The song of dunes as a wave-particle mode locking   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Singing dunes, which emit a loud sound as they avalanche, constitute a striking and poorly understood natural phenomenon. We show that, on the one hand, avalanches excite elastic waves at the surface of the dune, whose vibration produces the coherent acoustic emission in the air. The amplitude of the sound (approximately 105 dB) saturates exactly when the vibration makes the grains take off the flowing layer. On the other hand, we show that the sound frequency (approximately 100 Hz) is controlled by the shear rate inside the sand avalanche, which for granular matter is equivalent to the mean rate at which grains make collisions. This proves the existence of a feedback of elastic waves on particle motion, leading to a partial synchronization of the avalanching sand grains. It suggests that the song of dunes results from a wave-particle mode locking.  相似文献

Some desert sand dunes have the peculiar ability to emit a loud sound up to 110 dB, with a well-defined frequency: this phenomenon, known since early travelers (Darwin, Marco Polo, etc.), has been called the song of dunes. But only in late 19th century scientific observations were made, showing three important characteristics of singing dunes: first, not all dunes sing, but all the singing dunes are composed of dry and well-sorted sand; second, this sound occurs spontaneously during avalanches on a slip face; third this is not the only way to produce sound with this sand.More recent field observations have shown that during avalanches, the sound frequency does not depend on the dune size or shape, but on the grain diameter only, and scales as the square root of g/d - with g the gravity and d the diameter of the grains - explaining why all the singing dunes in the same vicinity sing at the same frequency.We have been able to reproduce these singing avalanches in laboratory on a hard plate, which made possible to study them more accurately than on the field. Signals of accelerometers at the flowing surface of the avalanche are compared to signals of microphones placed above, and it evidences a very strong vibration of the flowing layer at the same frequency as on the field, responsible for the emission of sound.Moreover, other characteristics of the booming dunes are reproduced and analyzed, such as a threshold under which no sound is produced, or beats in the sound that appears when the flow is too large. Finally, the size of the coherence zones emitting sound has been measured and discussed.  相似文献

The physics of dunes relies on the interaction between a wind flow and an erodible topography. Thus, if strong enough to transport grains, the wind shapes sandy areas into dune fields. These dunes are reminiscent of a wavy sea so that sandy deserts are called sand seas. However, the comparison stops there. Contrary to water waves, dunes propagate only under wind action and when the wind stops, they do not vanish but stand. Consequently, dunes are not only the result of the present winds, but can integrate the wind regimes over long periods. Thus, they exhibit a range of shapes and sizes with superimposed patterns. They are witnesses of past wind regimes and their shape and orientation are used to constraint climatic models on other planetary bodies where they are observed as well (e.g., Mars, Titan and Venus). Here, we discuss the morphodynamics of dunes and endeavor to identify and to explain the physical mechanisms at play in the selection of their shape, size and orientation, whilst focusing on Earth desert sand dunes.  相似文献

We present a simulation study of the charging of a dust grain immersed in a plasma, considering the effect of thermionic electron emission from the grain. It is shown that the orbit motion limited theory is no longer reliable when electron emission becomes large: screening can no longer be treated within the Debye-Huckel approach and an attractive potential well can form, leading to the possibility of attractive forces on other grains with the same polarity. We suggest to perform laboratory experiments where emitting dust grains could be used to create nonconventional dust crystals or macromolecules.  相似文献

Sand dunes form an important and unique system that can be mobile or fixed by vegetation. The common mobility indices of sand dunes, which are related to the wind and the amount of precipitation and potential evaporation, do not work in many dune fields around the world. The reasons for that lie in the singular physical characteristics of the sandy soil. Sand has high hydraulic conductivity causing a high rate of infiltration of rain water to the groundwater. Sand particles lack cohesion and that makes wind erosion the main limiting factor for vegetation. Hence, wind power, manifested by the drift potential (DP), is a good index for the limiting factor of plants on sand. The physical–biological interaction is further developed by hysteresis, which shows that a dune can become vegetated when the wind power is sufficiently low. Once vegetated, a much higher wind stress is needed to destroy the vegetation and re-activate the dunes.  相似文献

