An approximate analytical model for calculating the pull-in voltage of a stepped cantilever-type radio frequency(RF) micro electro-mechanical system(MEMS) switch is developed based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam and a modified couple stress theory, and is validated by comparison with the finite element results. The sensitivity functions of the pull-in voltage to the designed parameters are derived based on the proposed model. The sensitivity investigation shows that the pull-in voltage sensitivities increase/decrease nonlinearly with the increases in the designed parameters. For the stepped cantilever beam, there exists a nonzero optimal dimensionless length ratio, where the pull-in voltage is insensitive. The optimal value of the dimensionless length ratio only depends on the dimensionless width ratio, and can be obtained by solving a nonlinear equation. The determination of the designed parameters is discussed, and some recommendations are made for the RF MEMS switch optimization.

The size-dependent effect on the biaxial and shear nonlinear buckling analysis of an isotropic and orthotropic micro-plate based on the surface stress, the modified couple stress theory(MCST),and the nonlocal elasticity theories using the differential quadrature method(DQM)is presented.Main advantages of the MCST over the classical theory(CT)are the inclusion of the asymmetric couple stress tensor and the consideration of only one material length scale parameter.Based on the nonlinear von K′arm′an assumption, the governing equations of equilibrium for the micro-classical plate considering midplane displacements are derived based on the minimum principle of potential energy.Using the DQM,the biaxial and shear critical buckling loads of the micro-plate for various boundary conditions are obtained.Accuracy of the obtained results is validated by comparing the solutions with those reported in the literature.A parametric study is conducted to show the effects of the aspect ratio, the side-to-thickness ratio,Eringen’s nonlocal parameter, the material length scale parameter,Young’s modulus of the surface layer, the surface residual stress, the polymer matrix coefficients, and various boundary conditions on the dimensionless uniaxial, biaxial, and shear critical buckling loads. The results indicate that the critical buckling loads are strongly sensitive to Eringen’s nonlocal parameter, the material length scale parameter, and the surface residual stress effects, while the effect of Young’s modulus of the surface layer on the critical buckling load is negligible. Also, considering the size dependent effect causes the increase in the stiffness of the orthotropic micro-plate.The results show that the critical biaxial buckling load increases with an increase in G12/E2and vice versa for E1/E2.It is shown that the nonlinear biaxial buckling ratio decreases as the aspect ratio increases and vice versa for the buckling amplitude.Because of the most lightweight micro-composite materials with high strength/weight and stiffness/weight ratios,it is anticipated that the results of the present work are useful in experimental characterization of the mechanical properties of micro-composite plates in the aircraft industry and other engineering applications.

The linear and nonlinear torsional free vibration analyses of functionally graded micro/nano-tubes (FGMTs) are analytically investigated based on the couple stress theory. The employed non-classical continuum theory contains one material length scale parameter, which can capture the small scale effect. The FGMT model accounts for the through-radius power-law variation of a two-constituent material. Hamilton’s principle is used to develop the non-classical nonlinear governing equation. To study the effect of the boundary conditions, two types of end conditions, i.e., fixed-fixed and fixed-free, are considered. The derived boundary value governing equation is of the fourthorder, and is solved by the homotopy analysis method (HAM). This method is based on the Taylor series with an embedded parameter, and is capable of providing very good approximations by means of only a few terms, if the initial guess and the auxiliary linear operator are properly selected. The analytical expressions are developed for the linear and nonlinear natural frequencies, which can be conveniently used to investigate the effects of the dimensionless length scale parameter, the material gradient index, and the vibration amplitude on the natural frequencies of FGMTs.

This paper focuses on the buckling behaviors of a micro-scaled bi-directional functionally graded (FG) beam with a rectangular cross-section, which is now widely used in fabricating components of micro-nano-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS) with a wide range of aspect ratios. Based on the modified couple stress theory and the principle of minimum potential energy, the governing equations and boundary conditions for a micro-structure-dependent beam theory are derived. The present beam theory incorporates different kinds of higher-order shear assumptions as well as the two familiar beam theories, namely, the Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam theories. A numerical solution procedure, based on a generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM), is used to calculate the results of the bi-directional FG beams. The effects of the two exponential FG indexes, the higher-order shear deformations, the length scale parameter, the geometric dimensions, and the different boundary conditions on the critical buckling loads are studied in detail, by assuming that Young’s modulus obeys an exponential distribution function in both length and thickness directions. To reach the desired critical buckling load, the appropriate exponential FG indexes and geometric shape of micro-beams can be designed according to the proposed theory.

