The surface of a poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) film was modified with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) by plasma-initiated polymerization to increase the interaction between PLLA and cellulose single nanofibres (CSNF). The surface wettability of the PAA grafted PLLA film (PLLA-PAA film) was investigated by contact angle measurements. Modification of the PLLA film with PAA decreased the contact angle from 61° to 50°. The surface morphologies of the PLLA film, PLLA-PAA film and CSNF-coated PLLA-PAA film were studied by atomic force microscopy. The interaction between the CSNF and PLLA layers was strengthened by incorporation of a PAA layer onto the PLLA films and it is higher than 2N as proved by a peeling test. This is probably because the carboxyl groups of PAA form hydrogen bonds with the hydroxyl groups of CSNF.  相似文献

Linear and branched poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) copolymers with polyethylene glycol) (PEG) methyl ether (700 or 2000 g/mol) end groups were synthesized using conventional melt polymerization. DSC analysis demonstrated that low levels of PEG end groups accelerated PET crystallization. The incorporated PEG end groups also decreased the crystallization temperature of PET dramatically, and copolymers with a high content of PEG (>17.6 wt%) were able to crystallize at room temperature. Rheological analysis demonstrated that the presence of PEG end groups effectively decreased the melt viscosities and facilitated melt processing. XPS and ATR-FTIR revealed that the PEG end groups tended to aggregate on the surface, and the surface of compression molded films containing 34.0 wt% PEG were PEG rich (85 wt% PEG). PEG end-capped PET (34.0 wt% PEG) and PET films were immersed into a fibrinogen solution (0.7 mg/mL BSA) for 72 h to investigate the propensity for protein adhesion. XPS demonstrated that the concentration of nitrogen (1.05%) on the surface of PEG endcapped PET film was statistically lower than PET (7.67%). SEM analysis was consistent with XPS results, and revealed the presence of adsorbed protein on the surface of PET films.  相似文献

An investigation of the electrochemical behaviour of gold electrodes coated with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and nanopatterned PAA/PEG layers is presented. Plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition and colloidal lithography were used to produce nanodomes of PAA in a matrix of PEG. The electrochemical response at these nanostructured electrodes was studied as a function of the probe ion charge. Results show that the film structures allow the electrodes to retain their electrochemical activity while minimising surface fouling and will thus be useful in the development of electrochemical nanobiosensors for various applications.  相似文献

Transparent thin films of calcium‐ion‐incorporated polymer composites were synthesized with calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and polymers such as poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), and methylcellulose. The homogeneous distribution of Ca2+ in the composite films was observed because of the high concentration of COO? groups along the PAA backbone for the complexation of Ca2+ ions. The optical transparency of the composites depends on the weight percentages of the three polymers and the molar concentration of CaCO3 in the composites. Maximum transparency was obtained for a composite film with a PAA/CaCO3 ratio of 9:1. The results indicated that methylcellulose improved the film‐forming capabilities and that PEG improved the transparency of the composites. All polymer complexes were characterized with X‐ray diffraction, fourier transfer infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy, dynamic mechanical analysis, and optical transparency measurements. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, we demonstrate that by tethering carboxyl groups of poly(10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid) (PDA) to a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix, PDA, which is irreversible in its pure form, becomes reversible in the thermochromism. The tethering is realized by simple but deliberately designed processes: (1) Disperse the commercially available monomer 10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid (DA) nanocrystals in a PVA aqueous solution by the "NCCM" method invented in our laboratory. (2) Anneal and dry the mixture solution at a temperature higher than the melting point of pure DA crystal. (3) Polymerize the as-annealed DA/PVA blend films by UV irradiation. After the polymerization, PDA/PVA films with completely reversible thermochromism are obtained. The reversible PDA/PVA films can be easily dissolved in water, leading to water-dispersible nanoaggregates with the reversibility. Blends of PDA with other water-soluble polymers such as poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(allyamine) (PAM), were prepared respectively, by the same processes and under the same conditions. It is found that all these nanocomposites are irreversible or partially reversible in the thermochromism; either the relatively low glassy transition temperature of the polymer matrix (in the case of PEO) or the partial ionization nature of the polymer (in the cases of PAA and PAM) is responsible for the irreversibility or the partial reversibility.  相似文献

