A metal‐free, cationic, reversible addition–fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT) polymerization was proposed and realized. A series of thiocarbonylthio compounds were used in the presence of a small amount of triflic acid for isobutyl vinyl ether to give polymers with controlled molecular weight of up to 1×105 and narrow molecular‐weight distributions (Mw/Mn<1.1). This “living” or controlled cationic polymerization is applicable to various electron‐rich monomers including vinyl ethers, p‐methoxystyrene, and even p‐hydroxystyrene that possesses an unprotected phenol group. A transformation from cationic to radical RAFT polymerization enables the synthesis of block copolymers between cationically and radically polymerizable monomers, such as vinyl ether and vinyl acetate or methyl acrylate.  相似文献

Random copolymers with high molecular weights of indene and p‐methylstyrene (pMeSt) were synthesized by cationic polymerization with trichloroacetic acid/tin tetrachloride in CH2Cl2 at low temperatures. When indene and pMeSt (1:1 v/v), for example, were polymerized at ?40 °C, both monomers were consumed at very similar rates to give a copolymer with high molecular weight [number‐average molecular weight (Mn): 8–9 × 104]. This is indeed quite unexpected behavior for the combination of these two monomers because pMeSt polymerized over 1000 times faster than indene in the homopolymerization under the reaction conditions previously described. The product copolymer of indene and pMeSt had a random monomer sequence in it that was confirmed by NMR analyses and thermal‐property measurements. In sharp contrast with pMeSt, styrene and p‐chlorostyrene, which have no electron‐donating groups on the phenyl ring, led to low molecular weight polymers (Mn < 10,000) in the copolymerization with indene (1:1 v/v). © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The organo‐rare‐earth‐metal‐initiated living polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was first discovered in 1992 with (C5Me5)2LnR (where R is H or Me and Ln is Sm, Yb, Y, or La) as an initiator. These polymerizations provided highly syndiotactic (>96%) poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with a high number‐average molecular weight (Mn > 1000 × 103) and a very narrow molecular weight distribution [weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight (Mw/Mn) < 1.04] quantitatively in a short period. Bridged rare‐earth‐metallocene derivatives were used to perform the block copolymerization of ethylene or 1‐hexene with MMA, methyl acrylate, cyclic carbonate, or ?‐caprolactone in a voluntary ratio. Highly isotactic (97%), monodisperse, high molecular weight (Mn > 500 × 103, Mw/Mn < 1.1) PMMA was first obtained in 1998 with [(Me3Si)3C]2Yb. Stereocomplexes prepared by the mixing of the resulting syndiotactic and isotactic PMMA revealed improved physical properties. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Homopolymers of adipic anhydride (AA) and block copolymers of ϵ-caprolactone (ϵ-CL) and AA have been synthesized with aluminum triisopropoxide as an initiator. Homopolymerization was studied at 20°C in toluene and methylene chloride (CH2Cl2). The end-group analysis agrees with a coordination insertion mechanism based on the acyl-oxygen cleavage of the AA ring. Living poly(ϵ-caprolactone) (PCL) chains are very efficient macro-initiators for the polymerization of AA, with formation of diblock copolymers of a narrow molecular weight distribution. At our best knowledge, low molecular weight ω-aluminum alkoxide PCL macroinitiators (Mn < 1000) allow the first valuable synthesis of PAA with a molecular weight as high as 58,000 and a quite narrow polydispersity (Mw/Mn = 1.2). Size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) and 13C NMR confirm the blocky structure of the copolymers, in agreement with DSC that shows two melting endotherms and two glass transitions characteristic of the crystalline and amorphous phases of PCL and PAA, respectively. Block copolymers of ϵ-CL and AA are also sensitive to hydrolysis, which makes them possible candidates for biomedical applications. Initiation of the AA polymerization in bulk with aluminum triisopropoxide in the presence of various ligands is also discussed. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Dendritic polyarylether 2‐bromoisobutyrates of different generations (Gn‐Br, n = 1–3) as macroinitiators for the atom transfer radical copolymerization of N‐hexylmaleimide and styrene in an ionic liquid, 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, were investigated. The copolymerization carried out in the ionic liquid with CuBr/pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as a catalyst at room temperature afforded polymers with well‐defined molecular weights and low polydispersities (1.18 < Mw/Mn < 1.36, where Mw is the weight‐average molecular weight and Mn is the number‐average molecular weight), and the resultant copolymers possessed an alternating structure over a wide range of monomer feeds (f1 = 0.3–0.8). Meanwhile, the copolymerization was also conducted in anisole at 110 °C under similar conditions so that the effect of the reaction media on the polymerization could be evaluated. The monomer reactivity ratios showed that the tendency to form alternating copolymers for the two monomers was stronger in ionic liquids than in anisole. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. TEMPO‐mediated free radical polymerization was employed for homo‐ and copolymerization of vinylferrocene (Vfc). Homopolymerization of Vfc resulted in relatively narrow polydispersities (Mw/Mn = 1.24–1.8), however, molecular weights were limited to 4 800. Copolymerization with styrene afforded random copolymers with molecular weights (Mn) up to 10 000, narrow polydispersity (1.2 > Mw/Mn > 1.4) and up to 42 mol‐% Vfc. Block copolymers with PS block and P(S‐co‐Vfc) block with molecular weights (Mn) in the range of 9 000 to 17 600 (Mw/Mn > 1.3) were also prepared with up to 17 mol‐% vinylferrocene. DSC revealed two glass transition temperatures (Tg) evidencing phase separation.  相似文献