The three-dimensional linearized theory of elastic waves in initially stressed bodies under plane strain is used to study the influence of the initial stretching of a simply supported plate strip with two neighboring circular holes on the stress concentration around the holes caused by additional uniformly distributed dynamic (time-harmonic) normal forces acting on the upper face. The corresponding problem is formulated and solved by the finite-element method. Numerical results on the stress concentration around the holes and the influence of the initial stretching on this concentration are presented Published in Prikladnaya Mekhanika, Vol. 43, No. 10, pp. 135–140, October 2007.

A (0 0 1) surface of silicon consists of terraces of two variants, which have an identical atomic structure, except for a 90° rotation. We formulate a model to evolve the terraces under the combined action of electric current and applied strain. The electric current motivates adatoms to diffuse by a wind force, while the applied strain motivates adatoms to diffuse by changing the concentration of adatoms in equilibrium with each step. To promote one variant of terraces over the other, the wind force acts on the anisotropy in diffusivity, and the applied strain acts on the anisotropy in surface stress. Our model reproduces experimental observations of stationary states, in which the relative width of the two variants becomes independent of time. Our model also predicts a new instability, in which a small change in experimental variables (e.g., the applied strain and the electric current) may cause a large change in the relative width of the two variants.

Three-dimensional analysis of a half plane crack in a transversely isotropic solid is performed. The crack is subjected to a pair of normal point loads moving in a direction perpendicular to the crack edge on its faces. Transform methods are used to reduce the boundary value problem to a single integral equation that can be solved by the Wiener-Hopf technique. The Cagniard-de Hoop method is employed to invert the transforms. An exact expression is derived for the mode I stress intensity factor as a function of time and position along the crack edge. Some features of the solution are discussed through numerical results. The shock wave structure in a rarefied polyatomic gas is analyzed on the basis of non-linear extended thermodynamics with 6 independent fields (ET6); the mass density, the velocity, the temperature and the dynamic pressure, which permits us to study the shock profile also for large Mach numbers. The first result of this paper is that the shock wave structure is substantially the same as that obtained previously from the linear theory for small or moderately large Mach numbers. Only for very large Mach numbers there exist some differences in the relaxation part of the profile between the model with a non-linear production term and the one with a linear production term. The mathematical reason of this behavior is due to the fact that the non-linear differential system has the same principal part of the linear one.The classical Meixner theory of relaxation processes with one internal variable is fully compatible with the ET6 theory and this fact gives us the explicit expressions of the internal variable and the non-equilibrium temperature in the Meixner theory in terms of the 6 fields, especially, of the dynamic pressure. By using the correspondence relation, the shock wave structure described by the ET6 theory is converted into the variables described by the Meixner theory. It is shown that the non-equilibrium Meixner temperature overshoots in a shock wave in contrast to the kinetic temperature. This implies that the temperature overshoot is a matter of definition of the non-equilibrium temperature.

A new numerical approach is presented to compute the large deformations of shell-type structures made of the Saint Venant-Kirchhoff and Neo-Hookean materials based on the seven-parameter shell theory. A work conjugate pair of the first Piola Kirchhoff stress tensor and deformation gradient tensor is considered for the stress and strain measures in the paper. Through introducing the displacement vector, the deformation gradient, and the stress tensor in the Cartesian coordinate system and by means of the chain rule for taking derivative of tensors, the difficulties in using the curvilinear coordinate system are bypassed. The variational differential quadrature (VDQ) method as a pointwise numerical method is also used to discretize the weak form of the governing equations. Being locking-free, the simple implementation, computational efficiency, and fast convergence rate are the main features of the proposed numerical approach. Some well-known benchmark problems are solved to assess the approach. The results indicate that it is capable of addressing the large deformation problems of elastic and hyperelastic shell-type structures efficiently.