Abstract

Electrostatically layered aluminosilicate nanocomposites have been prepared by the sequential deposition of poly(allylamine hydrochloride)/poly(acrylic acid)/poly(allylamine hydrochloride)/saponite (PAH/PAA/PAH/saponite)10 on poly(ethylene terephtalate) (PET) film. Exfoliated saponite nanoplatelets were obtained by extensive shaking, sonication, and centrifugation of a water suspension. To minimize permeability and improve the mechanical integrity, cross‐linking of composite films was carried out at different temperatures. The formation of amide linkage induced through heating was observed by Fourier Transform Infrared (FT‐IR) and x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The cross‐linking of nanocomposites (PAH/PAA/PAH/saponite)10 showed 60% decrease in permeability of oxygen when compared with the pristine PET substrate film. In contrast, water permeability of the nanocomposite membrane was not affected by heating temperature and deposition cycles.  相似文献

Polyelectrolyte multilayer thin films were prepared via the alternate deposition of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and a blend of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS). When the pH of the blend solution was 3.5, the presence of PAA in this solution significantly increased the total film thickness. With only 10 wt % PAA in the blend adsorption solution, a large increase in film thickness was observed (92 nm cf. 18 nm). It was also demonstrated that the total amount of PSS adsorbed was enhanced by the presence of PAA in the blend solution, showing that the blend solution composition influenced that of the multilayer films. Thin films prepared with nanoblended layers also showed improved pH stability, because they exhibited reduced film rearrangement upon exposure to acidic conditions (pH = 2.5).  相似文献

Protoporphyrin IX and zinc protoporphyrin IX were grafted to the surface of nylon‐6,6 films via an ethylene diamine bridge and a poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) scaffold. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that approximately 57% of the nylon surface was covered by PAA and approximately 6% of the carboxylic acid groups in PAA were grafted to the ethylene diamine derivative of protoporphyrin IX or its zinc salt. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Porous sol–gel (PSG) film has been utilized as a template for the electrochemical polymerization of aniline in presence of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). The presence of electroactive polyaniline (PAn)/PAA within the porous skeleton of the sol–gel films has been confirmed using cyclic voltammetry, UV–vis spectrometry and atomic force microscopic measurements. The densities and the sizes of the nanoelectrodes can be controlled easily using electrochemical methods. The conductive polymer “wires” of PAn/PAA formation in PSG matrix can behave as an ensemble of closely-spaced but isolated nanoelectrodes. Moreover, the nanoelectrode ensembles based on conductive PAn/PAA for glucose biosensing are fabricated by immobilization of glucose oxidase (GOx) and Nafion onto the surface of conductive polymer. Owing to the biocompatibility of PSG and electro-activity of PAn/PAA at neutral pH regions, the glucose biosensor shows excellent characteristics and performance, such as low detection limit and fast response time.  相似文献

Layer-by-layer (LbL) assemblies have attracted much attention for their functional versatility and ease of fabrication. However, characterizing their thermal properties in relation to the film thickness has remained a challenging topic. We have investigated the role of film thickness on the glass transition temperature (T(g)) and coeffecient of thermal expansion for poly(ethylene oxide)/poly(acrylic acid) (PEO/PAA) and PEO/poly(methacrylic acid) (PEO/PMAA) hydrogen-bonded LbL assemblies in both bulk and ultrathin films using modulated differential scanning calorimetry (modulated DSC) and temperature-controlled ellipsometry. In PEO/PAA LbL films, a single, well-defined T(g) was observed regardless of film thickness. The T(g) increased by 9 °C relative to the bulk T(g) as film thickness decreased to 30 nm because of interactions between the film and its substrate. In contrast, PEO/PMAA LbL films show a single glass transition only after a thermal cross-linking step, which results in anhydride bonds between PMAA groups. The T(g), within error, was unaffected by film thickness, but PEO/PMAA LbL films of thicknesses below ~2.7 μm exhibited a small amount of PEO crystallization and phase separation for the thermally cross-linked films. The coefficients of thermal expansion of both types of film increased with decreasing film thickness.  相似文献

