The concept of QCD sum rules is extended to bound states composed of particles with finite mass such as scalar quarks or strange quarks. It turns out that mass corrections become important in this context. The number of relevant corrections is analyzed in a systematic discussion of the IR- and UV-divergencies, leading in general to a finite number of corrections. The results are demonstrated for a system of two massless quarks and two heavy scalar quarks. We wish to thank Dr. Lech Mankiewicz for very helpful discussions. This work was supported by DFG (G. In this note we discuss possible separations of exact, massive, tree-level spin amplitudes into gauge-invariant parts. We concentrate our attention on processes involving two quarks entering a color-neutral current and, thanks to the QCD interactions, two extra external gluons. We will search for forms compatible with parton-shower languages, without applying approximations or restrictions on phase space regions. Special emphasis will be put on the isolation of parts necessary for the construction of evolution kernels for individual splittings and to some degree for the running coupling constant as well. Our aim is to better understand the environment necessary to optimally match hard matrix elements with parton-shower algorithms. To avoid complications and ambiguities related to regularization schemes, we ignore, at this point, virtual corrections. Our representation is quite universal: any color-neutral current can be used; in particular, our approach is not restricted to vector currents only. The apparent universality of jet quenching observed in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC for light and heavy quarks, as well as for quarks and gluons, is very puzzling and calls for a theoretical explanation. Recently, it has been proposed that synchrotron-like radiation at strong coupling gives rise to a universal bound on the energy of a parton escaping from the medium. Since this bound appears to be quite low, almost all of the observed particles at high transverse momentum have to originate from the surface of the hot fireball. Here I make a first attempt of checking this scenario against the RHIC data and formulate a “universal-bound model” of jet quenching that can be further tested at RHIC and LHC.  相似文献

Because of the equal strength of the pairing potential mediated by one-gluon exchange for all partial waves to the leading order QCD running coupling constant and the nonlinearity of the gap equation, the non-spherical pairing in single flavor color superconductivity (CSC) cannot be restricted in a single non-s-wave channel and the mixing among different angular momenta will occur. In this paper, we examine the angular momentum mixing in single flavor CSC of massless quarks with transverse pairing, in which the pairing quarks have opposite helicity. We find that the free energy of all non-spherical pairing states are lowered by angular momentum mixing compared with that contain p-wave only, though the amount of the free energy drop is numerically small. Consequently the most stable pairing state in the ultra-relativistic limit remains the spherical color-spin-locked state (CSL).  相似文献

Leptons, quarks and gauge bosons are assumed to be pointlike particles in the Standard Model. Stringent bounds on the radii of quarks and leptons and their weak anomalous magnetic moments can be derived from the high-precision measurements at LEP and SLC. We find a model-independent bound ofR?10?17 cm for quark and lepton radii. HERA will provide complementary information on the electromagnetic static properties of the quarks and the parameters of the charged quark currents.  相似文献

We discuss one of the most prominent features of the very recent preliminary elliptic flow data of J/ψ-mesons from the PHENIX Collaboration (PHENIX Collaboration (C. Silvestre), arXiv:0806.0475 [nucl-ex]). Even within the rather large error bars of the measured data a negative elliptic flow parameter (v2) for J/ψ in the range of p T = 0.5-2.5 GeV/c is visible. We argue that this negative elliptic flow at intermediate pT is a clear and qualitative signature for the collectivity of charm quarks produced in nucleus-nucleus reactions at RHIC. Within a parton recombination approach we show that a negative elliptic flow puts a lower limit on the collective transverse velocity of heavy quarks. The numerical value of the transverse flow velocity for charm quarks that is necessary to reproduce the data is (charm) ∼ 0.55-0.6c and therefore compatible with the flow of light quarks.  相似文献

The MILC Collaboration has been performing realistic simulations of full QCD with 2 + 1 flavors of improved staggered quarks. Our simulations allow for controlled continuum and chiral extrapolations. I present results for the light pseudoscalar sector: masses and decay constants, quark masses and Gasser-Leutwyler low-energy constants. In addition I will present some results for heavy-light mesons, decay constants and semileptonic form factors, obtained in collaboration with the HPQCD and Fermilab lattice Collaborations. Such calculations will help in the extraction of CKM matrix elements from experimental measurements.  相似文献

A promising probe to study deconfined matter created in high energy nuclear collisions is the energy loss of (heavy) quarks. Experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) have shown that heavy quarks, i.e. charm and bottom quarks show a remarkable high momentum suppression, comparable to light quarks. In this exploratory study we investigate the energy loss of heavy quarks in high multiplicity proton proton collisions at LHC energies. We will find a small, however non-negligible energy loss of high momentum charm quarks.  相似文献

In the context of 331 models we analyze the phenomenology of exotic T quarks with electric charge 2/3. We establish bounds for the corresponding masses and mixing angles and study the decay modes TbW, tZ and qH. It is found that the decays into scalars are strongly dependent on the model parameters and can be the dominant ones in a scenario with approximate flavor symmetry.

