Hydrogen combustion has emerged as one promising option toward the achievement of carbon-neutral in aviation. In this study, the effects of hydrogen addition on laminar flame speeds, autoignition, and the coupling of autoignition and flame propagation for surrogate jet fuel n-dodecane are numerically investigated at representative engine conditions to elucidate the potential challenges for flame stabilization and the autoignition risks in combustor design. Results show that the normalized flame speed increases almost linearly with hydrogen addition for fuel-lean conditions, while for fuel-rich conditions it increases nonlinearly and can be up to 20. This poses great challenges for avoiding flameholding and flashback, particularly for fuel-rich mixtures. Results further show that flame speed enhancement due to the increased flame temperature can be neglected under fuel-lean conditions, but not for fuel-rich mixtures. For the dependence of ignition delay time on temperature, there exists a unique intersection between pure n-dodecane/air and H2/air mixtures. Near the intersection temperature, there exists subtle kinetic coupling of the two fuels, leading to different H2 roles, e.g., accelerator or inhibitor, for the autoignition process of n-dodecane/H2/air mixtures. With this intersection temperature, the diagram for autoignition risks is constructed, which demonstrates that H2 acts as an inhibitor under subsonic cruise conditions while either an inhibitor or an accelerator under supersonic cruise conditions depending on the combustor inlet temperature and the amount of hydrogen addition. With the potential coupling of autoignition and flame propagation, the 1-D autoignition-assisted flame calculations show that hydrogen addition can alleviate or even eliminate the two-stage ignition characteristics for pure n-dodecane/air flames. For n-dodecane blended with hydrogen, the autoignition-assisted flame propagation speed, as well as the global transition from flame propagation to autoignition, can still be described by an analytic scaling parameterized by the ignition Damkӧhler number.  相似文献

Intricacies associated with the estimation of laminar flame speed using the axisymmetric Bunsen flame technique were assessed, through parametric direct numerical simulations. The study involved methane-air mixtures at atmospheric pressure and temperature, and both the flame cone angle and flame surface area methods were utilized to estimate the laminar flame speeds based on conditions used in recent relevant experimental studies. The results provided insight into the details of the flame structure and allowed for the assessment of various non-idealities and the attendant uncertainties associated with the estimation of laminar flame speeds. Additionally, molecular transport effects were investigated by altering the fuel diffusivity, in order to evaluate its impact on the flame structure and propagation under the presence of negative stretch. The modification of fuel diffusivity was found to affect the burning rate as stretch varies. Under fuel rich conditions, decreasing the fuel diffusivity was found to have an opposite effect on the heat release and thus the burning rate, when compared to positively stretched flames that have been investigated recently in a similar manner. The reported results are expected to provide guidance in flame propagation experiments using the convenient Bunsen flame method at near-atmospheric or elevated pressures, as well as insight into the effects of negative stretch that has, compared to positive, attracted less attention in past studies.  相似文献

Large-Eddy Simulations with the Conditional Moment Closure sub-grid combustion model and detailed chemistry for kerosene were performed for the ignition process in an Rich-Quench-Lean aviation gas turbine combustor at high-altitude conditions. The simulations used realistic boundary conditions for the flow inlet and spray droplet size distributions and velocity. Due to the large droplets, the Central Recirculation Zone (CRZ) is filled with fuel, mostly in liquid form. The first phase of the ignition process is critical and the results show that the spark kernel must provide enough energy to evaporate the spray and pyrolyse the fuel for the flame to grow and establish in the corner of the combustor. The second phase is characterised by the flame burning the mixture in the scorner and propagating around the Inner Shear Layer. This phase is also critical, as the flame needs the prevaporised fuel and smaller droplets in the corner to sufficiently increase the temperature and be able to propagate inside the CRZ, filled with liquid fuel and cold air. If this propagation inside the CRZ is achieved, phase three is accomplished and the burner is fully ignited. The simulations demonstrate the particular importance of detailed chemistry and proper boundary conditions for flame ignition simulations in high-altitude relight conditions.  相似文献