We report the use of copolymers synthesized with specific block ratios of weakly and strongly charged groups for the preparation of stable, pH-responsive multilayers. In this study, we utilized reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization in the synthesis of novel pH-sensitive copolymers comprising block domains of acrylic acid (AA) and styrene sulfonate (SS) groups. The PAA x- b-SS y copolymers, containing 37%, 55%, and 73% of AA groups by mass (denoted as PAA 37- b-SS 63, PAA 55- b-SS 45, and PAA 73- b-SS 27, respectively), were utilized to perform stepwise multilayer assembly in alternation with poly(allylamine hydrochloride), PAH. The ratio of AA to SS groups, and the effect of the pH of both anionic and cationic adsorption solutions, on multilayer properties, were investigated using ellipsometry and atomic force microscopy. The presence of SS moieties in the PAA x- b-SS y copolymers, regardless of the precise composition, lead to films with a relatively consistent thickness. Exposure of these multilayers to acidic conditions postassembly revealed that these multilayers do not exhibit the characteristic large swelling that occurs with PAA/PAH films. The film stability was attributed to the presence of strongly charged SS groups. PAA x- b-SS y/PAH films were also formed on particle substrates under various adsorption conditions. Microelectrophoresis measurements revealed that the surface charge and isoelectric point of these core-shell particles are dependent on assembly pH and the proportion of AA groups in PAA x- b-SS y. These core-shell particles can be used as precursors to hollow capsules that incorporate weak polyelectrolyte functionality. The role of AA groups in determining the growth profile of these capsules was also examined. The multilayer films prepared may find applications in areas where pH-responsive films are required but large film swelling is unfavorable.  相似文献

Well-defined amphiphilic seven-arm star triblock copolymers containing hydrophobic crystalline poly(ε-caprolactone)(PCL) blocks, hydrophobic non-crystalline poly(tert-butyl acrylate)(PtBA) blocks and hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG) blocks were precisely synthesized by a combination of ring-opening polymerization(ROP), atom transfer radical polymerization(ATRP) and “click” reaction. Such star copolymers could self-assemble into “core-shell-corona” micelles and “multi-layer” vesicles depending on the fraction of each block. Meanwhile, the selective hydrolysis of middle PtBA blocks into the poly(acrylic acid)(PAA) blocks allowed the star block copolymers to further change their morphologies of aqueous aggregates in response to pH values.  相似文献

Polymer-supported lipid bilayer is a key enabling technology for the design and fabrication of novel biomimetic devices. To date, the physical driving force underlying the formation of polymer-supported lipid bilayer remains to be determined. In this study, the interaction between dipalmitoylphosphocholine (DPPC) vesicle and poly(ethylene terephthalate) [PET] surface with or without grafted poly(acrylic acid) [PAA] layer is examined with several biophysical techniques. First, vesicle deformation analysis shows that the geometry of adherent vesicle on either plain PET or PAA-grafted PET surface is best described by a truncated sphere model. At neutral pH, the degree of deformation and adhesion energy are unaltered by the grafted polymerization of acrylic acid on PET surface. Interestingly, the average magnitude of adhesion energy is increased by 185% and −43% on PAA-grated PET and plain PET surface, respectively, towards an increase of pH at room temperature. Our results demonstrate the possibility of tuning the adhesive interaction between vesicle and polymer cushion through the control of polyelectrolyte ionization on the solid support.  相似文献

