Let Rbe a commutative ring and A?M m×n . The spanning rank of Ais the smallest positive integer s for which A=PQ(m×s s×n) The spanning rank of the zero matrix is set equal to zero. If Ris a field, then the spanning rank of Ais just the classical rank of A. In the first section of this paper, various theorems and examples are given which indicate how much of the classical theory of rank is still valid for spanning rank over a commutative ring. If A= PQ(n×s s×n) is a spanning rank factorization of a square matrix and D= QP, then Dis called a spanning rank partner of A. In the second part of this paper, the null ideals N Aand N Dof Aand Drespectively are compared. For instance, we show N A=N Dif s= nand N A= XN Dif s<nwhenever Ris a PIDand A≠0. This result sometimes (e.g. s<<n) makes the computation of N Aeasy.  相似文献

We introduce the notion of generalized E-stable ranks for commutative unital Banach algebras and determine these ranks for the disk-algebra A(\mathbbD){A(\mathbb{D})}, many of its subalgebras, and the algebra H of bounded holomorphic functions in the unit disk. Relations to L-sets and separating algebras, notions due to Csordas and Reiter, are given, too. Finally we show that the absolute stable rank of A(\mathbbD){A(\mathbb{D})} and H is bigger than 2.  相似文献

Several new notions of stable ranks for commutative Banach algebras are introduced. Due to the fact that they depend on certain orthogonal groups, they are called real stable ranks and are finer than their complex counterparts.  相似文献

We perform an in-depth study of strongly stable ranks of modules over a commutative ring. Here we define the strongly stable rank of a module to be the supremum of the stable ranks of its finitely generated submodules. As an application, we give non-Noetherian generalizations of known facts about outer products and matrix completions over PIRs and Dedekind domains. We construct Noetherian and non-Noetherian domains of arbitrary strongly stable rank. We also consider strongly n-generated ideals, and we characterize the rings in which every ideal is strongly 2-generated and the domains in which every ideal is strongly 3-generated.  相似文献

The rank of a commutative cancellative semigroup S is the cardinality of a maximal independent subset of S. Commutative cancellative semigroups of finite rank are subarchimedean and thus admit a Tamura-like representation. We characterize these semigroups in several ways and provide structure theorems in terms of a construction akin to the one devised by T. Tamura for N-semigroups.  相似文献

We introduce the notion of generalized E-stable ranks for commutative unital Banach algebras and determine these ranks for the disk-algebra \({A(\mathbb{D})}\), many of its subalgebras, and the algebra H of bounded holomorphic functions in the unit disk. Relations to L-sets and separating algebras, notions due to Csordas and Reiter, are given, too. Finally we show that the absolute stable rank of \({A(\mathbb{D})}\) and H is bigger than 2.  相似文献

A square matrix A of order n is said to be tripotent if A 3?=?A. In this note, we give a nine-term disjoint idempotent decomposition for the linear combination of two commutative tripotent matrices and their products. Using the decomposition, we derive some closed-form formulae for the eigenvalues, determinant, rank, trace, power, inverse and group inverse of the linear combinations. In particular, we show that the linear combinations of two commutative tripotent elements and their products can produce 39?=?19,683 tripotent elements.  相似文献

In this paper, we give a class of C*-algebras with non-stable K 1-group property which include the example non-simple tracial topological rank zero and stable rank two C*-algebra given by Lin and Osaka.  相似文献

We study the concept of real stable rank for a complex commutative Banach algebra A (rsr A). It is shown that this invariant has a behaviour completely analogous to the classical Bass stable rank; in particular, we establish a precise relation between both invariants.Further, we use this machinery to show that the connected components of the orthogonal spaces of A, O k n (A)={ A k×n:t=idk×k}, stabilize when k and n increase in a way that depends on rsr A Finally, we prove an analogous stabilization result for the homotopy classes of maps from the j-sphere into O k n (A), where j is an arbitrary positive integer.Research supported by a grant of the CONICET, Argentina.  相似文献

Abstract A group G has finite Hirsch-Zaicev rank rhz(G) = r if G has an ascending series whose factors are either infinite cyclic or periodic and if the number of infinite cyclic factors is exactly r. The authors discuss groups with finite Hirsch-Zaicev rank and the connection between this and groups having finite section p-rank for some prime p, or p=0. Groups all of whose abelian subgroups are of bounded rank are also discussed. This paper concerns three notions of rank of matrices over semirings; real rank, semiring rank and column rank. These three rank functions are the same over subfields of reals but differ for matrices over subsemirings of nonnegative reals. We investigate the largest values of r for which the real rank and semiring rank, real rank and column rank of all m×n matrices over a given semiring are both r, respectively. We also characterize the linear operators which preserve the column rank of matrices over certain subsemirings of the nonnegative reals.  相似文献

Certain permutation groups on sets with distance relation are characterized as groups of projectivities PGL2(R) on the projective line over a commutative ring R of stable rank 2, thus generalizing a classical result of Tits where R is a field.

Let A be the incidence matrix of lines and points of the classical projective plane PG(2, q) with q odd. With respect to a conic in PG(2, q), the matrix A is partitioned into 9 submatrices. The rank of each of these submatrices over Fq, the defining field of PG(2, q), is determined. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Combin Designs 18: 224–236, 2010  相似文献

For a simple graph G?=?(𝒱, ?) with vertex-set 𝒱?=?{1,?…?,?n}, let 𝒮(G) be the set of all real symmetric n-by-n matrices whose graph is G. We present terminology linking established as well as new results related to the minimum rank problem, with spectral properties in graph theory. The minimum rank mr(G) of G is the smallest possible rank over all matrices in 𝒮(G). The rank spread r v (G) of G at a vertex v, defined as mr(G)???mr(G???v), can take values ??∈?{0,?1,?2}. In general, distinct vertices in a graph may assume any of the three values. For ??=?0 or 1, there exist graphs with uniform r v (G) (equal to the same integer at each vertex v). We show that only for ??=?0, will a single matrix A in 𝒮(G) determine when a graph has uniform rank spread. Moreover, a graph G, with vertices of rank spread zero or one only, is a λ-core graph for a λ-optimal matrix A in 𝒮(G). We also develop sufficient conditions for a vertex of rank spread zero or two and a necessary condition for a vertex of rank spread two.  相似文献

Let A?(??) denote the set of functions belonging to the disc algebra having real Fourier coefficients. We show that A?(??) has Bass and topological stable ranks equal to 2, which settles the conjecture made by Brett Wick in [18]. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for reducibility in some real algebras of functions on symmetric domains with holes, which is a generalization of the main theorem in [18]. A sufficient topological condition on the symmetric open set ?? is given for the corresponding real algebra A?(??) to have Bass stable rank equal to 1 (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Let E be an elliptic curve over a number field K which admits a cyclic p-isogeny with p?3 and semistable at primes above p. We determine the root number and the parity of the p-Selmer rank for E/K, in particular confirming the parity conjecture for such curves. We prove the analogous results for p=2 under the additional assumption that E is not supersingular at primes above 2.  相似文献