Lean premixed flame stabilization at atmospheric conditions, in a linear array of five swirl injectors, was modeled using well-resolved large eddy simulation (LES) and chemical kinetics that were accurate both for ignition and flame speed. The effects of injector spacing were studied by selectively blocking injectors in the array to obtain five (F), two (T) and single (S) injector configurations. Each of these was simulated at well-anchored as well as near blow-off conditions. Experiments indicated a blow-off trend that was non-monotonic with spacing: the two-injector configuration exhibited the greatest resistance to blow-off, followed by the single-injector setup. The five-injector configuration proved to be the least resistant (by far) in comparison. In an earlier computational study [1], preferential blow-off in configuration F was successfully modeled and strong flame-flame interference could be investigated. This work is continued to assess the ability of a numerical model to study flames near blow-off, but with varying levels of flame-flame interaction. Passive scalar tracking was used to relate cross-injector transport of material to a given injector’s flame-holding ability. The non-monotonic blow-off trend could not be explained by stretch and heat release rate trends, but well-stirred reactor (WSR) theory was found to be more relevant as trends in recirculation zone residence times correlate well with blow-off sequences. In addition, cross-injector transport was studied due to the multi-injector scenario to assess how flameholding zones may be diluted. This work is expected to be useful for analyzing part-load behavior in multi-injector power-generating gas turbine combustion systems, and helps to characterize injector performance towards extending the range of lean operability.  相似文献

Combustion of kerosene fuel spray has been numerically simulated in a laboratory scale combustor geometry to predict soot and the effects of thermal radiation at different swirl levels of primary air flow. The two-phase motion in the combustor is simulated using an Eulerian–Lagragian formulation considering the stochastic separated flow model. The Favre-averaged governing equations are solved for the gas phase with the turbulent quantities simulated by realisable k–? model. The injection of the fuel is considered through a pressure swirl atomiser and the combustion is simulated by a laminar flamelet model with detailed kinetics of kerosene combustion. Soot formation in the flame is predicted using an empirical model with the model parameters adjusted for kerosene fuel. Contributions of gas phase and soot towards thermal radiation have been considered to predict the incident heat flux on the combustor wall and fuel injector. Swirl in the primary flow significantly influences the flow and flame structures in the combustor. The stronger recirculation at high swirl draws more air into the flame region, reduces the flame length and peak flame temperature and also brings the soot laden zone closer to the inlet plane. As a result, the radiative heat flux on the peripheral wall decreases at high swirl and also shifts closer to the inlet plane. However, increased swirl increases the combustor wall temperature due to radial spreading of the flame. The high incident radiative heat flux and the high surface temperature make the fuel injector a critical item in the combustor. The injector peak temperature increases with the increase in swirl flow mainly because the flame is located closer to the inlet plane. On the other hand, a more uniform temperature distribution in the exhaust gas can be attained at the combustor exit at high swirl condition.  相似文献

The influence of femtosecond laser-induced plasma (FLIP) on the stability of a premixed CH(4)/O(2)/N(2) flame is investigated at atmospheric pressure. The laser energy, laser repetition rate, the equivalence ratios, and the volume percentage of oxygen in O(2)/N(2) blends are varied. Our findings indicate that the flame blow-off velocity is a function of these parameters. It has been experimentally found that the flame blow-off velocity increases by a factor of two with FLIP than without FLIP. A high-repetition-rate and a great energy laser-induced plasma flameholding, as a non-intrusive optical flameholding, may be a feasible alternative for any combustor.  相似文献

