Thermal properties of benzoic acids carrying one or two semiperfluorinated alkoxy tails on the aromatic core have been investigated in binary mixtures with the non-liquid crystalline bidirectional trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene. The hydrogen bonded complexes built from the complementary molecular species show a significantly enhanced mesophase stability compared with the fluorinated acids in their pure states. The mesophase morphologies of the complexes are governed mainly by the number of the partially fluorinated chains grafted to the acid component. Mixed systems comprising the one-chain acids exhibit a smectic C phase followed by a smectic A phase at more elevated temperatures. Incorporation of a second semiperfluorinated chain into the acid leads to the formation of columnar mesophases. These columnar phases of the H-bonded complexes should represent ribbon phases resulting from the collapse of the smectic layers.  相似文献

Hydrogen-bonded liquid crystalline complexes have been obtained through 1:1 (molar ratio) complexation of 4- n -alkoxycinnamic acids ( n CNA: n = 4, 8, 10, 12, where n is the number of carbons in the alkyloxy chain) and trans -4-octyloxystilbazole (8Sz). These hydrogen-bonded complexes ( n CNA8Sz) form stable mesophases. The mesomorphic range was extended by the mixing of complexes. Hexatic modification of smectic B (SmB h ), smectic C (SmC), smectic A (SmA), and nematic mesophases of these complexes were determined by a combination of X-ray diffraction and polarizing optical microscopy. Transitions between the various smectic phases were deduced from the temperature-dependent layer spacing of n CNA8Sz. The layer spacing of these complexes in the SmB h and SmA phases gradually increased with increasing alkoxy chain length. The favouring of smectic phases in these complexes is believed to originate from the increment of polarity of the mesogen by intermolecular H-bonding.  相似文献

The synthesis, characterization and mesomorphic properties of a homologous series of 6-alkoxy naphth-2-yl 2-pyridylmethyl ketones and their copper(II) complexes are reported. All the ligands and their copper complexes, with exception of the lowest homologues, exhibit enantiotropic mesophases. According to textural observations, the ligands display nematic and smectic transitions depending on the length of the alkoxy chain on the pyridine moiety, while the mesogenic complexes show exclusively smectic transitions. In comparison with the phenyl analogues, stabilization of the mesophase and a greater tendency to smectic ordering through incorporation of the naphthyl group into the molecules is confirmed.  相似文献

Discotic mesogens featuring a pyridine ring were synthesized, and were found either to form ordered hexagonal columnar liquid crystalline phases or melt directly from a crystal to an isotropic liquid, depending on the position of the pyridyl nitrogen atom. Binary mixtures of the mesogenic pyridine derivatives with a similar discotic mesogen having a carboxylic acid group resulted in the formation of modular elliptical complexes through hydrogen bonding. The binary mixtures were found to exhibit ordered hexagonal columnar or ordered rectangular columnar and nematic mesophases, depending on the length of the alkyl chains, and displayed dramatically different properties from their constituent components. Binary mixtures of the non-mesogenic pyridine derivatives with carboxylic acid-functionalized discotic mesogens did not result in the formation of hydrogen-bonded complexes.  相似文献

The results of the study presented here show a new example of the use of liquid crystals and the interactions involved in the mesomorphic state to build up complex molecular organizations. We have pursued a design strategy in which hydrogen bonding allows the combination of the pi-stacking tendency of melamine and the lateral interaction capability of V-shaped molecules, which has been extensively demonstrated through nematic, smectic, or columnar mesophases. This combination addresses the formation of columnar arrangements with inherent helical organization. In this work, nonmesomorphic as well as mesomorphic V-shaped acids, with a structure similar to banana liquid crystals, have been complexed to a 2,4,6-triamino-1,3,5-triazine derivative in a proportion 3 to 1, respectively. Hydrogen-bonded supramolecules whose formation and stability in solution have been proven by infrared and NMR techniques have been thus obtained. DOSY experiments have allowed us to assess in solution the presence of the complexes and their tetrameric composition. All the complexes display mesogenic ability, and their mesomorphic organization has been studied by X-ray diffraction and CD spectroscopy. Results allow us to propose a helical columnar model for the mesophase originated from a propeller-like conformation of the supramolecular complexes.  相似文献

