On a result of C. Mueller and E. Perkins

Summary. The equation du=(au”+bu′+cu) dt+νu ^γ W(dx,dt) is considered for γ∈(0,1). It is proved that u(t,·) has compact support for all t≥0 if u(0,·) does. This result extends a result of C. Mueller and E. Perkins who considered the case a=1,b=c=0. The proof does not use the nonstandard analysis unlike the one by C. Mueller and E. Perkins. The Full Theory of Conditional Elements: Enumerating,Exemplifying, and Evaluating Each of the Eight Conditional Elements

This paper presents a unified, more-or-less complete, and largely pragmatic theory of indicative conditionals as they occur in natural language, which is entirely truth-functional and does not involve probability. It includes material implication as a special—and the most important—case, but not as the only case. The theory of conditional elements, as we term it, treats if-statements analogously to the more familiar and less controversial other truth-functional compounds, such as conjunction and disjunction.

ABSTRACT

We prove that an ideal I of a regular ring R is separative if and only if each a ? R satisfying Rr(a)aR = Ra?(a)R = RaR(1 ? a)R ? I is unit-regular. If I is a separative ideal of a regular ring R, then each a ? R satisfying Rar(a²) = ?(a²)aR = R(a ? a²) R ? I is clean. Some applications are also obtained.     

Individual irrationality,network structure,and collective intelligence: An agent‐based simulation approach

An agent‐based model is constructed to study the effects of individual irrationality and network structure on collective performance. We find that individual irrationality and network density are the most influential factors. Moderate degree of irrationality results in moderate knowledge unity and superior quality of knowledge; increasing network connections or decreasing average path length (APL) can promote quality of knowledge integration and knowledge unity. Furthermore, APL is more influential than clustering coefficient and centralization (CE). Less clustering may contribute to higher quality of knowledge integration, while higher CE may contribute to higher knowledge unity. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Complexity 21: 44–54, 2016     

Contributions to a conjecture of Mueller and Schmidt on Thue inequalities

Let \(F(X,Y)=\sum \nolimits _{i=0}^sa_iX^{r_i}Y^{r-r_i}\in {\mathbb {Z}}[X,Y]\) be a form of degree \(r=r_s\ge 3\), irreducible over \({\mathbb {Q}}\) and having at most \(s+1\) non-zero coefficients. Mueller and Schmidt showed that the number of solutions of the Thue inequality

$$\begin{aligned} |F(X,Y)|\le h \end{aligned}$$

is \(\ll s^2h^{2/r}(1+\log h^{1/r})\). They conjectured that \(s^2\) may be replaced by s. Let

$$\begin{aligned} \Psi = \max _{0\le i\le s} \max \left( \sum _{w=0}^{i-1} \frac{1}{r_i-r_w},\sum _{w= i+1}^{s}\frac{1}{r_w-r_i}\right) . \end{aligned}$$

Then we show that \(s^2\) may be replaced by \(\max (s\log ^3s, se^{\Psi })\). We also show that if \(|a_0|=|a_s|\) and \(|a_i|\le |a_0|\) for \(1\le i\le s-1\), then \(s^2\) may be replaced by \(s\log ^{3/2}s\). In particular, this is true if \(a_i\in \{-1,1\}\).

     

Zero-Divisors,Torsion Elements,and Unions of Annihilators

Let R be a commutative ring and M be a nonzero R-module. Now Z(M) = {r ∈ R | rm = 0 for some 0 ≠ m ∈ M} is a union of prime ideals of R and T(M) = {m ∈ M | rm = 0 for some 0 ≠ r ∈ R} is a union of prime submodules of M if M ≠ T(M). We investigate representations of Z(M) and T(M) as unions of primes each of which is a union of annihilators.     

Free Akivis Algebras, Primitive Elements, and Hyperalgebras

Free Akivis algebras and primitive elements in their universal enveloping algebras are investigated. It is proved that subalgebras of free Akivis algebras are free and that finitely generated subalgebras are finitely residual. Decidability of the word problem for the variety of Akivis algebras is also proved.The conjecture of K. H. Hofmann and K. Strambach (Problem 6.15 in [Topological and analytic loops, in “Quasigroups and Loops Theory and Applications,” Series in Pure Mathematics (O. Chein, H. O. Pflugfelder, and J. D. H. Smith, Eds.), Vol. 8, pp. 205–262, Heldermann Verlag, Berlin, 1990]) on the structure of primitive elements is proved to be not valid, and a full system of primitive elements in free nonassociative algebra is constructed.Finally, it is proved that every algebra B can be considered as a hyperalgebra, that is, a system with a series of multilinear operations that plays a role of a tangent algebra for a local analytic loop, where the hyperalgebra operations on B are interpreted by certain primitive elements.     

Symmetric Elements,Hermitian Forms,and Cyclic Involutions

Let k be a field, K/k be a quadratic separable field extension, and 𝒜 a finite dimensional central simple algebra over K. If k is global or the field of fractions of a two-dimensional excellent henselian local domain with an algebraically closed residue field of characteristic zero and the degree of 𝒜 is odd, we prove that all K/k-involutions on 𝒜 are cyclic.

Exceptional Families of Elements,Feasibility and Complementarity

Feasibility is an important property for a complementarity problem. A complementarity problem is solvable if it is feasible and some supplementary assumptions are satisfied. In this paper, we introduce the notion of (, )-exceptional family of elements for a continuous function and we apply this notion to the study of feasibility of nonlinear complementarity problems.
