The polarities of a wide range of ionic liquids have been determined using the Kamlet-Taft empirical polarity scales α, β and π*, with the dye set Reichardt's Dye, N,N-diethyl-4-nitroaniline and 4-nitroaniline. These have been compared to measurements of these parameters with different dye sets and to different polarity scales. The results emphasise the importance of recognising the role that the nature of the solute plays in determining these scales. It is particularly noted that polarity scales based upon charged solutes can give very different values for the polarity of ionic liquids compared to those based upon neutral probes. Finally, the effects of commonplace impurities in ionic liquids are reported.  相似文献

A novel solvatochromic betaine dye has been synthesized from xanthosine and characterized spectroscopically by UV-vis in a broad range of solvents. The dye 9-(2',3',5'-tri-O-acetyl-beta-d-ribofuranosyl)-2-(pyridinium-1-yl)-9H-purin-6-olate, 1a, exhibits solvent-induced spectral band shifts that are (2)/(3) as large as that of the betaine known as Reichardt's dye, which forms the basis of the E(T)(30) solvent polarity scale. Moreover, the dye 1a is a ribonucleoside and hence has the potential application as a polarity probe for application in RNA oligonucleotides. The isomeric dye 6-(pyridinium-1)-yl-9H-purin-2-olate, 2a, has also been synthesized and exhibits slightly smaller solvatochromic band shifts. The new betaine dyes have also been studied by comparing the experimental and calculated solvatochromic shifts based on the calculation of the UV/vis absorption spectra, using a combination of methods with density functional theory (DFT). The COSMO continuum dielectric method, an applied electric field term in the Hamiltonian, and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods were used to obtain absorption energies, ground-state dipole moments, and the difference dipole moment between the ground and excited states. The calculations predict a lower energy absorption band of charge-transfer character that is highly solvatochromic, and a higher energy absorption band that has pi-pi character which is not solvatochromic, in agreement with the experimental data. For Reichardt's dye the difference dipole moment between the ground and excited state (Deltamu = mu(e) - mu(g)) was also calculated and compared to experiment: Deltamu(calcd) = -6 D and Deltamu(exptl) = -9 +/- 1 D.(1) The ground-state dipole moment was found to be mu(g)(calcd) = 18 D and mu(g)(exptl) = 14.8 +/- 1.2 D.(1).  相似文献

Owing to their ability to monitor pH in a precise and rapid manner, optical probes have widely been developed for biological and nonbiological applications. The strategies thus far employed to determine pH rely on two types of processes including reversible protonation of amine nitrogen atoms and deprotonation of phenols. We have developed a novel dual, colorimetric/fluorescence system for determining the pH of a solution. This system utilizes an o‐hydroxymerocyanine dye that undergoes a nucleophilic addition reaction that subsequently causes reversible structural changes interconverting a merocyanine to a spirocyanine and a spirocyanine to a spiropyran. It was demonstrated that the dye can be employed to measure the pH of solutions in the 2.5–5.75 and 9.6–11.8 ranges with color changes from yellow to dark blue and then to lavender. Moreover, the fluorescence response associated with the spirocyanine–spiropyran transformation of the dye occurring in alkaline solutions provides a precise method.  相似文献

The molar transition energy (E(T)) polarity values for the dye 4-[4-(dimethylamino)styryl]-1-methylpyridinium iodide were collected in binary mixtures comprising a hydrogen-bond accepting (HBA) solvent (acetone, acetonitrile, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF)) and a hydrogen-bond donating (HBD) solvent (water, methanol, ethanol, propan-2-ol, and butan-1-ol). Data referring to mixtures of water with alcohols were also analyzed. These data were used in the study of the preferential solvation of the probe, in terms of both solute-solvent and solvent-solvent interactions. These latter interactions are of importance in explaining the synergistic behavior observed for many mixed solvent systems. All data were successfully fitted to a model based on solvent-exchange equilibria. The E(T) values of the dye dissolved in the solvents show that the position of the solvatochromic absorption band of the dye is dependent on the medium polarity. The solvation of the dye in HBA solvents occurs with a very important contribution from ion-dipole interactions. In HBD solvents, the hydrogen bonding between the dimethylamino group in the dye and the OH group in the solvent plays an important role in the solvation of the dye. The interaction of the hydroxylic solvent with the other component in the mixture can lead to the formation of hydrogen-bonded complexes, which solvate the dye using a lower polar moiety, i.e. alkyl groups in the solvents. The dye has a hydrophobic nature and a dimethylamino group with a minor capability for hydrogen bonding with the medium in comparison with the phenolate group present in Reichardt's pyridiniophenolate. Thus, the probe is able to detect solvent-solvent interactions, which are implicit to the observed synergistic behavior.  相似文献