The motion of dunes and their morphology is a fascinating, largely unexplored subject. Already the barchan, the simplest moving dune, poses many questions. We will present some results of field measurements on desert and costal dunes. Then we will present a model which consists of three coupled equations of motion for the topography, the shear stress of the wind and the sand flux. The dust emission models to date cannot describe the relation between the transport rate of different sized grains and their grain size composition in soil surface, so Aeolian grain transport on a soil-like bed composed of fine sand and silt powder was measured in a wind tunnel. Six types of soil-like beds with different silt fractions have been tested in this experiment. The mass flux profiles of silt dust and sand grains are much different due to their different motion modes. Analysis of the vertical distribution of the powder and sand grains reveals that for a given soil bed, the ratio of the horizontal dust flux to the horizontal sand flux is directly proportional to their mass ratio in the bed. The dust flux is closely linked to the sand flux by the bombardment mechanism. For a given wind velocity and grain size of the bed, the slopes of the vertical mass flux profiles of sand grains larger than 100 μm are nearly equal in a log-linear plot and the ratio between the fraction of transport rate of each size group to the whole transport rate and the mass fraction of each size group in the bed is a constant only dependent on grain size. With this law, the transport rate of dust and different sized grains can be related with the grain size composition in the soil surface. This paper presents an experimental investigation of passively control of sound transmission through a double glazed window by using arrangement of Helmholtz resonators (HRs), which are commonly used for narrow band control application. The laboratory experiments were performed placing the window between reverberation chamber and anechoic chamber. The window was subject to diffuse field, approximate normal wave and oblique wave acoustic excitations. Three sets of HRs were designed and installed in cavity of window. The sound control performances at far-field were measured. The control performances from varying the number of HRs, incident acoustic field, excitation sources (band-limited white noise and traffic noise examples) are presented and discussed in detail. It is shown that a considerable reduction of the transmitted sound pressure levels has been achieved around the mass–air–mass resonance frequency (50–120 Hz). The obtained reductions in the transmitted sound pressure illustrate the potentials of HRs for improving the sound insulation characteristics of double glazed window. The experimental results also indicate that only tuning the HRs to the mass–air–mass resonance frequency does not guarantee the best possible insulation of the sound transmission.  相似文献

This paper presents results detailing the quantitative visualization of flow fields associated with natural sand dunes, Fraser River Estuary, Canada, using the complementary approaches of laboratory modelling and field instrumentation. Ultrasonic Doppler velocity profiling is used in the laboratory to elucidate the mean flow fields of low-angle dunes (leeside slope angle ≈14°) that are typical of many large natural rivers. These dunes do not possess a zone of permanent flow separation in the dune leeside and have a velocity structure that is dominated by the effects of flow acceleration and deceleration generated by topographic forcing of flow over the dune form. Turbulence associated with these dunes appears linked to both longer-period shear layer flapping and eddy generation along the shear layer. The field study uses acoustic Doppler profiling to reveal similar mean flow patterns and shows that flow is dominated by deceleration in the leeside without the presence of a region of permanent separated flow.  相似文献

The background noise generated by servo-hydraulic machines commonly used in laboratory tests of materials prevents the extraction of the maximum amount of acoustic emission data during fatigue experiments. Some of the solutions for removing background noise during monotonic tests are not applicable, and modern acoustic emission (ae) monitoring systems cannot detect all ae generated in the presence of continuous background noise. The best technique for reducing the background noise appears to be the insertion of a noise attenuating barrier between the noise source and the test specimen.Multilayer sound transmission theory is outlined to show that noise attenuators must be designed for the particular frequency at which the ae system is to operate. The theoretical basis for obtaining (for a given application) the optimum attenuation from attenuators constructed on an acoustic impedance mismatch basis is provided. Finally, physical properties of materials suitable for use in attenuator construction are tabulated.  相似文献

