Ten years since Robert C. Mackenzie’s death. A tribute to the ICTA founder

Dr. Robert Cameron Mackenzie was an eminent scientist who gave a major contribution to the progress of science in the fields of thermal analysis and clay minerals. He was a leading figure in the East–West cooperation at times when these relations were politically very difficult. The authors give an outline of his achievements and some personal recollections of his activity.

In this article the research topics dealt with at Research Group for Applications of Nuclear Reactions to Chemical Analysis (GARNAC) are described. Particular emphasis is laid on the main contribution of the GARNAC to the development and the evolution of charged particle activation analysis, evolving with the analytical studies performed and with the scientific and technical progress realized in material and semiconductors science.      

Comparative analysis of different computer handling systems for gamma-spectrometric data developed at C.C.R. Ispra

Three different computer systems for gamma-spectrometric data-handling have been developed at the Joint Nuclear Research Center of Ispra. The systems are: (1) batchwise treatment of the data with a large computer, (2) time-shared teleprocessing by means of a centralised computer, (3) use of a small computer at the laboratory site. The paper describes both hardware and software of the three systems with emphasis on their practical use and on advantages and disadvantages in routine application. A partial analysis of the running costs of the systems is also presented.