Experimental results on various photophysical properties of coumarin‐30 (C30) dye, namely, Stokes' shift (Δv), fluorescence quantum yield (τf), fluorescence lifetime (τf), radiative rate constant (kf) and nonradiative rate constant (knr), as obtained using absorption and fluorescence measurements have been reported. Though in most of the solvents the properties of C30 show more or less linear correlation with the solvent polarity function, Δf= [(ε ‐ 1)/(2ε+ 1) ‐ (n2 ‐ 1)/ (2n2+ l)], they show unusual deviations in nonpolar solvents at one end and in high‐polarity protic solvents at the other end. From the solvent polarity and temperature effect on the photophysical properties of the dye, following inferences have been drawn: ( 1 ) in nonpolar solvents, the dye exists in a nonpolar structure, where its 7‐NEt2 substituent adopts a pyramidal configuration and the amino lone pair is out of resonance with the benzopyrone π cloud; ( 2 ) in medium to higher polarity solvents, the dye exists in a polar intra‐molecular charge transfer structure, where the 7‐NEt2 group and the 1,2‐benzopyrone moiety are in the same plane and the amino lone pair is in resonance with the benzopyrone π cloud; ( 3 ) in protic solvents, the dye‐solvent intermolecular hydrogen bonding influences the photophysical properties of the dye; and ( 4 ) in high‐polarity protic solvents, the excited C30 undergoes a new activation‐controlled nonradiative deexcitation process because of the involvement of a twisted intra‐molecular charge transfer (TICT) state. Contrary to most other TICT molecules, the activation barrier for this deexcitation process in C30 is observed to increase with solvent polarity. A rational for this unusual behavior has been given on the basis of the solvent polarity‐dependent stabilization and crossing of relevant electronic states and the relative propensity of interconversion among these states.  相似文献

Room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are useful in many chemical applications. Recent publications have attempted to determine the polarity of RTILs using empirical solvent polarity scales. The results have indicated that most RTILs have similar polarities. Nevertheless, RTILs are capable of behaving quite differently when used as solvents in organic synthesis, matrixes in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry, liquid-liquid extraction, and as stationary phases in gas chromatography. The work presented in this study uses a linear free energy approach to characterize 17 RTILs on the basis of their distinct multiple solvation interactions with probe solute molecules. This model provides data that can be used to help identify the interactions and properties that are important for specific chemical applications.  相似文献

Room-temperature ionic liquids (ILs) have potential for many different applications, including catalysis and synthesis. Organics are often present during IL applications; therefore, a more fundamental understanding of the interactions between IL and organics is necessary. A systematic study of the effects of organic cosolvents, cations, and anions on the solvent strength of IL/organic mixtures will allow for a greater understanding and potential for tuning of ILs for specific purposes. Solvent strength is commonly quantified using spectroscopic probes. We report the solvent strength of IL/organic mixtures using Reichardt's dyes 30 and 33, Kamlet-Taft parameters, and phenol blue. The results show that the polarity of ILs is largely unaffected by the organic cosolvent; that is, the probes are preferentially solvated by the ILs. However, more specific solvation forces, such as hydrogen bonding, can be influenced indirectly by the strength of the anion/cation interaction, giving counterintuitive results.  相似文献