Charm quark energy loss in QCD matter   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The energy loss of heavy quarks in a quark-gluon plasma of finite size is studied within the light-cone path integral approach. A simple analytical formulation of the radiative energy loss of heavy quarks is derived. This provides a convenient way to quantitatively estimate the quark energy loss. Our results show that if the energy of a heavy quark is much larger than its mass, the radiative energy loss approaches the radiative energy loss of light quarks.  相似文献

Transverse target single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering allow to study the so-called Collins and Sivers mechanisms. The first one connects the poorly known fundamental transversity distribution function, describing the transverse spin-polarization of quarks in a transversely polarized proton, to the Collins fragmentation function, describing spin-orbit correlations in the hadron formation process. The second one is sensitive to the Sivers function, which correlates the intrinsic transverse momentum of quarks with the proton’s spin orientation and is related to the orbital angular momentum of quarks. Preliminary results on azimuthal single target-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive electro-production of pions and kaons at the HERMES experiment are presented. The full data set collected with a transversely polarized hydrogen target was analyzed providing the HERMES most precise results on the Collins and Sivers azimuthal moments. LHC is expected to be a top quark factory. If the fundamental Planck scale is near a TeV, then we also expect the top quarks to be produced from black holes via Hawking radiation. In this Letter we calculate the cross sections for top quark production from black holes at the LHC and compare it with the direct top quark cross section via parton fusion processes at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). We find that the top quark production from black holes can be larger or smaller than the pQCD predictions at NNLO depending upon the Planck mass and black hole mass. Hence the observation of very high rates for massive particle production (top quarks, Higgs or supersymmetry) at the LHC may be an useful signature for black hole production.  相似文献

Decay modes and lifetimes of quarks, vector mesons and protons are determined for the unified model of leptons and hadrons recently proposed by Pati and Salam. It is found that while both the quarks and gauge mesons decay too rapidly to be observed, protons will be comfortably stable against decay into leptons, consistent with earlier estimates and existing experimental evidence. It is of special interest that while quarks may not be directly observable, their presence may be verified owing to the uniqueness of their preferred decay into quite a large number of pions. We also discuss an anomalous lepton-hadron scattering process whose occurrence would imply the presence of exotic SU(4) gluons carrying both baryon and lepton number.  相似文献

Using the Schwinger-Dyson equation and perturbation theory, we calculate the two-quark condensates for the light quarks u, d, strange quark s and a heavy quark c with their current masses respectively. The results show that the two-quark condensate will decrease when the quark mass increases, which hints the chiral symmetry may be restored for the heavy quarks.  相似文献

In the standard model, the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, which incorporates the time-reversal violation shown by the charged current weak interactions, originates from the Higgs-quark interactions. The Yukawa interactions of quarks with the physical Higgs particle can contain further complex phase factors, but nevertheless conserveT, as shown by constructing the fermionT transformation and the invariant Euclidean fermion measure.  相似文献

Meson hyperfine splittings give empirical evidence that the short-ranged part of the potential binding quarks has the behavior expected of single color gluon exchange in an asymptotically free theory. Since the interaction of light confined quarks depends on only one length scale, while that of heavy confined quarks depends on two length scales, it is argued that the spin-dependent interactions are qualitatively different in the cases. Phenomenological evidence suggests that the spin-dependent interactions of light quarks are short-ranged only, while that of heavy quarks are predominantly long-ranged. It is proposed that a measurement of the F1-F mass-difference will help clarify the nature of a possible long-ranged spin-spin interaction of strange quarks.  相似文献

We study the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with light and heavy quarks in a relativistic approach. We emphasize relevant regularization issues as well as the transition from light to heavy quarks. The approach of the electromagnetic meson form factor to the Isgur-Wise function in the heavy-quark limit is also discussed.  相似文献

We check a commonly used approximation in which a baryon with a heavy quark is described as a heavy quark–light diquark system. The heavy quark influences the diquark internal motion reducing the average distance between the two light quarks. Besides, we show how the average distance between the heavy quark and any of the light quarks, and that between the heavy quark and the center of mass of the light diquark, are smaller than the distance between the two light quarks, which seems to contradict the heavy quark–light diquark picture. This latter result is in agreement with expectations from QCD sum rules and lattice QCD calculations. Our results also show that the diquark approximations produces larger masses than the ones obtained in a full calculation.  相似文献
