Ipomoea carnea Jacq. is an important folklore medicinal plant, assessed for its underexplored biological potential. Antioxidant, cytotoxic, antiproliferative and polyphenolic profile of whole plant was evaluated using various techniques. Maximum extract recovery (29% w/w), phenolic [13.54 ± 0.27 μg GAE/mg dry weight (DW)] and flavonoid (2.11 ± 0.10 μg QE /mg DW) content were recorded in methanol-distilled water (1:1) flower extract. HPLC-DAD analysis quantified substantial amount of six different polyphenols ranging from 0.081 to 37.95 μg/mg extract. Maximum total antioxidant and reducing potential were documented in methanol-distilled water and acetone-distilled water flower extracts (42.62 ± 0.47 and 24.38 ± 0.39 μg AAE/mg DW) respectively. Ethanol-chloroform root extract manifested highest free radical scavenging (IC50 of 61.22 μg/mL) while 94.64% of the extracts showed cytotoxicity against brine shrimps. Ethanol leaf extract exhibited remarkable activity against THP-1 cell line (IC50 = 8 ± 0.05 μg/mL) and protein kinases (31 mm phenotype bald zone).  相似文献

Arum dioscoridis, locally called ‘Gavur pancari’, is a wild plant the leaves of which have been used as vegetable and for preparing special soup which has a sour taste. This study was set up to determine in vitro antioxidant activities and total phenolic and flavonoid contents of different extracts of A. dioscoridis. Free radical scavenging activity was evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing activity with different concentrations of ethanol, methanol, acetone and water extracts of the plant leaves. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were widely variable depending on solvents. Ethanol and methanol extractions of the plant material showed better performances with respect to both phenolic and flavonoid contents, respectively. The highest phenolic and flavonoid contents of ethanol and methanol extracts were 100.890 mg/g GAE and 72.643 mg/g QE, respectively. The lower DPPH scavenging and ferric reducing activities were determined in comparison with previous reports and standard synthetic chemicals.  相似文献

Currant fruit extracts were characterized by (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity, 2,2-azinobis-3 ethyl benzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid cation decolorization activity, total reducing power, cupric ion reducing antioxidant power, and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays to evaluate their antioxidant activity. All five antioxidant assays revealed the highest antioxidant activity to be present for the black currants. The highest concentrations of phenolics were present in the black currants (1690?±?10?mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/100?g fresh weight), while the lowest value was obtained in the white currants (579?±?5?mg GAE/100?g fresh weight). The correlation between the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity assays was evaluated using regression analysis. A significant positive correlation was obtained between the total phenols and the cupric ion reducing antioxidant power (r?=?0.97, p?r?=?0.93, p?相似文献

The aim of this work was to determine phenolic acid and flavonoid contents, as well as antioxidant properties of propolis from different regions of Poland. Total phenolic content of propolis samples ranged from 150.05 to 197.14 mg/g GAE, while total flavonoid content was 35.64–62.04 mg/g QE. The dominant phenolic acid was p-coumaric acid, the content of which was from 37.54 to 116.95 mg/g. The samples also contained much ferulic acid. Among the flavonoids, chrysine and galangine were dominant, and for two samples, naringine was dominant. The propolis samples exhibited various antiradical activity measured towards DPPH (1.92–2.69 mM TE/g) and ABTS√+ (3.96–4.98 mM TE/g) and reducing power was determined by the ferric reducing antioxidant power method (6.23–9.19 mM Fe(II)/g). The significant linear correlations between total phenolic content and antiradical activity and between total phenolic content and reducing power were observed. Moreover, the total flavonoids content significantly correlated with antiradical activity and reducing power.  相似文献

The aerial parts of Epilobium plants are widely used as folk medicine and food around the world. The present study was aimed to investigate the antioxidant activities and active chemical constituents from Epilobium angustifolium L. The results revealed that the EtOAc extract, rich in phenolic compounds and flavonoids (16.81 ± 0.67 g GAE/100 g extract and 4.95 ± 0.21 g QE/100 g extract, respectively), possessed significantly antioxidant activities in reducing power, DPPH radical scavenging activity, ABTS radical scavenging activity and highly in inhibiting lipid peroxidation activity. Simultaneously, active fractions F to H from EtOAc extracts showing potent in vitro antioxidant activities also contained high content of total phenolic and flavonoid. Twenty-eight compounds were identified as phenolic compounds and flavonoids by LC-MS/MS. The results illustrate that the E. angustifolium L., which is rich in phenolics, could be used as a natural resource of antioxidant ingredient.  相似文献