We report on the influence of polyanion molecular weight on the growth and structure of multilayered thin films fabricated from poly(allylamine) (PAH) and well-defined, end-labeled poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization. We observed striking differences in the growth of PAH/PAA films fabricated using well-defined PAA compared to films fabricated using higher molecular weight, commercially available PAA. Past studies demonstrate that the thicknesses of PAH/PAA films increase as linear functions of the number of PAH and PAA layers deposited over a broad range of pH (e.g., from pH 2.5 to 4.5). We observed the thicknesses of films fabricated using solutions of PAH and PAA adjusted to pH 7.5 and 3.5, respectively, to increase in a nonlinear manner. Films fabricated using well-defined, low molecular weight samples of PAA under these conditions increased in thickness exponentially. Experiments using samples of PAA having substantially non-overlapping molecular weight distributions demonstrated a clear relationship between the molecular weight of PAA and rates of film growth. We also used confocal microscopy, in combination with fluorescently end-labeled samples of PAA, to characterize the location of PAA in these assemblies. The results of these experiments, when combined, support the general conclusion that PAA is able to penetrate or diffuse into these films over large distances during assembly. The mechanism of growth for these films thus appears similar to that recently reported for the exponential growth of films fabricated using a variety of biologically relevant polyelectrolytes. The use of living/controlled methods of polymerization to synthesize well-defined samples of PAA facilitates an interpretation of these differences in film behavior as arising largely from differences in polymer molecular weight and polydispersity. This work provides insight into the assembly and structure of a well-studied weak polyelectrolyte film system and illustrates the potential of living/controlled methods of polymerization to contribute to the characterization and understanding of the physical properties of these ionically cross-linked materials.  相似文献

We report the development of a solid polymer electrolyte film from hydrogen bonding layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly that outperforms previously reported LBL assembled films and approaches battery integration capability. Films were fabricated by alternating deposition of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) layers from aqueous solutions. Film quality benefits from increasing PEO molecular weight even into the 10(6) range due to the intrinsically low PEO/PAA cross-link density. Assembly is disrupted at pH near the PAA ionization onset, and a potential mechanism for modulating PEO:PAA ratio within assembled films by manipulating pH is discussed. Ionic conductivity of 5 x 10(-5) S/cm is achievable after short exposure to 100% relative humidity (RH) for plasticization. Adding free ions by exposing PEO/ PAA films to lithium salt solutions enhanced conductivity to greater than 10(-5) S/cm at only 52% RH and tentatively greater than 10(-4) S/cm at 100% RH. The excellent stability of PEO/PAA films even when exposed to 1.0 M salt solutions led to an exploration of LBL assembly with added electrolyte present in the adsorption step. Fortuitously, the modulation of PEO/PAA assembly by ionic strength is analogous to that of electrostatic LBL assembly and can be attributed to electrolyte interactions with PEO and PAA. Dry ionic conductivity was enhanced in films assembled in the presence of salt as compared to films that were merely exposed to salt after assembly, implying different morphologies. These results reveal clear directions for the evolution of these promising solid polymer electrolytes into elements appropriate for electrochemical power storage and generation applications.  相似文献

Carboxyl groups along poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) brushes attached to the surface of a gold-coated substrate served as the precursor moieties for the covalent immobilization of amino-functionalized biotin or bovine serum albumin (BSA) to form a sensing probe for streptavidin (SA) or anti-BSA detection, respectively. Surface-grafted PAA brushes were obtained by acid hydrolysis of poly(tert-butyl acrylate) brushes, formerly prepared by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization of tert-butyl acrylate. As determined by surface plasmon resonance, the PAA brushes immobilized with functionalized biotin or BSA probes not only showed good binding with the designated target analytes but also maintained a high resistance to nonspecific protein adsorption, especially those PAA brushes with a high surface graft density. Although the probe binding capacity can be raised as a function of the graft density of the PAA brushes or the amount of carboxyl groups along the PAA chains, the accessibility of the target analyte to the immobilized probe was limited at the high graft density of the PAA brushes. The effect was far more apparent for the BSA-anti-BSA probe-analyte pair than for the much smaller biotin-SA probe-analyte pair. The impact of the swellability of the PAA brushes, as tailored by the degree of carboxyl group activation, on both the sensing probe immobilization and analyte detection was also addressed. This investigation demonstrated that PAA brushes having a defined graft density have a promising potential as a precursor layer for biosensing applications.  相似文献