Non-reacting and reacting experiments on the ignition by a plasma jet (PJ) torch were performed to understand the correlation between fuel injection location and combustion characteristics in unheated Mach 2 airflow. Fuel was injected through three sonic injectors in the recirculation region behind a backward-facing step: a parallel injector at 2 mm from the bottom wall and two normal injectors at 2 and 9 mm from the step wall. In order to mitigate the combustion pressure interaction with nozzle, an isolator was installed between the nozzle and combustor. The combustion performance of normal injection was little affected by the difference of fuel injection locations. Moreover, normally injected fuel was escaped not to be held in the recirculation region despite of low fuel injection rates. This led to lower combustion performance relative to the parallel injection which provided fuel not to leave the recirculation region. In this case, the role of the recirculation region was to fully hold fuel, and the PJ torch provided hot gases as a heat source and acted as a flame-holder to ignite fuel–air mixtures. In a low temperature inflow condition, combustible regions were constrained around the bottom wall where embedded with the PJ torch. When thermal choking occurred in the combustor, it induced shock train both in the combustor and isolator. Under this unstable condition, the combustion performance of the normal injection was lower than that of the parallel injection. This is because the normal injection led most fuel into low temperature incoming air-stream.  相似文献

Large-eddy simulation (LES) of a liquid-fueled lean-direct injection (LDI) combustor is carried out by resolving the entire inlet flow path through the swirl vanes and the combustor. A localized dynamic subgrid closure is combined with a subgrid mixing and combustion model so that no adjustable parameters are required for both non-reacting and reacting LES. Time-averaged velocity predictions compare well with the measured data. The unsteady flow features that play a major role in spray dispersion, fuel–air mixing and flame stabilization are identified from the simulation data. It is shown that the vortex breakdown bubble (VBB) is smaller with more intense reverse flow when there is heat release. The swirling shear layer plays a major role in spray dispersion and the VBB provides an efficient flameholding mechanism to stabilize the flame.  相似文献

Ignition of the second stage in a lab-scale sequential combustor is investigated experimentally. A fuel mixing section between jet-in-cross-flow injection and the second stage chamber allows the fuel and vitiated, hot cross-flow to partially mix upstream of the main heat release zone. The focus of the present work is on the transient ignition process leading to a stable flame in the second stage. High-speed OH-PLIF as well as OH chemiluminescence imaging is applied to obtain complementary planar and line-of-sight integrated information on the ignition. We find experimental evidence for the co-existence of two regimes dominating the chamber ignition, i.e. autoignition and flame propagation. As the mass flow of the dilution air injected downstream of the first stage is increased (i.e. mixing temperatures in the fuel mixing section are decreased), we transition from an autoignition to a flame propagation dominated regime. Hysteresis in the ignition behavior is observed indicating that the first stage in a sequential combustor may be operated at leaner conditions than required for ignition of the second stage. The time traces of integral heat release obtained simultaneously with a photomultiplier tube show distinct features depending on the dominating regime, which is important for high-pressure testing with limited optical access.  相似文献

The effect of velocity gradient on the propagation speed of tribrachial flame edge has been investigated experimentally in laminar coflow jets for propane fuel. It was observed that the propagation speed of tribrachial flame showed appreciable deviations at various jet velocities in high mixture fraction gradient regime. From the similarity solutions, it was demonstrated that the velocity gradient varied significantly during the flame propagation. To examine the effect of velocity gradient, detail structures of tribrachial flames were investigated from OH LIF images and Abel transformed images of flame luminosity. It was revealed that the tribrachial point was located on the slanted surface of the premixed wing, and this slanted angle was correlated with the velocity gradient along the stoichiometric contour. The temperature field was visualized qualitatively by the Rayleigh scattering image. The propagation speed of tribrachial flame was corrected by considering the direction of flame propagation with the slanted angle and effective heat conduction to upstream. The corrected propagation speed of tribrachial flame was correlated well. Thus, the mixture fraction gradient together with the velocity gradient affected the propagation speed.  相似文献