Combination of the superconductor and high conductive normal metal is now indispensable in the practical use of superconducting magnet. And the binding property of both materials is one of the key points whether superconductive characteristics are fully attained or the current fails prematurely in the practical magnet. But this binding evaluation is not so easy, because even in the mechanically well-jointed conductor, it often appears poor in electric and magnetic joint in cryogenic temperature. Since we have examined and reported fundamental AE properties of superconductor from UI-91, UI-93, UI-95, and UI-97, we have found the simple but important discovery for getting new information about the binding evaluation. Here we report a new technique for evaluating these bindings by observing ultrasonic spectra when a normal transition is propagated along the superconductor. We have discovered that a good contacting conductor has an emission of this sound with sharp resonating frequency peak or peaks at around the highest spectrum area; from 0.5 to 1.0 MHz. Our interpretation of the evaluations are so simple that we can say that binding degrees are best, good or bad, according to the resonating Q-value at around the highest spectrum of the ultrasonic sound.  相似文献

Based on the author's theory for acoustic propagation in granular media and by employing the extinction theorem, the sound speed formulae in these media were derived. The numerical computations of sound speed in 03ine sediments and air-filled sand were carried out, and the results demonstrated that under the normal atmosphere the sound speed in air- filled sand is lower than the sound speed in the air. The numerical results also indicated that the influence of scattering interaction between the grains upon the sound speed in the 03ine shallow-layer sandy sediments has to be taken into account; however, the influence of the viscous-wave interaction can be neglected. The theoretical results obtained from the rigid-granular model seem to match the measured data better than from the elastic-granular model, even the latter model fits better for the real situation, indicating further measurements are necessary in order to gain an insight into this problem thoroughly. Through an analysis of experimental data published in journals a conclusion can be drawn that the theory of granular media is suited to deal with the problems of the sound propagation in air-filled sand better than the theory of porous media.  相似文献

本文研究了在非均匀磁场尘埃等离子体中不规则尘埃颗粒的复杂运动, 包括圆滚运动、尖头圆滚运动、圆周运动以及波浪运动等. 放置在电极上的圆柱形磁铁的主要作用是改变鞘层的径向分布, 进而对颗粒产生径向约束, 使尘埃颗粒悬浮于圆柱形磁铁周围, 其磁场并不足以磁化颗粒使其做圆滚运动. 通过与球形尘埃颗粒的对比实验发现, 圆滚运动是不规则尘埃颗粒在等离子体中特有的一种运动. 我们提出了一种新的机理: 由于不规则颗粒的自旋而引起的横向反Magnus力对颗粒的圆滚运动起了重要的作用. 文中通过受力分析定性地对实验中观察到的非球形颗粒的各种运动给出了合理的解释.  相似文献

Vegetation is the most common and most reliable stabilizer of loose soil or sand. This ancient technique is for the first time cast into a set of equations of motion describing the competition between aeolian sand transport and vegetation growth. Our set of equations is then applied to study quantitatively the transition between barchans and parabolic dunes driven by the dimensionless fixation index theta which is the ratio between the dune characteristic erosion rate and vegetation growth velocity. We find a fixation index theta(c) below which the dunes are stabilized, characterized by scaling laws.  相似文献

海底沉积物作为海洋波导声传播的下边界普遍存在于大洋中,获知其特性对于准确的声传播和混响建模是十分必要的。为了能够快速而准确地测量沉积物中的声速和衰减系数,提出一种基于脉冲压缩技术的测量方法,对接收信号进行压缩来提取透射波,根据不同厚度样品的透射波来计算沉积物中的声速和衰减系数。该方法不仅可以克服实验过程中经常遇到的多途干扰,而且测量过程简单,可以同时获得测量频带内所有频点的声速和衰减系数,即实现了对声速和衰减系数的宽带测量。在实验室环境条件下,90~170kHz的测量频带内,测得沙样品中的声速为1710~1713m/s,衰减系数在56~70dB/m之间。通过窄带和宽带测量结果的比较可以看出,声速的宽带测量结果与窄带测量结果吻合得较好,而衰减系数在频带后半部分存在较大的起伏。   相似文献