Room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are liquids consisting entirely of ions, and their important properties, e.g., negligible vapor pressure, are considered to result from the ionic nature. However, we do not know how ionic the RTILs are. The ionic nature of the RTILs is defined in this study as the molar conductivity ratio (Lambda(imp)/Lambda(NMR)), calculated from the molar conductivity measured by the electrochemical impedance method (Lambda(imp)) and that estimated by use of pulse-field-gradient spin-echo NMR ionic self-diffusion coefficients and the Nernst-Einstein relation (Lambda(NMR)). This ratio is compared with solvatochromic polarity scales: anionic donor ability (Lewis basicity), E(T)(30), hydrogen bond donor acidity (alpha), and dipolarity/polarizability (pi), as well as NMR chemical shifts. The Lambda(imp)/Lambda(NMR) well illustrates the degree of cation-anion aggregation in the RTILs at equilibrium, which can be explained by the effects of anionic donor and cationic acceptor abilities for the RTILs having different anionic and cationic backbone structures with fixed counterparts, and by the inductive and dispersive forces for the various alkyl chain lengths in the cations. As a measure of the electrostatic interaction of the RTILs, the effective ionic concentration (C(eff)), which is a dominant parameter for the electrostatic forces of the RTILs, was introduced as the product of Lambda(imp)/Lambda(NMR) and the molar concentration and was compared with some physical properties, such as reported normal boiling points and distillation rates, glass transition temperature, and viscosity. A decrease in C(eff) of the RTILs is well correlated with the normal boiling point and distillation rate, whereas the liquid-state dynamics is controlled by a subtle balance between the electrostatic and other intermolecular forces.  相似文献

Dendritic molecular capsules for hydrophobic compounds   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Reichardt's dye, a highly solvatochromic dye, was encapsulated within poly (glycerol succinic acid) ([Gn]-PGLSA-OH) dendrimers to investigate the interior environment of these dendritic macromolecules. The absorption maximum for the encapsulated Reichardt's dye in water was indicative of a relatively high dielectric constant present within the dye/dendrimer complex. (1)H NMR of the encapsulated complex showed the presence of aromatic protons from Reichardt's dye along with the aliphatic protons of the dendrimer. Additionally, there were substantial changes in T(1) and T(2) times of the encapsulated dye when compared with the free dye, and (1)H NOESY spectra for the complex showed a significant number of intermolecular NOE cross-peaks. These data reveal the close through-space proximity of the dye to the dendrimer and the restricted motion of the encapsulated dye. To demonstrate the potential use of these macromolecules as drug delivery vehicles, the poorly water-soluble anticancer drug 10-hydroxycamptothecin (10HCPT) was encapsulated within a carboxylated PGLSA dendrimer ([G4]-PGLSA-COONa). Cytotoxicity assays with human breast cancer cells showed a significant reduction of cell viability, demonstrating that 10HCPT retains activity upon encapsulation.  相似文献

The behavior of C343, a common molecular probe utilized in solvation dynamics experiments, was studied in homogeneous media and in aqueous and nonaqueous reverse micelles (RMs). In homogeneous media, the Kamlet and Taft solvatochromic comparison method quantified solute-solvent interactions from the absorption and emission bands showing that the solvatochromic behavior of the dye depends not only on the polarity of the medium but also on the hydrogen-bonding properties of the solvent. Specifically, in the ground state the molecule displays a bathochromic shift with the polarity polarizability (pi) and the H-bond acceptor (beta) ability of the solvents and a hypsochromic shift with the hydrogen donor ability (alpha) of the media. The carboxylic acid group causes C343 to display greater sensitivity to the beta than to the pi polarity parameter; this sensitivity increases in the excited state, while the dependence on alpha vanishes. This demonstrates that C343 forms a stable H-bond complex with solvents with high H-bond acceptor ability (high beta) and low H-bond donor character (low alpha). Spectroscopy in nonpolar solvents reveals J-aggregate formation. With information from the Kamlet-Taft analysis, C343 was used to explore RMs composed of water or polar solvents/sodium 1,4-bis-2-ethylhexylsulfosuccinate (AOT)/isooctane using absorption, emission, and time-resolved spectroscopies. Sequestered polar solvents included ethylene glycol (EG), formamide (FA), N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), and N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA). Dissolved in the AOT RM systems at low concentration, C343 exists as a monomer, and when introduced to the RM samples in its protonated form, C343 remains protonated driving it to reside in the interface rather than the water pool. The solvathochromic behavior of the dye depends the specific polar solvent encapsulated in the RMs, revealing different types of interactions between the solvents and the surfactant. EG and water H-bond with the AOT sulfonate group destroying their bulk H-bonded structures. While water remains well segregated from the nonpolar regions, EG appears to penetrate into the oil side of the interface. In aqueous AOT RMs, C343 interacts with neither the sulfonate group nor the water, perhaps because of intramolecular H-bonding in the dye. DMF and DMA interact primarily through dipole-dipole forces, and the strong interactions with AOT sodium counterions destroy their bulk structure. FA also interacts with the Na+ counterions but retains its H-bond network present in bulk solvent. Surprisingly, FA appears to be the only polar solvent other than water forming a "polar-solvent pool" with macroscopic properties similar to the bulk.  相似文献