Self-excited combustion instabilities in a mesoscale multinozzle array, also referred to as a micromixer-type injector, have been experimentally investigated in a lean-premixed tunable combustor operating with preheated methane and air. The injector assembly consists of sixty identical swirl injectors of 6.5 mm inner diameter, which are evenly distributed across the combustor dump plane. Their flow paths are divided into two groups – inner and outer stages – to form radially stratified reactant stoichiometry for the control of self-excited instabilities. OH PLIF measurements of stable flames reveal that the presence of radial staging has a remarkable influence on stabilization mechanisms, reactant jet penetration/merging, and interactions between adjacent flame fronts. In an inner enrichment case, two outer (leaner) streams merge into a single jet structure, whereas the inner (richer) reactant jets penetrate far downstream without noticeable interactions between neighboring flames. The constructed stability map in the 〈?i, ?o〉 domain indicates that strong self-excited instabilities occur under even split and outer enrichment conditions at relatively high global equivalence ratios. This is attributed to large-scale flame surface deformation in the streamwise direction, as manifested by vigorous detachment/attachment movements. The use of the inner fuel staging method was found, however, to limit the growth of large-amplitude heat release rate fluctuations, because the center flames are securely anchored during the whole period of oscillation, giving rise to a moderate lateral motion. We demonstrate that the collective motion of sixty flames – rather than the individual local flame dynamics – play a central role in the development of limit cycle oscillations. This suggests that the distribution pattern of the injector array, in combination with the radial fuel staging scheme, is the key to the control of the instabilities.  相似文献

This paper describes an experimental investigation of the feasibility of using “slow” active control approaches, which “instantaneously” change liquid fuel spray properties, to suppress combustion instabilities. The objective of this control approach was to break up the feedback between the combustion process heat release and combustor pressure oscillations that drive the instability by changing the characteristics of the combustion process (e.g., the characteristic combustion time). To demonstrate the feasibility of such control, this study used a proprietary fuel injector (NanomiserTM), which can vary its fuel spray properties, to investigate the dependence of acoustics–combustion process coupling, i.e., the driving of combustion instabilities, upon the fuel spray properties. This study showed that by changing the spray characteristics it is possible to significantly damp combustion instabilities. Furthermore, using combustion zone chemiluminescence distributions, which were obtained by Abel’s deconvolution synchronized with measured acoustic data, it has been shown that the instabilities were mostly driven midway between the combustor centerline and wall, a short distance downstream from the flame holder, where the mean axial flow velocity is approximately zero in the vortex near the flame holder. The results of this study strongly suggest that a “slow” active control system that employs controllable fuel injectors could be effectively used to prevent the onset of detrimental combustion instabilities.  相似文献

实验研究了内径分别为1 mm、2 mm和3 mm,水平通道长度为200 mm的Y形微燃烧器内氢气/空气扩散燃烧的火焰传播特性。首先,d=2 mm的燃烧器内的火焰传播模式最为丰富。其次,当燃烧器管径较大时,火焰更容易因扰动而发出噪音。在d=2和3 mm的燃烧器内能观察到两个阶段的噪音,而当d=1 mm时只有一个阶段的噪音。d=2 mm的燃烧器内平均火焰传播速度最小。而且,随着管径的增大,边界火焰更长。值得注意的是,在d=1 mm的燃烧器内,实验观察到了移动的"火焰街"。最后,基于系统的实验观察绘制了八种火焰传播模式的分布图。总之,本文不仅揭示了火焰传播特性与运行参数和尺度效应之间的关系,而且能为Y形微燃烧器的设计和运行提供指导。  相似文献

Single-element combustor experiments are conducted for three shear coaxial geometry configuration injectors by using gaseous oxygen and gaseous hydrogen(GO2/GH2) as propellants. During the combustion process, several spatially and time- resolved non-intrusive optical techniques, such as OH planar laser induced fluorescence(PLIF), high speed imaging, and infrared imaging, are simultaneously employed to observe the OH radical concentration distribution, flame fluctuations, and temperature fields. The results demonstrate that the turbulent flow phenomenon of non-premixed flame exhibits a remarkable periodicity, and the mixing ratio becomes a crucial factor to influence the combustion flame length. The high speed and infrared images have a consistent temperature field trend. As for the OH-PLIF images, an intuitionistic local flame structure is revealed by single-shot instantaneous images. Furthermore, the means and standard deviations of OH radical intensity are acquired to provide statistical information regarding the flame, which may be helpful for validation of numerical simulations in future. Parameters of structure configurations, such as impinging angle and oxygen post thickness, play an important role in the reaction zone distribution. Based on a successful flame contour extraction method assembled with non-linear anisotropic diffusive filtering and variational level-set, it is possible to implement a fractal analysis to describe the fractal characteristics of the non-premixed flame contour. As a result, the flame front cannot be regarded as a fractal object. However, this turbulent process presents a self-similarity characteristic.  相似文献

