Spectral measurements of the solar ultraviolet spectrum have been made at Reading, England, since July 1989. The data presented show the daily and annual changes in the ultraviolet-B (UV-B) part of the spectrum, and illustrate the dominance of the longer wavelengths in grouping the data into a single broadband measurement. The temporal changes (diurnal and annual) cover 2 orders of magnitude at 300 nm, and a factor of 5 at 320 nm. In a single statement of UV-B levels the trend at longer wavelengths predominates, hiding the larger differences at the more biologically important wavelengths. However, the data also show that at mid-high latitudes the UV irradiance at noon in winter is less than that received at any time during the middle 12 h of daylight in summer, and this should be acknowledged when assessing the consequences of ozone depletion. Atmospheric scattering of short wavelength radiation is compared to that of the entire solar spectrum from measurements of diffuse radiation: on a clear day70–100% of UV-B was diffuse in Reading, with a slight wavelength dependency increasing diffuse radiation at short wavelengths. Under the same conditions scattering of total solar radiation was 21%. The effect of cloud cover is briefly discussed for two specific cases of complete, uniform cloud cover, when attenuation by clouds was approx. 40 and 68%, with little wavelength dependence in either case.  相似文献

We examined ultraviolet radiation (UVR)-induced DNA damage in marine micro-organisms collected from surface seawater along a latitudinal transect in the Central Pacific Ocean from 70°N to 68°S. Samples were collected predawn and incubated under ambient UVR in transparent incubators at in situ temperatures until late afternoon at which time they were filtered into primarily bacterioplankton and eukaryotic fractions. Cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs) and (6-4) photoproducts [(6-4)PDs] were quantified in DNA extracts using radioimmunoassays. UVB was lowest in the polar regions and highest near the equator and correlations between UVB and DNA damage were observed. The eukaryotic fraction showed significant CPDs across the entire transect; (6-4)PDs were detected only in the tropics. The bacterial fraction showed no accumulation of (6-4)PDs at any latitude, although residual (6-4)PDs were observed. Bacterial cell volumes were greatest in the sub-Arctic and northern temperate latitudes and lower in the tropics and southern hemisphere, a unique observation that parallels Bergmann's rule. A strong negative correlation was observed between cell volume and CPDs. The environmental impact of solar UVR on marine micro-organisms in the open ocean is complex and our results suggest that several factors such as DNA repair, cell size, temperature, salinity, nutrients and species composition are important in determining relative sensitivity.  相似文献

Measurements made with polysulphone film of solar ultraviolet radiation at Jeddah show that over the year the highest doses are received at low angles of inclination. However, it is also shown that the weathering of polyacetal, which has been demonstrated to be proportional to ultraviolet dose, increases with angle of exposure at Jeddah. An explanation is put forward to account for this apparent contradiction based on the errosive action of wind blown sand.  相似文献

We examined the response of pico-phytoplankton communities sampled at the equatorial, tropical and temperate Central Atlantic Ocean to subsurface underwater solar radiation in order to test the generality of the reported cell mortality for these populations when exposed to high ultra violet radiation (UVR) and photosynthetically active radiation. The natural communities of pico-phytoplankton populations tested experienced high cell mortality when exposed to high solar radiation, despite inhabiting tropical waters. Synechococcus and eukaryotes were more resistant to solar radiation than Prochlorococcus. The decay rates of all pico-phytoplankton groups examined tended to be much higher when exposed to total solar radiation than when UVB-R was filtered out. We also show that even short exposures of 30 min to high solar radiation were able to induce cell mortality in Prochlorococcus. The variability in the decay rates of living Prochlorococcus cells were strongly related to the condition of the original population. However, Synechococcus decay rates were higher in populations from the tropical area, with eukaryotes sensitivity increasing with increasing the trophic degree. The data reported in this study and in the literature revealed contrasting capacities of Prochlorococcus, Synechococcus and eukaryotes to survive under high solar radiation. Although the mechanisms involved are as yet unclear, their elucidation may help explain niche partitioning among these organisms in the ocean.  相似文献