High molecular weight polystyrene (PS) was synthesized by ATRP. Under atmospheric pressure (1 bar), PS with Mn up to 200,000 was prepared using either ARGET or ICAR ATRP. Under high pressure (6 kbar), higher molecular weight PS could be obtained due to accelerated radical propagation and diminished radical termination in polymerization of styrene. Therefore, it was possible to synthesize PS with Mn > 1,000,000 and Mw/Mn < 1.25 using AGET ATRP under a pressure of 6 kbar at room temperature. This is the highest molecular weight linear PS prepared by a controlled radical polymerization.  相似文献

Polydisperse hyperbranched polyesters were modified for use as novel multifunctional reversible addition–fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT) agents. The polyester‐core‐based RAFT agents were subsequently employed to synthesize star polymers of n‐butyl acrylate and styrene with low polydispersity (polydispersity index < 1.3) in a living free‐radical process. Although the polyester‐core‐based RAFT agent mediated polymerization of n‐butyl acrylate displayed a linear evolution of the number‐average molecular weight (Mn) up to high monomer conversions (>70%) and molecular weights [Mn > 140,000 g mol?1, linear poly(methyl methacrylate) equivalents)], the corresponding styrene‐based system reached a maximum molecular weight at low conversions (≈30%, Mn = 45,500 g mol?1, linear polystyrene equivalents). The resulting star polymers were subsequently used as platforms for the preparation of star block copolymers of styrene and n‐butyl acrylate with a polyester core with low polydispersities (polydispersity index < 1.25). The generated polystyrene‐based star polymers were successfully cast into highly regular honeycomb‐structured microarrays. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of di‐ and triblock copolymers using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of n‐butyl acrylate (BA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) is reported. In particular, synthetic procedures that allow for an easy and convenient synthesis of such block copolymers were developed by using CuBr and CuCl salts complexed with linear amines. Polymerizations were successfully conducted where the monomers were added to the reactor in a sequential manner. Poor cross‐propagation between poly(n‐butyl acrylate) (PBA) macroinitiators and MMA was minimized, and therefore control of molecular weights and distributions was realized, by using halogen exchange—a technique involving the addition of CuCl to the MMA during the chain extension of the PBA macroinitiator. High molecular weight (Mn ∼ 90,000) and low polydispersity (Mw /Mn < 1.35) ABA triblock copolymers were also prepared and their structure and properties in bulk have been preliminary characterized indicating the potential of ATRP for the production of all‐acrylic thermoplastic elastomers. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Linear and crosslinked copolymers with different compositions of 1-hexadecene and trimethylolpropane distearate monoacrylate monomers were synthesized and evaluated for oil-absorbency application. Different concentrations of ethylene glycol diacrylate (EGDA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) crosslinkers were used. The concentration of both crosslinkers was varied from 0.5% to 2%. Copolymer compositions were determined from 1H NMR spectroscopy. Monomer reactivity ratios were calculated using Fineman-Ross and Kelen-Tudos techniques at low conversions. The oil absorbency and swelling rate constant were measured and influenced mainly by the degree of crosslinking and the hydrophobicity of copolymer units. The final equilibrium oil content, volume fraction of polymer and swelling capacity were determined at 298 K. The effective crosslinking density Ve, theoretical crosslink density Vt, the average molecular weight between the crosslinks Mc and the polymer-toluene interaction parameter χ were determined from swelling measurements. The efficiencies of EGDA and EGDMA crosslinking agents toward copolymers were determined.  相似文献

We have analyzed fractionated samples of poly(methacrylic acid) produced in a propagating front for the amount of anhydride that formed and determined that a large percentage of acid groups exist as anhydrides (>20%). By analyzing the samples after cleavage, we found that the molecular weight dropped significantly (from Mn = 1.4 × 105 to Mn = 1.0 × 104). We conclude that the high molecular weights observed previously were the result of intermolecular anhydride formation. Poly(butyl acrylate), which cannot form anhydride bonds, produced in fronts had broad (Mw/Mn = 1.7–2.0) but unimodal molecular weight distributions with Mu < 105. The average molecular weight decreased with increasing initiator concentrations. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Abstract