Recent studies have demonstrated stable generation of power from pure ammonia combustion in a micro gas turbine (MGT) with a high combustion efficiency, thus overcoming some of the challenges that discouraged such applications of ammonia in the past. However, achievement of low NOx emission from ammonia combustors remains an important challenge. In this study, combustion techniques and combustor design for efficient combustion and low NOx emission from an ammonia MGT swirl combustor are proposed. The effects of fuel injection angle, combustor inlet temperature, equivalence ratio, and ambient pressure on flame stabilization and emissions were investigated in a laboratory high pressure combustion chamber. An FTIR gas analyser was employed in analysing the exhaust gases. Numerical modeling using OpenFOAM was done to better understand the dependence of NO emissions on the equivalence ratio. The result show that inclined fuel injection as opposed to vertical injection along the combustor central axis resulted to improved flame stability, and lower NH3 and NOx emissions. Numerical and experimental results showed that a control of the equivalence ratio upstream of the combustor is critical for low NOx emission in a rich-lean ammonia combustor. NO emission had a minimum value at an upstream equivalence ratio of 1.10 in the experiments. Furthermore, NO emission was found to decrease with ambient pressure, especially for premixed combustion. For the rich-lean combustion strategy employed in this study, lower NOx emission was recorded in premixed combustion than in non-premixed combustion indicating the importance of mixture uniformity for low NOx emission from ammonia combustion. A prototype liner developed to enhance the control and uniformity of the equivalence ratio upstream of the combustor further improved ammonia combustion. With the proposed liner design, NOx emission of 42?ppmv and ammonia combustion efficiency of 99.5% were achieved at 0.3?MPa for fuel input power of 31.44?kW.  相似文献

对Solar低排放预混燃烧系统的燃烧稳定性进行了数值研究.应用非定常N-S方程、雷诺应力紊流模型及涡团耗散燃烧模型,数值模拟了该类型燃烧器在不同的燃料空气供给条件下的气流流动特性和压力振荡特性,并给出了不稳定发生时压力和速度振荡的幅值和频率.根据供给条件的不同,燃烧可以是稳定的或是不稳定的,取决于燃料到火焰前沿的迟滞时间.采用CFD方法,可精确地获得燃料到火焰前沿的迟滞时间,证实了所采用的模型能够精确预测不稳定燃烧的出现及振荡特性.通过调整燃料与空气的供给条件,可使振荡激励或阻尼.  相似文献

Abstract  

As effective devices to extend the fuel residence time in supersonic flow and prolong the duration time for hypersonic vehicles cruising in the near-space with power, the backward-facing step and the cavity are widely employed in hypersonic airbreathing propulsive systems as flameholders. The two-dimensional coupled implicit RANS equations, the standard k-ε turbulence model, and the finite-rate/eddy-dissipation reaction model have been used to generate the flow field structures in the scramjet combustors with the backward-facing step and the cavity flameholders. The flameholding mechanism in the combustor has been investigated by comparing the flow field in the corner region of the backward-facing step with that around the cavity flameholder. The obtained results show that the numerical simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental data, and the different grid scales make only a slight difference to the numerical results. The vortices formed in the corner region of the backward-facing step, in the cavity and upstream of the fuel injector make a large difference to the enhancement of the mixing between the fuel and the free airstream, and they can prolong the residence time of the mixture and improve the combustion efficiency in the supersonic flow. The size of the recirculation zone in the scramjet combustor partially depends on the distance between the injection and the leading edge of the cavity. Further, the shock waves in the scramjet combustor with the cavity flameholder are much stronger than those that occur in the scramjet combustor with the backward-facing step, and this causes a large increase in the static pressure along the walls of the combustor.  相似文献

