron-withdrawing or donating nature of the substituent on the phenyltetrazolato ligand allows the fine-tuning of the photophysical properties.