The flexural strengths of N-vinylpyrrolidone modified glass-ionomer cements were investigated. The optimal molar ratio of the monomers in copolymers, composed of the three components acrylic acid, itaconic acid and N-vinylpyrrolidone, was determined using a SAS statistical program. The copolymers were prepared using a free-radical polymerization process. The viscosities of aqueous solutions of these polymers were determined. Cements were formed by the reaction of these solutions with glass particles. Flexural strength (FS) was used as the basic screening property to find the optimum molar ratio. Statistical models were applied to predict the optimum molar ratios. All strength values were recorded on the specimens conditioned in distilled water at 37°C for 7 days. The optimal molar ratio for these copolymers was 7:1:3 for poly(acrylic acid-co-itaconic acid-co-N-vinylpyrrolidone), based on flexural strength and viscosity. The effect of molecular weight (MW) on FS was also evaluated. Copolymer with a MW of 10, 800 (Mn) showed 85% higher FS than the Ketac-Molar (KM) system, along with a reasonable working viscosity.  相似文献

Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) macromonomers capped by a polymerizable norbornene end-group have been synthesized and (co)polymerized by ring-opening metathesis with formation of graft copolymers and polymacromonomers. α-Norbornenyl PCL macromonomers have been synthesized by ring opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone (εCL) initiated by 2-diethylaluminoxymethyl-5-norbornene. Copolymerization of these PCL macromonomers with norbornene and polymerizable derivatives has been catalyzed by the [RuCl2(p-cymene)]2 PCy3/(trimethylsilyl)diazomethane complex yielding a series of poly(norbornene)-graft-poly(ε-caprolactone) copolymers. These new graft copolymers have been characterized by a set of analytical methods, i.e., SEC, 1H-NMR, FTIR, DSC, and TGA. Furthermore, PCL macromonomers have been polymerized into high molecular weight comb chains of narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn = 1.10) within high yields (90%). © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Nine active ester monomers based on 4-vinylbenzoic acid have been synthesized. Under free radical polymerization conditions these monomers could successfully be polymerized yielding reactive polymers with molecular weights of around Mn = 20.000-50.000 g/mol and molecular weight distributions Mw/Mn of around or below 2 in good yields. Polymer analogous reactions with amines have been investigated by time-resolved FT-IR spectroscopy and it was found that especially poly(pentafluorophenyl 4-vinylbenzoate) featured a significant reactivity, such that polymer analogous reactions proceeded quantitatively with amines within less than 5 min at 0 °C.  相似文献

Well‐defined amphiphilic polymethylene‐b‐poly (acrylicacid) diblock copolymers have been synthesized via a new strategy combining polyhomologation and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Hydroxyl‐terminated polymethylenes (PM‐OH) with different molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distribution are obtained through the polyhomologation of dimethylsulfoxonium methylides following quantitative oxidation via trimethylamine‐N‐oxide dihydrate. Subsequently, polymethylene‐based macroinitiators (PM‐MIs Mn = 1,300 g mol?1 [Mw/Mn = 1.11] and Mn = 3,300 g mol?1 [Mw/Mn = 1.04]) are synthesized by transformation of terminal hydroxyl group of PM‐OH to α‐haloester in ~100% conversion. ATRPs of tert‐butyl acrylate (t‐BuA) are then carried out using PM‐MIs as initiator to construct PM‐b‐P(t‐BuA) diblock copolymers with controllable molecular weight (Mn = 8,800–15,800 g mol?1 Mw/Mn = 1.04–1.09) and different weight ratio of PM/P(t‐BuA) segment (1:1.7–1:11.2). The amphiphilic PM‐b‐PAA diblock copolymers are finally prepared by hydrolysis of PM‐b‐P(t‐BuA) copolymers and their self‐assembly behavior in water is preliminarily investigated via the determination of critical micelle concentrations, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscope (TEM). © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract

The nature of the averaging process in the analysis of gel permeation chromatograms was examined for cases where the molecules in the detector cell of the apparatus were of different molecular weight and of the same molecular weight. When the molecules have the same molecular weight, the hydrodynamic volume (1), [?]M, averaged across a chromatogram was found to become KMa+1 for any molecular weight average at the elution volume corresponding to that average. [η] is intrinsic viscosity, M is molecular weight, and K and a are the appropriate Mark-Houwink constants. Thus when size separation is by molecular weight, the universal GPC calibration functions include KMn a+1 where Mn is the number average molecular weight.