In this study the antioxidant and cytotoxicity activity of the Adonidia merrillii fruits were investigated using different solvent polarities (methanol, ethyl acetate and water). The results showed that the total phenolic and flavonoid contents of the methanolic extract was higher compare with other extract with respective values of 17.80 ± 0.45 mg gallic acid equivalents/g dry weight (DW) and 5.43 ± 0.33 mg rutin equivalents/g DW. Beside that The RP-HPLC analyses indicated the presence of gallic acid, pyrogallol, caffeic acid, vanillic acid, syringic acid, naringin and rutin. In the DPPH, NO2 and ABTS scavenging assays, the methanolic extract exhibited higher antioxidant activity as compared to the ethyl acetate and water extracts. The extracts exhibited moderate to weak cytotoxic activity in the assays using human hepatocytes (Chang liver cells) and NIH/3T3 (fibroblasts cell) cell lines. The findings showed the Adonidia merrillii fruit extracts to possess considerable antioxidant and cytotoxicity properties. The fruit, therefore, is a potential candidate for further work to discover antioxidant and cytotoxic drugs from natural sources.  相似文献

Abstract

Trillium govanianum Wall. ex D. Don (Melanthiaceae alt. Trilliaceae), is native to the Himalayas. The present study, for the first time, was undertaken to explore the antimicrobial potential, to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of the methanol extract of the roots of Trillium govanianum and its solid phase extraction (SPE) fractions by using resazurin microtiter assay (REMA) against Gram positive and Gram negative bacterial registered strains and to carry out phytochemical analysis. The remarkable amount of gallic acid equivalent phenolic and quercetin equivalent flavonoid content was manifested by MeOH extract (20.27?±?3.03?mg GAE/g DW and 9.25?±?0.50?mg QE/g DW respectively). The GC/MS analysis revealed the presence saturated and unsaturated components. Considerable level of antibacterial potential against Gram-positive bacteria (MIC: 2.5-0.009?mg/mL) than against Gram-negative bacteria (MIC: 2.5-0.165?mg/mL) were observed. The use of microtiter plates has the advantage of lower cost, fast and quantitative results.  相似文献

Abstract

The present study investigates the phenolic composition, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of an ethyl acetate extract from C. triflorus L’Her. The phytochemical study on the aerial parts of C. triflorus belonging to the Fabaceae family led to the isolation and structural elucidation of 5-Hydroxy-7-O-glucosylflavone (P1), 5-Hydroxy-7-O-galactosylflavone (P2), 5,7-Dihydroxy-flavone (P3), 5,7,3’-Trihydroxy,4’-methoxy-flavone (P4). These compounds were identified by 1D and 2D NMR combined analysis as well as by UV.

Ethyl acetate extract of C. triflorus showed a significant and dose-dependent antioxidant activity in vitro, related to the presence of phenolics (180.33?±?12.22?µg GAE/mg) and flavonoids (16.78?± 1.54?µg QE/mg). The antimicrobial activity was evaluated in vitro against Staphylococcus aureus CECT 240 and Escherichia coli CECT 4099, by agar-diffusion method. The most active antibacterial activity was expressed by ethyl acetate extract of C. triflorus against Gram-positive bacteria S. aureus. The gathered results suggest that C. triflorus polyphenols and flavonoids are closely associated to its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.  相似文献

This study investigates the comprehensive organosulphur compounds and evaluation of antioxidant activities in Allium hookeri, called hooker chive. The non-volatile and volatile organosulphur compounds were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array detector (HPLC-PDA) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), respectively. Among 11 non-volatileorganosulphur compounds, methiin and cycloalliin were major compounds. A total of 42 volatile compounds were identified and allyl methyl sulphides and dimethyl sulphides were primarily volatiles. The total phenols ranged from 19.32 to 71.19 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g. The antioxidant capacities expressed IC50 values ranged from 9.59 to 38.54 mg/mL for DPPH radical scavenging activity and from 0.39 to 2.36 for ferric reducing antioxidant power assay. The results were proposed as useful tools for evaluating the nutraceutical of hooker chive.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the polyphenolic compounds and the antioxidant ability of Arbutus unedo fruits, collected from three regions of northern Morocco, using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to diode array and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry detection. The proper extraction method has been selected to achieve this objective. After delipidation, the three harvests were extracted by sonication using two solvents with increased polarity ethyl acetate and MeOH:water, 80:20 (v/v). Total polyphenols, flavonoids, tannins and anthocyanins were respectively: 108.41 ± 9.29 mg GAE/g (w/w) dry weight (DW), 101.07 ± 5.6 mg QE/g (w/w) (DW), 0.45 ± 0.48 mg EC/g (w/w) (DW) and 0.35 ± 0.48 mg Pg-3-glu/g (w/w) (DW). EC50 values for reducing power and DPPH radical scavenging activities were between 1.37 ± 0.2 and 17.82 ± 0.12 µg/mL (w/v). A total of 75 compounds were tentatively identified and some of these had never been found until nowadays in Arbutus unedo. The average amount of antioxidant compounds obtained by semi-quantitative analyses was 120.35 ± 32.05 mg/100 g (w/w) (DW). The attained results clearly highlight the potential of A. unedo as a source of healthy compounds, which could be advantageously added to the daily diet, making it a potential candidate for the cure for many emerging diseases.  相似文献