Aspects of different calibration procedures for erythemally weighing broadband radiometers are presented in this study. These instruments are common in projects dealing with ultraviolet radiation effects on humans. Many erythemally weighing broadband radiometers are still operated using a single calibration factor (cf) that is provided with the instrument. The individual characteristics of every instrument are strongly dependent on the total ozone amount and the solar elevation. Therefore, a calibration procedure also has to take into account the ozone concentrations and the solar elevation to compensate for the effects of the individual characteristics and to provide comparable measurements. Given the variation of the ozone concentrations and the solar elevation, an individual cf has to be calculated for every measurement. Using a simplified version of the calibration procedure, which is presented in this study, can lessen this effort. Taking into account the relevant meteorological conditions for a measuring site, a single cf is calculated to compensate the individual characteristics of the instruments and therefore deliver comparable measurements with less effort.  相似文献

Abstract Quantifying individual exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is critical to understanding the etiology of a number of diseases including nonmelanotic and melanotic skin cancers. Measurements of personal exposure to solar UVR were made in Hobart, Tasmania in February (summer) 1991 for six different outdoor activities using UVR-sensitive polysulfone (PS) film attached at seven anatomical sites. Concurrent behavioral and environmental observations were also made. To date many studies have relied on subject recall to quantify past solar UVR exposures. To gain insight into the accuracy of subject recall the measured UVR exposures received by different subjects using the PS film were compared to those calculated from personal diaries and ambient solar UVB levels from a monitoring station. In general, when UVR exposure activities took place under close supervision, good correlations were obtained between the PS badges and the ambient measurements/diaries approach. Ultraviolet radiation exposures for the field study involving 94 subjects engaged in a number of outdoor activities are presented.  相似文献

The effect of cloud cover on the amount of solar UV radiation that reaches pedestrians under tree cover was evaluated with a three-dimensional canopy radiation transport model. The spatial distribution of UVB irradiance at the base of a regular array of spherical tree crowns was modeled under the full range of sky conditions. The spatial mean relative irradiance (I), and erythemal irradiance of the entire below-canopy domain and the spatial mean relative irradiance and erythemal irradiance in the shaded regions of the domain were determined for solar zenith angles from 15° to 60°. The erythemal UV irradiance under skies with 50% or less cloud cover was not remarkably different from that under clear skies. In the shade, the actual irradiance was greater under partly cloudy than under clear skies. The mean ultraviolet protection factor for tree canopies under skies with 50% or less cloud cover was nearly equivalent to that for clear sky days. Regression equations of spatially averaged Ir . as a function of cloud cover fraction, solar zenith angle and canopy cover were used to predict the variation in erythemal irradiance in different land uses across Baltimore, MD.  相似文献

Abstract— Data are presented from 14 sites where continuous measurements of the sun's shortest ultraviolet radiation reaching the earth's surface have been made for four or more years. Average daily dose per month and its variability from year to year is shown for each station. Some of the many influences affecting these measurements can be discerned by station intercomparisons. OZONE DEPLETION AND INCREASE IN ANNUAL CARCINOGENIC ULTRAVIOLET DOSE   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
An increase in skin cancer incidence due to an increase of solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation is one of the best quantitated effects of stratospheric ozone depletion. Until now, estimates of effective UV dosages could not be based on spectral data on carcinogenicity. Instead the spectral dependence of sunburn or mutations was used. These data contained little information on longwave ultraviolet radiation (UVA: 315-380 nm). Recently, in hairless mice, experimental data have become available on the carcinogenic effectiveness of the ultraviolet, including UVA. From these new data we can estimate the effect of ozone depletion on the ambient annual carcinogenic UV dose. We find that a 1% decrease in ozone yields a 1.56% increase in annual carcinogenic UV; this value is not strongly dependent on geographical latitude. From this result, combined with the dose-response relationship for UV carcinogenesis, we conclude that for a 1% decrease in total column atmospheric ozone an increase of 2.7% in non-melanoma skin cancer is to be expected.  相似文献

An analysis is made of experimental ultraviolet erythemal solar radiation data measured during the years 2000 and 2001 by the Spanish UV-B radiation evaluation and prediction network. This network consists of 16 Robertson-Berger type pyranometers for evaluating solar erythemal radiation and five Brewer spectroradiometers for evaluating the stratospheric ozone. On the basis of these data the Ultraviolet Index (UVI) was evaluated for the measuring stations that are located either in coastal regions or in the more densely populated regions inland on the Iberian Peninsula. It has been checked that in most cases the maximum irradiance values corresponded to solar noon, although there were exceptions that could be explained by cloudiness. The maximum experimental values of the UVI were around 9 during the summer, though frequently passing this value at the inland measurement stations. The annual accumulated dose of irradiation on a horizontal plane has also been studied, as well as the evolution through the year in units of energy, standard erythemal doses and minimum erythemal doses, according to different phototypes.  相似文献