Cellulose nitrate and poly(oxypropylene) were analyzed using three sets of columns and two GPC instruments. KMn a+1, KMw a+1, and [η]Mw were found to represent the hydrodynamic volume since these functions fell on the universal calibration plot for nearly nono-disperse polystyrene standards. The function [η]Mn was displaced from the polystyrene universal calibration plot by factor which equaled Mw/Mn. The slopes and intercepts of the universal calibration plots were found to be completely consistent with the slopes and intercepts of the molecular weight calibration plots showing that the Mark-Houwink constants were correct. Intrinsic viscosity - molecular weight relations were presented for 12.0–12.6%N cellulose nitrate and for low molecular weight poly(oxypropylene), the latter relation being a correction of that of Sholtan and Lie (18).  相似文献

The first general single-step route to dendritic or cascade polyaryl ethers analogous to common linear polyaryl ethers is described. The sodium salts of four AB2 monomers each containing a single phenolic hydroxyl group and two aryl fluorides activated toward nucleophilic substitution by carbonyl, sulphonyl, or tetrafluorophenyl moieties are shown to polymerize in hot N, N-dimethylacetamide. The products are high molecular weight polymers (7000 < Mn < 36000), have narrow polydispersities (1.50 < Mw/Mn < 4.50), and are highly soluble in organic solvents. The molecular weights of two of the polymers increase with monomer concentration. The polymers are thermally stable (500 °C under N2) and have glass transition temperatures ranging from 135 to 231 °C.  相似文献

The synthesis of vinyl alcohol copolymers is limited due to the poor radical reactivity of vinyl acetate (VAc), the traditional precursor to polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Main group monomers such as BN 2-vinylnaphthalene (BN2VN) have attracted attention as alternatives to VAc to form side chain hydroxyls via oxidation, but outstanding questions of molecular weight control remain. Herein we report systematic investigation of solvent, temperature, and initiator concentration as factors influencing BN2VN degree of polymerization. We find increased chain transfer to toluene, hypothesized to arise from differences in radical stabilization and reactivity by aromatic and BN aromatic rings. As a result of these combined efforts, high molecular weight (Mw ~ 105 g mol−1) BN2VN homopolymers and BN2VN-styrene copolymers were obtained.  相似文献

2-Dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and 2-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) block copolymers have been synthesized by using poly(ethylene glycol), poly(tetrahydrofuran) (PTHF) and poly(ethylene butylenes) macroinitiators with copper mediated living radical polymerization. The use of difunctional macroinitiator gave ABA block copolymers with narrow polydispersities (PDI) and controlled number average molecular weights (Mn’s). By using DMAEMA, polymerizations proceed with excellent first order kinetics indicative of well-controlled living polymerization. Online 1H NMR monitoring has been used to investigate the polymerization of DEAEMA. The first order kinetic plots for the polymerization of DEAMA showed two different rate regimes ascribed to an induction period which is not observed for DMAEMA. ABA triblock copolymers with DMAEMA as the A blocks and PTHF or PBD as B blocks leads to amphiphilic block copolymers with Mn’s between 22 and 24 K (PDI 1.24-1.32) which form aggregates/micelles in solution. The critical aggregation concentrations, as determined by pyrene fluorimetry, are 0.07 and 0.03 g dm−1 for PTHF- and PBD-containing triblocks respectively.  相似文献

This contribution describes the development and demonstration of the ambient‐temperature, high‐speed living polymerization of polar vinyl monomers (M) with a low silylium catalyst loading (≤ 0.05 mol % relative to M). The catalyst is generated in situ by protonation of a trialkylsilyl ketene acetal (RSKA) initiator (I) with a strong Brønsted acid. The living character of the polymerization system has been demonstrated by several key lines of evidence, including the observed linear growth of the chain length as a function of monomer conversion at a given [M]/[I] ratio, near‐precise polymer number‐average molecular weight (Mn, controlled by the [M]/[I] ratio) with narrow molecular weight distributions (MWD), absence of an induction period and chain‐termination reactions (as revealed by kinetics), readily achievable chain extension, and the successful synthesis of well‐defined block copolymers. Fundamental steps of activation, initiation, propagation, and catalyst “self‐repair” involved in this living polymerization system have been elucidated, chiefly featuring a propagation “catalysis” cycle consisting of a rate‐limiting C? C bond formation step and fast release of the silylium catalyst to the incoming monomer. Effects of acid activator, catalyst and monomer structure, and reaction temperature on polymerization characteristics have also been examined. Among the three strong acids incorporating a weakly coordinating borate or a chiral disulfonimide anion, the oxonium acid [H(Et2O)2]+[B(C6F5)4]? is the most effective activator, which spontaneously delivers the most active R3Si+, reaching a high catalyst turn‐over frequency (TOF) of 6.0×103 h?1 for methyl methacrylate polymerization by Me3Si+ or an exceptionally high TOF of 2.4×105 h?1 for n‐butyl acrylate polymerization by iBu3Si+, in addition to its high (>90 %) to quantitative efficiencies and a high degree of control over Mn and MWD (1.07–1.12). An intriguing catalyst “self‐repair” feature has also been demonstrated for the current living polymerization system.  相似文献