Effect of Acacia honey from north-west Nigeria on sodium arsenite-induced oxidative damage and clastogenicity in male Wistar rats was investigated. Animals were divided into four groups and were treated daily via oral gavage for one week before they were sacrificed. Brain, liver and blood serum were collected for antioxidant and protein assays. Clastogenicity, in vitro antioxidant activity, vitamins and minerals were also evaluated. From the results, co-administration of Acacia honey with sodium arsenite on the animals increased (P < 0.05) glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and catalase activities with concomitant decrease in malondialdehyde levels and anti-clastogenic effects relative to the group treated with sodium arsenite only. The honey possesses reducing power, high hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity, good amount of vitamins (A, C and E), flavonoids (5.08 ± 0.92 mg QE/100 g) and phenolics (5.40 ± 0.69 mg GAE/100 g). The minerals present include zinc, iron, sodium, magnesium, potassium and calcium. In conclusion, Acacia honey from Nigeria may mitigate oxidative stress and clastogenicity.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of supplementation of multiflower honey with bee products on the phenolic compound content and on antioxidant activity. Average total phenolic and flavonoids contents in the multiflower honeys were 36.06 ± 10.18 mg GAE/100 g and 4.48 ± 1.69 mg QE/100 g, respectively. The addition of royal jelly did not affect significantly the phenolic compound content and antioxidant activity. Supplementation of honey with other bee products, i.e. beebread, propolis, pollen, resulted in significant increase in the total phenolic and flavonoids contents, and in antiradical activity and reducing power, with the largest effect found for addition of beebread. Significant linear correlations between the total phenolic and flavonoids contents and antiradical activity and reducing power were found.  相似文献

IntroductionScientific evidence about biological profile of natural products can support their traditional uses. The current work was aimed to assess phytochemical and biological profile of nine medicinal plants collected from Herbalists.MethodsExtracts prepared in different solvents were subjected to phytochemical, antioxidant, enzyme inhibitory, cytotoxic, and antimicrobial activities. Reverse phase-high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) analysis was performed for the quantification of polyphenols.ResultsResults showed methanol extract (M) being potent as compared to others. Gentian lutea M showed maximum extract recovery (15.00 ± 0.11 % w/w) and TFC (30.82 ± 0.21 μg QE/mg extract). Nigella sativa M displayed highest TPC (44.99 ± 0.43 μg GAE/mg extract) and TAC (334.72 ± 0.35 μg AAE/ mg extract). Results showed noteworthy quantities of vanillic acid, rutin, kaempferol, emodin in ethyl acetate (EA) and methanol (M) extracts of plants assessed by RP-HPLC. Gentisic acid was highest (11.75 µg/mg extract) in T. arjuna M extract. Similarly, maximum %FRSA (82.28 ± 0.03 %) and TRP (160.40 ± 0.38 μg AAE/ mg extract) were depicted by Terminalia chebula and Chamomilla recutita, respectively. Moreover, Mentha longifolia and G. lutea M demonstrated noteworthy (p < 0.05) antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (14 ± 0.7 mm) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (12 ± 0.3 mm), respectively. Curcuma amada, C. recutita, Murraya koenigii and G. lutea M had significant α-glucosidase activity. Another good solvent for extraction was ethyl acetate (EA), whose extracts were secondary to methanol in producing significant biological profile. For example, EA of N. sativa (TPC: 1.46 ± 0.45 µg GAE/ mg extract), G. lutea (TRP: 160.33 ± 0.52 μg AAE/mg extract: ZOI of 12 ± 0.5 mm in K. pneumoniae) and Mormodica charantia (α-amylase inhibition: 39.5 ± 0.10 %) showed significant bioactivities. All extracts displayed mild antifungal protein kinase inhibition activities and were significantly (greater than80 %: p < 0.05) cytotoxic to brine shrimps with negligible hemolytic activity.ConclusionBriefly, variable polarity solvent extracts of studied plants will be processed for isolation of antioxidant, cytotoxic, carbohydrate enzyme inhibitory and antibacterial compounds.  相似文献