The solvatochromicity of established solvatochromic UV/Vis probes, which appear to be sensitive to the so-called hydrogen bond donor (HBD) property of the solvent, is analysed using the hydroxyl group density of alcoholic solvents DHBD as a physical parameter in comparison to the pKa, the chemical benchmark for acidity. Reichardt's dye B30 , Kosowers Z-indicator 1-ethyl-4-(methoxycarbonyl) pyridinium iodide ( K ), Kamlet-Tafts α, Dragos S parameter, Catalans SA scale, the cis-dicyano-bis (1,10-phenanthroline) iron II complex (Schilt's Ferrocyphen dye, Fe ) and Gutmann‘s acceptor number (AN) have been investigated. The observed dependencies of the empirical polarity parameters as a function of DHBD for several alcoholic solvent families requires a ompletely new physicochemical understanding of these established HBD parameters. Only the AN scale (or Fe ) is able to bridge the gap between global polarity and acidity, provided the values are interpreted correctly and applied accordingly.  相似文献

Photophysical studies on coumarin-7 (C7) dye in different protic solvents reveal interesting changes in the properties of the dye on increasing the solvent polarity (Deltaf; Lippert-Mataga solvent polarity parameter) beyond a critical value. Up to Deltaf approximately 0.31, the photophysical properties of the dye follow good linear correlations with Deltaf. For Deltaf > approximately 0.31, however, the photophysical properties, especially the fluorescence quantum yields (Phi(f)), fluorescence lifetimes (tau(f)) and nonradiative rate constants (k(nr)), undergo large deviations from the above linearity, suggesting an unusual enhancement in the nonradiative decay rate for the excited dye in these high polarity protic solvents. The effect of temperature on the tau(f) values of the dye has also been investigated to reveal the mechanistic details of the deexcitation mechanism for the excited dye. Studies have also been carried out in deuterated solvents to understand the role of solute-solvent hydrogen bonding interactions on the photophysical properties of the dye. Observed results suggest that the fluorescence of the dye originates from the planar intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) state in all the solvents studied and the deviations in the properties in high polarity solvents (Deltaf > approximately 0.31) arise due to the participation of a new deexcitation channel associated with the formation of a nonfluorescent twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state of the dye. Comparing present results with those of a homologous dye coumarin 30 (C30; Photochem. Photobiol., 2004, 80, 104), it is indicated that unlike in C30, the TICT state of the C7 dye does not experience any extra stability in protic solvents compared to that in aprotic solvents. This has been attributed to the presence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the NH group (in the 3-benzimidazole substituent) of the C7 dye and its carbonyl group, which renders an extra stability to the planar ICT state, making the TICT state formation relatively difficult. Qualitative potential energy diagrams have been proposed to rationalize the differences observed in the results with C7 and C30 dyes in high polarity protic solvents.  相似文献

