Following the accident at the nuclear reactor at Chernobyl, in the Soviet Union on April 26, 1986, we performed a variety of measurements to determine the level of the radioactive fallout on the western United States. We used gamma-spectroscopy to analyze air filters from the areas around Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), California, and Barrow and Fairbanks, Alaska. Milk from California and imported vegetables were also analyzed. The levels of the various fission products detected were far below the maximum permissable concentration levels.Work performed under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Energy by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory under contract number W-7405-ENG-48.  相似文献

Summary During the last decade the Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry assisted in the certification of 31 environmental and food reference materials issued by the BCR (Bureau of Reference Materials of the European Communities). The efforts spent can be translated into the following statistics: the 10 most frequently certified elements assisted by the Gent Laboratory are As, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Pb, Se and Zn. They cover 70% of the certification work. The Gent Laboratory cooperated in 74% of the latter. There are 21 more major and trace elements certified, some in a single product only. Activation analysis was the main analytical technique applied by the Gent Laboratory. In many instances radiochemical separations were involved.  相似文献

The Government Laboratory has been involved in the provision of analytical and advisory services since its formal establishment in 1913 in support of the needs of the community and the commitments of the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, China. One of the earliest areas of work involves the testing of food samples for maintenance of public health and food safety. Remarkable advances in technology in recent years coupled with the introduction of new policies and regulations, the launching of new international standards and requirements have all contributed to significant and ever-rising demand of accurate, specific, comparable and traceable measurements using the latest technologies for a wide variety of additives, contaminants, residues and genetically modified ingredients in food.Metrology, the science of measurement, has always played a key role in the development and validation of analytical methodologies in the Government Laboratory for the realization of its measurements to the highest level of accuracies and traceability to internationally recognized standards. Besides the application of the latest analytical technologies such as isotope dilution mass spectrometry, tandem mass spectrometry, real-time polymerase chain reactions, etc., the Analytical and Advisory Services Division of the Laboratory develops a quality assurance system in full compliance with the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025 and endeavours to ensure that every analytical methods are validated with the best applicable means and are fit for the intended purposes. In this presentation, the role and application of metrology in chemistry in the measurements pertaining to public health and food safety work undertaken by the Government Laboratory are discussed.Presented at International Symposium on Metrology in Chemistry, 2004 Beijing, China.  相似文献

Self-consistent fieldab initio calculations have been performed for CH3Br. The calculated equilibrium conformation is in good agreement with experiment. Valence and core level ionization potentials, Mulliken population analysis and electronic properties are presented. The ionization potentials are in good agreement with the experimental values, except for one case in which the experimental value may be wrongly assigned. The calculated dipole moment, 2.43 Debye, is 34% or 0.6 Debye larger than the experimental value.Two of us (C.W.B. and G. del C.) wish to acknowledge the hospitality of the IBM San José Research Laboratory and joint study agreements between the IBM and the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory and the National University of Mexico respectively.  相似文献

The author describes his work for which he coined the word 'photocrystallography', a technique which consists of using a laser to pump, or excite, a molecular crystal while the X-ray diffractometer probes its structure at the atomic level. The technique is being used to study highly reactive excited molecules that exist for just millionths or even billionths of a second using very intense light sources at the National Synchrotron Light Source at Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory.  相似文献

The use of methods of analysis capable of producing reliable analytical results is a prerequisite to the effective control of quarantine plant pathogens. Proficiency testing is considered to be one of the most reliable ways to verify and coordinate analytical results. As a French national reference laboratory in plant pathology, the Anses Plant Health Laboratory organizes proficiency tests in order to ensure that officially approved laboratories (certified by government services) are capable of producing reliable analytical results for the detection of plant pathogens. Proficiency tests in plant pathology have a number of notable features including the processing of qualitative results. This paper presents the experience of the Anses Plant Health Laboratory’s Unit for Tropical Pests and Diseases (LSV-RAPT) as an organizer of proficiency tests in plant pathology. The LSV-RAPT has gained recognition for the methodology it has developed in the form of accreditation as a proficiency testing provider according to the ISO/IEC 17043. The methodology can be applied to many other disciplines that use qualitative detection methods.  相似文献

The standard ISO 15189 requires a systematic review of results of clinical laboratory examinations, but it does not provide details on how to carry out such a review. In this article, the Catalan Association of Clinical Laboratory Sciences proposes a guide for this review of patients’ clinical laboratory results pertaining to rational or difference scales (‘quantitative values’). The review process is based on the so-called plausibility control, which may be defined as the set of procedures used to decide if a measurement result is valid or not according to established clinical and biological criteria, considering four variables: (1) alert limits; (2) consistency with the previous result, if any; (3) consistency with other results obtained from the same sample, if any; and (4) consistency with the diagnosis (presumed or confirmed) or, when it is not known, the origin of the request, though these last criteria are generally very weak and the derived decisions may be scantly reliable. This guide has been prepared on the behalf of the Technical Committee of the Catalan Association for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. We have begun a program of updates to the instruments used by the Radiation Measurements Laboratory at the Idaho National Laboratory. This laboratory supports the Advanced Test Reactor as well as many other programs throughout the INL. The first step in this upgrade is the updating of the gamma-ray spectrometry systems. Currently, these gamma-ray spectrometers use a standard spectroscopy amplifier and a pulser-based ADC. We have performed a series of tests to determine if a digital-signal processor-based system can replace these analog electronics, with little to no loss in performance.  相似文献