Because of its accessibility the human skin is constantly exposed to solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation. It is increasingly appreciated that exposure of the mammalian skin to UV plays a causal and decisive role in acute and chronic skin damage including the development of skin cancer. UV exposure causes sunburn, pigmentation, hyperplasia, immunosuppression, DNA damage, photoaging and photocarcinogenesis. To cope with constant environmental damage the skin possesses elaborate enzymatic detoxification systems. This paper briefly focuses on the effect of solar radiation, particularly UV spectrum, on detoxification pathways in the skin. Specifically the effect of solar radiation on cytochrome P450, glutathione, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase, glutathione-S-transferase and ceruloplasmin has been discussed.  相似文献

Abstract— A quantitative analysis of the wavelength-dependent influence of solar irradiance on natural phytoplankton photosynthesis has been made. The effect on productivity due to several different UV radiation regimes has been measured. In the course of this analysis, it has been shown that the biological weighting function for photoinhibition of chloroplasts (Jones and Kok, 1966) allows the calculation of a biologically effective dose which is consistent with the measured photoinhibition in natural phytoplankton populations. The ecological implications of a change in available UV radiation, possibly due to anthropogenic altering of the ozone layer, are explored and it is found that the present static bottle l4C technique of measuring in situ phytoplankton productivity does not lend itself to assessing accurately the potential ecological consequences of possible increased MUV (middle ultraviolet radiation in the 280–340 nm region) on phytoplankton populations. A small change in MUV has a relatively minor effect on photoinhibition dose rates whereas it has a large potential effect on DNA dose rates.  相似文献

A network of solar carcinogenic/erythemal ultraviolet radiometers has been established in New Zealand. Daily integrated irradiances of this biologically harmful ultraviolet radiation for 1989, 1990 and 1991 are reported from radiometers located at Wellington (41°S) and Christchurch (43.5°S) and for 1990 and 1991 from the Auckland (37°S) radiometer. Although the monitoring program has not been running sufficiently long to discern any long-term changes in levels of solar ultraviolet radiation, shorter term trends are apparent, which are attributed to a seasonal cycle in levels of ozone at midlatitudes and changes in atmospheric aerosols.  相似文献

Abstract— An attempt has been made to calculate the rate of ultraviolet absorption by 7-dehydrocholes-terol. provitamin D3, in the epidermis as a function of latitude, season and skin type, in the hope that it will provide an upper-limit estimate of the epidermal vitamin production. The results indicate that a significant fraction of the total epidermal production may occur in the stratum corneum with figures of 15 and 31% being found for non-pigmented and pigmented epidermises, respectively. Total production in negroid epidermis is predicted to be about 40% of that in the Caucasian one and the latitudinal variation is greater than the seasonal variation, in agreement with the behaviour of the available solar ultraviolet. Overall production rates are sufficiently high for it to be unnecessary to invoke an enhanced absorption mechanism for the provitamin, although the results do indicate that there may be a risk of deficient production above about 40oN.  相似文献

A spectrum evaluator based on four different dosimeter materials has been employed to estimate the spectral irradiances of solar radiation for exposed humans. The result is used to calculate the biologically effective irradiance using the erythemal action spectrum and a fish melanoma action spectrum. Measurements are made in winter at a sub-tropical site on the chest and shoulder of subjects during normal daily activities. Up to 95% of the total UV exposure received is in the UV-A waveband (320-400 nm). The UV-A waveband is found to contribute approximately 14% of the erythemal UV and 93% of the biologically effective UV for fish melanoma. Extrapolation to humans suggests that exposure to the UV-A band will contribute to photodamage in human skin during exposure to solar radiation.  相似文献

The horizontal photon flux density of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and flux density of ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation were measured in the vicinity of isolated single trees during the summer of 1996. Measurements were made under shade and sunlit conditions along a transect aligned with the solar disk and the tree trunk. Flux density measurements were normalized by the flux density at a reference location away from the tree. Results showed (1) a more rapid decline in the flux density of UVA and UVB radiation than PAR with decreasing distance to the tree trunk on both the sunlit and shaded side of a tree and (2) more rapid changes in the flux density of UVB radiation UVA radiation, and PAR with distance from the tree on the sunlit side of the tree than the shaded side of the tree. The UVB/PAR ratio was found to increase in the shadow of a tree with increasing distance from the tree to between 4 and 6 for the conditions of the study. The potential for detrimental effects by UVB flux density under conditions of the high ratio may be mitigated by sunflecks at a given location over the course of a day.  相似文献