Novel azopyridine-containing supramolecular liquid crystalline (LC) materials built via 1 : 1-heterointermolecular hydrogen bonding between some 4-substituted phenyl-4'-azopyridines and 4- n -alkyloxybenzoic acids are reported. These hydrogen-bonded LC complexes exhibit well defined nematic, smectic A and smectic C phases over wide ranges of temperature depending upon the number of carbon atoms present in the alkyl chains. The formation of pure LC materials on 1 : 1-complexation could be confirmed from the phase diagrams of the binary mixtures, which clearly indicated a melting maximum for the 50 mol % mixture as well as the presence of two eutectic points on either side of this mixture.  相似文献

Several calamitic reactive mesogens containing only two benzene rings in the molecular core and with or without lateral substitution by the methyl/methoxy groups have been designed and their mesomorphic behaviour was characterised. Depending on the molecular structure, some of the materials exhibit the nematic and the orthogonal smectic mesophases. The reactive mesogens are aimed for further design of the macromolecular materials like polysiloxane-based polymers and elastomers. Beyond the mesomorphic and structural properties, the electrorheological properties within the temperature range of the nematic and smectic A mesophases were studied with and without applied electric field for the selected reactive mesogen. The increase of viscosity was found not to be higher than three times under applied electric field strength of 2 kV/mm. The mesomorphic, structural and rheological properties of the newly designed reactive mesogens are discussed in order to contribute to better understanding of the molecular architecture–nano-organisation properties relationship of such mesogenic materials.  相似文献

The synthesis and mesomorphic properties of a homologous series of N-(2-hydroxy-4-n-alkoxybenzylidene)-4'-n-decylphenylanilines and their platinum(II) and oxovanadium(IV) complexes are reported. All the ligands and their metal chelates exhibit enantiotropic mesophases, predominantly smectic A and smectic C phases. The transition temperatures and enthalpies have been determined for most of the compounds. The platinum(II) complexes have higher melting points and mesophase thermal stabilities. However, the oxovanadium(IV) complexes have a wider thermal range for the mesophase. Both platinum(II) and oxovanadium(IV) complexes containing only a chain on the biphenyl moiety exhibit a nematic phase.  相似文献

Two new mesogenic homologous series of liquid crystalline cinnamates with substituted ethyl tails, β-methoxyethyl [4-(4'-n-alkoxycinnamoyloxy)benzoates (I) and β-chloroethyl [4-(4'-n-alkoxycinnamoyloxy)benzoates (II), have been synthesized and characterized by a combination of elemental analysis and standard spectroscopic methods. In series I, lower-chain members exhibit nematic mesophase, middle members exhibit enantiotropic nematic as well as smectic A (SmA) mesophases, whereas higher members exhibit only an enantiotropic SmA mesophase. In series II, methoxy to n-butyloxy derivatives exhibit a monotropic nematic mesophase. The SmA mesophase commences from n-propyloxy derivative as monotropic and persists up to the last member synthesized. The mesomorphic properties of present series were compared with each other and with a structurally related mesogenic homologous series to evaluate the effects of substituted ethyl tail and cinnamoyloxy central linkage on mesomorphism.  相似文献

The mesomorphic properties of conventional rod-like liquid crystals (diphenyl1,3,4-thiadiazoles, diphenylpyrimidines, diphenyltriazines, diphenyltetrazines and p-terphenyl derivatives), of macrocyclic liquid crystals and of dimesogens can be influenced by addition of the electron acceptor 2,4,7-trinitrofluorenone (TNF). Thereby nematic and smectic C phases are suppressed and smectic A phases can be stabilized or induced. Long and branched terminal chains result in a strong stabilization of the SA phase, whereas no smectic phase is induced to accompany the nematic phases of mesogens with short terminal chains.  相似文献