Direct radiation graft polymerization of acrylic acid onto oriented poly(ethylene terephthalate) films and fibers subjected to thermal treatment and treated with structure-active solvents, such as dichloroethane and dioxane, was studied. Based on the results of thermomechanical analysis, X-ray diffraction, sorption, and acrylic acid grafting, conclusions were drawn concerning the character of structural changes in poly(ethylene terephthalate) exposed to structure-active solvents. The physicochemical properties of the graft copolymers obtained were examined, including the resistance against γ-radiation.  相似文献

Noncharged pyrene molecules were incorporated into multilayer films by first loading pyrene into poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)-stabilized cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles (noted as PAA&(Py@CTAB)) and then layer-by-layer (LbL) assembled with poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA). The stable incorporation of pyrene into multilayer films was confirmed by quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) measurements and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The resultant PAA&(Py@CTAB)/PDDA multilayer films show an exponential growth behavior because of the increased surface roughness with increasing number of film deposition cycles. The present study will open a general and cost-effective avenue for the incorporation of noncharged species, such as organic molecules, nanoparticles, and so forth, into LbL-assembled multilayer films by using polyelectrolyte-stabilized surfactant micelles as carriers.  相似文献

Polyelectrolyte multilayer films were successfully assembled from each of the three charged derivatives of chitosan; N-[(2-hydroxyl-3-trimethylammonium)propyl]chitosan chloride (HTACC), N-succinyl chitosan (SCC) and N-sulfofurfuryl chitosan (SFC), paired with one of the two oppositely charged polyelectrolytes, poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) on surface-treated poly(ethylene terephthalate) (treated PET) substrates by alternate layer-by-layer adsorption. Surface coverage and wettability of the multilayer films were determined by AFM and water contact angle measurements, respectively. Analysis by quartz crystal balance with dissipation (QCM-D) has suggested that all multilayer films are relatively rigid and have a high water content associated within their structures, accounting for up to 85-90% (w/w) for films having 7-10 layers. In vitro cytocompatibility tests for the fibroblast-like L929 cell line revealed a slight dependency for cell adhesion and proliferation on the outermost layer. The multilayer film containing HTACC exhibited moderate antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. Bearing negative charges, the multilayer films terminating with SFC and having at least 10 layers were capable of suppressing the adsorption of plasma proteins and platelet adhesion at a comparable level to the multilayer film assembled from heparin, a well-known antithrombogenic polymer.  相似文献

A novel method is described for the preparation of high-magnetization paramagnetic microparticles functionalized with a controlled density of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and carboxyl groups. These microparticles were synthesized using four steps: (1) creation of an oil-in-water emulsion in which hydrophobic iron oxide nanoparticles and a UV-activated initiator were distributed in hexane; (2) formation of uniform microparticles through emulsion homogenization and evaporation of hexane; (3) functionalization of the microparticle with a PEG-functionalized surfactant and acrylic acid; and (4) polymerization of the microparticles. Characterization of the microparticles with electron microscopy and light scattering revealed that they were composed of densely packed iron oxide nanoparticles and that the size of the microparticles may be controlled through the pore size of the membrane used to homogenize the emulsion. The concentration of surfactant and acrylic acid used in the third processing step was found to determine the surface chemistry, iron content, and magnetization of the microparticles. Increasing the PEG surfactant to acrylic acid ratio resulted in higher PEG surface densities, lower iron content, and lower magnetization. The resulting microparticles were readily functionalized with antibodies and showed a low propensity for nonspecific protein adsorption. We believe that these microparticles will be useful for magnetic tweezers measurements and bioanalytical devices that require microparticles with a high magnetization.  相似文献