Characterisation of liquid crystals (LCs) as solvents is needed, to obtain the polarity and solvatochromic polarity parameters of these media. Polarity parameters demonstrate the effects of LC media on the photo-physical behaviour of solute molecules in an anisotropic medium. The practical limitations in determining solvent polarity scale parameters for LCs can overcome the overlapping absorption band of LCs and solvent-sensitive standard compounds or their insolubility in LCs. In this work, we report Kamlet–Abboud–Taft polarity functions of some nematic LCs in different temperatures and phases, isotropic and anisotropic, with the solvatochromic method, using the Reichardt's dye and 2,6-diphenyl-4-(2,4,6-triphenyl-1-pyridinio)-phenolate standard probe. In addition, a new azo and coumarin dye were used as probes to obtain some solvatochromic polarity parameters. Finally, a new polarity parameter, the LC anisotropic matrix, is introduced.  相似文献

P(BMA‐co‐HEMA‐spiropyran) was synthesized by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of butyl methacrylate (BMA) and 2‐(trimethylsilyloxy)‐ethyl methacrylate (HEMA‐TMS), removal of the TMS‐protective groups, and the polymer analogous esterification of the hydroxyethyl side chains with a spiropyran containing a carboxylic acid group. UV‐induced conformational changes of the synthesized macromolecules and low‐molecular‐weight spiropyran molecules were studied. Rate constants and half‐life times of the ring closure reaction from zwitterionic merocyanine to the spiropyran species were determined in the presence and absence of mica‐dispersed particles in toluene both with the free spiropyran and the polymer‐bound spiropyran. Scanning force microscopy was used to visualize the conformation of spiropyran‐decorated single macromolecular chains and agglomerated polymer‐bound merocyanine adsorbed on mica. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A dyad bearing azobenzene and spiropyran units was synthesized and its applications in indicating the polarity and protic or aprotic properties of a solvent were explored. The spiropyran-azobenzene derivative (SPAB) can be induced to different forms in different miscellaneous solvents accompanied with different color changes and spectral characteristics at the presence of organic base DBU. In a nonpolar or low-polar solvent, SPAB exists in thermostable spiropyran form with yellow color output. While in an aprotic polar solvent, the spiropyran part isomerized to merocyanine form giving a blue color. When SPAB is subjected to a protic solvent, the alkylation reaction occurs at the oxygen generating the alkylated-SPAB with red color. This solvent-dependent property can be used for discriminating solvent type.  相似文献

A new cmc determination method based on a NIR spectroscopic technique has been developed. Comparing to other cmc determination methods, this NIR method is universal, sensitive, nonintrusive and nonadditive; namely, it can be used for the direct measurements of cmc of normal micelles as well as reversed micelles, without adding any dye or fluorescent probe. cmc values of various surfactants including CTAB, SDS, Triton X-100, Brij-35, Brij-700, Tween-20, SB-12, SB3-10 determined by this method agree very well with those determined by other methods. Additionally, the method can be used for the sensitive and direct determination of cmc values of various nonionic surfactants in room-temperature ionic liquids including [BMIm](+)[PF(6)](-) and [EMIm](+)[Tf(2)N](-). The preliminary results presented here clearly demonstrate that it is possible to use the NIR technique not only to characterize aggregation of surfactants in RTILs but also to determine kinetics and to identify products of reactions in RTILs as well as in microreactors provided by micelles in the RTILs.  相似文献

Amphiphilic pyrene/perylene bis-chromophore dyes were synthesized from unsymmetrically substituted perylene bisimide dyes, which were obtained through three synthetic methods. The optical and aggregation behaviors of these functional dyes were studied by means of UV/Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and TEM. These dyes are highly fluorescent and cover the whole visible-light region. A donor/acceptor dye displays intramolecular fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), with a high efficiency of up to 96.4 % from pyrene to perylene bisimide chromophores, which leads to a high fluorescence color sensitivity to environmental polarity. Under a λ=365 nm UV lamp, the light-emitting colors of the donor/acceptor dye change from green to yellow with increasing solvent polarity, which demonstrates application potential as a new class of FERT probes. The donor/acceptor dye in water was assembled into hollow vesicles with a narrow size distribution. The bilayer structure of the vesicular wall was directly observed by means of TEM. These vesicular aggregates in water are fluorescent at λ=650–850 nm within the near-infrared region.  相似文献
