Global bifurcation in generic systems of nonlinear Sturm-Liouville problems

We consider the system of coupled nonlinear Sturm-Liouville boundary value problems where , are real spectral parameters. It will be shown that if the functions and are `generic' then for all integers , there are smooth 2-dimensional manifolds , , of `semi-trivial' solutions of the system which bifurcate from the eigenvalues , , of , , respectively. Furthermore, there are smooth curves , , along which secondary bifurcations take place, giving rise to smooth, 2-dimensional manifolds of `non-trivial' solutions. It is shown that there is a single such manifold, , which `links' the curves , . Nodal properties of solutions on and global properties of are also discussed.

     

An uncertainty inequality involving norms

We derive a sharp uncertainty inequality of the form

with . As a consequence of this inequality we derive an upper bound for the so-called Laue constant, that is, the infimum of the functional , taken over all with (). Precisely, we obtain that which improves a previous bound of T. Gneiting.

The Wiener transform on the Besicovitch spaces

In his fundamental research on generalized harmonic analysis, Wiener proved that the integrated Fourier transform defined by is an isometry from a nonlinear space of functions of bounded average quadratic power into a nonlinear space of functions of bounded quadratic variation. We consider this Wiener transform on the larger, linear, Besicovitch spaces defined by the norm . We prove that maps continuously into the homogeneous Besov space for and , and is a topological isomorphism when .

     

A finiteness theorem for a class of exponential congruences

On the product of two generalized derivations

Two elements and in a ring determine a generalized derivation on by setting for any in . We characterize when the product is a generalized derivation in the cases when the ring is the algebra of all bounded operators on a Banach space , and when is a -algebra . We use these characterizations to compute the commutant of the range of .

     

Fixed point iteration for pseudocontractive maps

Let be a compact convex subset of a real Hilbert space, ; a continuous pseudocontractive map. Let and be real sequences in [0,1] satisfying appropriate conditions. For arbitrary define the sequence iteratively by where are arbitrary sequences in . Then, converges strongly to a fixed point of . A related result deals with the convergence of to a fixed point of when is Lipschitz and pseudocontractive. Our theorems also hold for the slightly more general class of continuous hemicontractive nonlinear maps.

A class of differentiable toral maps which are topologically mixing

We show that on the 2-torus there exists a open set of regular maps such that every map belonging to is topologically mixing but is not Anosov. It was shown by Mañé that this property fails for the class of toral diffeomorphisms, but that the property does hold for the class of diffeomorphisms on the 3-torus . Recently Bonatti and Diaz proved that the second result of Mañé is also true for the class of diffeomorphisms on the -torus ().

     

On a problem of Dynkin

Consider an -superdiffusion on , where is an uniformly elliptic differential operator in , and . The -polar sets for are subsets of which have no intersection with the graph of , and they are related to the removable singularities for a corresponding nonlinear parabolic partial differential equation. Dynkin characterized the -polarity of a general analytic set in term of the Bessel capacity of , and Sheu in term of the restricted Hausdorff dimension. In this paper we study in particular the -polarity of sets of the form , where and are two Borel subsets of and respectively. We establish a relationship between the restricted Hausdorff dimension of and the usual Hausdorff dimensions of and . As an application, we obtain a criterion for -polarity of in terms of the Hausdorff dimensions of and , which also gives an answer to a problem proposed by Dynkin in the 1991 Wald Memorial Lectures.

     

Gaussian estimates and regularized groups

We show that if a bounded analytic semigroup on satisfies a Gaussian estimate of order and is the generator of its consistent semigroup on , then generates a -regularized group on where . We obtain the estimate of () and the -independence of , and give applications to Schrödinger operators and elliptic operators of higher order.

     

Weighted inequalities for iterated convolutions

Given a fixed exponent , , and suitable nonnegative weight functions , , an optimal associated weight function is constructed for which the iterated convolution product satisfies

Fundamental theorem of geometry without the 1-to-1 assumption

It is proved that any mapping of an -dimensional affine space over a division ring onto itself which maps every line into a line is semi-affine, if and . This result seems to be new even for the real affine spaces. Some further generalizations are also given. The paper is self-contained, modulo some basic terms and elementary facts concerning linear spaces and also - if the reader is interested in other than , , or - division rings.