在前文中我们已经给出小球在不均匀流场中运动时所受到的阻力。本文中我们假定泥沙和水为两种不同的介质,同时假定泥沙的浓度很小。利用前文所得到的阻力公式,我们建立了在层流状态时泥沙和水各自的运动方程组。然后利用这一组方程来讨论明渠中水流流态为层流时泥沙沉淀的情况。最后我们得到泥沙和水的相对速度在主流方向的分量并不等于零。同时我们求得根据简单假定来计算时所引起的沉积位置的误差。这个误差和水深成正比而和泥沙颗粒的大小无关。一般说来,这个误差并不是一个可以忽略的数值。  相似文献

This paper proposes an objective measurement methodology to assess the sound transmission paths through various earmuff components (cup, cushion, back-plate, foam insert, silicone flesh) and estimate the vibroacoustic couplings between them. The measurement methodology is applied to two different commercial earmuffs. For each Hearing Protection Device (HPD), the different sound paths are assessed, by analyzing separately the vibroacoustic behavior of each HPD component. In particular, the Insertion Loss (IL) of the lateral walls of the cushion is assessed, with and without pumping motion. The effect of the coupling between the different parts is also investigated from the comparison of the separate components with the complete earmuff. As shown in past studies, results confirm that the acoustical behavior of an earmuff is governed by the pumping motion and air leaks at low frequency and by the sound path through the cup and the cavity resonances at high frequency. However, at mid frequency, new counter-intuitive results are revealed. It is found that earmuffs do not behave as their weakest element, but rather as the one which has the highest attenuation. It is also observed that the foam insert can also decrease the IL. Complementary tests using other absorbing materials show that this effect could mainly be attributed to the absorption behaviors of each material at medium frequencies.  相似文献

The four experiments reported here measure listeners' accuracy and consistency in adjusting a formant frequency of one- or two-formant complex sounds to match the timbre of a target sound. By presenting the target and the adjustable sound on different fundamental frequencies, listeners are prevented from performing the task by comparing the absolute or relative levels of resolved spectral components. Experiment 1 uses two-formant vowellike sounds. When the two sounds have the same F0, the variability of matches (within-subject standard deviation) for either the first or the second formant is around 1%-3%, which is comparable to existing data on formant frequency discrimination thresholds. With a difference in F0, variability increases to around 8% for first-formant matches, but to only about 4% for second-formant matches. Experiment 2 uses sounds with a single formant at 1100 or 1200 Hz with both sounds on either low or high fundamental frequencies. The increase in variability produced by a difference in F0 is greater for high F0's (where the harmonics close to the formant peak are resolved) than it is for low F0's (where they are unresolved). Listeners also showed systematic errors in their mean matches to sounds with different high F0's. The direction of the systematic errors was towards the most intense harmonic. Experiments 3 and 4 showed that introduction of a vibratolike frequency modulation (FM) on F0 reduces the variability of matches, but does not reduce the systematic error. The experiments demonstrate, for the specific frequencies and FM used, that there is a perceptual cost to interpolating a spectral envelope across resolved harmonics.  相似文献

The problem examined is that of analysing the field of sound radiation caused due to the presence of a source in the immediate neighbourhood of a cylindrical jet in motion. The general analysis is restricted to low Mach number flow and special consideration is given to the high and low frequency limiting behaviour of the sound in the far field. The reflexion coefficient obtained in the high frequency case is exactly the same as that obtained by previous investigators for a source in the neighbourhood of an interface in relative motion [1, 2]. Also predicted here, however, is the existence of a “zone of excess attenuation” surrounding the jet fluid in motion, on both sides, far beyond the location of the acoustic source.  相似文献