Current shading strategies used to protect outdoor playgrounds from harmful solar radiation include the placement of artificial cloth weaves or permanent roofing over a playground site, planting trees in proximity to playground equipment, and using vegetation or surface texture variations to cool playground surfaces. How and where an artificial shade structure is placed or a tree is planted to maximize the shade protection over specific playground areas, requires careful assessment of local seasonal sun exposure patterns. The Playground Shade Index (PSI) is introduced here as a design metric to enable shade and solar ultraviolet exposure patterns to be derived in an outdoor space using conventional aerial views of suburban park maps. The implementation of the PSI is demonstrated by incorporating a machine learning design tool to classify the position of trees from an aerial image, thus enabling the mapping of seasonal shade and ultraviolet exposure patterns within an existing 7180 m2 parkland. This is achieved by modeling the relative position of the sun with respect to nearby buildings, shade structures, and the identified evergreen and deciduous tree species surrounding an outdoor playground.  相似文献

Abstract— On a percentage basis, ozone is a very minor component of the atmosphere; at STP it would make a layer only about 2 mm thick. On almost every other basis (biological, meteorological, paleontological, photochemical, etc.) it is a major component, due mainly to the tremendous reduction in solar ultraviolet flux which it causes in the 220–290 nm region. Since no data are available for Λ < 285 nm, a rational basis for estimating the flux reaching the earth's surface in this region is discussed. Variations in ozone concentration are of great importance, and it is possible to have more radiation with Λ < 270 nm fall on a surface in one extreme day than in several years of typical days. Often, persons involved in studies of polymer degradation by sunlight mention that a negligible fraction (1 ppm) of the radiant flux reaching the earth's surface is associated with wavelengths below 290 nm and infer that studies at shorter wavelengths will not be of much practical value. Such inferences are questionable for at least two reasons. (1) The quantum flux density below 290 nm is about 1016 photons cm-2 month-1, so that considerable long-term damage is possible since most of the flux will be absorbed in a layer only a few microns thick. (2) Even if solar radiation below 290 nm were completely absent, the existence of correlations between absorption peaks in the near ultraviolet and visible, and in the infrared with ionization potentials typically 6–12 eV or 200-100 nm) is evidence that we may expect studies in the ultraviolet and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) to provide important clues to the problem of improving the resistance of polymers to sunlight.  相似文献

Terrestrial solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation has significant implications for human health and increasing levels are a key concern regarding the impact of climate change. Monitoring solar UV radiation at the earth's surface is therefore of increasing importance. A new prototype portable CCD (charge‐coupled device) spectrometer‐based system has been developed that monitors UV radiation (280–400 nm) levels at the earth's surface. It has the ability to deliver this information to the public in real time. Since the instrument can operate autonomously, it is called the Autonomous Portable Solar Ultraviolet Spectroradiometer (APSUS). This instrument incorporates an Ocean Optics QE65000 spectrometer which is contained within a robust environmental housing. The APSUS system can gather reliable solar UV spectral data from approximately April to October inclusive (depending on ambient temperature) in the UK. In this study the new APSUS unit and APSUS system are presented. Example solar UV spectra and diurnal UV Index values as measured by the APSUS system in London and Weymouth in the UK in summer 2012 are shown.  相似文献

An interaction mechanism for a bisphenol‐A‐based polybenzoxazine resin exposed to ultraviolet radiation is proposed. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicated that a carbonyl‐containing species was formed when cured 6,6′‐bis(2,3‐dihydro‐3‐methyl‐4H‐1,3‐benzoxazinyl)isopropylidene (BA‐m) resin was exposed to ultraviolet radiation (λ > 290 nm) in the presence of ambient air at room temperature. The isopropylidene linkage was the reactive site of cleavage and oxidation. It was apparent from model compound studies that this structure was severed, resulting in the formation of a 2,6‐disubstituted benzoquinone. Model compound studies also demonstrated that the BA‐m polymer backbone structure, the Mannich bridge, which was present in and characterized all the polybenzoxazines, neither cleaved nor oxidized in the presence of ultraviolet radiation in a detectable manner under the conditions of this study. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