Two new naphthyl-containing homologous series of mesogenic ligands, the 4-n-alkoxy-2-hydroxybenzylidene-2'-naphthylamines (series I) and 4(4'-n-alkoxybenzoyloxy)-2-hydroxybenzylidene-2'-naphthylamines (series II), as well as the related metallomesogens of higher homologues containing a Cu(II) atom, have been synthesized. All the ligands and complexes were characterized by a combination of elemental analysis and standard spectroscopic methods. In series I, n-heptyloxy and n-octyloxy derivatives are non-mesogenic whereas the remaining higher members synthesized exhibit a monotropic nematic mesophase. In series II, all the members synthesized exhibit an enantiotropic nematic mesophase. All the metallomesogens of series I synthesized exhibit a monotropic smectic A mesophase, except for the n-octyloxy derivative, which is non-mesogenic, whereas metallomesogens of series II exhibit enantiotropic nematic mesophases up to the n-tetradecyloxy derivatives; the n-tetradecyloxy and n-hexadecyloxy derivatives also exhibit smectic C mesophases. All the members of series II and their metallomesogens exhibit mesophases with wide temperature ranges and greater thermal stability as compared to series I and their metallomesogens, respectively. The mesomorphic properties of both the present series and their metallomesogens are compared with each other and with other structurally related series to evaluate the effect of the naphthalene moiety on mesomorphism.  相似文献

The mesomorphism of hydrogen bonded complexes formed between 4'-carboxybenzo-15-crown-5 stilbazolyl ester (CBCSE) as proton acceptor and carboxylic acids as proton donors is discussed. CBCSE is a monotropic mesogen, forming a nematic phase upon quench cooling. A total of 32 hydrogen bonded complexes has been studied. Hydrogen bonding with carboxylic acids stabilizes the nematic phase, and/or induces a smectic A (SmA) phase. CBCSE forms 1:1 complexes (molar ratio) with alkanoic acids (fatty acids) and 2:1 complexes with alkanedioic acids. None of these proton donors is a mesogen itself, but the hydrogen bonded complexes are. The influence of the chain or spacer length on the transition temperatures is discussed. Besides the homologous series of the alkanoic and alkanedioic acids, the following carboxylic acids were used in this study: diglycolic acid, pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid, 4-dodecyloxybenzoic acid, 3,4-bis(dodecyloxy)benzoic acid, 2,3,4-tris(dodecyloxy)benzoic acid and 3,4,5-tris(dodecyloxy)benzoic acid, phthalic acid, isophthalic acid and terephthalic acid.  相似文献

To elucidate induced smectic A and smectic B phases in binary nematic liquid crystal mixtures, a generalized thermodynamic model has been developed in the framework of a combined Flory-Huggins free energy for isotropic mixing, Maier-Saupe free energy for orientational ordering, McMillan free energy for smectic ordering, Chandrasekhar-Clark free energy for hexagonal ordering, and phase field free energy for crystal solidification. Although nematic constituents have no smectic phase, the complexation between these constituent liquid crystal molecules in their mixture resulted in a more stable ordered phase such as smectic A or B phases. Various phase transitions of crystal-smectic, smectic-nematic, and nematic-isotropic phases have been determined by minimizing the above combined free energies with respect to each order parameter of these mesophases. By changing the strengths of anisotropic interaction and hexagonal interaction parameters, the present model captures the induced smectic A or smectic B phases of the binary nematic mixtures. Of particular importance is the fact that the calculated phase diagrams show remarkable agreement with the experimental phase diagrams of binary nematic liquid crystal mixtures involving induced smectic A or induced smectic B phase.  相似文献