Micro direct-injection (DI) strategy is often used to extend the operation range of the reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) to high engine load, but its combustion process has not been well understood. In this study, the ignition and flame development of the micro-DI RCCI strategy were investigated on a light-duty optical engine using formaldehyde planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) and high-speed natural flame luminosity imaging techniques. The premixed fuel was iso-octane and an oxygenated fuel of polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODE) was employed for DI. The fuel-air equivalence ratio of DI was kept at 0.09 and the premixed equivalence ratio was varied from 0 to 1. RCCI strategies with early and late DI timing at –25° and –5° crank angle after top dead center were studied, respectively. Results indicate that the early micro-DI RCCI features a single-stage high-temperature heat release (HTHR). The combustion in the low-reactivity region shows a combination of flame front propagation and auto-ignition. The late micro-DI RCCI presents a two-stage HTHR. The second-stage HTHR is owing to the combustion in the low-reactivity region that is dominated by flame front propagation when the premixed equivalence ratio approaches 1. For both early and late micro-DI RCCI, the intermediate-temperature heat release (ITHR) of iso-octane, indicated by formaldehyde, takes place in the low-reactivity region before the arrival of the flame front. This is quite different from the flame front propagation in spark-ignition (SI) engine that shows no ITHR in the unburned region. The DI fuel mass is a key factor that affects the combustion in the low-reactivity region. If the DI fuel mass is quite low, there is more possibility of flame front propagation; otherwise, sequential auto-ignition dominates. The emergence of the flame front propagation in micro-DI RCCI strategy reduces its combustion rate and peak pressure rise rate.  相似文献

This systematic experimental study measures the effect of flame propagation along vertical edges on the overall downward spread of flames using Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA). Samples with a wide range of regular cross-sections – from triangular through octagonal – as well as irregular ones, have been used to test a large variation of internal angles. A MATLAB-based tool was used to calculate instantaneous spread rate for central and edge flames. The edge flame is shown to significantly enhance the spread rate, as much as five times, in respect to samples with no edges. This amplification is shown to depend primarily on the internal angle at the edge (the smaller the angle, the faster the flame) and fuel thickness, and not on other factors such as aspect ratio or cross-sectional area. Using a phenomenological argument, the edge propagation rate is correlated to the spread rate over an equivalent cylindrical fuel (the limiting shape with infinite edges) with an effective radius obtained from the geometry of the edges and the diffusion length scale of the solid phase. A formula for flame spread over cylindrical fuel from the literature is used to link the new results to existing models. Both thick and thin limits are shown to encompass the wide range of three-dimensional spread rate data within the effective radius (the independent variable), which can be determined from the known parameters. Based on these results, different types of cross-sectional areas can be sorted in the order of their inherent fire safety characteristics.  相似文献

To control combustion oscillations, the characteristics of an oscillating swirl injection premixed flame have been investigated, and control of oscillating combustion and noise based on local flame structure has been conducted. The r.m.s. value of pressure fluctuations and noise level show significantly large values between = 0.8 and 1.1. The beating of pressure fluctuations is observed for the large oscillating flame conditions in this combustor. Relationship between beating of pressure fluctuations and local flame structure was observed by the simultaneous measurement of CH/OH planar laser induced fluorescence and pressure fluctuations. The local flame structure and beating of pressure fluctuations are related and the most complicated flame is formed in the middle pressure fluctuating region of beating. The beating of pressure fluctuations, which plays important roles in noise generation and nitric oxide emission in this combustor, could be controlled by injecting secondary fuel into the recirculating region of oscillating flames. Injecting secondary fuel prevented lean blowout, and low NOx combustion was also achieved even for the case of pure methane injection as a secondary fuel. By injecting secondary fuel into the recirculating region near the swirl injector, the flame lifted from the swirl injector and its reaction region became uniform and widespread, hence resulting in low nitric oxide emission. Secondary mixture injection, fuel diluted with air, is not effective for control of combustion oscillations suppression and lean blowout prevention.  相似文献