A study of the polyphenols content and antioxidant capacity of grapevine waste and hazelnut skins (roasted material) from post-harvest products that originate from Piedmont (Italy) has been carried out and the results herein presented. Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) were used to achieve process intensification in shorter extraction times, with lower environmental impact and higher selectivity compared to classic maceration. Besides classic solvents, the aqueous β-cyclodextrin solution (1.5%) showed to be an excellent extraction medium for grapevine waste. Total phenolic content (TP) from grapevine waste ranged from 18.23 ± 2.4 to 198 ± 3 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g dry weight, while total antioxidant capacity (TAC) expressed as EC50 ranged from 0.0902 ± 0.08 mg/mL to 0.0041 ± 0.02 mg/mL. For hazelnut skins, TP ranged from 61.68 ± 0.8 to 200.79 ± 3.0 mg GAE/g dry weight, while TAC ranged from 0.0021 ± 0.0004 to 0.0002 ± 0.0001 mg/mL extract. We have shown that, compared to maceration, the use of UAE and MAE methods can enhance polyphenols recovery and antioxidant capacity.  相似文献

In this study, bimetallic nanoparticles comprising silver and platinum with promising therapeutic activities were synthesized using ethanolic Vernonia mespilifolia plant extract for the first time. The bimetallic silver-platinum nanoparticles (AgPtNPs) were characterized using solid-state techniques including UV–vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) techniques. The internal morphological structure showed that the AgPtNPs were spherical with a diameter of approximately 35.5 ± 0.8 nm, while FTIR confirmed the effective capping and formation of the nanoparticles by phytoconstituents. The polyphenolic contents of the green synthesized nanoparticles from the ethanolic extract of V. mespilifolia (AgNPs and AgPtNPs) was found to be (28.0 ± 0.8 and 13.6 ± 0.1 mg GAE/g) total phenol, while the flavonoids content was (366.2 ± 17.0 and 126.6 ± 0.2 mg QE/g), and proanthocyanins content was (161.8 ± 0.6 and 70.2 ± 0.6 mg CE/g). The AgPtNPs displayed a greater ability to scavenge free radicals, especially DPPH and ABTS (IC50 19.5 and 21.6 µg/mL) respectively when compared with AgNPs and ascorbic acid. Besides, the AgPtNPs had a higher ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) (44.1 mg GAE/g) when compared to AgNPs (18.5 mg GAE/g). Moreover, the AgPtNPs showed a two-fold antimicrobial activity towards pathogenic microbes compared to AgNPs and a selective cytotoxic potency towards MCF-7 breast cancer cell line compared to HEK 293 normal cell line. In summary, these fascinating bioactivities displayed by the AgPtNPs highlighted their potential in therapeutic biomedical applications.  相似文献

Abstract

Species of Garcinia (Guttiferae) are used for flavoring curries, as a supplement, and to treat various diseases. This study describes the comparison and discrimination of Garcinia cambogia, Garcinia indica, Garcinia mangostana and Garcinia atroviridis fruits by analyzing their major phytochemicals, elemental content, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and anticholinesterase enzymes activities. For phytochemical and elemental profiling, ultraviolet (UV), near infrared/infrared (NIR/IR), inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and ICP-mass spectrometric (ICP-MS) techniques were used. The chemometric multivariate tests of linear discriminant and principal component analyses (LDA, PCA) were used to discriminate the subject fruit samples. Spectroscopic data showed resonances of phenolics and flavonoidal constituents present in the fruits. G. mangostana exhibited the highest phenolics (721.6 to 2815.3?µM GAE/g), whereas G. cambogia was rich in flavonoids (51.9 to 2709.2?µM QE/g). Anthocyanin (cyanidin-3-O-glucoside) evaluated by high performance liquid chromatographic was 9.01?mg/kg in G. mangostana fruit. In the analyzed fruits, Ca, K and Na were high, trace essential elements were at appreciable contents, whereas the toxic elements As, Cd, Tl, and Pb were within the safe limits. G. mangostana contained potent free radicals and cholinesterase enzyme inhibitors, whereas G. cambogia inhibited α-amylase enzyme more significantly. PCA and LDA discriminated the fruit samples with distinct classification and variability indices. The analyzed fruits were shown to be good sources of free radicals, cholinesterase, and α-amylase enzymes inhibition, mineral and essential elements, and safe for human consumption.  相似文献