A novel supramolecular liquid crystal (LC) is synthesized from the binary complex of 4-decyloxy benzoic acid and cholesteryl acetate. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic study confirms the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bond between the mesogens. Various mesophases and corresponding textural changes in the complex are observed by comparing with its constituents through polarizing optical microscopic (POM) studies. The thermal stability factor of smectic phase for present complex is calculated. An interesting observation of present work is that investigation of extended thermal span of mesomorphic phases, decreased enthalpy, a nematic phase with a high clearing point and a low melting point. This is due to an arrangement of molecular reorientations and the development of new associations by hydrogen bonding. Optical tilt angle for smectic C phase is determined and the same is fitted to a power law.  相似文献

A series of linear oligo ( p -phenylene)s containing three, five and seven phenylene groups, modified with short lateral and long terminal alkoxy chains, were synthesized via Palladium complex-catalysed cross-coupling reactions. The thermotropic liquid crystalline and UV absorption/emission properties of these compounds were studied. It was observed that tri ( p -phenylene)s develop a rich mesomorphism including tilted smectic type mesophases (SmC and SmF/SmI) and the nematic phase, whereas penta- and hepta-( p -phenylene)s substituted with short lateral chains develop only the nematic phase. From these observations it is clear that the short lateral chains hinder the layered molecular packing typical of smectic phases and promote the formation of the less ordered liquid-like nematic phase. Mesophases appeared at lower temperatures when longer end chains were used. The optical properties studied by UV-Vis and emission spectroscopy indicate that these systems are promising candidates for blue-emitting layers in electroluminescent devices.  相似文献

A series of main‐chain, thermotropic, liquid‐crystalline (LC), hydrogen‐bonded polymers or self‐assembled structures based on 4,4′‐bipyridyl as a hydrogen‐bond acceptor and aliphatic dicarboxylic acids, such as adipic and sebacic acids, as hydrogen‐bond donors were prepared by a slow evaporation technique from a pyridine solution and were characterized for their thermotropic, LC properties with a number of experimental techniques. The homopolymer of 4,4′‐bipyridyl with adipic acid exhibited high‐order and low‐order smectic phases, and that with sebacic acid exhibited only a high‐order smectic phase. Like the homopolymer with adipic acid, the two copolymers of 4,4′‐bipyridyl with adipic and sebacic acids (75/25 and 25/75) also exhibited two types of smectic phases. In contrast, the copolymer of 4,4′‐bipyridyl with adipic and sebacic acids (50/50), like the homopolymer with sebacic acid, exhibited only one high‐order smectic phase. Each of them, including the copolymers, had a broad temperature range of LC phases (36–51 °C). The effect of copolymerization for these hydrogen‐bonded polymers on the thermotropic properties was examined. Generally, copolymerization increased the temperature range of LC phases for these polymers, as expected, with a larger decrease in the crystal‐to‐LC transition than in the LC‐to‐isotropic transition. Additionally, it neither suppressed the formation of smectic phases nor promoted the formation of a nematic phase in these hydrogen‐bonded polymers, as usually observed in many thermotropic LC polymers. The thermal transitions for all of them, measured by differential scanning calorimetry, were well below their decomposition temperatures, as measured by thermogravimetric analysis, which were in the temperature range of 193–210 °C. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel homologous series of supramolecular hydrogen bonded liquid crystals have been investigated. Hydrogen bonds are formed between p-n octyloxy benzoic acid and various p-n alkyloxy benzoic acids whose carbon chain length varied from pentyl to dodecyl. These complexes are characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, polarizing optical microscopy (POM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Phase diagram is constructed from POM and DSC data. The order of the phase transitions is determined by Navard and Cox ratio (N R). Characteristic phases like nematic, smectic C, and smectic F are identified. A new smectic ordering observed in this series is investigated by constructing phase diagram obtained from two binary mixtures of the present homologs. Inter-digitation of lamellar layers is observed to be one of the reasons for the occurrence of new smectic ordering. Optical tilt angle in smectic C phase is fitted to a power law. The magnitude of exponent of the power law is found to concur with the Mean Field theory predicted value.  相似文献
